Lincoln Times College and Cultural Night

Cultural Highlight:

The event started at 5:30pm with a feast of foods representing Somali, Oromo and Mexican cultures. No doubt everyone enjoyed the delicious food. After everyone had their fill, presenters from admissions staff from Minneapolis Community and Technical College and North Hennepin Community College gave important information on planning for postsecondary education. They talked about how to apply for college, the various programs of study offered, and the testing requirements/procedures. They also talked about the costs of attending college and applying for financial aid, which includes grants, scholarships and loans. In addition the computer lab was open to help parents of seniors do the online FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) application. The evening ended with cultural presentations from students representing Somali, Oromo, Mexican and Ecuadorian cultures, which included dances and slide shows. On the whole, the event was a success.

Oromia, Ethiopia

AR Quiz # 918

I’m Letifa Ahmed. I am Oromo. Oromo is an ethnic group in Ethiopia where there are many ethnic groups. Oromo people are the largest ethnic group. 34.5% are Oromo, 26.9% are Amaric, 6.2% are Somali, 6.1% are Tigraway, 4% are Sidama, and there are many other ethnic groups. In Ethiopia many people are able to speak several languages. In Minnesota we have four seasons whereas, Ethiopia is hot year round. There are a lot of differences between my country and the USA. In Ethiopia people use their hands to eat and sit in a circle on the floor and share food, but in the USA people usually use utensils and eat alone at a table. The cultural food in Ethiopia is called shoro (comes from maize). People add milk to it and eat it with injera bread, and soup. In Ethiopia people don’t use ice in beverages. They mostly drink hot beverages such as hot milk, tea, and coffee.

People in Oromia share with, and take care of each other more than the people who live in the USA. For instance, extended families live together and share meals together. People also show more respect to each other in Ethiopia. For example, the children look up to and respect Juan Sanchez & Carlos Chogllo their elders. at the Peace Festival

The talent show was an incredible experience. Unlike last year this time was only during school. For some students this was hard, but at the end we made it work and every culture showed a little music or dance about them.

Sartu Ahmed Students need an after school program until the end of year. Students needs help with homework. Students need after school activities. Like if you want to see the MCA scores go up then you need after school classes. Students have a lot of home work, but without after school, they don’t get any help. They have to change the program. We can’t live without help on our home work. If there is no after school, how can we know what we missed? That is not making sense. We have a lot of homework every single day. A lot of students don’t do the home work because they didn’t get much help. So we absolutely need after school!

Yusuf Osman The school lunch is great, and students should organize to give the leftover food to those who need it. All students who you are here should want to eat for free. It has different kinds of food for lunch every day. But some students don’t want some of this food. They have a problem with the lunch. They don’t finish the food, and throw it in the garbage. They come from countries where people didn’t always have enough food. We saw people starving. Those students should remember that clearly. We should have to save the food and not throw it in the garbage.

Opinions: How do you feel about our school not having after school? Carlos Chogllo: Bad idea, because there are teens that need extra help or they want to stay here. Hassan: “Very bad, because we are trying to study for the MCA test and we don't have it. We need it immediately.” Jonathan: “Is not good because we need it.” Cesar: “I think it is not a good idea because students don’t understand some classes, and they need to stay after school for extra help.”

Opinions: Do you think students should waste their lunch? Saadiyo: Yes, because we don't have good lunch. Franklyn: No, because there are others who are in need of it. Feysel: I think the students should not waste school lunch because the government is paying for it with tax payer’s money.

My experience with the peace festival has been great! I worked with great partners and had to do a lot of extended research. When I went to the peace festival and saw all different works of art, I was amazed by all the different efforts people put into this project. I really liked this opportunity to be part of this awesome tradition. I enjoyed the people that came from different places to give a speech, and I am definitely looking forward to the peace festival next year.

Even though the weather was chilly that day, the atmosphere of the Noble Peace Price festival warmed everybody. This year’s honor belonged to president Barack Obama since he won the Noble Peace Prize in 2009. The purpose of the festival is to teach young people like us about the Noble Peace Prize and its influence on world peace. We were in two groups with different projects. There was a table reserved for our project that had a gold star balloon with our name written on it. By: Fadumo Abshir

We learned a lot from this project while we were doing it. For instance, how to do research using different types of sources that is essential for our project like books, internet, newspapers and magazines. We learned how to organize our bibliography by differentiating our sources in to primary and secondary sources and to write citations for each source we used for the project. The project was an exhibit of the Lincoln-Douglas debates and we competed with others schools. We learned about other important historical events by reading and looking at other groups’ exhibits. By: Brook Belachew The National History Day project was a good experience for me. It was also fun for some reasons. The project was doing a research about one important event in history. I found it a little challenging when I started the project because it was my first time doing research. One thing I liked most about the project was reading. The project required a lot of reading from different reliable sources like newspapers, books and websites. Every moment I was reading was finding something interesting that is helpful for the project. There were also many rules a participant had to follow to earn good credit. It was important and also frustrating to go back and check if an error had been made. As I mentioned above, the challenging part was writing a summary of what I had read. It was hard to summarize what I read in a few paragraphs. It was also fun learning about something I had no idea about and to all of a sudden become interested in it. By: Kufa Dube
