Lincoln Times College and Cultural Night

Cultural Highlight:

The event started at 5:30pm with a feast of foods representing Somali, Oromo and Mexican cultures. No doubt everyone enjoyed the delicious food. After everyone had their fill, presenters from admissions staff from Minneapolis Community and Technical College and North Hennepin Community College gave important information on planning for postsecondary education. They talked about how to apply for college, the various programs of study offered, and the testing requirements/procedures. They also talked about the costs of attending college and applying for financial aid, which includes grants, scholarships and loans. In addition the computer lab was open to help parents of seniors do the online FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) application. The evening ended with cultural presentations from students representing Somali, Oromo, Mexican and Ecuadorian cultures, which included dances and slide shows. On the whole, the event was a success.

Oromia, Ethiopia

AR Quiz # 918

I’m Letifa Ahmed. I am Oromo. Oromo is an ethnic group in Ethiopia where there are many ethnic groups. Oromo people are the largest ethnic group. 34.5% are Oromo, 26.9% are Amaric, 6.2% are Somali, 6.1% are Tigraway, 4% are Sidama, and there are many other ethnic groups. In Ethiopia many people are able to speak several languages. In Minnesota we have four seasons whereas, Ethiopia is hot year round. There are a lot of differences between my country and the USA. In Ethiopia people use their hands to eat and sit in a circle on the floor and share food, but in the USA people usually use utensils and eat alone at a table. The cultural food in Ethiopia is called shoro (comes from maize). People add milk to it and eat it with injera bread, and soup. In Ethiopia people don’t use ice in beverages. They mostly drink hot beverages such as hot milk, tea, and coffee.

People in Oromia share with, and take care of each other more than the people who live in the USA. For instance, extended families live together and share meals together. People also show more respect to each other in Ethiopia. For example, the children look up to and respect Juan Sanchez & Carlos Chogllo their elders. at the Peace Festival
