LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Some years, the arrival of spring is more of a joy than others. And this is one of those years, when the past few months have been difficult in one way or another for just about everyone. So that’s why it’s been especially wonderful to see the new Seed Library here at the Library. Apparently many of you agree with me, because the seeds have been quickly taken and we’ve had to order more. Except for (blech) lima beans.

It makes me happy to think that our Lincolnwood residents are potting up those seeds and getting them ready to plant. I will enjoy them in gardens on my lunchtime walks around the neighborhood, and in the fall when plants go to seed, perhaps we will see some of those seeds returned to the Seed Library for next year’s planting.

In the meantime, you can use the library to learn more about how to garden, to take the fresh herbs and vegetables and turn them into delicious food, to paint flowers, and to take care of your lawn.

Another thing that brings me so much joy is the constant stream of new life in the form of our littlest library users. Even throughout the winter, with its rain, snow, sleet, and bitter cold, parents and caregivers bring little folks to the library to story programs with our great youth librarians like Dylan, Sarah, and Elizabeth. They bundle them up to come hear stories, sing songs, and play afterwards in a safe and welcoming environment.

And then the kids get older. . . and they come on their own to the library after school. My office shares a wall with their gathering space, and I hear every day how much fun they are having, also in a safe and welcoming environment.

The Library is a very special place for growth and learning and fun for people of all ages, and this is such a great time of year to remember that. Happy spring!
