LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
It’s hard to pick one favorite program from all of the amazing programs the Lincolnwood Library has coming up in September and October. I mean, Jason Reynolds! He’s one of my all-time favorite authors, and his speeches are always funny, touching and eye-opening and poetic (much like his books). And there are all of the hands-on learning opportunities for adults and for kids, like making challah, or improving your smartphone photography skills. The Hispanic Heritage Month programs all look wonderful.
But the program I find most intriguing is the special presentation of the Violins of Hope. Attendees will get to hear the stories that go with these historic instruments, once used in the concentration camps, and see the violins in person. To make the evening an even more memorable one, the Lincolnwood Chamber Orchestra has planned a lovely concert to follow, and will include at least one piece using one of the instruments. It feels very fitting that it will take place on September 11th, a day of remembrance. We want to thank the JCC, the Friends of the Lincolnwood Library, and Loeber Motors for working together to make this evening possible.
To me, it symbolizes everything a public library should be. It combines history, arts, philosophy, and speaks to the resilience of humans, who pass their stories along to new generations so they can be remembered. It reflects sorrow, but also hope. As fun as the library can be, it is also a place of learning. And it brings the community together, disparate people from different backgrounds, each with their own history, culture, and experience.
Everyone can use the library–it is a public space, and like our surrounding libraries, we all share with each other. But there are some things that are reserved just for our residents, and we like to highlight those in September, otherwise known as Library Card Sign-Up Month. We’ll be rolling out the red carpet and making sure you know all of the benefits your library card gives you.
