LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
One thing that continues to amaze me as the years roll by is how many excellent books are published each year. I have been lucky enough to be on several book award committees, where you get to look closely at a subgroup of the year’s books, and the decisions are always difficult because there are always really compelling books.
This year, I am chairing the 2025 Sibert Award for Informational Books for Children, so I have read a lot of books about a lot of subjects, all aimed at children ages 0-14. Science, biography, arts--you name it, and there has been a book written about it in 2024. Is every book excellent? No. But so many books are well-written and thoroughly researched, with charts, diagrams, photographs, paintings and so on to bring the information to life. It will be true of next year’s books, too.
And that’s why, even though there are a lot of facts available online (as well as a lot of incorrect information), it is still worth taking the time to read a whole book on a subject. Authors of informational books for adults and kids give the reader context—why the subject is important, and what the world was like when that information was discovered or the person was born. They manage the pace to keep it exciting, uncover fascinating facts in doing their research, and tell you where they got their information, so you can check it for yourself.
That is just one section of the library. Year after year, excellent fiction, movies, picture books, and video games (just to name a few) are published. That is one reason why each year the Lincolnwood Library staff selects a book for the whole community to read together for Lincolnwood Reads. Each of us has our own taste, but reading something that you didn’t exactly choose for yourself can be exciting—that’s where you get the unexpected rewards of a book that isn’t what you normally read turning out to be a favorite. And talking with your friends, family, and neighbors about the book can help you get to know them better and learn from their perspectives.
This year’s Lincolnwood Reads offers a fun, very engaging mystery story, and the library staff have come up with fun, engaging programs to go with it. I encourage you to participate this year as we all read The Thursday Murder Club together. It has multiple mysteries, interesting personalities, and if you’re anything like me, it will make you very hungry for Joyce’s Lemon Drizzle Cake.
