We talked through some designs, discussed materials and instead of going for the widely used cedar, we settled on a more unusual finish with a beautiful grain. The Garden Room is fully insulated with rigid foil backed insulation and built to a very high standard with electricity installed. It’s worth noting too, that if the building is under 2.5 metres high, it’s likely you won’t need planning permission.

Quality design adds value to your home and can provide a place to work, be creative or just escape. My latest garden room (pictured) was in response to a brief from a lovely couple in Kingswinford, who wanted extra space to entertain.

Aside from helping clients to transform their lives with a fantastic night’s sleep we’re really proud to have been awarded the title of ‘Retail Champion’ by the National Bed Federation. We’re also delighted with how the business has grown over the years. We started off with a small ground floor showroom and now we’ve expanded over three floors. Our customer base spans beyond the immediate area and we have many clients who travel long distances to seek out our help, advice and products. We also serve generations of the same family which is really nice. Manufacturers often call on us to help them to develop their ranges, which is a real accolade for us.

We’ve heard that you’ve raised a fantastic amount of money over the years for a very worthy cause? Yes, we’ve raised more than £180,000 over the last decade for the Mary Stevens Hospice. We don’t charge for delivery, so instead the money raised goes direct to them. We’ve also donated furniture for their family room to help loved ones stay close at very difficult times.

BRITISH FURNITURE INDUSTRY LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN TO SAVE JOBS An unprecedented campaign to support jobs in the British furniture industry has been launched, in a bid by the industry to stave off up to 10,000 jobs at risk due to COVID 19. A survey of National Bed Federation (NBF) and British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM) members in July 2020 1 revealed the devastating impact of COVID 19 on the sector. Around believe they may be forced to make redundancies of between 10 and 50% of their workforce or go on to short time working in the autumn. According to the BFC, 50% of furniture bought in the UK is imported.

And every extra £1m spent on British furniture could support up to 50 manufacturing jobs in the sector.”

Is anxiety holding you back? Hilary Sims - Life Balance

The chances are that while reading this, you are grabbing a few minutes to sit down and take a short break. The pace at which we live our lives is demanding: juggling work, family commitments and a busy diary of events can sometimes feel overwhelming. While we all feel anxious from time to time, anxiety can become excessive and persistent, with its psychological, emotional and physiological symptoms, such as ‘panic attacks’, impacting on our daily lives and those around us.

Hilary also helps people dealing with anger, depression, bullying, family breakdown, stress, low self-esteem, bereavement and trauma, listening, offering non-judgmental support and helping clients identify ways of dealing with situations. Therapy sessions take place at her practice or in the home or workplace. “A problem shared is indeed a problem halved. I believe we should all take time to focus on ourselves and affirm that we are living our lives in a balanced way. Being self-aware gives us the opportunity to address issues before they manifest into something bigger,” she adds.

Hilary Sims, a Registered Member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and an Accredited Member of the National Counselling Society, is helping individuals of all ages, couples, families and employees of local businesses talk about anxiety and take positive action through her private practice, ‘Life Balance - Counselling Just For You’, based in Stourbridge.

“I give people a safe, confidential space to focus on themselves, explore the issues causing their anxiety, and regain control of their thoughts and behaviours through cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), a collaborative intervention which involves talking and doing,” she explains. “We talk about things in the therapy room which are then practised between sessions.”

Five years ago I turned up for my own colour analysis session dressed head to toe in black. I’d been in a uniform of black and grey for years – it was where I felt comfortable. I tried to copy what looked good on other people – but it didn’t feel like me. I would panic buy for a night out and come home with yet another black top. Sound familiar?

STUFFED TURKEY LEG WITH BRAISED RED CABBAGE AND BLUE CHESSE AND FIG SAUSAGE LOAF I do love it when it drops cold and dark in the run up towards Christmas, the winter warming aromas in the kitchen are very comforting. For those who like the dark meat from a turkey try this stuffed turkey thigh ballotine. Ask your butcher to prep your turkey into a crown and de-bone the thighs. You can roast the drumsticks in the tray with the crown to use to make the Boxing day pie.

USEFUL INFO

Lay the thigh on top of the bacon then spread the puree over the meat.

Preparation: Start the day before. Varying cooking times.

Effort: well worth it.

Pick the parch and foil up and push forward to start rolling the meat up. Once you have a large sausage shape twist the ends to make a Christmas cracker shape.

Pre heat oven to 180oC and cook for 1 hour.

Once cooked allow to cool enough so you can handle it and remove the foil and parchment paper then place in a large pan with 2 litres of chicken stock. Push the paper and foil down in to the stock and put a lid on. Allow to simmer for 20 minutes and then remove paper and foil from the stock. It should be clean and so all of the caramelisation going on during roasting ends up in your gravy. Whisk in gravy granules to the stock to make a quick gravy or you can reduce madeira in a separate pan and then add to the stock and allow to simmer down for an hour whisking in a few nobs of cold butter at the end to emulsify. If you like a thicker gravy you can add an equal amount of butter and flour rubbed together similar to making a roux.

STUFFED TURKEY LEG 2 kilo of turkey thigh (2 thighs) 16 thinly sliced rashers of smoked streaky bacon (rind removed) 2 large leeks trimmed and washed then sliced 1 sprig of - rosemary, thyme, sage, parsley (leaves picked) 1 pinch of maldon sea salt 2 eggs 100g of butter Maldon sea salt

Put the ballotine back in the oven to brown the bacon. Allow to rest for 1 hour with a tin foil hat on and then carve.

BRAISED RED CABBAGE

Prepare the 2 thighs separately. Lay the thigh on a chopping board skin side down. Where the meat is thick, trim it off the top and from the sides with a sharp knife to get an even height and straight sides.

Fry off leeks in butter or rapeseed oil with fresh herbs. In the food processor pulse the cooked leek, herbs and raw turkey trimmings with a pinch of sea salt and 2 egg yolks to get a rough puree.

METHOD: Thinly slice the red cabbage and onions and rinse well. Add all the ingredients to a large pan and simmer for about 3 hours or until the liquid has reduced and you are left with soft cabbage with a slight glaze to it. If there

CYCLE RIDE TO COMMEMORATE SCHOOL OPENING Group at the start of the ride (Gareth Jones is centre holding the Welsh Flag) first thought about the idea during lockdown as it was reported that 1.3 million people bought bikes and it also coincided with the founding of the Prep School in Wales, my home country. The team of riders set out a glorious sunny day from Llanwrtyd to Bromsgrove. Cycling through the countryside either side of the border was beautiful and this certainly helped to ensure that the day ran smoothly.”

In this year when nothing has been able to be celebrated as might have been planned, Bromsgrove School had hoped to come together with the town of Llanwrtyd Wells to celebrate their combined history, 80 years on. At the start of the Second World War the Senior School was evacuated to this small welsh town and on September 20th 1940, Bromsgrove Junior School opened its doors with just 16 pupils. From these small foundations the Junior School flourished and it now has over 500 pupils. Sadly the celebrations that were planned have had to be postponed, but some of the School’s intrepid staff decided to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the founding of Bromsgrove Prep School in their own way.

More detail of the School’s evacuation to Wales follows: 81 years ago Bromsgrove School moved to Llanwrtyd Wells after the School buildings were requisitioned by the Ministry of War on 7th September 1939. By 30th September, 240 boys were in their temporary home and Llanwrtyd Wells became Bromsgrove School’s main home for four years during World War Two. As the War intensified and the threat of invasion grew, parents of younger boys asked for their sons to be taken under Bromsgrove School care. Bombing raids on major towns and cities across the country led Headmaster Walters to believe that a Prep School was needed to accommodate the growing need. On September 20th 1940, Bromsgrove Junior School opened its doors with just 16 pupils.

Organised by Gareth Jones, the Prep School’s Head of Boys PE, 14 cyclists, all members of school staff, took on the challenge of riding from Llanwrtyd Wells to Bromsgrove, with four riders even completing a round trip of 180 miles. Gareth commented, “This is a day that will stay long in the memory. To cycle from where we were based in Llanwrtyd Wells back to Bromsgrove was a symbolic thing to do and I 56

Walking Rugby is a slower, non-contact version of the game, and is particularly suited to retired players, those recovering from injury and illness, and over-50s wishing to stay fit and active. It can be played by all ages and sexes together on the same pitch. The new format is competitive and good fun, but no previous rugby experience is required, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s open to all levels of fitness and skill. ALL ABOARD FOR A CITYBREAK IN BRUNEL’S BRISTOL. by Rebecca Underwood, Travel Journalist featured two bedrooms and two bathrooms (one en-suite) and the ultra-comfortable double bed, resulted in a long leisurely lie-in.

Bristol, one of the UK’s most popular destinations, offers a glimpse into its intriguing heritage and rich maritime history, and the opportunity to view the engineering masterpieces of Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

After breakfast, I hopped on a bus headed for the Clifton Suspension Bridge, Brunel’s first project at the age of only 23. Construction lasted for 33 years and the bridge opened in 1864. Traversing the Avon Gorge and the River Avon with a length of 412 metres and a width of 9.45 metres it is magnificent.

Born in Portsmouth in 1806, Brunel is revered as one of Britain’s greatest civil, structural and marine engineers. As chief engineer of the Great Western Railway he surveyed the entire route from London to Bristol on horseback, and developed the Great Western Steam Ship Company's first propeller-driven iron-hulled ship carrying passengers from Bristol to North America.

After admiring the splendid views I took another local bus and made my way to the Great Western Dockyard to explore yet another of Brunel’s masterpieces.

London Paddington station, designed by Brunel, opened in 1854, and I decided to hop on the Great Western Railway train, direct to Bristol, to find out more. Bristol Temple Meads station, which opened in 1878, was also designed by Brunel. Outside, I boarded a local bus, bound for the Premier Suites Bristol Cabot Circus, located on Quarker’s Friars, in the centre of the city. The SS Great Britain, launched in 1843, was the longest purpose-built passenger ship in the world combining an iron hull with screw propulsion. The three decks provided accommodation for 360 passengers and 120 crew and the vessel’s maiden voyage from Liverpool to New York in 1845 took only 14 days. In 1852 the ship was sold and adapted and set sail for Australia carrying emigrants. Later, the vessel carried cargo from England to the west coast of America and in 1886 she suffered damage whilst sailing off Cape Horn and her captain steered her to the Falkland Islands where she was sold. Abandoned until she was rescued in 1970, she returned to Bristol on a huge floating pontoon, pulled by tugs, and having sailed around the world 32 times her arduous restoration began.

to get out for some fresh air. If you have a cat you may like to pop a litter tray down for them, they may prefer to stay indoors on particularly cold days. If you have more than one cat, put more than one litter tray down. When out and about, check cars before you start them as cats like to climb inside a car engine to keep warm. Be aware that antifreeze is poisonous to dogs and cats, they will be tempted to lick it as it’s so sweet, just a tiny bit can kill so it needs to be kept well out of reach and take care not to spill any.

It’s not just us who feel the cold, our pets do too, rabbits will need plenty of extra warm bedding such as hay and straw, hutches should be cleaned out regularly and checked daily to ensure that they are not damp. Rabbits will still need their exercise in warm dry areas and also lots of company, if they don’t have another rabbit for company then ensure that you spend lots of good quality time with them. Whilst we might feel like hibernating, it’s important to remember that rabbits actually don’t hibernate, if your little one is losing weight, lethargic and not eating then these are signs that need to be taken seriously, get them to a Vet.

It’s great to share the tasty treats with our furry friends, especially at this time of year but take care that you know what’s in those treats. Chocolate is toxic for dogs and many cakes contain sultanas, raisins and currants which are toxic too. You could always try making a dog friendly mince pie with real meat and carrots, why not add some sweet potato too and come up with a fun festive name for them. There are loads of home-made treat ideas online for cats, dogs, rabbits, budgies, parrots and other species of pets too, why not take a look and make them a tasty treat of their own.

Dogs feel the cold too, just like us humans not all dogs are the same. Some dog breeds will be able to handle the cold much better than others, such as those with thick double coats like Siberian Huskies. Dogs with thin coats can be very vulnerable in cold weather as can small dogs, thinner dogs, puppies and older dogs, who will all get cold quicker. Pop a little coat on them if you feel they need it and watch out for signs of them being cold when you’re out, they may whine, seem anxious, shiver, lift their paws up or seem generally uncomfortable, get them home and warm them up.

Don’t forget the Wildlife as the winter months approach they will need some help, why not put some food out for them if you can spare it. Birds puff out their feathers to stay warm so please don’t mistake this for a fat bird, it could well be the complete opposite and they may really need some yummy scraps. Enjoy the seasonal period and get ready to snuggle in for winter to begin, I know I will be!!!

FIAT PANDA CITY CROSS The ubiquitous Fiat Panda celebrated its 40th birthday and still this little diminutive car looks superb, it is one of those cars there is no mistaking just what it is, such is the design, it is not a clone of others, you look at it and you know it is a Fiat Panda, writes Bob Hickman.

The CGT conundrum The coronavirus pandemic is now wreaking havoc with public finances and there are huge gaps that will at least partly need to be plugged by tax rises. With Rishi Sunak calling for a review of Capital Gains Tax, could a long suspected increase to this tax be on the cards for the next budget?

• Principle Private Residence relief – currently all gains made on a main residence are CGT exempt. There have been some suggestions that this relief should be limited, to perhaps gains of £200,000 per transaction. • The previous review of Inheritance Tax recommended changing CGT treatment on death. Currently the purchase cost of assets is uplifted to the value at death, wiping out taxable gains accrued in lifetime.

There are multiple ways in which CGT could be amended to raise revenue from investors:

This leaves investors with some potentially difficult decisions to make where they hold large unrealised gains. The question is whether or not to realise gains now, paying tax at a known (possibly lower) rate to avoid a potential tax increase that we don’t know will actually happen.

• The headline rate - CGT is currently charged at 10% for basic rate payers and 20% for higher* whilst the main rates of income tax are double that at 20% and 40% respectively. • The annual exemption to CGT (currently £12,300) could be scrapped – potentially with the personal allowance being amended to cover capital gains too – or reduced to a de minimis level, similar to the £2,000 dividend allowance.

It’s a complex conundrum particularly for those planning to hold assets through to death. Advance warning helps but unfortunately that luxury is not always a given.

• Entrepreneurs’ Relief - reduces CGT to 10% on the disposal of qualifying business assets - this has already been limited to £1m of lifetime gains (from £10m) and there have been many calls for it to be scrapped all together.
