Wake up on the right side, with the right bed ’s Top tips before buying your new bed TIP 1

TIP 2

TIP 3

Research beds before visiting the store

Trying your new mattress

Spend as much as you can afford

Look at reviews, ask family and friends for recommendations. Find out what mattress your currently on this will help our bed specialists in advising on your new bed

TIP 4

Bigger is better More space = less disturbance = better sleep Also go for the biggest bed that you can fit in space. But make sure you check access to the room. Many homes won’t take a super king up the stairs

Make sure you try mattresses before you purchase one – one type will certain not suit all. Wear something comfortable when trying mattress and spend as long as possible can, especially in your sleeping position

TIP 5

Perfect partners You must make ensure if you’re purchasing a mattress only that the base/Frame of your current bed is not only in good condition but is also the same size and compatible with the mattress you are looking at, our advisors can help with this

COMFORT SUPPLIERS SINCE 1976 Mill St, Brierley Hill, DY5 2RG 01384 74166 Dreamlandbedding.co.uk 4

A bed in a large investment, you have them for a length and they affect you a great deal. A £1000 bed costs less than 40p a night over seven years

TIP 6

Safe, clean, honest Every mattress and divan bed is made by a NBF approved member so when you buy from you have peace of mind of what is in the mattress

We have mattresses which compensate for vastly different weights in a couple, to mattresses with reinforced edge which can be beneficial to those less mobile. No matter what your requirements come into store where one of our advisors will run though what in mattress may work best for your needs. Throughout this month there are offers on a large selection of products, most in stock as well. If you have any questions about beds and mattresses at all feel free to speak to our bed specialist purveyor of the finest beds

“National bed month aims to raise awareness of the importance of sleep and, more specifically, how significant a good, comfortable bed is in helping to achieve a good night's sleep, we are constantly training our staff to make sure they have the knowledge to be able to offer the best advice possible. I don’t target our staff instead I believe its best for them to get honest impartial advice, not only promoting a relaxed atmosphere but making sure that the customers get the right products for their needs”

Make your neighbours green with envy As homeowners we don’t like to admit it but keeping up with the neighbours is something many of us are guilty of. We see how a new front door has transformed next door and think what something similar will do for ours.

Such was the quality of the installation that their neighbour wanted his own to replace his original conservatory, which was beginning to underperform. “We were really pleased with the original installation and so was the client, so we weren’t surprised that the neighbour wanted one too,” added Neal.

Instead of following the crowd, however, why not be a trend setter instead and make your home the envy of the street. Neal Harper, Managing Director of Wolverhampton Glass, explained: “Thanks to improved technology and design, homeowners can really add a personal touch of luxury to their home, whatever the product, and really make the neighbours sit up and take notice.

“The original conservatory was styled with traditional white uPVC windows and its polycarbonate roof meant the space was becoming less thermally efficient. Thankfully we were able to strip out the whole thing and start again. “The finished conservatories were identical, with the only difference being that one chose Tapco tiles and the other chose MetroTiles.”

“From elegant flush sash windows suitable for both modern and traditional properties, to slimline aluminium bi-fold doors and stunning conservatories, you can make your home stand out from the crowd.

Why not make a statement and give your home the facelift it deserves, and soon your neighbours will be trying to keep up with you?

“While a plethora of colour options and heritage wood effects to choose from will see any replacement front door provide real eyecatching kerb appeal.”

To help, Wolverhampton Glass is offering up to 35% off new windows, doors, or conservatories.

One recent project Wolverhampton Glass saw a local homeowner make a statement with a brand-new conservatory – and his next-door neighbour was so impressed that he ordered a matching conservatory for his house from the company.

Wolverhampton Glass, which has over 45 years of industry experience and more than 25,000 completed projects across the Midlands to its name, is offering up to 35% off windows, doors and conservatories. For more information call 01902 773831 or email sales@wolverhamptonglass.co.uk.

Wolverhampton Glass installed a stunning and stylish anthracite grey uPVC conservatory featuring sleek tilt and turn windows, a beautiful set of French doors, and brand-new tiled conservatory roof. 6

Interior design for Period homes www.jennifersuzanne.co.uk 07977330011

jennifer@jennifersuzanne.co.uk @jennifersuzanneinteriors

I have recently been designing for period properties from Arts and Crafts to Edwardian and Victorian homes and thought this was a great opportunity to talk about the characteristics of those periods features. Lots of question's arise with a period property, is it listed, unlisted, the charming quirks that make the properties unique from high ceilings to architectural details. Ultimately for the home owner it can become quite overwhelming when it comes to making interior decisions so I love to get involved in helping and creating a look and style that is unique to the home and the owner.

Victorian property

To help it’s always good to have a bit of knowledge on the history and what are the main characteristics?

Edwardian property

• • • • • • • • • •

• 8

High ceilings Large bay windows Stained glass windows Brickwork porches Brickwork in contrasting colours Geometric tiles in hallways Patterned wallpaper; usually floral Wood floors A fireplace in each room Elaborate, detailed features that reflect the personalities and wealth of the homes’ owners

Neighborhoods feature houses built in straight lines

Our Home • • • • • • •

first question I always ask how long you have lived in your property and especially a period property as it takes a while and take your time to find as much about your period home, ask neighbours, local shops and pubs nearby, library, online records you may have interesting stories that are part of the history. Look closely at details and feature the bare bones of the house. Always check that you know exactly what is listed and what you can and can’t touch.

Mock-Tudor cladding and timbers, typically toward the top of the house Red brickwork Parquet wood floors Ornate tilework Wide hallways Brighter interiors Large windows

Georgian property •

• • • •

Sash windows with small panes. It’s common to see one or more bricked up windows on Georgian house; these are the result of the window tax levied between 1696 and 1851. Taller windows on the first two floors; smaller windows on upper storeys. Large kitchen located on the lower ground level well away from the main living area. No private garden; instead, many Georgian homes were erected around garden squares or built within a terrace. Stucco fronted exterior with a flat, symmetrical appearance. Balanced, roomy interior layout.

2.

You’ll notice that Georgian architecture embraces a variety of styles, but all are elegant and symmetrical, often with flamboyant neoclassic touches.

Arts and Crafts property? • • • • •

Exterior asymmetrical roofs, often gables, and a distinctive form and structure. The emphasis is on using traditional methods of construction and craftsmanship. An open floor plan. natural materials such as stone, brick, and wood. Airy, light-filled rooms that encourage interaction with the outdoors.

MY TOP 5 TIPS For Period Homes 1.

Don’t Rush into Anything… One of the 9

Plan the rooms… Planning the room function and the way the space will be used to suit you and your lifestyle. Modern homes are already built and planned with specific space and uses but with older properties you may want to reconfigure the layout and what rooms are used for that purpose. Look at alcoves and interesting spaces that can be designed to be use for storage, bookcase, home bars, tv units, anything bespoke that is using the best of that space.

Our Home 3.

Mixing old and New.. Mean you can do a mix of old and new, perhaps you’ve inherited furniture or you want to reuse from previous home just be playful mix and match eclectic design at it best, up cycle modern piece to fit in the scheme, you can reupholster furniture, repaint new colours, update the lighting, add in soft furnishing, mirrors and artwork that reflects your current style.

4.

Be careful not to automatically pick out picture rails, dado rails, cornices and skirting boards in white. By matching the skirtings to the wall colour, you can create a much softer effect without contrasting lines breaking up the wall.

5.

Restore original features… If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! These period feature are what your makes your house unique so often I see layers of paint over beautiful wooden door frames or boxed in fireplaces, and carpets over beautiful originally flooring. Its always worth restoring and statements such as a marble or stone fireplace, original plasterwork that are worth investing in.

Period Home a Modern Update 6. 7.

Consider your colour palette choices. But don't be afraid to create a statement feature wall. ... 8. Dress your windows. ... 9. Make cornicing a feature. ... 10. Add statement rugs to accentuate flooring. ... 11. Add mirrors to accentuate light. ... 12. Mix in Modern Furniture. A carpenter for 30 years, I’ve been designing and creating bespoke garden rooms since 2001 for customers looking to create home offices, places to entertain or additional space for the family. I’m not a salesman, so there’s never any hard sell, I’m a craftsman with a love of great design, creating the highest quality Garden Rooms with a real attention to detail. This means from start to finish I’m with you every step of the way, coming up with ideas and looking at ways of doing things differently to make the most of your space. I’ve met some lovely people along the way and as Mez Design is my business, it’s important that customers, who often become friends, are always 100 per cent happy.

But don’t just take my word for it… “Paul and the team did a great job and their craftsmanship and expertise were clear to see all the way through. It was so good to see people who care so much in what they do and for the customer. We are over the moon with our garden room and if you are considering one please speak to Paul before you decide. We made a great choice.” Brian & Liz Morgan, Stourton 4m x 4m Garden Room

As an avid watcher of Sex and the City, I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing Carrie & the cast back on our screens, so I have chosen shades from River Island she would wear, a frothy clutch & crystal earrings from Mango, her heels are still sky scrapers, so these platform mules from Zara seemed quite apt. Mango have a fabulous collection of zesty separates including lots of retro prints which I love! 24

Ice Cream Sundae Hot pink is the fashion colour forecast for the Spring, I have kept it a bit more subtle, I love the soft twill coat from M&S, this is a fabulous wardrobe staple, the granddad cardigan is still around from meandem.com, you will hopefully see more combat styles as the season moves on plus retro trainers, chains on bags are key, you can still find quilted bags & we will be seeing more scarves as accessories on your head & round your neck. 25

Bags & Shoes, so much to chose from, fabulous colour & style from all over the High St, this season’s trend is to have a matching midi & mini bag, the JW Anderson twister bag comes in 2 sizes & lots of shades, lets hope we have plenty of places to go with our new bags! Boots are chunky or sassy as these zebra print ankle boots from Zara, I love the slip on Carvela bling trainers, which come in 2 other colours, chic & comfortable.

How Hypnotherapy Could Help You

Louise Squires

HPD, DSFH, MNCH (Reg.) AfSFH (Reg.), MHS (Reg.)

Having suffered with anxiety in the past, working in high pressure sales roles, whilst managing the demands of two young children. I understand how stress can impact every aspect of our lives, leading to weight gain, panic attacks, insomnia and negative self-talk.

I work with clients with anxiety, depression, weight management, phobias, sleep problems, confidence issues, imposter syndrome and many other areas. I help my clients to identify and work with their inner skills and resources, to help them to realise their potential and ability to make positive changes.

As a solution focused hypnotherapist, I help people to make significant, positive changes in their lives in a short period of time. I help my clients focus on what they want to achieve rather than on their problems. Sometimes clients feel a certain way, but they don’t know the reason why, or they don’t want to talk about why they feel the way they do.

I offer a free initial consultation if you would like to find out more about how hypnotherapy could help you, please get in touch. Appointments are available at my clinics in Bromsgrove and Quinton, or I offer home visits, if required.

Health Questions

Lisa Evans Reid Clinical Director at Reflect

more sebum the more bacteria will develop in your pores. In addition, to increased sebum and bacteria, a build-up of dead skin cells, will block your pores and hair follicles resulting in inflammation which could develop into acne in some people.

I get asked so many questions on what we can and cannot treat in clinic or what is this treatment and how does it work? So, I have decided to do an A – Z for you and give you as much information on the most common questions I am asked. We start with a big question

Can you help me, I have Acne? There are different types of acne, but Acne Vulgaris is the most common and is the focus of this feature. First, there is no magic cure for acne, it’s all about managing your symptoms. Acne Vulgaris can be quite complex and it’s important that you understand the stage you are at! Not only can you easily spread acne but also your mental health can be affected, and professional support can be very important. This is often where an aesthetician is worth their weight in gold because they understand the acne stages and are knowledgeable in what treatment and products will benefit you. Acne blights many people’s lives and is the most common skin condition we treat in the clinic. Most people associate acne with teenagers, and yes, you would be correct. However, adult-onset acne is also a genuine problem for all sexes.

As you can see in the above image, there are six stages of acne Vulgaris. Aestheticians can help you with all stages of acne, however, at Reflect if your acne is stage 4/5/6 we will always refer you to your GP for a complete diagnosis. GPs may prescribe medication if required, and of course a good skincare routine, and refer patients back to us for ongoing day to day management. Acne stage 1/2/3 usually are manageable by a skin clinic. At Reflect we offer a range of specific acne treatments tailored to your skin needs, including your homecare skin health routine and this is something you should look out for when choosing a clinic.

What causes acne?

It's a hormone thing!

Well, it's multiple factors, but basically spots develop due to the overproduction of sebum secreted by the sebaceous gland into the pores causing your skin to look oily! This excessive secretion is caused by your hormones. Skin Propionibacterium thrives in sebum so the

All acne is related to hormones, but Adult-onset acne can often be related or even triggered by other health concerns such as PMS, peri menopause, menopause, PCOS (poly cystic ovary syndrome) in women and stress, weight gain, and some prescribed medications in 34

Our Health Good skin Health and the correct skincare routine and products can have a massive positive impact on acne! I have seen countless acne sufferers at stage three/four drop to a manageable stage one/two with sound advice and support from an experienced aesthetician.

both sexes. It can become a real struggle to gain the upper hand, and a professional aesthetician will recognise this and be able to help you manage it or suggest perhaps a visit to your GP. You may be referred to an endocrinologist who can further investigate your symptoms. Endocrinologists are medical doctors who specialise in diagnosing and treating health conditions related to problems with the body's hormones, hormonal glands, and related issues.

So, if you are suffering, STOP going round in circles wasting money on product after product and having the same negative outcome. Book a skin consultation with an aesthetician and get the visual assessment and the help you need to manage your acne.

Did you Know "Avoid touching your face," as this is the primary way dirt and germs are transferred. A 2020 study by the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) estimated that we touch our faces sixteen times an hour!

NEW! HEAVEN SKINCARE LAUNCHES

COLLAGEN DROPS DEBORAH MITCHELL

DEBORAH MITCHELL unveils her new anti-ageing weapon. Renowned in the beauty industry for her game-changing beauty essentials, she has launched her latest innovation – Collagen Drops.

“Collagen is found in abundance in our skin when we are young, but as we get older the amount diminishes – in fact, by the time we’re 50 we’ve already lost up to a third, and this leads to a dry complexion and signs of ageing,” explains Deborah. “Thankfully, my new Collagen Drops help boost that lost collagen… and then some. I’ve been working on these new supplements for a number of years now and because I am using high levels of collagen the results so far have been just amazing.” She suggests adding a few drops in a glass or water each morning, mix in with Heaven’s Age Defiance Cream, or, if you have a blemish on your face, then add a drop directly to your skin and massage in. Katie has been using the new Collagen Drops for a month and has been delighted with the results: “I started using the drops every morning and evening. By week two I started to see the change – it literally happened overnight. I noticed that my skin was glowing when I woke up and later that day a relative ask me what skincare products I was using as she noticed the difference too. “Since then, I have noticed the shine on my hair is amazing. I have long dark hair and it can often look dull it is now so shiny that I’ve received so many compliments.

Once I completed my month’s supply of drops and I stopped taking them and more or less straight away I have seen a massive difference – my skin doesn’t have that extra glow and my hair has started to look dull again. It’s definitely time to reorder; I’ve realised I can’t live without my Collagen Drops - I want my glow back!” • Deborah has been busy researching, creating and testing these potentskincare supplements since 2016 as part of her Inner Beauty collection. • Available in Heaven salons and online, these new drops contain high levels of marine collagen to leave you looking and feeling – fabulous. • Thanks to their super skin-boosting collagen and hyaluronic acid content, they can also promote healthy, shiny hair.

Collagen Drops cost £37 for a box of three phials, which last 2 weeks and more. You can also buy them as a bi-weekly subscription online at: www.heavenskincare.com - saving £9.50 per box.

NEW! HEAVEN SKINCARE ALPINE DROPS It’s true that we are what we eat… but what if you could make every mouthful of food or every sip of your drink even better for you? Heaven’s Alpine Drops boost vitamin absorption and water purity to improve body function. foundation on all the time, and I’m not suffering the pain from spondylitis in my neck any more. They are so easy to use – I just add a drop in my drink whenever I think about it. And if I feel I need for an extra boost then I put a large squirt in a glass of squash and that makes me feel more energetic. If someone said I could not use them now, I would be devastated.”

Inspired by the very essence of the Alpines, where you’ll find the cleanest air and water molecules, they capture nature’s finest ingredients, including volcanic ash and pine sap, to help neutralise the negative impact pollutants can have on our bodies. There are three phials – Activator, Balancer and Maintenance – that work over a two-week cycle. Deborah used her Alpine Drops before and after a recent operation on her knees, leading to a speedy recovery and a return to work in just three weeks. “I also lost weight gradually, despite having an issue with my thyroid which had previously made it very difficult to shift those excess pounds. My skin looks clearer, like I have Alpine Drops cost £37 for a box of three phials, which last 2 weeks and more. emily in paris The hottest hairstyles are often influenced by popular TV shows, the most famous being `Rachel` from Friends but the latest Netflix’s phenomenon `Emily in Paris` has created a bang in hair salons this year. The show`s massive success has now inspired us all to recreate our own Parisian look. Influenced by the old Hollywood actresses Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot, timeless glamour is the perfect pick me up for Spring. Nick Malenko from Royston Blythe loves the show. ` It is true escapism into a world of style, beautiful people and features a favourite destination of mine St Tropez. I love the French`s sense of style and when it comes to their hair, they keep it simple, sleek and effortlessly stylish`. Award winning stylist Nick gives us his ultimate guide in creating the perfect French look…

French Wave `Emily is notorious with the French wave, the wave needs to be full, bouncy and with an incredibly glossy finish. To help create the look you need to keep the ends blunt but add soft long layers to add movement and hold the wave. If your hair is super fine, try adding hair extensions, they are affordable, quick to apply and add instant volume and thickness. After the winter months, invest in a salon glossing treatment to enhance your condition and add shine to your hair. We recommend an in salon Olaplex Treatment added to a toner to give depth and sheen to your hair`.

Our Hair & Beauty

High Ponytail `The Ponytail is a classic timeless look and featured a lot in the second series, super versatile and effortlessly elegant. Out are the high pony`s, think Brigette Bardot so less messy more sexier. Go with height on the crown and a low ponytail for a more 60`s feel. To create the look, blow-dry the hair smooth and bouncy but with body at the root area to give support and help hold. Back comb the crown area to add volume and height, smooth through but keep the ponytail low in the nape to ooze cool girl chic`.

The Wispy Fringe `Lily Collins has updated her look with the ultimate in low maintenance, chic wispy full fringe. Bangs (or fringes) have been massive on the catwalk and in salons last year and are still a statement look for 2022. Whatever the length of your hair, fringes give softness around the face, work with all face shapes and will instantly transform your look. Fringes need to be regularly maintained, home trims will only spell disaster. So do make sure you visit the salon every 4/6 weeks to keep it looking great`.

Hair Up `Hair up over the last few years has been very natural with an undone feel, so it has been great to create more structured shapes. Chignons, Stacked Plaits, and the Beehive were a big hit on the show and in the salon over the Christmas period. Hair up should not only be a favourite with Brides but classic Hair Up`s are an amazing way to achieve a glamorous look even in your jeans. The timeless classics are more difficult to recreate yourself at home, so book a visit to the salon`. 41

Our Mother's Day

Mothering Sunday an ancient celebration The origin of Mother’s Day go back to the ancient Greek and Romans.

Historically, churchgoers worshipped on Sundays at their nearest parish, known as their ‘daughter’ church. Centuries ago it was deemed important for people to return to their home or ‘mother’ church once a year.

The Greeks held an annual spring festival and used the occasion to honour Rhea, wife of Cronus and the mother of many deities of Greek mythology.

The return to the ‘mother’ church became an occasion for family reunions. Its a popular belief that this return is what led to the tradition of Mothering Sunday.

Ancient Romans, too, celebrated a spring festival, called Hilaria dedicated to Cybele, a mother goddess. The celebration lasted for three days and included parades and games.

The custom of celebrating Mothering Sunday died out almost completely by the 19th century. However, was celebrated again after World War II, when American servicemen brought the custom and commercial enterprises used it as an occasion for sales.

Mothering Sunday is the fourth Sunday of Lent and this year falls on 27th March. Its often referred to as Mothers’ Day, but that is in fact, a completely different American festival celebrated at a different time of year.

Today this special day, commercial or not, is a chance to reflect and give thanks to our mothers and is a particularly poignant time to remember loved ones no longer with us.

Traditionally, it was a day when employees, who were staying away from home, such as domestic servants, were given a day off and encouraged to visit their mother and family. 43

Escape to RHODES by Rebecca Underwood, Travel Journalist Rhodes lalysos - photo by Region of South Aegean

For those tempted to escape for a while, consider an adventure on the beautiful Greek island of Rhodes, located on the on the crossroads between Cyprus, Turkey and Egypt and on the eastern shores of the glittering azure waters of the Aegean Sea.

when the Knights relinquished Rhodes to the Ottomans, a number of Greek, Turkish and Jewish families shared the property, and although it is now a hotel it has retained the warmth of a home. The Kokkini Porta Rossa offers six spacious suites and I was privileged to be allocated the Katina suite, which measures 52 square metres. Features include a sumptuous king double bed swathed in cool, crisp Frette bedding, which ensured a deep slumber. The tranquil and comfortable open-plan sleeping and lounging areas offer intoxicating views of the castle wall, the hotel’s chapel and part of the Old Town and the gorgeous bathroom features a freestanding tub and a separate walk-in shower with a 40cm rainfall shower head; perfect for invigorating morning ablutions.

The capital of the Dodecanese islands, Rhodes is known as the island of knights, and the city of Rhodes, in the north, attracts thousands of visitors captivated by its rich and colourful history. Fortified by towering walls and gates, this well preserved treasure was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. Prior to the Covid 19 pandemic I was fortunate the visit the island and I took a leisurely stroll around the medieval town and noted the unnamed streets and narrow meandering lanes. I was instantly mesmerised and distinctly aware that I was walking in the footsteps of the Knights of St John who ruled the region from 1309 until 1522 and I stopped to admire the imposing medieval buildings, the traditional fountains, the quaint shops crammed with colourful trinkets and the beautifully ornate Byzantine and Gothic churches.

Up with the larks, I made my way to the western edge of the city and there on top of the Ayios Stefanos hill is the unmistakeable view of the unfortified Acropolis of Rhodes, which dates back to 200 BC. Climbing the hill, I entered through the entrance of the medieval castle of the Knights of St John and the Byzantine Chapel of St John and then took a stroll around the ruins, casting my inquisitive eyes over the public buildings, temples and sanctuaries, all built on stepped terraces. The temple of Pythian Apollo, which stands on a rectangular terrace at the southern end of the site, features spectacular columns and parts of the architrave have been well restored.

Seeking a stylish place to stay, I checked into the luxurious, Kokkini Porta Rossa, a peaceful boutique hotel, located in the centre of the Old Town and a stone’s throw from the Gate of St. John. Built on the site of a knight’s residence, a small church dedicated to St. John and an armoury, the hotel presents many intriguing touches of a bygone era. At the end of 1522, 52

Our Travel The Temple of Athena Polias and Zues Polieus feature a columned portico on all four sides and this place is said to be where the citizens of Rhodes kept the texts of their treaties with other states. For more adventure visitors are welcome to take the boat from Mandraki Harbour to the dazzling white village of Lindos, which is situated in a large bay on the east coast of the island. Be sure to visit the site of the Acropolis of Lindos, a citadel, which was fortified by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, the Knights of St John and the Ottomans. Should you be feeling a trifle weary, make your way to the beach for an afternoon snooze on the sands or consider scuba diving, paragliding, windsurfing, jet skiing or water skiing and when you need to rest after all that activity you can catch the return boat to Mandraki Harbour at 18.00 hours.

Kokkini Porta Rossa's Entrance

For a rather special dining experience, I visited Alexis Fish Restaurant on Sokratous Street. This local family run restaurant has continued to attract international celebrities and VIP’s since the 1950’s. The menu features the most scrumptious dishes including succulent mussels steamed in wine, smoked salmon scallops in white vodka sauce and octopus cooked in ink, which, accompanied by a chilled glass of the house white, which was served with aplomb. I then made a toast to Rhodes, the enchanting island of the Knights of St John.

up a bit and browned. Roughly chop the Jalapeños then tip over the corn with a good sprinkle of mozzarella and chopped parsley.

Remove the husk from the corn cobs and slice the ends from each side. Stand the corn cobs vertically on your chopping board and VERY CAREFULLY cut down the middle into 2 halves and then again into 4 lengths.

Mix together equal amount of yoghurt and mayo with a good slug of harrisa paste, add more if you like it hot.

Mazda MX-30 Sport LUX and in fact the gauge indicated after a lengthy 14 hours charge, the 100% capacity had been reached but it was only showing 105miles, this to me is a bit negative. If I was buying this car I would have no qualms whatsoever of ownership but I really do need more miles.

Mazda has introduced to the SUV range their all-new MX-30, the difference from other SUV’s it is pure electric, writes Bob Hickman. The exterior appearance is quite pleasant on the eye, angular with lots of curves.

The driving dynamics of the vehicle were of a really enjoyable friend, the level of equipment was superb, driving an electric powered vehicle has to be experienced to be believed.

Powered by an electric motor producing in old terms 145ps, this gives linear acceleration with a 0-60 in 9.7 seconds and meagre top speed of 87mph. The power is from a Lithium battery with a capacity of 35.5 kWh. I have to admit it was one of the disappointments, I would have liked to have seen much more capacity.

The Sport Lux as tested will probably be one of the best sellers in the range, with 18 inch bright metallic alloy wheels, power seats, lumber support, and a smart keyless ignition. One feature that does amaze are the doors, have a close look at the pictures, there are 2 rear doors, they are what I class as suicide doors, they open outwardly and the only way you can open them is by having the front doors open.

Mazda suggests that 124miles on the combined cycle may be achievable, I found however in the cold period that I had the vehicle on test, when maximum utilisation of screen heaters, seat warmers, wipers, headlamps and all the other paraphernalia, this dropped to marginally under 100 miles 60

Our Motoring All the controls are easy to understand, a circular wheel on the transmission tunnel, operates the satellite navigation, phone and the plethora of other facilities. The vehicle also has an electric parking brake, auto hold, cruise control, speed limiter, the heads up display to tell you what speed you are doing or the current speed limits. An app on your phone allows an integrated system so you can transform the car to start warming up before you get to it, in addition, it would also allow you to stop or start charging should you have your own power point outside. Talking about power if you are buying this car you need to have a large home charging unit installed. I plugged it in to a 13amp to get maximum charge but it did take over 14 hours.

for you because it was really a delight to be cocooned within its interior and experience the driving dynamics. The test car had a 3-year or 60,000 miles warranty, the battery life warranty is quoted at 8 years or 100,00 miles, and had an on the road price of £31,315, if you knock off the Government OLEV grant it brings the car down to £28,815.

Time will tell with Mazda if the MX30 is going to be a success, if you only do local stop/start local journeys, then this could be the vehicle

Inflation on the rise

Siobhan Record Our Lifestyle’s Financial Expert

that appear cheap relative to a fundamental measure such as book-value – offer the opportunity of diversification and higher expected returns.

Inflation measures the general increase in the price of goods and services. Left unchecked, it can be a dangerous foe to the long-term investor, eroding the purchasing power of one’s hard-earned cash over time. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, inflation numbers have frequented the headlines. Financial stimulus around the globe has meant that more money circulating in the economy is chasing a similar (or fewer) number of goods and services, resulting in price increases.

Whilst no perfect inflation hedge exists – gold and commodities, for example, are no silver bullet – it is sensible to expect a welldiversified, low-cost portfolio consisting of equities and high-quality bonds to deliver above inflation returns over the medium to long term.

The UK 2021 inflation rate is 5.4%, using the consumer prices index (CPI). This is a number not seen as high since the early 90’s and one can get a sense of how quickly purchasing power reduces at these higher-than-average rates1.

Our investment philosophy at Cre8 is a systematic approach. Our portfolios are low cost and well diversified. We will help you navigate investments, avoid potentially costly mistakes and ensure you are comfortable with risk.

It is true that a general rise in prices can be uncomfortable for investors, reducing the ‘real’ (after inflation) returns earned over a given period. That being said, a systematic investment philosophy is built to weather such storms. Equity markets offer the opportunity to participate in the future earnings of global corporations, whose prospects rely on the goods and services they provide. WRITE OR UPDATE YOUR WILL THIS MARCH AND SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL HOSPICES The Hospice Charity Partnership has once again partnered with big-hearted solicitors across the West Midlands to offer you a cheaper way to sort your will – all whilst raising funds for the hospice. From Tuesday 1st to Thursday 31st March, a number of solicitors and will writers will be taking part in the hospice’s ‘Make a Will Month’, in which they’ll be waiving their usual fees and asking for a charitable donation to be made to the hospice instead.

For wills requiring more specialist advice, the solicitors will agree a donation in advance.

The generous initiative will give you the opportunity to write or update this important document for a much cheaper price – for example, suggested donations are £100 for a single will which typically cost £185, or £125 for a joint will which costs £225 on average.

To take part in Make a Will Month, visit: www.birminghamhospice.org.uk/make-a-will or https://www.johntaylorhospice.org.uk/leavea-gift-in-your-will/make-a-will-month/

You will be able to sort your will by arranging a home visit, completing it online, or even visiting the solicitor at their office. All donations will go towards The Hospice Charity Partnership, which provides vital care and support to people across the city and their loved ones who are living with life-limiting illness.
