POETRY LAUNCH Thursday 19th January @ 8.00pm
Bettina John von Freyend-Peterseil for crying out loud - voice of an exile
Bettina John von Freyend-Peterseil was born at the end of World War II in Germany. She exiled herself early, travelling the world, never able to settle anywhere for long. She now lives in the West of Ireland where she and her husband have built their home, raised their children and tend the land. With her first poetry compilation,Bettina offers a personal account of the mindset of a self-imposed exile. Orflaith Ni Conaill, novelist and poet, has this to say: “These poems chart the journey of an exile and a pilgrim soul. The work is brave, honest and powerful. The poet searches and questions endlessly, glimpsing fleetingly moments of belonging in odd places especially in Mayo, in the ‘lonesome bog desert’, where she has made her home. Through this act of remembering her life, she has woven herself whole. The reader is privileged to journey with her.” Bettina will read from the collection on the night, which will also feature special guests. Adm. FREE

JAZZ Thursday 23rd February @ 8.00pm
Music Network presents Dinosaur (UK)
Photo: Dave Stapleton
Following boldly in the footsteps of the likes of Polar Bear and Phronesis, Dinosaur skilfully weaves electric-jazz, Celtic folk melodies and North African drumming styles into a sound reminiscent of late-1960s Miles Davis. Switching between synth and trumpet, band leader Laura Jurd has been heralded as one of the strongest, most interesting new trumpet voices in jazz and her eclectic and thoughtful compositions are delivered with precision and panache by a well-oiled rhythm section comprising Elliot Galvin on keyboards, Conor Chaplin on bass and drummer Corrie Dick. The result: utterly compelling live performances and a wonderfully cohesive group sound - a playful fusion of sparse, epigrammatic trumpet lines, catchy riffs, shifting dance grooves and pulsing bass lines. With the recent release of the highly-acclaimed album Together, As One, Dinosaur is destined to build upon the group’s fast-growing international reputation. Catch them while you can! “Sophisticated and technically awesome.” - The Guardian (on Jurd) “A masterful debut of a quartet that fully deserves to conquer the world by storm. POETRY Thursday 27th April @ 8.00pm National Poetry Day Event
The Linenhall joins forces with Poetry Ireland to honour the work of our extraordinary poets in celebration of National Poetry Day. Sport has long been at the heart of Irish life. It’s one of the ways in which we stay in touch – a knot that binds one generation to another. Hardly surprising then that so many great Irish poets have been inspired to write about it. Poetry Ireland’s anthology Everything to Play For (edited by John McAuliffe, with a foreword from Sonia O’Sullivan) brings 99 sports themed poems by leading Irish poets including Seamus Heaney, Paul Durcan, Vona Groarke, Mary O’Malley and Rita Ann Higgins. All major sporting disciplines feature including hurling, Gaelic football, cycling, athleticS and rugby. This event brings together some prominent sporting people, poets and writers to read their favourite poems from the anthology and to reflect on the links between sport and the arts in Irish life. Adm. €10
WORLD CINEMA Tuesday 2nd May @ 8.00pm Hell or High Water
USA 2016 102mins English language Cert: 15A A story about the collision of the old and new West, two brothers - Toby (Chris Pine), a straight-living, divorced father trying to make a better life for his son; and Tanner (Ben Foster), a shorttempered ex-con with a loose trigger finger - come together to rob branch after branch of the bank that is foreclosing on their family land. Vengeance seems to be theirs until they find themselves in the crosshairs of a relentless, foul-mouthed Texas Ranger (Jeff Bridges) looking for one last triumph on the eve of his retirement. As the brothers plot a final bank heist to complete their plan, a showdown looms at the crossroads where the last honest law man and a pair of brothers with nothing to live for except family collide. Directed by David Mackenzie. “Rich with details... beautifully worked out. The performances are uniformly and quietly terrific.” - Stephanie Zacharek, TIME “A mesmerizing, modern-day western.” - Peter Travers, Rolling Stone “It’s stark and breathtaking and gorgeous to behold.” - Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times Adm. €7 / €5 (concessions)

THEATRE Thursday 4th May @ 8.00pm Patrick Talbot Productions - The Quiet Land
by Malachy McKenna, starring Des Keogh and Derry Power Two elderly farmers, Eamon and Nashee, meet at a gate on a remote hillside. These men are old friends, old rivals, old neighbours. They are men of heart, of humour, of hardness. Their conversation is a throwback to a gentler time, when silence was as telling as declaration, and meaning was more often found between the lines than on them. But there’s nothing gentle about today’s conversation. In facing the bitter reality of their remote defiance, they have grown fearful and desperate. Now they are forced to confront each other with some heartbreaking truths that test their friendship to its limit. The Quiet Land is a celebration of the humour, resilience and endearing innocence of an exiled generation as it struggles to survive in the isolated rural Ireland of today. It is Malachy McKenna’s heartfelt tribute to a rare breed of forgotten men who live a long way in off the road. Winner of the PJ O’Connor Award 2014, directed by Bairbre Ni Chaoimh. “Two quietly epic performances…..don’t miss it.” - Emer O Kelly, Sunday Independent “A glorious, perfectly-pitched pair of performances.” - The Scotsman Adm: €16 / €14 (concessions)

BLUEGRASS/JAZZ/FOLK/CLASSICAL Thursday 11th May @ 8.00pm
Music Network presents Darol Anger & Republic of Strings (USA)
With his unique genre-bending blend of bluegrass, jazz, folk and classical styles, Grammy-nominated fiddler Darol Anger is a master of the unexpected, darting from Swedish polkas to Brazilian choro before segueing seamlessly into a soul classic - all delivered with the rollicking abandon of a hootenanny. Anger developed his signature sound working alongside great improvisers such as Stéphane Grappelli, Martin Hayes, Jerry Douglas and Béla Fleck, and over the past 40 years has produced an array of critically-acclaimed albums. For this musical journey, he is aided and abetted by a trio of nimble-fingered pioneers: long-time collaborator and 5-time Grand National Fiddle Champion Tristan Clarridge; acclaimed multi-instrumentalist John Mailander; and riveting vocalist Emy Phelps. “Anger is to fiddle what Béla Fleck is to banjo.” - Minneapolis Star Tribune “A cutting edge string quartet… wildly virtuosic.” - Los Angeles Times “Ground-breaking.” -San Francisco Chronicle [on Republic of Strings] “On the front edge of progressive acoustic music.” - Fiddler Magazine [on Darol Anger] Adm. €17 / €14 (concessions)
VISUAL ART: GALLERY
VISUAL ART: GALLER Friday 25th November - Saturday 14th January Jason Deans - Nevertheless
“What I really look for in my work is how the use of raw, natural materials can resonate, respond and retort to human interactions on the contemporary world.” - Jason Deans “Nevertheless stands testament to significant social political commentary within the ephemeral constructs created. The use of traditional artistic and raw natural materials in Jason’s practice is important, as the instability and wonder it creates within the work is key to the viewer’s experience within the space. Often the audience is imbued with the view of them as a strategic player in the piece, a creative interplay between art and audience, the artist working always towards a contextual expression that feels cohesive and complete.” Jason Deans is a Dublin-based artist. He has shown in solo and group exhibitions throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland including Dublin, Belfast, Tullamore and Galway. 2016 has also seen Jason as resident artist with both Draíocht Arts Centre and DIT School of Creative Arts. VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 20th January - Saturday 25th February Elaine Leader - Framework
An exhibition of drawings, models and installation work by Elaine Leader. “My practice involves drawing, architectural models and temporary experiential installations. These are psychological, disrupted, in-between spaces, which are activated by the viewer. They employ familiar kinetic architectural and engineering mechanisms from everyday life and repurpose them in a way to de-stabilise our preconceptions of space and how we move through it.” Leader was born in Dublin and completed her MFA in Sculpture NCAD in 2012. She has exhibited extensively in Ireland and N. Ireland, as well as in Sweden, France and the US. http://elaineleader.com/ “In her practice she creates ambitious large scale and complex installations that need to be experienced in order to complete their understanding. She creates complex architectural spaces that are activated by the viewer... The final and most important collaboration takes place with her audience, often unbeknownst to them, which makes Leader’s practice unique within the artistartwork dichotomy.” - Séamus Mc Cormack (artist & curator) Adm. Free Official opening on Friday 20th January @ 7.30pm. All welcome.
VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 3rd March - Saturday 8th April Nuala Clarke - As Above So Below “The show explores the primary alchemical formula ‘as above so below’ through an endeavour to ‘make’ space. We constantly move in and out of spaces both physical and subtle that hold memories, prompt emotional reenactments, incite awe. The paintings in this show, explore deeply personal preferences of order while simultaneously claiming and offering what was once known but is now on the periphery of awareness. They also offer what is not known, yet deeply within and without us. The images and sound installation suggest a connection to primordial order; mysterious, moody, celebratory; full of shaman ghosts, air and land.” Visual artist Nuala Clarke lives and works between Co. Mayo and New York City. She is a fellow of the Ballinglen Arts Foundation in Ballycastle, Co. Mayo. She has exhibited widely in Ireland and in the US. http://nualaclarke.com/ Adm. Free

VISUAL ART: GALLERY Thursday 13th April - Saturday 20th May Robert Dunne - Alter
Robert Dunne works mainly with plaster and used wood, and says his work “is a way to reframe our ‘made’ environment. I try to capture physical and visual elements of my surroundings and reimagine, juxtapose and alter their structure and meaning to make new but vaguely familiar scenarios”. Robert studied at the National Collage of Art and Design, Dublin and the Museum School of Fine Art in Boston. Last year he showed work in Carlow’s VISUAL, and was awarded a residency from Arthouse in Stradbally. This year he has two solo shows, one here at the Linenhall Arts Centre, and one in Gray Contemporary in Houston, Texas. Adm. Free Official opening on Thursday 13th April @ 7.30pm. All welcome.

The second exhibition features works by Saidhbhín Gibson, Margaret McDonnell, Cecilia Moore, Peter Nash, Jane O’Sullivan and Verona Stellet. Cabinet of Wonders #2 will run until midJanuary. VISUAL ART: FOYER Wednesday 25th January - Saturday 25th February Hawthorn Group
The Hawthorn Group is made up of seven individuals who are living in social housing in Aras Attracta. With support from the UPSTART scheme, this project focused on creating art that could be enjoyed and shared with the Hawthorn Group and their local Community. In creating this, the Hawthorn Group worked towards realising their own undiscovered artistic potential. As it was the group’s first time applying for the UPSTART programme, they enlisted the help of local Community Art resource Mayo Art Squad. The group developed their talents and skills by experimenting with different materials and methods of art. This project will hopefully be the first of many that will allow them to find their individual styles and expressions of art. UPSTART is an initiative of Mayo County Council Arts Office and The Hawthorn Group acknowledges the support received under this scheme this year. Adm. Free Official opening on Wednesday 25th January at 2.30pm. All welcome.

In week one, Mayo in Colour, colour and the local landscape will be the heart of the matter, with colour mixing the main focus. Week two, The Form that Surrounds You, will explore composition and the arrangement of formal elements within a piece of art. And week three, Action and Reaction, will delve into abstraction and the joy of putting paint onto paper. Each workshop will begin with a presentation and discussion about the concepts being explored. There will also be opportunities to visit Nuala’s exhibition As Above So Below in relation to the weekly subjects. Nuala Clarke was educated at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin and is represented by Boltax Gallery in New York where she lived and worked for two decades.
