The Imposter

UK 2012 95mins Language: English A totally gripping documentary feature by Bart Layton based on bizarre true life events. In 1994, 13 year-old Texan boy Nicholas Barclay vanished without a trace. In 1997 the boy is found in Spain, with a story of kidnap by shadowy captors. His family is ecstatic to have him back no matter how strange the circumstances, but back in Texas suspicions begin to surface. How could the Barclay’s blonde, blue-eyed son have returned with darker skin and eyes? How could his personality and even accent have changed so profoundly? Why does the family not seem to notice the glaring differences? And if this person isn’t the Barclay’s missing child, who is he? And what really happened to Nicholas? A fusion of confessional interviews, strikingly creative re-enactments and suspenseful storytelling that poses questions about truth, perception and the ease of fooling people who want to be fooled. “Pure, delicious suspense.” - Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian “Dazzling.” - Tirkdad Derakhshani, Philadelphia Inquirer “Enthralling.” - David Rooney, Hollywood Reporter Adm. €5

THEATRE Thursday 24th January @ 8.00pm

Big Guerrilla Productions - The Sand Park

The Sand Park is the sometimes hilarious account of how big-hearted Offaly farmer James Anthony Lowery, a man in his mid-fifties, came to terms with the death of his son fifteen years ago and now, more recently, that of his wife Rose. It’s a play about rural Irish life and the way we cope with the inevitable, about how life and death and humour and love and sadness all live in the same house together… And then a strange thing happens… Funny, uplifting and real, The Sand Park is a new play written and performed by Seamus O’Rourke, following on from the success of his sell-out hit comedy Victor’s Dung, which played 95 performances to packed houses around the country. The Sand Park has been getting standing ovations wherever it’s been performed. Come and see why. “Unashamedly rural, unassumingly brilliant… Utterly compelling, funny and tender, a beautifully crafted piece of theatre... O’Rourke is absolutely superb.” - Will Govan, The Moth magazine “Turns all the clichés of how the Irish deal with death upside down. I cried and I laughed, but I left the theatre with a lot to think about.” - Charlie McGettigan, Shannonside Radio Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions)

I’ll Live ‘til I Die - Celebrating the Life of Delia Murphy

Liam Clancy described Delia Murphy as a pivotal figure who took up the Irish ballad and turned it into something of her own. I’ll Live ‘til I Die is a celebration in words and song of the iconic Delia (1903-1971), the renowned Mayo-born singer who gave the Irish ballad international recognition and ensured its everlasting appeal. Musician and teacher Gerry Anderson plays and talks through Delia’s career drawing on his knowledge of the singer as the first inspiration as a folk balladeer and Traditional musician, and looking at her place in Irish music and the people she inspired as Ireland’s first lady of song. A selection of Delia’s favourite songs such as The Spinning Wheel and If I Were a Blackbird will be performed by professional actress and singer Márín O’Donovan; and Delia’s niece, the poet and playwright Carmen Cullen, adds some family reminiscences and reads from her novel Two Sisters Singing, a book inspired by the largerthan-life Delia herself. “She became a heroine and the most popular singer in the country.” - Liam Clancy Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions)

Dyad Productions - Female Gothic

An artist, gripped by the clutching fingers of a dead past; a scientist, defying nature in the dark realm of the senses; an expectant father driven mad by creeping shadows… In the unquiet, Stygian darkness between life and death, a lone, haunted woman tells chilling tales of the macabre and terrifying, illuminating the curious frailties of human nature… The Victorian fascination with tales of mystery and the supernatural created an enduring legacy of Gothic fiction; but it is often the male writers that we remember. Many thrilling and eerie stories from the great female writers of that era have gathered dust and been forgotten. Until now. This dark celebration of female gothic is adapted and performed by Rebecca Vaughan (Austen’s Women, I, Elizabeth), and directed by Olivier Award Winner, Guy Masterson. “Exquisite… Brilliant. Beautiful.” - One4Review “Holds the audience in the palm of its hand. Her artistic practice is inspired by the natural environment in the west of Ireland where she spent her formative years, and the wild flowers and plants that populate the countryside. Captivated by these enchanting plants, Emma creates collections of these wild flowers out of glass, eternally capturing their beauty. “The transparency of the glass is intentionally maintained in order to heighten the ambiguity of an organic ecosystem. Adding colour to some petals allows each to become characteristically unique like the environment which inspires their conception.” Emma graduated with a BDes (Hons) from NCAD. One of her Degree pieces was purchased by the National Museum of Ireland, while her Thesis Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka and their glass models of sea creatures was acquired by the Rakow Library, Corning Museum of Glass, New York as part of its Blaschka Archive. Emma received a Scholarship from the Craft Council of Ireland under the Future Makers Awards 2009. Adm. free

VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 1st - Saturday 23rd February Olivia Irvine - Some of These Places

This exhibition shows recent paintings in oil and egg tempera on linen by Scottish artist Olivia Irvine. In the artist’s own words: “I get my inspiration from my immediate surroundings, including domestic interiors, streets, gardens and family holidays. The actual locations act as a pretext for the paintings, as they are not depictions of the real places but rather a reinvention or reinterpretation of them. The subject matter comes from sketches or paintings made on the spot, but also from studio set-ups, memories past and recent, and my imagination. Pattern, colour and gesture play as much a part as ideas and narrative, as the dynamics of the picture-making process itself throw up choices and surprises. I feel this approach, which mixes fantasy, memory and reality, better reflects how I feel about the psychological issues of place, identity and autobiography. Although these are deeply personal paintings, because they are not specific I hope that they will open the door to the viewer’s own imagination.” Since 2000, Olivia he exhibited widely in Scotland, England, Spain and the USA. Adm. free Official opening on Friday 1st February at 7.30pm. All welcome.

VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 5th - Saturday 27th April Vauney Strahan - Substratum

An exhibition of paintings in oil on board by artist Vauney Strahan, exploring the relationship and the dialogue that exists between our inner world and the spaces that surround us. “As human beings we are continuously weaving our way in and around the physical spaces we occupy,” she explains. “What interests me however is the simultaneous navigation of a world less tangible than this physical realm… the inner landscape, the perceptual architecture of the mind and memory, the emotional and the spiritual realms. My chief artistic interest concerns the place where these two landscapes converge, where the subconscious meets the conscious; where mind meets matter.” With degrees in History of Art and Fine Art, since 2006 Strahan has exhibited widely in Ireland and has also participated in group shows in Spain and Germany. She recently moved back to Ireland to take up a Fellowship awarded by Ballinglen Arts Foundation, Co. Mayo. She now works from her studio in Dublin.
