WORLD CINEMA Tuesday 6th May @ 8.00pm Gloria

Chile 2012 110mins Spanish with English subtitles Gloria is a vivacious, free-spirited divorcee who gets on with her grown up children, is fairly happy in her work, and contents herself with the one-night stands that she finds in the singles bars of Santiago. Defiant in her fragile happiness, she meets and in due course falls for quietly-spoken ‘silver fox’ Rodolfo, a fellow divorcee who clearly adores her, but who comes with baggage and family ties of his own. Is this true love, and if so, can it endure, or will the past get in the way? Underpinned by a superb central performance by Paulina García as Gloria, director Sebastián Lelio examines the trajectories of older age set in the milieu of the contemporary middle-class of Chile’s Pinochet generation. “Astute, unpretentious, thrillingly humane.” – A.O. Scott, NY Times “Funny, melancholy and ultimately uplifting… enormously satisfying.” - David Rooney, Hollywood Reporter “Warm-hearted, emotionally engaging… a terrific central performance.” – Martin Turner, ViewLondon “Pitch perfect, terrifically written.” – Variety Adm: €5

Ramor Theatre - A Night In November

When Ulster Protestant, Kenneth McCallister finds himself on the football terraces for a crucial Northern Ireland v Republic of Ireland World Cup qualifying match, little does he know that his hum-drum life is about to change forever. This production of Marie Jones’ smash-hit one-man show features veteran actor, writer and director Padraic McIntyre (The Night Joe Dolan’s Car Broke Down) as Kenneth, a Protestant dole clerk in search of his own identity and ultimately coming to terms as an Irish Protestant. “I am a free man, I am a Protestant man, I am an Irish man.” Marie Jones’ (Fly Me To The Moon, Stones In His Pockets) enduringly humorous and challenging play is both uncomfortable and compelling as it lays bare the issues of Protestant identity in 1990s’ Northern Ireland. This passionate and often hilarious show has enjoyed productions all over the world including the West End and a successful six month run off-Broadway. Directed by Paddy Farrelly. “Hard to resist... dark, knowing humour.” - Jane Coyle, Irish Theatre Magazine “Emotional potency and touching observations… poignant mix of funny and sad… as relevant as ever.” - Culture Northern Ireland Adm: €16 / €14 (concessions) / €10 (special Bealtaine rate for 65+)

FILM SCREENING/LAUNCH Monday 12th May @ 6.00pm The Room

The Room is a documentary film about the Sacred Heart Arts Programme at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Castlebar, Co. Mayo. The film explores the small moments of magic that happen in the course of the arts programme; moments that allow for growth for both participants and the artist. Using a fly-on-the-wall approach, the film is a powerful portrayal of the long-stay hospital residents who have an acquired brain injury as a result of stroke, accident or conditions such as dementia or Alzheimers and reveals how the arts programme impacts on their daily lives. In 2013, artist Tom Meskell and filmmaker Róisín Loughrey were awarded a bursary from artsandhealth.ie to document through film the arts programme which is facilitated by Tom. The bursary award was funded by the Arts Council and the Cork Arts and Health Programme, HSE South and aims to encourage high quality documentation of arts and health practice to support a greater national understanding of the nature of this work. The launch of the documentary film (11mins) will be followed by a post show discussion with Tom and Róisín. Adm. Free

Bigger Picture Projects - Postscript

A poignant and humorous account of a woman-turned-detective on a mission to reveal the truth. “From a very early age I was told I was adopted. In fairness I think my parents had no choice but to tell me, what with me being redheaded with pale skin in a family with dark skin and dark hair. While I loved being able to say I was adopted when I was a child (because it made me feel exotic), I also learned that it was a word that was used by adults with a dropped voice. ‘Bad blood will out’ was a phrase that was often thrown around in conversation in relation to adopted children in 70s and 80s Ireland.” A highly acclaimed production from its premiere run at Dublin Fringe 2013, written by Noelle Brown and Michéle Forbes, performed by Noelle Brown and Bríd Ní Neachtain, directed by Conor Hanratty. “A moving story stoically enacted by Brown and Bríd Ní Neachtain, who beautifully brings to life the letters that form the linchpin of Brown’s journey... a powerful piece of work.” - The Irish Times “Haunting.” - Irish Theatre Magazine “Gentle, sad, funny… A DELIGHT.” - Irish Independent Adm: €16 / €14 (concessions) / €10 (special Bealtaine rate for 65+) NB: Running time 58 minutes

MUSICAL THEATRE Friday 1st August @ 8.00pm

Brendan MacQuaile - March Away My Brothers

March Away My Brothers is a one man show taken from the book of the same name by Brendan MacQuaile. It follows the journey of a young lad, Lawrence Kelly from Bridgefoot Street in Dublin’s Liberties to the Christmas Truce in 1914, somewhere near the Messines ridge in Flanders where many Irish fought and died during the course of this terrible conflagration. Larry looks back with the excitement of the early call to arms still palpable, the Guinness Pals brigade forming after Kitcheners call to arms and the sheer chaos and melee of new troops arriving in France, gung ho, ready to serve the crown, and do their bit before it was ‘over by Christmas’. Many of the popular songs of the time such as It’s a Long Way to Tipperary and There’s a Long Long Trail aWinding are included as an integral part of this fascinating tale. “What a great show , we enjoyed ourselves immensely.” - Joe Duffy, RTE “Our members sang along and enjoyed every note.” - Des Byrne, Dublin Fusiliers Association Adm. €15

VISUAL ART Friday 2nd - Saturday 31st May

Siobhan McGibbon - The cultivation of a fallacy

Siobhan McGibbon’s practice is predominantly sculpturebased. Her work derives from a fascination with “extraordinary medical conditions that essentially force the host to exist on the edge of anatomy”. The artist examines the boundaries of anatomy through a series of investigations that engage with the notion of misconception and the cultivation of a fallacy of an illness or medical condition, resulting in and imagined inner bodily landscape created from a collective of misinterpretations. The work is influenced by the evolution of clinical teratology, the historical study of abnormalities both real and imagined, and by the modern scientific study of teratogenesis - from the Greek meaning ‘monster making’ - the study of abnormal growths in the foetus, and questions whether the misconceptions of the uncanny body have assisted in the formation of socially accepted notions of ‘normal’ anatomy. Siobhan McGibbon is an Irish artist based in Roscommon. She graduated from GMIT in Galway in 2009, and has exhibited nationally and internationally. Adm: Free Official opening on Friday 2nd May at 7.30pm. All welcome.

VISUAL ART Friday 6th June - Saturday 12th July Sarah Pfrommer - SHIFT

The inspiration and subject of Sara Pfrommer’s video work is Nature and herself. Acting as both actor and camera operator at the same time, she is interested in seemingly ordinary events of her immediate surroundings. By minutely shifting standard video conditions, she raises new questions. These shifts occur when she uses optical blur or repeats simple actions again and again. What she is looking for are events that occur on the borderline of control and its loss, and the intensity created by this tension. SHIFT presents video and photographic work created during Sara’s 6-month stay on Achill Island in 2013, funded by the German Academic Exchange Service DAAD. Berlin-based artist Sara Pfrommer was born in Germany in 1980. She studied Fine Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts Dresden under Monika Brandmeier, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki. VISUAL ART Friday 29th August - Saturday 11th October

Amanda Jane Graham - Warrior’s One in Three

It has been substantially documented that cancer will touch one in three of us. Warriors One in Three is a mixed media exhibition that acknowledges the stoic bravery, dignity and resilience of people that have faced serious illness. “Through this exhibition the victim becomes the warrior by addressing perceptions of conflicting cultural projections played out through society. My practice is a trajectory of self-reflection, personal narrative, and memoirs where the viewer completes the experience. Handmade process is essential to the practice. The traditional mediums of drawing, fine print, collage, embroidery and wool crafts are key to generating the intricate visual representation that penetrates the memory of the observer creating unconscious and organic emotional reactions. The exhibition will have the power touch, engage and connect with the collective experience of the audience because it will be tender, uplifting and compelling.” Amanda completed an MA Fine Art at National College of Art and Design, Dublin in 2011. Adm. Free Official opening on Friday 29th August at 7.30pm. All welcome.

NATIONAL DRAWING DAY Saturday 17th May, 2.00pm-5.30pm

Quick on the Draw A Portraiture Event Marking National Drawing Day To celebrate National Drawing Day, we’ve asked two accomplished artists, Gráinne O’Reilly and John Brady, to join us in the Linenhall Foyer and make quick drawn (approx 5-10mins) portraits of anyone wishing to sit for them. And while the sitter sits and is drawn, people will be free to watch the artists making the drawings. Each person drawn will be charged €5, and will take the drawing away with them - an original artwork made and signed by a recognised artist - great value, we’re sure you will agree! Gráinne O’Reilly is one of Mayo’s most prolific painters. She studied fine art at Sligo Institute of Technology and her work has been exhibited throughout the country, including solo shows at the Linenhall Arts Centre and Westport’s Custom House Studios. She is currently also a presenter on Westport Community Radio’s Arts Show WRFM 98.2. Painter and visual artist John Brady produces work which is a playful mix of contemporary concerns, personal motifs and the everyday. Based in the West of Ireland, his painting and various other art works have been collected by AIB Bank, Bank of Ireland, OPW, The Law Society of Ireland and Alliance Français. So come along on the day, watch and enjoy, and maybe even come away with a personal piece of artwork by a real artist! And in the process, celebrate the creative act of drawing with us.

ALL EARS SHHHH! DON’T KEEP IT A SECRET! If you’ve had a good time at the Linenhall - a brilliant night of music, a great theatre show or an inspiring workshop - we’d really appreciate it if you would tell your friends about it.

TELL US! We love to get feedback on what we do here at the Linenhall, whether it’s something we’ve done well, or something we can improve on - your feedback helps keep us on our toes! Feel free to drop us a line, send an email or pick up the phone. E: linenhall@anu.ie T: 094 9023733
