Many of the popular songs of the time such as It’s a Long Way to Tipperary and There’s a Long Long Trail a-Winding are included as an integral part of this fascinating tale. VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 7th - Saturday 29th September Eoin Butler - Inscapes

During the course of his MA in Fine Art at the NCAD in 2004, Eoin Butler began making drawings from his native Midlands landscape, a personalized view of the local landscape observed and imagined. Eoin’s work now tends towards a delicate abstraction, and engaging in the creative play that embraces the dynamics of visual form: problem solving, exploring pattern, colour and space. “The work might be figurative or abstract. It grows out of an enquiry, a creative response and energy to ideas, materials and the combinations of sometimes incongruous and juxtaposed odds and ends.” “Butler has always endeavoured to open a discourse between material reality and this unseen spiritual inscape,” observes commentator Desmond Kenny, “colour, forms and materials combine and resonate to reveal this inner quality of our visual world.” Eoin gives the work its own identity, “creating anew, and evolving a fresh dialogue in the making”, which critic and poet Cherry Smyth has described as “a rare, gentle and profound skill.” Eoin works full-time in his studio in Dun Laoghaire. For this exhibition, the 20 members of the studios will work with arts writer Michaële Cutaya, who is curating this exhibition, in presenting a diverse exhibition of work in a wide range of media that represents their varied practices. Michaële explains the currency of the show: “Latency or the state of being latent is a potential that is not yet developed or manifest: the artist studio with its fascinating potential yet often frustrating manifestations, is perhaps the latent space by definition. For this exhibition in the Linenhall, the 20 members of Engage Art Studios are invited to propose works in their varied practices that echo this notion of potentiality not fully realised as yet.” Adm. free Official opening on Friday 2nd November at 7.30pm. All welcome.

VISUAL ART: GALLERY From Friday 30th November Emma Bourke

Emma is a visual artist working mainly in the medium of glass. Her artistic practice is inspired by the natural environment in the west of Ireland where she spent her formative years, and the wild flowers and plants that populate the countryside. Captivated by these enchanting plants, Emma creates collections of these wild flowers out of glass, eternally capturing their beauty. “The transparency of the glass is intentionally maintained in order to heighten the ambiguity of an organic ecosystem. Adding colour to some petals allows each to become characteristically unique like the environment which inspires their conception.” Emma graduated with a BDes (Hons) from NCAD. One of her Degree pieces was purchased by the National Museum of Ireland, while her Thesis Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka and their glass models of sea creatures was acquired by the Rakow Library, Corning Museum of Glass, New York as part of its Blaschka Archive. Emma received a Scholarship from the Craft Council of Ireland under the Future Makers Awards 2009. Adm. free Official opening on Friday 30th November at 7.30pm. All welcome.

VISUAL ART: FOYER Monday 10th - Saturday 29th September Captured by Song Captured by Song is a selection of some sixty images held at the National Folklore Collection. It explores the collecting work of Tom Munnelly through both his photographic collection and his field diary records. Tom was employed as a full-time song and music collector from 1971 until his death in 2007. In the course of his thirty-six year career, Tom’s recordings on reel-to-reel, digital and cassette audio tapes of folk song, music and lore make him one of the most important and fruitful collectors Ireland has seen. This exhibition represents various aspects of Tom’s life as a collector. Full-time collectors of folklore were required to keep a field diary in which they documented day-to-day events, people they met, those they recorded and where they stayed. Tom’s diary is particularly insightful, not least due to his acerbic wit, but also the warmth and honesty present in his descriptions of singers and musicians. Excerpts from his diaries are included in the exhibition, alongside images from his photographic collection. Adm. free Official opening Monday 10th September at 7.30pm, including the talk Tom Munnelly - Captured by Song by Ronan Galvin, Exhibition Curator & Lecturer in Irish Folklore. Admission free, all welcome.
