El helado es probablemente una de las mejores cosas jamás inventadas, y en verano me como uno o dos conos cada día, a cualquier hora. Los helados más sabrosos son los de San Crispino, en Via Magna Grecia, y sientan genial después de un largo día de trabajo en ‘All about Paula’, la empresa de diseño industrial que empecé con dos amigos.

Martina Berloni, 25 Trabajo como fotógrafa, pero también soy DJ aficionada y viajera apasionada. Si no estuviera arruinada, ahora mismo estaría viajando por el mundo… Mientras tanto, vivo en Pigneto, uno de los vecindarios más chulos de Roma, donde está la deliciosa Gelateria del Pigneto (Via Pesaro, 11).

Su ‘gelato’ es 100% natural, los propietarios son muy majos y sus sabores de flores, a violetas o a rosas, están muy bien. Mi combinación perfecta es té verde, pera y melón, que es lo que estoy comiendo ahora mismo.

Cristiano Tabacchi, 37 El helado y yo somos dos amantes de por vida. Un ‘gelato’ italiano es lo mejor del mundo. He viajado bastante, y el único lugar que puede competir con nosotros es Grecia. Supongo que tienes que estar en el Mediterráneo para hacer helados buenos y ligeros. Soy DJ en Coyote, un club moderno en Testaccio, y estaré trabajando todo el verano –¡cosa que significa montones de helados para mi! Adoro La Gradisca, en via Mantoca, 18. Cuando estoy solo con mi cono de limón y chocolate, entonces es cuando empiezo a relajarme de verdad.

Corinna Fusco, 21 Sabores empalagosos, como la canela o el Bailey’s, son mis favoritos. No me gustan los sabores sosos, el chocolate o la vainilla me aburren y tampoco me gusta probar las nuevas variedades de sabores que han salido últimamente, como tomate, espinacas o guisantes. Soy una diseñadora de moda en paro y amo pasar el tiempo andando por la ciudad y buscando piezas de ropa ‘vintage’ baratas que puedo re-adaptar. Y si hace mucho calor, el helado es la mejor solución.

nos cuenta a dónde llevaría a un héroe suyo Enrique Torres, copropietario de la librería Freaks en Barcelona, sale con Mark Ryden, el pintor americano “De todos los ‘hijos’ artísticos promocionados por Robert ‘papa’ Williams en su revista Juxtapoz, el aventajado es sin duda Mark Ryden; un artista que lleva mucho tiempo intoxicando con su arte la mente de sus fans (incluidos astros del cine a los que retrata en sus obras), familiares (su mujer, la pintora Marion Peck) y espectadores ocasionales.

El artista residente en California retrata a menudo -con estilo clásico pero lleno de simbolismos surrealistas- escenas dantescas con cabezas cortadas junto a imágenes de niños, sorprendentes y recargados fondos y sutilezas políticamente incorrectas (ver ilustración de niño a triciclo con traje nazi rosa).

Si Ryden visitara Barcelona, lo llevaría a sitios que le hicieran descubrir esa antigua Europa de la que él a veces parece nostálgico; sus cuadros remiten a distorsionadas épocas victorianas y francesas preguillotina. Le enseñaría las gárgolas y detalles macabros del Gótico (como esa calavera atravesada por una daga bajo un arco al lado de la Catedral). Le invitaría a una cerveza en El bosc de les Fades (Ptge.

Banca, 5) y acto seguido, visitaríamos el Museo de la Cera, que está justo al lado. Y claro está, le mostraría el arte de Gaudí: esa verja que hay detrás de la Facultad de Derecho (Av. Diagonal, 684) y el parque Güell, con sus columnas retorcidas, espacios fusionados con la naturaleza y ruidos de niños. Porque no lo olvidemos ¿qué es un parque sin el sonido de los críos jugando y alguien pintando paisajes?”

One of our heroes tells us where HE would take one of HIS heroes Enrique Torres, co-owner of the Freaks bookshop in Barcelona, takes out Mark Ryden, the American painter “Of all the artistic ‘children’ promoted by Robert ‘Papa’ Williams in his magazine Juxtapoz, the most outstanding has to be Mark Ryden, an artist who has long been intoxicating the minds of his fans (including the film stars he portrays in his work), relatives (his wife, the painter Marion Peck) and occasional viewers.

The California-based artist paints in a classical style that is full of surreal symbolism. His works are Dante-esque scenes with choppedoff heads next to images of children, with surprising and elaborate backgrounds and politically incorrect details (like his painting of a child with tricycle in a pink Nazi suit).

If Ryden was to visit Barcelona, I would take him to places where he could discover the old Europe that he seems nostalgic of; his paintings are full of distorted Victorian-age figures and pre-guillotine French ladies. I would show him the gargoyles and macabre details in the Gothic quarter (like that skull and crossbones under the arch next to the cathedral). I would invite him to a beer at the Bosc de les Fades ( Ptge.

Banca, 5) and to top it off, we would go to the adjoining Wax Museum.

Of course I would show him Gaudí’s art: those iron railings that are behind the Faculty of Law (Av. Diagonal, 684), and the Park Güell with its twisted columns, both spaces fused with nature and children’s noises.

After all, what is a park if not the sound of kids playing and someone painting landscapes?”

This is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve heard this year. The original was released last year and then Frankie put his magic to it, making it a simply blissful track.

2. Gabriella Cilmi, Sweet About Me (H. Savoury mix)

Esta canción me endulza. Adoro la conmovedora voz de Gabriella y Herbert es uno de mis productores favoritos de todos los tiempos. Su trabajo es maravillosamente orgánico. This track makes me all sweet. I love Gabriella’s soulful voice and Herbert is one of my favourite producers of all times. His work is beautiful and organic.

Me encanta el trabajo de Mutiny desde hace muchos años, eso es calidad en un tema... Instrumentos reales, contundencia en la producción, dulce energía y un toque de sentimiento latino y ya tenemos la canción perfecta para ir en barco. I love Mutiny’s work. Here is quality in a track: real instruments, great production, sweet energy, a touch of Latin feel, and voilà! We’ve got the perfect sailing track.

2. FPI Project, Everybody All Over the World

Otra canción dirigida por un piano que està en el ‘top ten’ de mi lista clásicos. Si tienes algo que te haga sentir mejor que esto puede ser que estalles de alegría. Another piano-based track that is on my top ten classics list. If you went any more feel-good than this, you could burst from happiness.

Tomas Hedberg y Tucillo cogieron un trocito de la voz original y empezaron añadiéndole un ‘scratch’ para acabar creando un tema house con la misma clase que la del sello donde fue publicado: ¡Pacha! Tomas Hedberg and Tucillo took a slice of the original vocal, but started again from scratch to create a summery house track that has as much class as the label it is on: Pacha.

Pinchar esta canción es una victoria asegurada... Un hipnótico ‘loop’ house construido a partir de un emotivo solo de cuerda. Una de las más menospreciadas aunque efectivas canciones de la historia. Now this track is a winner: a hypnotic house loop that builds into an emotive and exhilarating string solo. One of the most effective and understated tracks around... perfect for a sunny boat trip!

Una mirada a los sonidos de los principios de los noventa. El jovencísimo Surkin ha sabido recrear este sonido a la perfección. Para mi, es un tema ganador y constructivo. A look back to the sounds of the early nineties, recreated to perfection by the young Surkin. It’s uplifting and definitely a winner for me.

Un clásico hecho de nuevo. El profundo y mágico sonido de Skylark junto a la composición original dan como resultado una atractiva mezcla. A classic remade. The deep sound of Skylark with the original composition make an enticing blend.

Mi canción. Un tema de piano muy bien producido que te hace sonreír desde el interior.

Con esta canción y el viento soplando en la cubierta del barco me pondría de muy buen humor. This is my song. It’s a well-produced piano track that makes me smile on the inside. With this song playing and the wind blowing, nothing could spoil my mood.

6. Goldfish, Holdtight

La leyenda del Nu Jazz Goldfish nos trae un edificante tema que está siempre puesto en ‘repeat’ en mi iPod... ¡Estos chicos son futuras estrellas! I have this incredibly uplifting track by Nu Jazz legends Goldfish on repeat on my iPod. These guys are future superstars!

5. X-Press 2, Muzik X-press (Skylark mix)

6. M. K. & Funkagenda, The Man with the Red Face

Esta es mi canción favorita del momento. Otra revisión de un clásico perfectamente hecha para nuestros días. El tema más utilizado para la apertura del Space y la canción perfecta para terminar el paseo en barco en ‘crescendo’. This is my favourite track at the moment: another classic, remade perfectly for our times. It was the mostplayed track at the Space opening and creates the perfect crescendo for the mix.

SARAH MAIN es una de las DJ residentes de la discoteca Pacha Ibiza. Le encanta el ‘sushi’ y el color rojo y después de viajar por todo el mundo declara que su lugar favorito sigue siendo su propia cama. Nació en Sydney y su pasión por la música la llevó a encontrar su sitio entre vinilos, auriculares y platos giratorios. Cuando quiere darle cancha al silencio, Sarah relee -tumbada en la playa- Veronika decide morir, de Paulo Coelho, su novela favorita.

SARAH MAIN is a resident DJ at the Pacha Ibiza club. She loves sushi and the colour red and after having travelled the world, she declares that her favourite place on earth is still her own bed. 1999. Dir. Anthony Minghella. Starring Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Cate Blanchett “The Talented Mr. Ripley depicts a stereotyped image of Rome in the 1950s, populated by beautiful, well-dressed people riding Vespas.

While still in Naples, the two protagonists, Tom and Dickie (Matt Damon and Jude Law) perform a rousing duet in the ‘Vesuvio night club’, which is actually the Caffè Latino in Rome, a famous club in Via Monte Testaccio, 96. Similarly, the ‘Rome’ opera house, where Tom Ripley pretends to be Dickie, is actually in Naples.

Once in Rome, Ripley sojourns in a large hotel, the sumptuous Grand Hotel on Via Vittorio Emanuele Orlando, near Piazza della Repubblica, while the Piazza Navona café where Dickie’s redhaired friend (Philip Seymour Hoffman) shows up is no real café, but just a bunch of tables placed in the middle of the piazza for the scene. (This is because it’s much easier for a production to create its own ambiance than to rent an actual café for the day.)

In the film, Dickie speaks about his favourite tailor in Rome, Battistoni. Battistoni really exists: it is on via Condotti, as is the shop Ripley visits to have his wallet embossed. After Dickie’s murder, Ripley returns to Rome and rents an apartment in Piazza Gioia. The real name of the piazza is Piazza Mattei, in the Jewish Ghetto, but the interior of the apartment, which was also used as the Grand Hotel suite, is in Via Monte Giordano near Piazza Navona. Finally, the café where Ripley arranges a meeting between his three friends is Cafe Dinelli, Piazza di Spagna.”

COLLEEN es el nombre artístico de Cécile Schott, multiinstrumentista de 32 años residente en París. Ha grabado tres discos llenos de sonidos mágicos: Everyone Alive Wants Answers, The Golden Morning Breaks y Les Ondes Silencieuses, todos ellos editados por el prestigioso sello británico Leaf. Algunos de sus temas musicales suenan en Elegy, la última película de Isabel Coixet. COLLEEN is the stage name of Cécile Schott, a 32-year-old multi-instrumentalist living in Paris. She has recorded three albums full of magical sounds: Everyone Alive Wants Answers, The Golden Morning Breaks and Les Ondes Silencieuses, all of them published by the British record label Leaf. No deja de maravillarme que el sonido sea una simple vibración del aire. Hoy lo damos todo por sentado, pero confesaré que no deja de sorprenderme que los humanos hayamos desarrollado tanto la facultad de crear sonidos, hasta el punto de convertirla en un arte.

Hay sonidos que detesto profundamente.

Número 1: el despertador, porque me encanta dormir. Número 2: las obras en el patio de mi casa, en Montparnasse. Y algunos más, como la horrible música que escucha mi vecino del piso de arriba. O el politono de los móviles.

Otros sonidos me encantan. El mar, por ejemplo. Y el sonido de la lluvia. El metro de París. El paisaje sonoro que descubrí en una isla griega. El ruido de alguien que prepara el café mientras yo sigo en la cama. Mi gato, intentando roer el suelo de madera de mi casa. Y, por supuesto, la música.

A los 13 años tuve una especie de revelación.

Descubrí a los Beatles a través de la canción A Day In The Life. Cuando empezó a sonar fue como si todo se parara. Pensé que era alucinante que existiera algo que fuera capaz de producirme esa sensación estética y emocional, la más intensa que había vivido hasta entonces.

Ya en París, descubrí el ‘sampling’. Pero pronto me cansé de “robar” sonidos a los demás y quise crear sonidos orgánicos, produciéndolos con instrumentos reales y uniéndolos en bucle. Recuperé la guitarra acústica de mi adolescencia y la flauta dulce de madera que me obligaban a tocar en la escuela. Encontré un violoncelo tirado de precio y un ‘glockenspiel’. Aprendí a tocar el clarinete por mi cuenta. Y tomé clases de viola de gamba. También aprendí a tocar el carrillón y la espineta, así como instrumentos menos convencionales, como vasos de cristal llenos de agua.

Hoy vivo rodeada de sonidos. Y he descubierto que el silencio es tan importante como la música. En general, me gusta la idea de ralentizar el ritmo de las cosas. La repetición de un gesto hasta alcanzar la perfección es mucho más importante que hacer mil cosas a la vez a la mayor velocidad posible. Y los sonidos nos pueden ayudar a tomar el ritmo adecuado.

I’m still amazed that sound is a simple vibration in the air. Today we take it for granted, but I’ll confess that it still surprises me that we human beings have been able to develop such a capacity to create sounds, to the point of converting it into an art form.

There are sounds that I detest profoundly. Number 1: the alarm clock, because I love sleeping. Number 2: the construction works in the patio of my home in Montparnasse. And some others, like the horrible music my upstairs neighbour listens to. Or the polyphonic ringtones of mobile phones.

I love some other sounds. The sound of the sea, for example. Rain. The sounds of the Paris Metro. The soundscapes I discovered on a Greek island. Somebody making coffee while I’m still in bed. My cat trying to gnaw at the wooden floorboards of my flat. And music, of course.

At the age of 13 I had a revelatory experience.

I discovered the Beatles through the song A Day In The Life. It started playing, and it was as if everything stood still. I found it amazing that something could produce that strong an aesthetic and emotional sensation in me, the strongest I had experienced until then.

After moving to Paris I discovered sampling. But I soon tired of “stealing” sounds from others and wanted to create organic sounds, making them with real instruments and joining them together in a loop. I took up playing the acoustic guitar again, and the wooden flute they made me play at school. I found a dirt cheap violoncello and a glockenspiel. I taught myself to play the clarinet. And I took classes in viola da gamba. I also learned to play the xylophone and the harpsichord, as well as less conventional instruments, like glasses filled with water.

Today I live surrounded by sounds. And I have discovered that silence is just as important as music. In general, I like the idea of slowing down the pace of things. Repeating a gesture until it reaches perfection is a lot more important than doing a thousand things at once and as quickly as possible. And sounds can help us find just the right pace.

16 de Julio 16th of July Escribe Mayer Aramburu

Soledad huye de la gran ciudad en cuanto empiezan las rebajas. Su teoría es que todo se devalúa esos días. Para alejarse, elige La Valeta (Malta).

-Del 1 al 17 de julio, Mayer. Muy importante: quiero pasar allí el 16, la fiesta oficial de la ciudad. Es mi cumpleaños, eso ya lo sabes, y veintidós años exactos después, el de mi hijo. Un 16 de julio empecé mi colección, con una de las “Elegies for the Spanish Republic” de Motherwell, en memoria a mi padre, que era republicano. Motherwell murió el 16 de julio de 1991. Ese día me establecí en Barcelona. Quizá no lo recuerdes, pero te contraté un 16 de julio.

Una vez en La Valeta, es fácil entrar rápidamente en el ritmo de la ciudad. Nos hinchamos a aperitivos de alcachofas, tomates secos y alcaparras en el Cordina, bajo la mirada de los frescos de Giuseppe Cali. Visitamos el centro de arte St. James Cavalier y comemos en Palazz, una ‘trattoria’ maltesa donde acabamos compartiendo mesa con Lawrence, un escritor ‘beat’ de unos cincuenta años, elegante y profundamente aburrido.

-Esta ciudad es preciosa, pero lenta -nos explica-. Al final, uno se vuelve lento también. Ayer pasé una hora ante el Caravaggio de la catedral de San Juan, en el que decapitan a San Juan Bautista. Qué crueldad, cuánta belleza. Echo de menos un poco de actividad -dice mientras ataca el queso de cabra con pimienta.

A Soledad no se le ha escapado -tampoco a mí- que su atuendo incluye un polo Pringle, unos pantalones de pijama impecables y unas alpargatas azules. Como nos pierde la gente que viste bien (suelen tener conversaciones interesantes), le invitamos a unirse a nuestro paseo hacia el bastión de Lascaris.

-Cae lejos a pie -dice el ‘beatnik’- ¿Quieren tomar un autobús?

Con reticencia -Soledad se marea en los lugares donde se conduce por la izquierda- subimos a uno de los preciosos autobuses vintage, amarillos y naranjas.

Como cada uno es propiedad de su conductor, los asien-

tos están colocados donde les parece, y la decoración es fabulosa: quincalla dorada, ‘skay’, flores de plástico, vírgenes… Pálida por las curvas al principio, Soledad va recuperando el color. Pronto aparece en su rostro esa expresión de eureka.

-Mayer, llevas mi tarjeta de crédito, ¿verdad?

Aún no le he contestado y ya se levanta, intercambia unas palabras con el conductor, que por unos segundos parece perder un poco el control del volante, y vuelve a tomar asiento.

-Tengo la solución a tu aburrimiento y al mío, Lawrence. Vuelve a Barcelona con nosotras. Pero no en avión.

From the diary of Mayer Aramburu

Soledad escapes from the big city when the sales are on. She believes that things get out of hand during this time. To get away, she chooses to go to La Valletta, Malta.

“From the 1st to the 17th of July, Mayer. Very important: I want to be there on the 16th, the city’s official Fête. It’s my birthday, as you already know, and exactly twentytwo years later, my son was born. On the 16th of July, I started my collection, with one of Motherwell’s “Elegies for the Spanish Republic”, in memory of my father, who was a republican. Motherwell died on the 16th of July in 1991. I also moved to Barcelona on that day. You may not remember, but I agreed to employ you on the 16th of July, too.”

As soon as you arrive in La Valletta, it’s easy to get into the swing of things. We stuff ourselves on artichokes, sun-dried tomatoes and capers at the Cordina, under the Guiseppe Cali frescoes on the ceiling. We visit the St. James Cavalier Art Centre and have lunch at Palazz, a Maltese ‘trattoria’ where we end up sharing a table with Lawrence, a smart and ever so bored beatnik writer in his fifties. “This city is beautiful but slow-paced,” he explains. “In the end, one becomes rather slow one’s self.

Yesterday I spent a whole hour in front of the Caravaggio in St John’s Cathedral, which depicts the decapitation of St John the Baptist. What cruelty and yet what beauty. I miss a bit of action,” he says whilst digging into his goat’s cheese and pepper. Soledad and I can’t help but notice he is wearing a Pringle polo shirt, impeccable pyjama bottoms and blue espadrilles. As we love his get-up, and his interesting conversation, we invite him to join us on our walk towards the Lascaris Bastion.

“It’s quite far on foot,” says the beatnik. “Do you want to take the bus?”

Reticently – Soledad gets car-sick in places that drive on the left – we get on one of those gorgeous yellow-and-orange vintage buses. As they are all privately owned by the drivers themselves, the seats are placed

wherever they want them to be, and are fabulously decorated: gold trinkets, plastic flowers, virgins… Pale from the sharp turns at first, Soledad starts to get her colour back. A triumphant ‘Eureka’ expression forms on her face. “Mayer, you’ve got my credit card, haven’t you?”

No sooner had I opened my mouth to retort than she was up out of her seat and talking to the driver, who seemed to momentarily lose control of the steering wheel. She sat down again and said, “I have the solution to your boredom, as well as mine, Lawrence. Come to Barcelona with us! But not by plane. I have just bought this bus for €40,000. Picture it, Mayer: you and me driving through Spain, just like Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters”.

ON THE METRO You can feel the underground entrance, like a big hole. Once downstairs, pay attention to the announcements and beeping signals.

Usually there are bumps on the ground that mark the way to the exit.

HOW TO CROSS THE STREET Listen to the sounds of the traffic lights (in cities that have beeping signals). Otherwise, listen to the sound of the cars. If the cars on the perpendicular street are passing that means you can, too. Pay attention to the different bumps in the paving; they will help you distinguish between the road and the pavement. (And only do this accompanied by a friend.)

ORIENTATION ~Hearing is the sense that allows you to orientate yourself and recreate a picture of the space around you. Blind people develop a ‘sense of obstacles’. It is possible to sense an obstacle by listening and feeling how close you are to it, because the air doesn’t go past it. ~Substitute sight for mental maps. Any reference is good: a bin, a news stand… ~Try walking around an urban space that is adapted to the blind, with ramps on the pavements and wide streets, and where the lamp posts are all situated on the same side of the street, so you can form an automatic picture in your

Don’t be scared; let go. You can start with easy things, like walking along the seafront.

Si los de la calle perpendicular pasan, significa que tú también puedes pasar. Fíjate en las distintas rugosidades del pavimento. Te ayudará a distinguir la carretera de las aceras.

Es la hora de cenar, y a mi nariz llegan los aromas de ajo de las cocinas de los restaurantes.”

1 Twenty past one in the morning. Eugenio’s bar, Entrecalles, is full of the smell of tobacco and caipirinha limes.

You can hear Amaral playing faintly in the background and the sound of darts being thrown towards an elusive bull’s eye. Below the bar’s stairwell, Eugenio starts up his Vespa. The sound is unmistakable.

1 Una y veinte de la madrugada. El bar de Eugenio, Entrecalles, huele a tabaco y a limón de caipiriña. Suena Amaral, muy bajito, y los dardos que unos chicos tiran a diana. Bajo el escalón del local y Eugenio arranca su vespa. El sonido es inconfundible.

2 Comienzo a caminar y siento los adoquines de Santa Cruz bajo mis pies. Es un suelo tan irregular como histórico; pero como llevo zapatos de trote camino segura -más de lo que hubiera imaginado. Nacho, mi compañero, me lleva de la mano.

2 I start to walk and I hear the cobblestones of Santa Cruz under my feet. It’s such an uneven surface but so full of history. Luckily I’m wearing decent shoes; I’m walking more steadily than I would have thought. Nacho, my mate, is holding my hand.

8 Estoy llegando a Alfonso XII, cerca de mi casa. Paso la mano por la pared: noto la cal vieja y rugosa y la madera de dos iglesias. 3 La una y media. Suenan dos campanadas de la Giralda, finas y discretas. Alguien está baldeando la plaza Virgen de los Reyes. Siento como sale con fuerza la presión del agua. El suelo cambia y ahora piso piedrecitas más pequeñas. Pasa una bici y alguien andando con chanclas –ya se acerca el calor.

3 Half past one. The bells of the Giralda chime discretely and delicately. Someone is spraying down the Virgen de los Reyes square. I can hear how the water is spurting out under pressure of the hose. The ground changes and I can feel I am stepping on smaller stones. A bicycle passes and then a person wearing flip-flops – as the weather is getting warmer.

4 Camino hacia la Catedral y me detengo. Toco una de las columnas que la rodean. El mármol está caliente, y contrasta con el frío de las cadenas que protegen al monumento. Al final de la calle Alemanes, que huele a azahar, hay un taxista, parado, escuchando el fútbol en la radio.

4 I walk towards the cathedral and stop for a bit. I touch one of the surrounding columns. The marble is warm, and contrasts with the cold chains that protect the monument.

At the end of Alemanes street, which smells of orange blossom, there is a taxi parked. The driver is listening to the football on the radio.

5 Salgo a la Avenida de la Constitución y siento las farolas como un fogonazo de flash en mi cara. A esta hora el tranvía duerme y estoy a punto de hacer un gran descubrimiento. Al lado derecho de la vía, hay unas incrustaciones de acero en el suelo para que los invidentes sepan que si la pisan están cerca del tranvía. La sensación es la misma que cuando vas en coche y pisas una zona que no debes. Y cada círculo está justo a la distancia de un paso, es curioso.

5 I leave the Avenida de la Constitución and I can feel the street lamps shining down like blazing suns on my face. At this time of night the trams aren’t running and I’m about to make a great discovery. To the right of the tramways, there are some markings in the steel so that the blind know that they are nearing the tramway. Each circle on the ground is exactly one step apart, it’s amazing.

6 Al llegar al Ayuntamiento escucho un ‘clack-clack’ de herramientas.

Nacho me dice que son dos encargados del mantenimiento del tranvía. Sigo y toco una catenaria, la abrazo -es más ancha que mis brazos.

6 When I get to the town hall I can hear the ‘click-clack’ of tools. Nacho tells me that there are two maintenance people working on the tramway. I continue and come across one of the tram’s electricity posts, the diameter of which is much wider than my arms can hug.

7 Ya en la plaza de la Magdalena, meto la mano en la fuente, pese a que Nacho me dice que el agua está verde. ¡Qué fría! Sigo. La callecita está mojada, huele a campo y a humedad.

UN a jugar OLOR A sevilla

1 On the back of the scooter, I can feel the light in the air. Lisbon is a warm and sinuous city. There is a permanent breeze; it comes from the Tagus River and the Atlantic Ocean, which meet in Lisbon.

1 En la parte de atrás de una moto, puedo notar el calor en el aire contra mi piel. Lisboa es una ciudad cálida y sinuosa. Hay una brisa permanente; viene del río Tagus y el océano Atlántico, que se encuentran en Lisboa.

5 Nos dirijimos hacia la Praça da Figueira. Oigo el ruido de los coches y la gente que pasa. Pedimos un licor de cereza en uno de los bares en la esquina de la plaza. El sabor es intenso y dulce; deja un sabor exótico en mi boca, que une Lisboa con sus antiguas colonias.

5 We go on to Praça da Figueira. I hear the sounds of cars and people passing by. We have cherry liquor in one of the bars on the corner of the square. The taste is intense and sweet; it leaves an exotic flavour in my mouth, linking Lisbon to its former overseas colonies.

6 Bajamos de la Vespa y caminamos por los estrechos callejones de Alfama. Siento los irregulares cubos de granito, la ‘Calçada Portuguesa’, debajo de mis pies y tengo que ir con cuidado para no tropezar. Los vecinos intercambian cotilleos desde las ventanas. El aire está impregnado de olor a pez y a sardinas a la parrilla; pero son los sonidos los que me hipnotizan. Las voces femeninas y la música de guitarra del fado, de muchos fados diferentes: alegres, satíricos, tristes o marchosos.

Neighbours exchange gossip from one window to another. The air is impregnated with the smell of fish, grilled sardines – it’s summer already! But in Alfama, it’s the sounds that hypnotise me. The female voices and guitar music of the fado, of many different fados: happy, satirical, sad or lively. We decide to end our tour at the fado restaurant Casa de Linhares at Beco dos Armazéns de Linho 1 and have some sardines.

In front of the Zé dos Bois gallery on Rua da Barroca 59 I hear African music; I can’t see it, but I know that the place is packed with people from the artistic underground scene.

Al ritmo de la caja registradora “La música funciona como el aire acondicionado: es un parámetro ambiental y su primer objetivo es que su efecto pase desapercibido”, dice Marta García Quiñones, quien lleva años estudiando los efectos de las melodías ambientales reproducidas, la llamada música “funcional”. Su creador, George Owen Squier, tuvo la idea de transmitirla mediante cable telefónico y así, fundó Muzak, que comenzó a prestar servicio masivo a mediados de los años 40, cuando con la fiebre del consumismo había que marcar el ritmo de la caja registradora. ¿Cómo? Modelando la “curva de estímulo”: ritmos, variaciones y silencios que pautaban el consumo diario. “La misma teoría se aplica hoy: el objetivo es que la gente permanezca, beba, coma o compre más”, explica Marta.

IT ALL BEGAN To the rhythm of the till “This type of music is similar to air conditioning: it’s ambient. Its main objective is that its effects go unnoticed,” says Marta García Quiñones, who has been studying the effects of this ‘functional’ music for years.It all began in 1922, when a US Army officer called George Owen Squier had the idea to transmit music over a telephone cable.

His company, Muzak, started to offer mass piped-music services to businesses. It caught the spirit of the mid-40s, when the consumerist fever began and the rhythm of the cash register demanded a faster beat. How? By creating what was known as the ‘stimulus curve’: a series of rhythms, variations and silences that influenced consumer behaviour. “The early findings from experimental psychology were limited,” explains García Quiñones. “Nevertheless, these findings hold true today; and the aim is that people stay, drink, eat or buy more.”

Misterios del punto M Sólo hace falta entrar a El Corte Inglés para comprobar que en cada sección suena una música distinta: Frank Sinatra en caballeros, guitarras estridentes en deportes o melodías relajantes en muebles. “Hay compras que exigen una decisión meditada y otras que son impulsivas.

A cada momento le corresponde una música”, dice Marta, y apunta que estos efectos se detectan mediante mediciones de audiencia.

Los resultados, usados regularmente por emisoras de radio, también sirven para captar tendencias a las empresas de música ambiental: “La música programada siempre opera a partir de la certeza de que una canción ya es familiar para la gente”, explica el músico y teórico de la misma Jonathan Sterne. Es decir, que programar música significa jugar con la memoria emotiva -el punto M-, como lo puede hacer un cartel publicitario o un galán de barrio con perfume dulzón. Así el gusto musical, es un dato potente que puede validar el dicho “dime qué escuchas y te convenceré de lo que sea”.

WHAT MUSIC, AND WHY? Go to any department store and you will hear that each section has its own music playing. The programming depends on the type of shopper in each section and the kind of purchase he might make. According to García Quiñones, “There are certain purchases that require a meditated decision” – calming music – “while other buys are more impulsive” – faster beats. You might hear Frank Sinatra in the men’s clothing section, strident rock guitars in the sport section, and relaxing music in the furniture section.

Behind the selection of these songs is a pile of market research: radio audience surveys provide the first clue to what songs will strike a chord with shoppers. “Ambient music providers always always work with the premise that a song must already be familiar to the public,” explains the musician and music theorist Jonathan Sterne. Thus, programming music means playing with the emotional memory (the M point) just like an image or a smell might do. In that sense, musical taste is valuable information to have about your customers. Tell me what you listen to, and I’ll tell you what to buy.

They have been in the market for 35 years, they have contracts with all the big music labels, and they offer a selection of two million songs to warehouses, clinics, hospitals, and clothes shops. “Our challenge is to find the perfect melody for any environment,” says Isaac Lahoza, coordinator of the musicology team at Hilo Musical. Like a true cool-hunter, Lahoza sniffs out new trends and catalogues and typifies them. “If a client wants to communicate youth, sophistication and design, a while ago we would have recommended chill-out music. But now alternative rock has made a big come-back and the trends have changed,” explains Lahoza, with the tone and confidence of an expert ‘taster’ who knows exactly what chord to strike to make a woman fall in love, just like John Cusack in the film High Fidelity.

SEARCHING FOR IDENTITY “We don’t buy products these days, we buy emotions.” So said the Spanish sociologist Vicente Verdú when talking about how a brand of jeans could suggest a lifestyle and particular taste in music. In well-known high street clothes shops like Bershka or Desigual, the association is evident: electronic music pumps away, chosen not by an ambient music company but by the owners themselves. Chains like Victoria’s Secret produce their own music and sell it, while Starbucks plays to the upscale atmosphere in its coffee shops by selling CDs of vanguard and sophisticated music. The conclusion is simple: nothing else creates an identity the way music does.

Clásicos para repeler Para ahuyentar gamberros, en Inglaterra inauguraron un sistema de ultrasonido que resulta insoportable a menores de 25 años. Un artilugio similar existe en EE UU desde 1990, pero utilizando la música con intención comercial. Dueños de grandes tiendas descubrieron que la música clásica era en muchos casos el antídoto para repeler vagabundos y adolescentes: Mozart, Wagner o Beethoven los mantenían alejados, al mismo tiempo que atraían a otro tipo de clientes. La experiencia fue un éxito –para los dueños- y sirve para advertir que en algunos lugares la música clásica puede ser un arma de doble filo; como en los trenes que atraviesan Barcelona, ambientados con melodías de Wagner. “Es el paradigma del público cautivo -dice Marta García Quiñones- porque la música clásica es un bien universal y si no te gusta dirán que el problema no es de RENFE sino tuyo, por inculto”.

To the same end, US businesses are using a similar albeit less drastic method: owners of large stores discovered that playing classical music was in fact a perfect way to keep tramps and teens away, while attracting other, more desirable customers. The system was a success – for the owners – and has meant that classical music has become a useful double-whammy weapon, used also on public transport. “It’s the paradigm of the captive audience,” says García Quiñones. “Classical music is a good universal choice and if you don’t like it, they’ll say that it’s not the programmer’s problem but yours, for being ignorant.”

The power of the DJ Mozart hated his audiences for one simple reason: when his music was playing, everyone talked or sometimes even ate. It drove him mad, even though in the 18th century Mozart was a ‘servant’ and opera was meant as background music at a social occasion, just as a bolero or a St. Germain track are today. “Music has always been functional,” says the musicologist Isaac Lahoza, “so anyone who underestimates the power of music or the DJ should remember that Charlemagne had to unite all the different styles of Gregorian chants so that he could later unite the Empire.”

Paolo Selis ha estado caminando descalzo desde el año 2002. Miembro de Nati Scalzi, una asociación italiana que anima a la gente a deshacerse de sus zapatos, dice que desde entonces no ha tenido ni un resfriado. “Caminar descalzo mejora el sistema inmunológico y la postura, que es buena para la espalda”, afirma. Juan Bertrand, un partidario de ir descalzo que vive en Cataluña, está de acuerdo.

FEET UNCOVERED When was the last time you walked barefoot outside your home? Maybe it’s time to try it out

Paolo Selis has been walking barefoot since the year 2002. A member of Nati Scalzi, an Italian association that encourages people to ditch their shoes, he says he hasn’t had a cold since. “Walking barefoot improves the immune system and the posture, which is good for the back,” he claims. Juan Bertrand, an adherent to barefoot living from Catalonia, concurs. “No back problems; no colds.”

The barefoot movement has been gaining strength in Europe and the USA since the 1990s. Adherents wear shoes as little as possible, because of the sensorial experience and the health benefits. They go barefoot at home, in the countryside and in the city. And from a legal point of view, nobody can stop them. “Walking around the city barefoot is like having a third eye,” says Paolo. “Everything you see, you also feel with your feet.”

restaurantes apta para todos los públicos, abierta, sin complejos, donde el elitismo y las falsas pretensiones brillaran por su ausencia. Hace seis años, poco después de cumplir los treinta, lo consiguió. Este joven crítico culinario francés fundó el proyecto Fooding, una guía que parece la antítesis de la famosa Michelin.

En ella encontramos un poco de todo: desde lujosos restaurantes de los barrios parisinos más exclusivos a cantinas de ambiente universitario o pequeños puestos de ‘kebab’ a precios irrisorios.

“Fooding es la contracción de comida y de ‘feeling’. Quería encontrar una nueva manera de acercarnos a la gastronomía y al buen vivir, a través de la libertad y la diversión”, explica desde París. Cammas, que en su día trabajó para la prestigiosa guía Gault & Millau y para el diario Libération, impone tres reglas a su equipo de especialistas para evaluar un nuevo restaurante: 1) No presentarse nunca como crítico, 2) Pagar siempre su propia cuenta, y 3) Incluir el lugar en la guía sólo si al marcharse le han entrado ganas de volver una segunda vez. ¿Qué factores cuentan para valorar un restaurante? Todos y cada uno de ellos: el precio, el tiempo de espera, los olores, la acogida y la sonrisa de los camareros. Pero también la sinceridad de la propuesta. “Valoramos los restaurantes por el ‘feeling’ que desprenden, casi como las personas. Lo más importante es que sea honesto, que no se haga pasar por otro. La autenticidad del lugar es lo que más cuenta”.

This young French culinary critic founded Fooding, a guide that was to be the antithesis of the famous Michelin. In it, you will find a bit of everything, from luxurious and exclusive Parisian restaurants to university canteens and insanely cheap kebab stalls.

“Fooding is the contraction of ‘food’ and ‘feeling’. I wanted to find a new way of bringing gastronomy and good living closer to people in a free and fun way,” he explains from Paris. Cammas, who back in the day worked for the prestigious Gault & Millau guides and for the newspaper Libération, gives his team of specialists three rules of how to evaluate a restaurant: 1) Never introduce yourself as a critic. 2) Always pay your own bill. 3) Only ever include the restaurant in the guide if, when you leave, you already want to go back a second time.

What factors does he consider when evaluating a restaurant?

Each and every factor: the price, the waiting time, the smells, the welcome and the waiter’s smiles. But also whether the place is authentic or not. “We value restaurants on their vibe or ‘feeling’, just as you would a person. The most important thing is to be honest, and this is high up on the priority list. Authenticity is what counts most.”

Falso. Como decía antes, lo más importante es que haya ‘feeling’, que te entren ganas de volver. La comida puede ser extraordinaria y la decoración magnífica, pero si falla ese factor indefinible no hay nada que hacer.

También falso. Se trata de un simple automatismo. De entrada habría que saber apreciar las sutilezas de cada vino para poderlos combinar con cada tipo de carne y de pescado. No es ningún sacrilegio experimentar y hacer lo contrario. Por ejemplo, si vamos a comer un filete de atún será mil veces mejor escoger un tinto ligero que cualquier vino blanco. Yo elegiría un Val de Loire, servido ligeramente frío.

Also false. Yes, it’s the kind of decision you make automatically. First of all, you’d have to learn how to appreciate the subtleties of each wine in order to be able to combine them with each type of meat or fish. It’s by no means a sacrilege to experiment and go against this usual rule. For example, if you’re going to eat a tuna fillet, you’d be far better off choosing a light red than a white. I’d choose a Val de Loire, served slightly chilled.

It’s an easy way to classify food, though it over-simplifies the infinite variety of flavours. I don’t often think in terms of these classifications when I analyse what I am eating. And of course, you’d have to add a fifth flavour: the ‘umami’, discovered at the beginning of the 20th century by a Japanese, a type of great harmony of flavours that you find in parmesan cheese, Serrano ham and some types of algae.

It’s true, it is very balanced, like all Mediterranean gastronomy. But the most important factor is not its balance, but the fact that you can see all the ingredients on the plate. It’s simple, legible and pleasant. It’s easy, practical and cheap. The simple combination of pasta, tomato and basil is all you need to create a magnificent dish. In France, you have to spend all day cooking to come up with something similar.

Igual que la literatura es un arte en función de quien la escriba, con la cocina pasa lo mismo. La diferencia es que el resto de artes se quedan allí para el resto de los tiempos, mientras que la cocina se traga y desaparece. Los grandes chefs mueren y sus obras se consumen, así que resulta difícil darle un valor a largo plazo.

I don’t know what to say. The same way that literature is an art depending on who writes it, food is too. The difference is that the other arts stay put for all time, while cooking is spontaneous, immediate, eaten, swallowed and it’s gone. Top chefs die and their works of art are consumed, so it’s hard to judge them in the long term.

This is a cliché promoted by French chefs themselves. Thanks to the past French Empire, the variety of home-produced ingredients and the legend of great chefs , there is a long tradition of excellence. Yet this can be quite unfortunate: young chefs have more difficulty in breaking away from this tradition than in countries like Britain or Spain. For example, fusion cooking and molecular cuisine are novelties that are completely lost on France. In any case, I’m not a fan of modernity at any cost.

Amor de barrio

Fátima Ibáñez, 30 - Miscelänea Guàrdia, 10 Entre locutorios, carnicerías musulmanas y locales nocturnos, Fátima y dos amigos crearon un local donde aunar ocio (tienen una zona de bar que podría ser el salón de tu casa; por la decoración, la cerveza barata y el ambiente relajado) con diferentes disciplinas artísticas. Miscelänea tiene en su archivo de eventos desde poesía a talleres de Linux, poniendo el punto de mira en el arte callejero, la ilustración y la electrónica experimental. Fátima no ve la galería como un negocio, sino que lo hace porque le apasiona y eso se nota, sobretodo en el buen rollo.

Among the Raval’s cyber-cafés, Halal butcher shops and bars, Fátima and two friends opened a place where they could combine leisure (they have a bar that could be your living room, it’s so cosy, cheap and relaxed) with different artistic disciplines. Miscelänea’s programme ranges from poetry recitals to Linux workshops, with a special focus on street art, illustration and experimental electronic music. Fátima doesn’t regard the gallery as a business but as a project of love, and, as with any love child, you can tell.

Sergi Bueno, 32 - NIU Almogàvers, 208 Hijo y amante del barrio industrial de Poble Nou, cuando decidió montar el espacio artístico NIU, Sergi lo ubicó en una de sus arterias principales. NIU combina la zona de trabajo de artistas con exposiciones, talleres y conciertos y un servicio de agencia de artistas; todo muy vinculado al arte digital.

Periodista de profesión, Sergi nunca tuvo una voluntad artística personal, sino que su inquietud viene del punto de vista periodístico de ‘voyeur’, que le permite tener una mirada más amplia para traer a Barcelona una excelente programación de artistas del subterráneo internacional.

A son and lover of the industrial Poble Nou area, Sergi decided to open his NIU art space right in the middle of it. Here you can find exhibitions, workshops, concerts and an artistic agency – and all of it closely related to the digital arts. A journalist by profession, Sergi has never felt an artistic urge himself; rather, his interest is voyeuristic. This allows him to observe things from afar and bring an excellent range of artists from the international underground scene to Barcelona.

Lolo, 31 - Fashion Dogs Francisco Giner, 15 Lolo –artista inquieto y conocido graffitero condal- dice que si no fuera galerista, ahora quizás sería paleta.

“Soy de clase obrera” afirma. Pero en 2006 montó -junto a Óscar y Toni- la galería Fashion Dogs, en lo que tiempo atrás era una peluquería canina, con la intención de aportar aire fresco a la ciudad y convertir el espacio en una “casa-oficina” donde los artistas pudieran vivir, intercambiar y producir.

Así que instalaron una cama, y ya son varios los que allí han dormido. Su criterio: la autenticidad; no importan etiquetas ni fama.

Lolo, a graffiti artist as restless as he is well-known, says that if he weren’t a gallery owner, he’d probably be a construction worker. “I’m from the working class,” he affirms. But in 2006 he and two friends decided to bring some fresh air to the city by opening Fashion Dogs, a space that they converted from a dog-grooming salon into a gallery, workshop and home for artists. Many a young creative soul has occupied the bunk bed set up in one corner of the workshop. Lolo’s criterion: authenticity. Neither labels nor fame matter.

Andrea Gómez, 31 - TodoJunto Sant Pere Mitjà, 70 bajos Si puedes comprar un Miró para poner encima de tu mesita de noche, créeme, eres un afortunado. Para el resto de mortales, la colombiana Andrea Gómez montó Todojunto; una galería que hace más asequibles los trabajos creativos vendiéndolos a precios muy bajos (desde 1 euro). La democratización del arte. Además de ser un puente entre Barcelona y Colombia, también funciona como tienda de libros, CD’s, fanzines y artículos y como oficina de Andrea, que aparte de actuar como filtro artístico, trabaja como diseñadora y artista –ahora centrándose en el dibujo y la pintura de pequeño formato.

Not many people can buy a Miró to put on their bedside table. That’s why Andrea Gómez from Colombia launched Todojunto, a gallery dedicated to the democratisation of art, where she offers works at a very low price (starting at €1). Besides being a bridge between Barcelona and Colombia, Todojunto also doubles as a shop for books, CDs and fanzines. It also functions as an office for Andrea, who, apart from acting as an artistic filter, is a designer and artist herself.

Alicia Rosselló, 24 - Duduá Rossic, 6 Esta chica ha conseguido algo que poca gente logra: hacer en su trabajo aquello que realmente le da la gana. Un día de 2006 Alicia creó su propio país de las maravillas en clave de “hazlo tú mismo”: una tienda-galería con manualidades y objetos artesanales por doquier. El lugar elegido fue una escondida callejuela del Borne, donde puedes encontrar desde un concurso de pasteles a conciertos, talleres de ganchillo, exposiciones, bolsos serigrafiados o jerséis pixelados cosidos por una abuela del barrio. 100% ‘craft’.

This girl has managed to achieve something that few people ever do: she has a job that she loves. One day in 2006, Alicia created her own wonderland, DIY-style: a gallery and shop for crafts and handmade objects. Located in a hidden backstreet in the Borne area, Duduá is where Alicia organises cake competitions, concerts, knitting workshops and exhibitions, while selling printed-fabric bags or pixelled jumpers made by local grandmothers.

Plus belle la ville Ya sea levantando barricadas o acogiendo artistas, la gente del barrio parisino de Belleville está acostumbrada a luchar. ¿Pero durará?

Whether manning the barricades or sheltering artists, the people of the Parisian neighbourhood Belleville have made a habit of pushing against the powers that be. But for how much longer?

Madeleine hurga en su bolso, saca un cigarrillo de una pitillera abollada y lo enciende con una cerilla. Se está recuperando del ascenso de 100 metros hasta la cima de la colina del Parque de Belleville. “Vengo aquí muchas veces,” afirma, casi sin aliento. “Me ayuda a mantenerme en forma.” Es difícil saber si está bromeando: es una mujer entrada en años, proporcionada como una muñeca Daruma japonesa y tiene una cara profundamente marcada, con un ojo que apenas se abre y una pícara sonrisa permanente.

Una de las razones por las cuales la gente se anima a subir hasta aquí es la asombrosa vista de la ciudad: los monumentos de París parece que estén llamando la atención como si de escolares ansiosos de responder una pregunta se trataran. Se cree que Belleville –traducido literalmente como “pueblo bonito”- es una adaptación de “Belle Vue”; unas vistas muy familiares para Madeleine. Nació en el vecino barrio de Menilmontant y creció en Belleville. “Esto siempre fue una comunidad de clase trabajadora, para inmigrantes. Su procedencia ha cambiado; cuando era niña vivían aquí españoles y argelinos, ahora viven chinos y africanos. Pero Belleville, en el fondo, no ha cambiado nada.” Madeleine tiene una vaga idea de lo que realmente define a esta inmutable Belleville. Sin embargo, a lo que ella se refiere es a la solidaridad que reina entre sus residentes, sea cual sea su procedencia.

La historia del barrio va unida a sus vistas. Fue en la rue Ramponeau donde cayó la barricada final de la Comuna de París después de una intensa y sangrienta batalla (el gobierno anarco-socialista administró la ciudad durante tres meses en 1871). Todavía hoy se encuentran en esta empinada calle signos de la resistencia a la autoridad establecida: de la escuela primaria del barrio cuelga una pan-

carta que demanda un aumento de protección para ‘les sans papiers’, inmigrantes ilegales sin derecho a trabajar en Francia.

Más abajo, en el número 23, un gran mural domina lo que a primera vista parece ser un solar abandonado, pero que en realidad es la entrada a La Forge, un complejo de talleres de artistas que tomó vida en 1991 como una casa ‘okupada’ en una herrería abandonada que fue reconstruida a principios del presente siglo, cuando se les dio a los artistas un permiso oficial para que pudieran habitarla. El complejo acoge a unos veinte artistas, algunos en estudios individuales, otros compartiendo espacio en “la fábrica”. Uno de los artistas que lleva viviendo ahí desde los inicios es Pero Nikcevic, un emigrante de Montenegro. Como en todo buen taller, él afirma que “La Forge es una colmena y los artistas son las abejas. Un lugar como éste puede estar vacío durante años, abandonado y sin nada especial, pero en algún momento un aura increíble penetra en él y si el clima es el adecuado, se queda y hace que se convierta en un hervidero de creatividad.”

Su actitud es bastante etérea, combinando el habla suave y afable de un profesor de universidad con la indiferencia de la mirada perdida de un fakir. Como artista, desea “destronar a Picasso” –pintor que le dejó una profunda impresión. “Picasso tenía un espíritu indestructible, pero también entendió que debes merecerte un espíritu como ese. A veces se me aparece ese gran espíritu, pero me esfuerzo constantemente para convencerme de que realmente me lo merezco.”

Aunque el método de trabajo de Nikcevic es hermético por naturaleza, después de diecisiete años en La Forge ha acabado conociendo bien el barrio y las gentes que allí habitan. “Belleville está cambiando” –afirma. “¿Pero está cambiando para bien? Eso espero. A veces se dan confrontaciones entre las diferentes comunidades, pero eso es normal, incluso sano, en un lugar como éste. Es como un gran mosaico, muy pintoresco.”

Al girar la esquina, la rue Dénoyez aparece como un bullicioso recodo de vida. En un restaurante situado en el cruce de la rue Ramponeau y la rue Belleville se está celebrando con gran algarabía una boda judía. Allí mismo, un artista de grafiti, Julien, -o So-Sa, seudónimo con el que firma- se encuentra manos a la obra. Sus diseños son fácilmente reconocibles en las paredes del barrio, acercándose más a los murales aztecas que a los grafitis tradicionales.

“Mi estilo no es nada clásico,” afirma con aire frenético. “Mi trabajo no tiene mucho que ver con el mundo del grafiti. Prefiero dibujar animales, bestias mitológicas, minotauros. Tiendo a pintar cosas que hagan pensar a la gente.” Llegó a Belleville por accidente, tropezándose un día con la rue Dénoyez y poco a poco llegando a conocer a todos los ‘grafiteros’ y artistas que ‘okupaban’ los locales.

“Es una zona muy tolerante, donde la policía no te molesta. Existen aquí asociaciones que trabajan con niños para evitar que vaguen por las calles gamberreando y además organizan talleres de grafiti. El mundo del grafiti es normalmente muy egocéntrico, y, si pasas demasiado tiempo inmerso en él te puedes convertir en un amargado. Sin embargo, en un lugar como éste, los niños pueden relajarse, hablar con la gente y pintar –más o menos- lo que les salga del alma. Es un buen ambiente.”

La pared que está decorando So-Sa pertenece al Café Aux Folies, que se encuentra en la intersección entre el barrio artístico y uno de los dos Chinatowns de París. El panorama de la terraza (desde la ley antitabaco el interior está vacío) es un claro reflejo de cómo interactúan las diferentes comunidades de Belleville. No hay mucha relación intercultural –los artistas, los chinos y los “Bellevilloises” de toda la

vida rara vez comparten mesa -pero existe comunicación, reconocimiento y cordialidad.

Cuando cae la tarde, otro de los grupos, el más nuevo del barrio, comienza a hacerse notar. Les guste o no les guste, les llaman “BoBo” (léase: ‘Bourgeois-Bohemian’). Son más un fenómeno social que una comunidad heterogénea: jóvenes profesionales liberales que se han visto forzados a mudarse a barrios menos salubres debido al aumento desorbitado de los precios de los alquileres en la ciudad. Madeleine se muestra tolerante con sus nuevos vecinos: “Parecen amables y además son limpios” afirma con su enigmática sonrisa. “Y sus hijos son muy educados. Pero hay un problema: tienen dinero, y cuando viene gente con dinero suben los precios.” Hace una pausa y dirige su vista por encima de las copas de los árboles hacia esos edificios que la han visto crecer. “Belleville ha resistido siempre a los cambios… pero el dinero puede llegar a arruinarlo todo.”

Madeleine fishes a cigarette from a battered tin and lights it with a match. She is recovering from the arduous climb to the 100-metre summit of the Parc de Belleville. “I come up here most days,” she says, breathlessly. “It helps keep me in shape.” It’s difficult to know if she is joking; she is advanced in years, proportioned like a Japanese Daruma doll, and her heavily etched face, one eye of which barely opens, seems forever fixed in an insubordinate grin.

One reason anyone might want to hike up here is for the staggering view of the city to be had: Paris’s monuments jostling for attention like school children eager to answer a question. It is believed that Belleville – literally “beautiful town” – is really a corruption of Belle Vue. It is a view that Madeleine has known most of her life. She was born in the adjacent neighbourhood of Menilmontant and raised in Belleville. “This was always a working-class community, and a community for immigrants. Where the immigrants come from has changed; when I was a girl it was the Spanish, then the Algerians, now it’s the Chinese and the Africans. But Belleville itself doesn’t change, not deep down.” What exactly defines this immutable Belleville, Madeleine is vague about; she does, however, allude to a certain solidarity between its residents, whatever their origin.

The neighbourhood’s history bears out this view. It was in rue Ramponeau that the final barricade of the Paris Commune (the Anarcho-socialist government that administered Paris for three months in 1871) fell, amid intense and bloody fighting. Even today this sharply sloping street shows signs of resistance to the established authority: The local primary school displays a banner demanding increased protection for ‘les sans papiers’, immigrants with no legal right to work in France.

Further down, at number 23, a huge mural dominates one wall of what at first appears to be a vacant lot but which is, in fact, the entrance to La Forge, a complex of artists’ studios that started life in 1991 as a squat in an abandoned smithy and was rebuilt at the start of this century when the artists were given official permission to stay.

The complex houses about twenty artists, some in individual studios, others sharing space in the “factory”. One who has been there since the early days is Pero Nikcevic, an émigré from Montenegro. Like any good workshop, he says, “La Forge is a beehive, and the artists are the bees. A place like this can stand empty for years, unremarkable like an abandoned hive, but then an awesome spirit enters and if the climate is right, it will stay and things will be created.”

EXPERIENCIAS His manner is rather ethereal, combining the soft-spoken affability of a college professor with the crystal-eyed detachment of a fakir. As an artist, he hopes to “dethrone Picasso” – a painter who clearly made a formidable impression on the young Nikcevic.

“Picasso had an indestructible spirit, but he also understood that you have to deserve a spirit like that. I am sometimes visited by this great spirit, but it’s a constant effort for me to make sure I deserve it.”

While Nikcevic’s working method is naturally hermetic, after seventeen years at La Forge he has come to know the area and its people well. “Belleville is changing.” he reflects. “Is it changing for the better? I hope so. There can sometimes be confrontation between the different communities, but that’s normal, healthy even, in a place like this. It’s like a grand mosaic, very picturesque.”

Around the corner, rue Dénoyez is heaving with life. Where it joins rue Ramponeau, a raucous wedding celebration is under way in a Jewish restaurant. Where the road meets rue de Belleville, a graffiti artist, Julien – or So-Sa, as he tags his paintings – is at work.

His designs are easily recognisable on local walls, drawing more from Aztec murals than traditional graffiti styles.

“My style isn’t classic,” he says, his frenetic air infiltrating his speech, which races along in pulsing staccato. “My work doesn’t have much to do with the world of graf. I prefer to do animals, mythical beasts, minotaurs. I try to do things that make people think.” He arrived in Belleville by accident, stumbling upon rue Dénoyez one day, and gradually got to know the other ‘graffers’ and the artists occupying the squats.

“It’s a very tolerant area, where the police don’t bother you.

There are associations here that work with the kids, encourage them not to vandalise things all over the city, and organise graffiti workshops. The world of graffiti is normally very ego-centric, and if you spend too long in that environment you can become an angry person. In a place like this though, the kids can relax, speak with people, be authorised – kind of – to paint what’s in their heads. It’s a good ambiance.”

The wall So-Sa is decorating belongs to the Café Aux Folies, which stands on the intersection of the artistic quarter and one of Paris’s two Chinatowns. The scene on the terrace (the interior is desolate because of the smoking ban) seems to parallel how the different communities of Belleville interact. There isn’t much crosspollination – the artists, the Chinese and the old ‘Bellevilloise’ generally stick to their own tables – but there is communication, recognition, warmth.

As evening descends, another group, the newest in town, make their presence felt. Lumped together, with varying degrees of affection, under the moniker “BoBo” (read: Bourgeois-Bohemian), they are less a homogeneous community than a social phenomenon: young, often liberal-minded professionals, forced to consider less salubrious districts as rent prices in the city have rocketed. About these newest arrivals Madeleine is keeping an open mind: “They seem friendly. They are clean enough,” she says from beneath that inscrutable grin. “And their children are very polite. Zona Franca (Barcelona) EL LUGAR El espigón del puerto de barcos transatlánticos y mercancías de Barcelona. Perfecto para estar tranquilo y disfrutar de un buen día de sol. Es raro encontrarse a alguien más que no sea un pescador.

Una cárcel abandonada. Imaginar cómo era aquel espacio cuando había vida y descifrar cómo funcionaba todo o idear un plan para escapar es bastante entretenido.

La carretera acaba en un bar-restaurante abandonado y una explanada de asfalto. A partir de allí empieza una zona con grandes bloques cuadrados de cemento amontonados unos encima de otro y pilas de mercancías.

Parece un ‘tetris’ mal hecho. Si continuas en esa dirección llegarás al final de espigón. El mar te rodeará por todas partes, es genial. ¡Al loro con la bocina de los transatlánticos!

Celdas abandonadas, pasillos, las cabinas de visita, galerías llenas de graffities y escombros... Recuerda a las típicas películas de pandilleros. Desde la azotea tienes una muy buena vista de Madrid.

Haz el picnic en la azotea al atardecer, a mediodía hace demasiado calor, y vete antes de que se vaya el sol. Para los más valientes, aconsejamos jugar al escondite. Llévate una buena manta para el suelo y buen calzado. El acompañamiento perfecto: Bloody Mary y nachos con guacamole.

WHERE The trans-Atlantic and freight ships pier in Barcelona. A perfect place to relax and enjoy a sunny day. You won’t bump into anyone, except maybe a fisherman.

WHAT YOU’LL SEE The road ends at an abandoned bar-restaurant and an asphalt esplanade. From there you’ll start seeing big blocks of cement piled on top of each other and large containers, like a badly played ‘Tetris’ game. If you continue in this direction you’ll get to the end of the pier, surrounded by the sea on all sides. It’s great! Just watch out for the trans-Atlantic ship horns, they’re extremely loud.

SOME TIPS Choose one of the gigantic rocks to place your towel on. You can’t swim but the sea breeze is very refreshing. Buy a newspaper (supplements and all) to read. If you take the bus at Plaza Colón it’ll drop you pretty close; by bike from here it takes about ten minutes.

WHERE An abandoned prison. Imagining what the place was like and what went on when it was functional, or devising some plan á la The Great Escape can be a lot of fun.

WHAT YOU’LL SEE Abandoned cells, corridors, visiting booths, walls covered in graffiti and rubble… It’s reminiscent of those typical gang movies.

From the rooftops you have some great views over Madrid.

SOME TIPS Start your rooftop picnic an hour or two before sunset; it’s too hot at midday. Take a good blanket for the floor and wear decent shoes.

Perfect accompaniment: a Bloody Mary and nachos with guacamole. For the more daring, we recommend playing hide and seek.

El olfato es mi sentido menos desarrollado. En mis textos abundan las descripciones visuales, las alusiones tĂĄctiles, gritos y sonidos, paladares; pero siempre faltan referencias al olor. De modo que este texto es un ejercicio: una gimnasia. Una gimnasia que consiste en estirar, esforzar la memoria para recordar una ciudad (Sevilla) y una de sus dimensiones (Âża quĂŠ diablos huele?).

The olfactory sense is the least developed of my senses. My writing abounds with visual descriptions, allusions to touch, screams and sounds, tastes; but references to smell are always missing.

Therefore, this text is an exercise: gymnastics.

Gymnastics that consist of stretching, straining my memory to remember a city (Seville) and one of its dimensions (what the hell does it smell of?).

UN OLOR A sevilla

Charles Baudelaire nos enseñó que el mundo es un templo de pilares vivientes, donde todo –todo– está conectado mediante correspondencias. De modo que algún hilo debe unir mi primera visita a Sevilla, nocturna y blanca, con las tres siguientes. Un hilo de ecos.

Un hilo que atraviese aquella primera llegada, en un coche, con dos desconocidos que me habían recogido un puñado de horas antes cerca de Évora, en el sur de Portugal. En algún lugar de la frontera se pararon a cambiar dinero: un fajo de billetes. Todo tenía algo de película de Juanma Bajo Ulloa; incluidos los billetes de diez mil pesetas. Aunque parezca mentira, hubo un tiempo en que el euro no existió, en que cada frontera era un múltiple intercambio. En la estación de Sevilla me recogió el amigo de un amigo. Recuerdo una ducha.

Y una ruta, de noche: detuvo el coche bajo la Torre del Oro, hizo una llamada, adiviné su vicio; arrancó, nos dirigió hacia las Tres Mil Viviendas, paró de nuevo: no pude ver qué hacía junto a una de las ventanas con las persianas no del todo bajadas. De modo que Sevilla esa noche olió a blanco y a noche. Es decir, a nada.

Regresé dos veces con alumnos, en sendos viajes de final de curso. Ambos fueron en Semana Santa, es decir, con las calles atestadas de procesiones y máscaras y cruces y nazarenos y cirios altos como estacas. Fotogramas en blanco y negro de una película del Ku Kux Klan, al caer la noche. Caminos blancos de cera y el olor, muy fuerte, tan fuerte que incluso alguien sin olfato como yo puede recordarlo. Sevilla huele a cera fundida, pronto endure-

cida como hielo de patinaje sobre los adoquines. Sevilla huele a Santa Inquisición, a hoguera en la Plaza Mayor –aunque ahora se llame Plaza Nueva. Sevilla debe verse en un espejo cóncavo y en otro convexo, simultáneamente, como España, de la que fue capital económica durante algún tiempo, de la que sigue siendo capital simbólica.

Caminos blancos de cera y el olor, muy fuerte, tan fuerte que incluso alguien sin olfato como yo puede recordarlo.

Sevilla huele a cera fundida, pronto endurecida como hielo de patinaje sobre los adoquines Paseando por sus calles descubrí el edificio donde nació el poeta Luis Cernuda. En el lugar que un día fue su casa ahora hay una tienda de espejos. Los espejos no huelen a nada: te devuelven (estás vivo) tu aliento.

La última vez que estuve en Sevilla fue para un congreso literario. Cuando al fin me quedé solo, recorrí sus barrios como si estuviera desnudo. Supongo que es la única vez que me ha gustado realmente la ciudad andaluza. Hubo azahar, entonces; hubo Guadalquivir; hubieron toldos blancos.

La flor tenía un olor; el río era húmedo e inabarcable como la mismísima economía; los toldos

te protegían del calor insoportable, soportándolo. Su blancura no importaba: lo que realmente era importante era su tacto. O mejor dicho: el tacto atenuado del sol sobre tu piel, gracias a ellos.

Definitivamente, entonces, se me trastocó la percepción sensorial de Sevilla. Tomé vino, pero sorbiendo su color; comí pescaíto frito y salmorejo, pero sintiendo

más el tacto en el cielo de la boca que el sabor en las papilas gustativas; paseé cerca de la Torre del Oro y recordé el autostop, el vicio, la nada, la cera fundida y los espejos.

Elementos de una misma red, sensorial, intelectual, enigmática: la que nos ata a un lugar, en la memoria.

A friend of a friend picked me up at Seville’s train station. I remember a shower. And a night-time route: he stopped the car below the Torre de Oro, made a call, I guessed his vice; he started the car, drove us towards the Tres Mil Viviendas

White paths of wax and the smell strong, so strong that even someone like me, with no sense of smell, can remember it. Seville smells of molten wax, quickly hardened to ice on the cobblestones

Charles Baudelaire showed us that the world is a temple of living pillars, where everything – everything – is connected through correspondences.

Thus, a thread must link my first visit to Seville, nocturnal and white, to the three following ones.

A thread of echoes. A thread that runs through that first arrival, in a car with two strangers who had picked me up a handful of hours earlier near Évora, in southern

Portugal. Some place near the border they stopped to change money: a bundle of notes. It all resembled a film by Juanma Bajo Ulloa. Including the ten-thousand pesetas notes. Strange as it may seem, there was a time when the euro did not exist, when every

neighbourhood, stopped again: I couldn’t see what he was doing next to the half-lowered blinds.

Afterwards we went to buy more in the Tres Mil Viviendas neighbourhood: he stopped in front of a ground floor window, exchanged money for a small paper envelope.

Therefore, Seville smells of white and of night. That is, of nothing.

I went back there twice with students, on end-of-term trips. Both took place during Holy Week, that is, with the streets full of processions and masks and crosses and ‘nazarenos’ (those members of the brotherhoods who wear pointed hoods) and candles as tall as clubs. As night falls, stills in black and white from a Ku Klux Klan film. White paths of wax and the smell strong, so strong that even someone like me, with no sense of smell, can remember it. Seville smells of molten wax, quickly hardened to ice on the cobble-

stones. Seville smells of the Holy Inquisition, of bonfires on the Main Square – even though today it is called ‘Plaza Nueva’, New Square. Seville has to be looked at simultaneously in a convex and a concave mirror, just like Spain, whose economic capital it was for some time, whose symbolic capital it still is.

Walking through its streets I discovered the building where the poet Luis Cernuda was born.

The place that was once his home now houses a mirror shop. Mirrors don’t smell of anything: they return your breath (you’re alive).

The last time I was in Seville was for a literary congress. When I was alone at last, I walked through the streets as if naked. I guess it was the only time I really liked the Andalusian city. There were blossoming orange trees; there was the Guadalquivir river; there were white awnings. The flowers had a scent; the river was humid and incomprehensible like the economy itself; the awnings protected you from the unbearable heat, bearing it. Their whiteness didn’t matter: what really mattered was their touch. Or rather, the weakened touch of the sun on your skin that they granted. That was when my sensorial perception of Seville changed once and for all. I had wine, but soaking up its colour; I ate fried fish and ‘salmorejo’, thick cold vegetable soup, but noticing more the touch at the roof of the mouth than the flavour on my taste buds; I walked by the Torre del Oro and remembered the hitchhiking, the vice, the nothing, the molten wax and the mirrors.

Elements of one network, sensorial, intellectual, enigmatic: the one that ties us to a place, in memory.
