Full time jobs for success story leisure apprentices Three young, local leisure workers have secured full time jobs with Blackpool Council after completing successful apprenticeships. Rob Cousins, River Starkey and Rob Perch, all from Blackpool, have completed a year of dedicated on the job learning, training and work experience in a number of different fields from lifeguarding to activity leadership. They achieved certificates in leisure operations, exercise and fitness, circuit training instruction, activity leadership, instructing adolescents, employment awareness and function skills as well as a Level 2 NVQ in exercise and fitness and the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification. Another apprentice, Jack Harrison, has also successfully passed the qualification and also remains an employee with Blackpool Council. Cllr Graham Cain, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for leisure and tourism, who met and gave a talk to the trio at the start of their apprenticeship, said he was extremely proud of their progress. He said: ‘It’s great to see these young lads doing so well. When I met them close to the start of their apprenticeships they were extremely enthusiastic. Now though, they are 10

polished and extremely professional members of staff and you can see the difference. It’s a credit to them and a credit to the staff who have taken them under their wing. We always want to give opportunities to local young people wherever we can and this is a prime example.’ River Starkey, 18, from Blackpool, added: ‘The course has been great and we’ve learnt as we went along. The hardest thing for me was dealing with customers and speaking to people because I wasn’t very confident but I’ve got a lot better and the training has helped. I’ve enjoyed the college side of things a lot too.’ This year’s intake of leisure apprentices Josh Crowe, Jordan Cawley , Alexandra Mason, Jamie Coey and Jason Watson are following the successful footsteps of their predecessors’ and have already achieved the National Pool Lifeguard qualification.

Blackpool News Furniture amnesty as old tables and chairs to be taken away for free A special deal to remove unwanted dining tables, dining chairs and sofas for free is currently running until the end of August. The Bulky Matters deal, which normally costs £18 to remove three items, will take away dining tables, dining chairs, sofas and easy chairs free of charge for the next two months. The furniture will then be reused to benefit local people. The deal will run until 31 August 2014. Bulky Matters, is a partnership between Blackpool Council and the charity ‘Furniture Matters’, turning Blackpool’s bulky waste into a reusable resource to benefit the community. Three items must be removed to make the most of the deal, so neighbours are being encouraged to club together to try and make up the total, as long as all items are collected from the same address. Residents who take up the regular Bulky Matters service of 3 items for £18 will also be able to get the furniture removed for free. Guesthouses and hotels will also be able to benefit from the offer, providing the furniture is a domestic item. The regular Bulky Matters service also collects wardrobes and other wooden furniture, soft furnishings, domestic electrical appliances, kitchen items, bric-a-brac, IT equipment, toys/games and bicycles, and then distributes them to local reuse and charitable organisations. A minimum of three items can be removed for just £18. Cllr Amy Cross, Blackpool Council’s Cabinet Member for Streetscene and the environment said: ‘Many people have pieces of furniture that they no longer need. Bulky Matters will come to collect and remove furniture hassle-free. This furniture can then be spruced up and re-used in the community, so you know that it has gone to another good home. We’ve created a special furniture amnesty to make it easy for people to get rid of their old dining tables and dining chairs for free. It’s a great deal and I’d encourage people to get involved. Even if you don’t have three items, you can club together with some
12
of your neighbours and friends to make the most of this special offer.’ In 2013, the service collected over 6,500 bulky items in Blackpool with around 60% of all the items reused or recycled. This reduces the amount of waste that would otherwise go to landfill, as well as helping out the local community. For the best chance of Bulky Matters being able to recycle the item, please leave them in a dry space indoors ahead of the collection. To arrange an appointment, ring Customer First on 477477 and request a Bulky Collection. Please note that this is a pre-pay service and you will need your card details with you when you book your collection. To find out more about the service, visit www. blackpool.gov.uk/bulkymatters

Sir Peter Blake statues return to Promenade
Blackpool Council’s Great Promenade Show on South Promenade can now boast the return of two sculptures designed by legendary artist Sir Peter Blake.
The Council has been working with sculpture specialists AB Fine Art Foundry to re-install the ‘Life as a Circus’ piece of artwork on the Promenade across from the Pleasure Beach. The artwork consists of two sculptures, ‘Four Man Up’ and ‘Equestrian Act’. The two statues depict balancing acts as seen in a circus, of strongmen, horses and a mermaid, each reaching around 10ft in height. Blackpool Council has been working to recreate the statues after they were damaged in 2011, and remould them in a material that holds no value to metal thieves. Cllr Christine Wright, cabinet member for culture and heritage at Blackpool Council said: ‘We are delighted to bring Sir Peter’s works back to the Promenade where they can be appreciated as part of a wonderful stroll along the Great Promenade Show. Blackpool is very proud of its high quality public art works that everyone can enjoy, many being made by internationally recognised artists. The Great Promenade Art Show along with works such as our award winning ‘Comedy Carpet’ by Gordon Young, are part of the many unique cultural experiences Blackpool has to offer.’ Following the replacement of the statues, the Great Promenade Show now consists of 10 pieces of artwork along Blackpool Promenade, 14
including works such as the Mirrorball and Glam Rocks and now joined on the Tower Headland by the award winning Comedy Carpet outside the Blackpool Tower. The show is generally thought of as an outdoor art gallery reflecting Blackpool’s history and character, with the works commissioned from both established and emerging artists. The original bronze statues have also been restored and will return to a secure space within the town in the near future.
Sir Peter Blake
Sir Peter Blake is widely regarded as the father of pop art. He studied at Gravesend School of Art before being accepted into the prestigious Royal Academy of Art in London. His work extends across a diverse range of media including watercolour, drawings, prints, collage, painting, and sculpture. Sir Peter has designed many album covers including The Beatle’s ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ and Paul Weller’s ‘Stanley Road’ album. Sir Peter received his knighthood in 2002. Sir Peter Blake Picture by: Steve Vas / Featureflash

RSPCA SPONSOR A DOG KENNEL, CAT PEN OR SMALL ANIMAL PEN The kennel and cattery sponsorship scheme is a way in which you as an individual, part of a group or a business can support our animals by sponsoring an animal pen for a year. There are many types of animal pen to sponsor. With the scheme you won’t be helping just one animal, you’ll be sponsoring the lives of all who pass through our animal centre every year. Sponsorship is £50 for 6 months. In return we will place a certificate bearing your name on the appropriate pen, thanking you for your kind donation. If you are a company we are very happy to display details of your company. The £50 will go towards the costs of keeping the animals that use that pen. You may also want to visit your pen, over the 6 months, and see which animals you are helping. Contact the centre on enquiries@rspcablackpool.org.uk if you would like to take part. Mo money, less problems! For Mo Akhtar, starting up his own business was a distant dream.
Having worked in catering for much of his life, he knew he had the experience and know how to make and sell quality food. What he lacked though was the business experience and understanding to make his plan a success and set up a business on his own. He worried about losing his investment and being unable to make it work. Fast forward a year and following a little help from Blackpool Council’s Get Started team – part of the Start Up Lancashire service supported by the European Regional Development Fund – he is now the proud owner of thriving Central Drive-based takeaway restaurant, Tony’s Grill. He employs six people and his turnover has trebled in 18 months. He’s even looking to the future and may hire more staff with a busy season ahead. The future, in short, looks bright. Mo said ‘I have a lot of experience in catering and I was interested in investing some money and setting up my own business. I’d heard about the council’s Get Started team but I wasn’t sure how it all worked. I attended a few sessions and was able to sit down for a few one-on-one chats about my plans and it was really helpful. They talked to me about the pros and cons of setting up my own business and

I went to sessions on everything from taxation and bookkeeping and was able to discuss things like licensing and planning issues. I got started myself last September and it has grown and grown. Now I’m looking at hiring some more staff for the season and it’s going really well.’ Mo’s story is one of many resulting from Blackpool Council’s Get Started scheme. More than 100 new small businesses opened last year as a result of the scheme and Cllr Fred Jackson, who is in charge of the scheme, hopes for similar success this year. Cllr Jackson, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for urban regeneration, said ‘It’s always very pleasing to see new businesses opening up in Blackpool. I wish Mo the very best of luck and I hope we will see lots of new businesses opening up in 2014. We want people to know that, if they are a small business looking to setup in Blackpool, help and support is available.’ To find out more about how you could ‘Get Started’ in business, call Blackpool Council on 01253 477147

Blackpool News Joan Humble presents a special street sign to Bairstow Street residents and their local councillors
Joy at ‘Street of the Year’ award Businesses on Bairstow Street are celebrating after being named “Street of the Year 2014” by the Blackpool Civic Trust. The street, which is in Foxhall in Bloomfield ward, is one of the most colourful for miles around Flanked by hotels painted all the colours of the rainbow and adorned with hanging baskets and flowers, the busy, narrow street was said by the judges to be a shining example of community spirit. Hoteliers have now been presented with a special sign to mark the achievement. Blackpool Civic Trust chairman, Joan Humble, said: ‘The judges who looked at the entries were impressed that, in this very busy hospitality street, it is clear that almost every business has co-operated to make this street very attractive. The public areas as well as the hotel fronts have been well looked after and tidied and community spirit is very evident. I was pleased to meet some of the residents, who so clearly took pride in their area, and thank the two local councillors, Graham Cain and John Jones, for making the nomination to the Civic Trust’s competition.’ It is the second time the street has scooped the award. They also picked up the prize in 2011. Sharon Gaskell, from Hawthorn House, said ‘Everyone on Bairstow Street is delighted. As a group of hoteliers, we all take pride in 26
our properties and like to make our street look attractive. We believe this encourages business and promotes community spirit.’ Ward councillors were also full of praise for the work that has taken place. Cllr John Jones, said ‘It’s fantastic to see all the hoteliers working together and what an effect it has had. As well as looking fantastic, there is a really tranquil atmosphere and it’s a huge credit to all involved.’ Cllr Graham Cain, added ‘The street looks fantastic and the award is richly deserved. Bairstow Street is a gem and an example to everyone of what can be achieved.’ The Blackpool Civic Trust also handed out awards recently to three Blackpool primary schools. A large number of schools took part in the Blackpool scarecrow festival, which was held at Salisbury woodland. Judges award first place to St Bernadette’s Catholic Primary school while Boundary Primary School and St Kentigern’s Catholic Primary School scooped second and third place respectively. Kingcraig Primary School, meanwhile, scooped the overall Civic Trust prize.

Site visit to see Foxhall Village progress Bloomfield ward councillors, Graham Cain and John Jones, have visited Blackpool’s under construction, Foxhall Village, housing development. The pair, local councillors for the area, were keen to keep a close eye on progress and look for any ways they can help the process run smoothly for all concerned. Hollinwood Homes is currently in the process of creating a new 400 home village which is split between two linked sites: one to the west of Central Drive, south of Rigby Rd and north of Blackpool Football Club and another area to the east of Blundell St, north of Rigby Rd and south of Princess St. Preparation work has now been completed and building has begun. Cllr Jones said ‘It was a very interesting and informative visit and we thank Hollinwood Homes for showing us around. It was extremely interesting to see the progress that is being made on the £50 million regeneration project and you can start to envisage what the new community will be like once it’s complete.’
L-R - Steve Mathews, Blackpool Council head of housing, Cllr John Jones, Mark Chadwick from Hollinwood Homes and Cllr Graham Cain
Cllr Cain added ‘The development is great news for Bloomfield and will have a real regenerative effect on the area. As well as seeing the bricks and mortar taking shape into buildings, it was also very pleasing to see young local workers learning their trade.’ The finished homes will be highly energy efficient, with flexible parking arrangements and plenty of outdoor space and will be available from £95,000. Roads around them will be named after Blackpool FC’s legendary 1953 FA Cup winning team (and Seasiders legend, Jimmy Armfield CBE). The first homes are expected to be completed by the end of the year with many more set to be completed in 2015. The full scheme is expected to take around 10 years to complete in full.
