The Punks Are Coming...
Rebellion Festival the original Punk and Alternative Festival returns to Blackpool this August. 4 Days, 6 stages, over 200 bands Acoustic Stage, Punk Art, Cinema, Merchandise - join them to celebrate all things Punk Rock..... Rebellion Festival is the largest INDEPENDENT Punk / Alternative music festival in the world. Over 4 days every August in Blackpool, the very best in Punk gather for the social event of the year. Many treat it as a main holiday and come every year so there is a very familiar feel to the weekend and it’s like one big family - all 4000 of them!
All forms of punk are represented with Anarcho bands playing alongside ‘77 Punks groups on the same bill as Oi bands sharing the same stage as UK82 style bands who are appearing with Street Punk outfits next to the new breed of young punk bands coming through etc etc.....! There is also an acoustic stage and an alternative stage BIZARRE BAZAAR which has comedy, burleque dancing and a variety of other entertainment........Oh yeah, and there is PUNK ROCK BINGO! Thursdays final act are the Dickies an American punk rock band formed in San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles in 1977. The band always had a humorous, comical style that has been called “easy listening punk”, “MOR punk,” and also “bubble-gum punk” Friday ends with Stiff Little Fingers a punk rock band from Belfast, Northern Ireland. They formed in 1977, at the height of the Troubles. They split up after six years and four albums, although they reformed five years later, in 1987. Despite major personnel changes, they are still touring and recording as of 2013. On Saturday Killing Joke end the evening, an English post-punk band formed in October 1978 in Notting Hill, London, England. A key 10
influence on industrial rock, their early music was described by critics as “quasi-metal ... dancing to a tune of doom and gloom”, which gradually evolved over the years, incorporating elements of electronic music, synthpop, gothic rock and alternative rock, though always emphasising Coleman’s “savagely strident vocals”. Finding modest commercial success, Killing Joke have influenced many later bands and artists, such as Nirvana, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, and Soundgarden. The weekend ends Sunday with punk legends NOFX a californian punk rock band from Los Angeles, California. NOFX’s mainstream success was signified by a growing interest in punk rock during the 1990s, but unlike many of their contemporaries, they have never been signed to a major label. NOFX has released twelve studio albums, fifteen extended plays and a number of seven-inch singles. Their latest studio album, Self Entitled, was released on September 11, 2012. The group has sold over 6 million records worldwide, making them one of the most successful independent bands of all time. Other bands performing over the weekend include Blackpool based Dinosaurs Are S*** Dragons, Biohazard, Slaughter and the Dogs, UK Subs, DOA, Agnostic Front, King Kurt, The Chameleons and many more Full line up, tickets and info at www.rebellionfestivals.com Thursday 7th to Sunday 10th August 2014 (4 days) at the Winter Gardens, Church Street, Blackpool, FY1 1HL

(L-R) Morgan and Bobbie Porteous-Byrne, 8 and 11, are happy with their tickets!
New Promenade box office captures Mamma Mia! excitement A new seafront box office has been set up to help ride the wave of excitement that Mamma Mia! has created in Blackpool. There are now just two weeks before the world famous show begins its 12-week summer run at the resort’s Opera House. And now, with tickets still proving popular, an extra concession has been created to cater to popular demand. It’s up and running now near to the Comedy Carpet and just south of The Blackpool Tower and will also sell tickets to some of of Blackpool’s top attractions at discounted prices. It will be open from noon until 4pm with expanded opening hours of noon until 8pm after 19 July. Cllr Graham Cain, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for leisure and tourism, said: ‘This is just another way in which people can get their hands on tickets for Mamma Mia! The momentum the show has generated is fantastic and you can really sense the excitement building in the resort. From hoteliers and their visitors to local people and their families and friends, this is the show that everyone wants to see. We’re incredibly proud to have brought this international phenomenon to Blackpool and I would urge everyone who loves the town to get behind it and go and see what all the fuss is about.’ As well as selling tickets to Mamma Mia! the temporary box office will also sell tickets to all 12
Merlin attractions (The Blackpool Tower, Madame Tussauds, The Sea Life Centre) as well as tickets for Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Illuminasia, Ripley’s Believe It or Not and Blackpool Zoo. Tickets for this year’s Illuminations Switch-On Festival Weekend concert which features singing superstar, Rebecca Ferguson, amongst other top names, are also available priced at just £20 for access to both the Saturday and Sunday events as part of an early bird offer up to 30 June. Mamma Mia! is described as ‘the ultimate feel-good musical’. Judy Craymer’s ingenious vision uses Abba’s timeless songs to help tell an enchanting tale of family and friendship unfolding on a Greek island paradise. To date, it has been seen by more than 50 million people in 37 productions in 14 different languages grossing more than $2 billion at the box office. Mamma Mia! The Movie is the highest grossing musical film and it is estimated that one in four households in the UK has the DVD. It is one of only five musicals to have run for more than 10 years both on Broadway and in the West End, and in 2011, it became the first Western musical ever to be staged in Chinese in the People’s Republic of China.

Blackpool gets off to a flying start
Blackpool’s tourism season has got off to a flying start with over three million adult visits between January and April - 600,000 higher than in the same period in 2013.
The independent, UK-wide Omnibus survey has revealed that the resort saw year-on year growth across all four months, with April (which included Easter) recording the highest visitor figures at one million visits. Visitor satisfaction levels also improved significantly – 89% in 2014 compared to 75% in 2013. The Omnibus survey supports the evidence that has already emerged from a number of visitor attractions in the resort that reported an exceptional Easter trading performance. Although the number of adult visits grew from 2.5m in 2013 to 3.1m in 2014, most of the growth has come from day trips rather than staying visits. There were approximately 1m staying visits over the four month period, compared to 2m day trips. The most popular reasons for visiting the resort were Pleasure Beach, the coastal location and the range of family-friendly attractions. Collectively, these provided more than 50% of the primary reason for visiting the resort. Illuminasia, Blackpool’s newest visitor attraction which opened within the Winter Gardens at Easter, also figures in the survey as the highest visited “event” during the four month period.
Cllr Graham Cain, Cabinet Member for Tourism and Leisure, said: ‘We have already had reports from a number of businesses across the town that 2014 has got off to a very positive start The figures from the annual Omnibus survey support that – and it is very pleasing to see such exceptional growth at the start of a new tourism season. If there is a challenge, it is to convert more of these day trips into staying visitors.’ The resort has benefited from TV advertising campaigns from the likes of Pleasure Beach and Sandcastle over the first part of the year and in July the first destination TV ad for years will be broadcast in Scotland and northern England, supported by extensive PR and digital activity. The summer will also see a range of high-profile events including the opening of the international production of MAMMA MIA, which opens for a 12-week run on June 20; the two-day Air Show in August; and a three-day Illuminations Switch On Festival Weekend, which will take place between August 29 and 31. Cllr Cain added: ‘The introduction of new highquality entertainment gives people new reasons to come to the resort and, with events such as the Switch-On Festival Weekend, a real incentive to stay over and enjoy all that Blackpool has to offer.’

Fylde Coast Societies celebrate civic pride with examples of Fylde Coast architecture Blackpool Civic Trust, Fleetwood Civic Society and Lytham St Annes Civic Society joined together to host an exhibition called “ Buildings of the Fylde Coast: an Architectural Photographic Exhibition” at Fylde Gallery, Lytham. The exhibition was opened by Chair of Civic Voice, Freddie Gick. Dr Gick said ‘This project shows that civic societies are not just about protesting. By coming together Blackpool, Lytham St Annes and Fleetwood have put together a fantastic exhibition and are showing what can happen when we work together.’ The exhibition features large photographic images and items from Blackpool, Fleetwood and Lytham St Annes and the exhibition will run from May 28th to Friday 4th July and will be a contribution to national Civic Day. Mrs Marion Coupe, Chair of the Lytham St Annes Civic Society said ‘This has been a true partnership project between the three different groups. The Fylde coast is one of the best places in the world , and Lytham St Annes Civic Society is proud to host this exhibition with our friends in Blackpool and Fleetwood. We are grateful for the support from Booths Supermarket in the use of Fylde Gallery, and also to Blackpool council, for providing officer support in making the project happen.’
project. This is how civic societies should work, particularly where there is a shared history or where , like on the Fylde, we’re all so physically close.’ Margaret Daniels, Chair of Fleetwood Civic Society added, ‘The exhibition has offered all of us an opportunity to work together and appreciate the variety of buildings we have on the Fylde coast. We’ve also learned more about each other as societies, sharing ideas about future projects and we’ve all realised that it’s important that the exhibition leaves a legacy of joint working for all of us.’ Dr Gick finished by saying ‘I would now encourage civic groups across England to take inspiration from the work of Blackpool, Lytham St Annes and Fleetwood. Working together on joint projects is a fantastic way to raise the profile of the civic society movement. By coming together and sharing the story of the Fylde coast, these groups are saying “we care about where we live”, Well done to all concerned.’
Her sentiments were echoed by Joan Humble , Chair of Blackpool Civic Trust, ‘It’s great to be working with our neighbour societies on this 14

Have You Thought About Being A Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator? Neighbourhood Watch, along with a host of other Watch Schemes that the Police has created, brings a community together with the same goal in mind – to help make a particular area a better place to live; people watch out for each other and tell the Police if they suspect a crime is taking place or there are circumstances that may lead to a crime – such as suspicious people or vehicles driving around the neighbourhood. A Watch scheme is a citizen-organised system of policing in a particular community or environment to prevent crime and disorder. Being a Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator is not a difficult or time-consuming task – in fact, you decide the number of homes you wish to include in your Watch scheme.

Blackpool News Michael Flynn with his award
Award winning Michael top learner in North West
Local learner Michael Flynn has taken the top gong as the North West Learning in Families and Communities Individual Award Winner The award was presented by NIACE (National Institute of Adult Continuing Education) at a special event last night at Manchester Museum.
Jenny and Tracey, and Wendy for putting the courses on. I want to dedicate this award to all of them. Thank you.’
Michael Flynn has been volunteering with the adult learning service for the last two years, and has used adult learning courses himself to make him better equipped to support other people taking on classes. Michael, who suffers from autism, started out volunteering but was shy and lacking in confidence. After taking the Learning Disabilities Advocacy course, Michael was able to express himself better, and has massively grown in his confidence.
Cllr Ivan Taylor, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for children’s service said: ‘A lot of people think that learning finishes when you leave school. In fact, there are dozens of ways that adults, and entire families, can continue to learn a variety of new skills in a friendly setting. Michael is a fantastic example of somebody who is continuing to stretch himself and learn new things. I’m absolutely delighted that he’s been awarded for his drive and commitment towards teaching himself new skills. He’s a great example to all of us.’
To this day, Michael continues to take the classes both as a learner and as a volunteer helper, and was this year been nominated for the NIACE Adult Learner of the Year Award, following which he won the regional award. Michael said: ‘I have loved the adult learning courses, the tutors and support have been great all along the way, and I feel now that I can join other courses and feel stronger in myself. I’m enjoying supporting other people so that they can move on in life too. I am very proud to receive this award. There is a lot of hard work that has gone into it. I would like to thank my excellent tutor, Sandeep, and learning assistants,

David Hughes, NIACE Chief Executive, said: “The achievements of all of this year’s award winners are incredible. Their stories prove that lifelong learning makes a huge contribution to a vibrant and prosperous society and a healthy and growing economy. I am sure that the dedication and ambition our winners have shown will inspire others to get into learning and help achieve their goals.” To find out more about taking up a new adult learning course, call 478131 or email adult. learning@blackpool.gov.uk

RSPCA SPONSOR A DOG KENNEL, CAT PEN OR SMALL ANIMAL PEN The kennel and cattery sponsorship scheme is a way in which you as an individual, part of a group or a business can support our animals by sponsoring an animal pen for a year. There are many types of animal pen to sponsor. With the scheme you won’t be helping just one animal, you’ll be sponsoring the lives of all who pass through our animal centre every year. Sponsorship is £50 for 6 months. In return we will place a certificate bearing your name on the appropriate pen, thanking you for your kind donation. If you are a company we are very happy to display details of your company. The £50 will go towards the costs of keeping the animals that use that pen. You may also want to visit your pen, over the 6 months, and see which animals you are helping. Contact the centre on enquiries@rspcablackpool.org.uk if you would like to take part. Funny Girls new to the Blackpool Resort Pass
Blackpool’s world-famous Funny Girls show has now been added to the awardwinning Blackpool Resort Pass. The cabaret venue, celebrating its twentieth birthday this year, is the newest addition to the Resort Pass, which gives visitors yet another way to experience all that Blackpool has to offer. Almost £1m worth of Blackpool Resort Passes were sold in their first year on sale with visitors travelling from as far away as Australia and India to enjoy the resort’s numerous attractions. Funny Girls is one of several new Resort Pass bolt-ons for 2014. Others include: Blackpool’s newest attraction Illuminasia, Viva Showbar, Ripleys Believe It Or Not, Hot Ice, The Blackpool Tower Ballroom and The Blackpool Tower Ballroom with afternoon tea. The Blackpool Tower Circus, Blackpool Transport tickets and car parking passes can also be purchased as bolt-ons. As well as bringing key attractions together in one pass, the Blackpool Resort Pass is also designed to encourage visitors to stay longer in the resort. Research by VisitBlackpool revealed of 349 people surveyed about the Blackpool Resort Pass more than 67 per cent said they stayed in the resort for four nights or more while using it and 99 per cent said they would recommend it to a friend. Cllr Graham Cain, Blackpool Council cabinet member for leisure and tourism, said: ‘The feedback last year was fantastic and we have responded to requests for more entertainment in the evening to be added. We continue to work with our partners in the resort to ensure the Blackpool Resort Pass continues to be a success this year offering huge discounts but also catering for different audiences.’ 24
Phil Holmes, from Funny Girls, added: ‘As one of Blackpool’s most visited live entertainment showbars and must see destination venues for visitors, Funny Girls is delighted to join forces with VisitBlackpool and Blackpool’s iconic landmark attractions on the Blackpool Resort Pass. Every year, thousands of visitors come from all over the UK to experience the legendary Funny Girls show. The new shows and entertainment bolt on package is a brilliant way for people to enjoy a full on entertainment experience in Blackpool throughout the day and into the early evening. It’s encouraging to be able to work together with our resort’s other great attractions as our shared aim is to offer a fun, memorable and happy holiday experience.’ There are two Blackpool Resort Passes: The Original Resort Pass - Gives visitors access to SIX attractions – Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Nickelodeon Land, The Blackpool Tower Eye and 4D Experience, The Blackpool Tower Dungeon, SEA LIFE Blackpool and Madame Tussauds. Cost is £52.50 representing a saving of more than £35 when bought online. Resort Pass Plus - Offers access to NINE attractions – Includes those in the Original Resort Pass plus Blackpool Zoo, Sandcastle Waterpark and Blackpool Model Village. Cost is £78.50 representing a saving of more than £50 when bought online. For more information go to www.blackpoolresortpass.com For more information on Funny Girls, visit www.funnygirlsonline.co.uk

Blackpool News Kevin Pettitt getting ready to put posters up ahead of Blackpool’s summer parking offer
Summer car parking special on now The signs are up and the machines are all programmed – Blackpool’s summer parking offer is on now Finishing touches have been applied to car parks with posters being put up to make sure local residents and visitors do not miss out on the offer which slashes prices to just £3 for 10 hours parking. The ‘Park and Smile’ campaign is designed to give people a friendly welcome into Blackpool and comes in response to calls for lower car parking prices from businesses and residents. A social media campaign is also underway to promote the deal and residents, local businesses and the media are asked to back Blackpool and alert their friends and customers by sharing or ‘Re-Tweeting’ posts by the council’s official social media sites www.facebook.com/ bpoolcouncil and www.twitter.com/bpoolcouncil. Cllr John Jones, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport, said ‘This is a great offer which I hope will put a smile on people’s faces this summer. We hope this will help businesses and residents in Blackpool and what we want now is for everyone to help spread the word. We hope residents, business, the media and anyone who loves Blackpool will all do their best to help support local businesses and make sure people don’t miss out.’ The deal means that for just the price of a pint or a posh cup of coffee, residents and visitors can explore everything that Blackpool has to offer from soaking up the sunshine on the beaches to exploring the town’s exciting attractions. 26
It includes all town centre car parks apart from the popular Central, West Street and East Topping Street car parks which are already very well used at their current pricing point. The car parks included in the deal, all of which will be priced at £3 for 10 hours, are: • Bolton Street • Bonny Street • Chapel Street • Cocker Street • Cocker Square • Gynn Square • Lonsdale Road • Lytham Road • Queen Street • South King Street • Talbot Road The deal, which more than halves prices at all the car parks, will run every Saturday and Sunday throughout June and July. It started from the weekend of June 7th and will finish on July 26th and 27th. The success of the offer will be reviewed at the end of the deal and will help inform future decisions on car parking tariffs and policy. To check the available car parks online or your smartphone, visit our mobile friendly website, www.blackpool.gov.uk/parkandsmile

FOOD
The evenings are getting longer and warmer, and this simple salad is quick to prepare, which means less time in the kitchen and more time in the garden. Pour a glass of red wine, and enjoy!
Serves 4 Level of difficulty: Easy Preparation time: 15 minutes 1 cucumber 400g broccoli, cut into small florets 1 head of lettuce (or combine two varieties of lettuce) 1 pepper 8 cherry tomatoes 50g pistachios (or try walnuts, sunflower seeds, pine nuts ...) 100g of Iberico ham 6 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp sherry vinegar 1tsp smooth mustard 1 tsp runny honey 1 clove garlic, crushed Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste Cut the cucumber into thin slices using a peeler. Line the inside of four presentation rings with the cucumber slices. Place each on a plate and fill the rings with lettuce right up to the brim. Cook the broccoli in boiling water for up to three minutes until just tender Chop the peppers and tomatoes into small pieces and place on top of the lettuce along with the broccoli florets. Sprinkle the pistachios on top and add a few shavings of Iberico ham. Mix together all the ingredients for the vinaigrette and dress the salad. Then very slowly remove the rings to prevent the salad falling apart.
Rich in vitamins and minerals, this Mediterranean inspired dish makes for a quick and colourful supper. Perfect with warm crusty bread and a glass of wine!
Serves 4 Level of difficulty: Low Preparation time: 60 minutes 8 red peppers (can also be green or yellow) 8 canned sardines (in oil) Salt and black pepper, to taste For the vinaigrette: 3 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp sherry vinegar 1 small sweet onion, finely diced 1tbsp finely chopped parsley Balsamic glaze to decorate Place the peppers on a baking tray at roast at 220°C for 2030 minutes or until the skin in black. Cover with a clean wet cloth and allow them cool. Once the peppers are cool peel off the skin and remove seeds. Slice the peppers into strips. whisk the olive oil, vinegar, onion, salt, black pepper and parsley. Slice the sardines in half lengthways and remove bones. To serve: arrange the peppers on a place, top with the sardines and then spoon over the dressing. Decorate the plate with balsamic glaze. For this easy recipe, it is important to use high quality ingredients such as virgin olive oil. For an extra special touch use a balsamic glaze to decorate the plate (available in most supermarkets).
