Getting to the core of fitness Blackpool Council’s Get Started service has helped turn Thomas Watt’s dream into reality. Fitness instructor and personal trainer, Thomas Watt, with 15 years of experience in the fitness industry has launched his own business, Corefit, with the help of Blackpool Council’s Get Started service. Thomas said ‘People want to make a difference to their lifestyle, and improve their health and appearance, but do not want to be tied to a lengthy gym contract. Corefit offers a facility where people could train together in an outdoor environment, have fun and also get fit. Fitness on its own is often not enough and that is why part of my training involves producing a nutritional program for the individuals. I needed some help and business support to obtain the new enterprise and approached Get Started who helped me with one-to-one advice as well as several bespoke business courses designed to give me practical help. Thanks to them, I not only obtained the business support but was assisted to obtain financial support from the government’s new enterprise allowance scheme and am now up and running. We held our first session on Lawsons Field last month and it was a resounding success. It will be hard work but we already have our first courses full and more clients joining all the time.’
Thomas Watt, personal trainer Holly Andersen with a Corefit bootcamp
Corefit prides itself on being Blackpool’s first all year round outdoor training company, with versatile workouts so there is something to suit everyone’s needs, come rain or shine. Cllr Fred Jackson, cabinet member for urban regeneration, said ‘We are delighted to see yet another new business open in Blackpool thanks to the fantastic work that Get Started does in helping to get small businesses off the ground. New companies can start from a simple idea, passion or skill. Whatever your business, our experts will be on hand to help develop it into a functioning company, providing advice on business plans, accounting and accessing finance. We wish Thomas the best of luck!’ Get Started is part of the Start up Lancashire service supported by the European Regional Development Fund. To find out more about how you could “Get Started” in business, call Blackpool Council on 01253 477147
Blackpool RSPCA moves to new centre They are organising a sponosred bike ride to raise funds at the new unit. Blackpool RSPCA have recently moved from Division Lane in Marton to 74D Longview Animal Centre, Old Toms Lane, Stalmine, Lancashire, FY6 0JR. A new telephone number is awaiting to be confirmed but they can be contacted by email, enquiries@rspcablackpool.org.uk.
This is in case of any infection which might be brought in by a new arrival and then spread on to healthy animals.
They will be opening with just cats at first until the dog kennels are complete. There is a small animals unit which will also be opened sometime this year at the site. They hope you will all come and visit us and see our new state of the art centre. The animals will have better accommodation at the new site and it will be better working conditions for all the staff.
We assess the animals for up to 14 days in the isolation block before putting them up for homing. Some animals come in to us in awful conditions and need a lot of medical treatment before being healthy enough to find a new home so the isolation unit allows us to do this in a sterile, safe environment and treat the animals with what they need.
They are also organising a Sponsored Bike Ride. Anybody who would like to take part in the Sponsored Bike Ride in aid of raising money for the, Blackpool and North Lancashire RSPCA Branch then please get in touch. Natasha from the unit, has organised the ride in the hope of raising money to go towards the completion of the ISOLATION unit desperately needed at the new site in Stalmine.
The new isolation block will cost the centre £140,000 so we have a long way to go in raising the money. We are a self funded branch who relies heavily on donations, legacies and the local people’s generosity. If you wish to sponsor one of the staff taking part or you fancy taking part in the ride we would love to have you on board. Sponsor forms are available by email and at the charity shops Talbot Road, Highfield Road, Knott End and Morecambe.
The isolation unit plays a very crucial part at the animal centre as it keeps new arrivals away from all the current healthy animals that are up for homing.

Blackpool’s breath taking Air Show battled the elements to boost visitor numbers and wow the crowds.
Tens of thousands of people visited the resort this weekend to watch the world famous RAF Red Arrows, the Fylde’s very own Eurofighter Typhoon and many, many more spectacular flying machines. And despite rain on Sunday morning and winds on Monday afternoon which meant the programme had to be re-organised, lady luck shined on the resort to allow the show – in typical Blackpool style – to go on.
Heart North West’s Heart Angels were also on hand running competitions throughout the two days to win a fantastic VIP helicopter ride across the Blackpool coastline. Blackpool Air Show has now been wowing the public since 1909 when the town put on the very first official air show in Britain. That was the same year French flyer Louis Bleriot made the first historic crossing of the English Channel.
Cllr Graham Cain, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for leisure and tourism, said ‘I was out on the Promenade throughout the day on both Sunday and Monday and people were having a fantastic time. We have to give enormous credit to the brave pilots who showed off their skills in very difficult conditions and the crowds for braving the breeze to catch a glimpse of the Red Arrows, the Eurofighter Typhoon and the spectacular Breitling Wing Walkers and all the other performers. In true Blackpool style, the show must go on and I’m very proud of everyone who took part to make the 105th annual air show a very special occasion.’
Expect a similarly spectacular display next year!
As well as a range of spectacular displays, there were also stalls from the Friends of the Red Arrows, Disney Planes 2, the Lytham Spitfire and charities like the Royal British Legion, Blackpool Carers Centre and Foster Carers Ltd.

Windy weather fails to blow Blackpool Air Show off course!
Merlin Entertainments – which runs a host of attractions in the town including The Blackpool Tower, Madame Tussauds and Sea Life - together with Visit Blackpool, are driving the exciting family-focused awareness campaign to reenergise the iconic seaside resort. The initiative #Blackpoolsback aims to challenge any negative perceptions of the resort, by reminding families of everything Blackpool has to offer. This includes an unrivalled concentration of world-class family attractions, an award-winning beach as well as a summer packed with exciting events.

Yeadon Way closure update The £3.6 million project to repair Yeadon Way this autumn will carried out after the Illuminations have finished. Initially it was proposed that the road would need to be closed between October and April for vital repair work to be carried out. After listening to the views of Blackpool residents and businesses and speaking to contractors the work will now be delayed until November 10. Cllr John Jones, cabinet member for highways, said ‘There is no doubt that closing Yeadon Way will impact on the other routes around Blackpool. However it is such an important piece of work which does need to be carried out. I have met with representatives from Stay Blackpool and Blackpool BID and I know how strongly they feel about timing this work so it doesn’t coincide with the Illuminations. As a result we have asked contractors for a schedule that ensures the work is carried out in the shortest time possible. I am now confident that we can start in November and hopefully still be finished in time for the start of the Easter holidays. I appreciate that a closure of this scale will still cause disruption but that will only be for a matter of months. If this work was not carried out we run the risk of the road being permanently closed in the future cutting off a major route into Blackpool, that is not a risk I am willing to take.’ He continued ‘Although we have known about the damage for a number of years we have never been in a position where the funding was available to carry out the work that was required. We successfully bid for £2.5 Million funding from Department for Transport and now we can refurbish Yeadon Way securing its future for years to come. In addition to the structural repairs needed to the road, work also needs to be carried out to improve the drainage in the surrounding area. This aspect of the work is under way and is already having a positive impact on drainage. Culverts that run through both public and private land have become blocked over time impacting on the surface water flow which in turn has affected on the structure of Yeadon Way.’ Claire Smith, President of Stay Blackpool, said ‘We would like to thank Cllr Jones and the Council for consulting with Stay Blackpool, other business representatives and the contractors to produce a workable compromise. The fact that everyone is pulling together to ensure there is as little detrimental impact on local businesses as possible is a real positive and I feel sure there will

be more public and private sector consultation and partnership collaboration with future projects. We now have to ensure that as many residents and businesses as possible are able to access and understand the finalised diversion routes.’ Eileen Ormand, Blackpool’s Town Centre Manager and BID Manager, said ‘Further to the consultation with Blackpool Council, we very much welcome the agreement to delay the closing of this important route into Blackpool under after the crucial trading period of October half term and the conclusion of this year’s Illuminations. Plans are in place to provide clear signage on alternative routes to ensure that the traffic coming into Blackpool whilst Yeadon Way is closed can reach its destination without any confusion. With the extremely important Christmas trading period coming so close after the start of the work, the directional signage will ensure that the retail and leisure trade does not suffer throughout this important time of year due to the closure of Yeadon Way.’ The exact timetable for closure is currently been drawn up and will be published along with diversion routes once it is finalised. This will be distributed to residents, businesses and visitors, there will also be a public exhibition held in the town centre before the work begins. Further updates will be posted at www. blackpool.gov.uk

Blackpool Council’s Stanley Park in is one of the very best in the UK – and that’s official!
Stanley Park received a Green Flag Award 2014, handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, which recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. The award follows the recently received ‘certificate of excellence’ from review website Tripadvisor. The certificate has been awarded based on the quality of reviews and opinions that the park has earned on the website over the last year. The three hundred and ninety acre Blackpool Park boasts beautiful Rose, Remembrance and Italian Gardens, water fountains, statues, Boat Lake, bandstand and the impressive Cocker Tower, a memorial to Blackpool’s first Mayor Dr William Cocker. The Park proudly attracts interest to England’s finest examples of Art Deco design, the Art Deco Café is a unique historic restaurant offering spectacular views. A brand new animal farm themed children’s play area aimed at 2-8 year olds has also recently opened, now one of the largest outdoor facilities of its kind in the North West Cllr Graham Cain, cabinet member leisure and tourism, said ‘We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award for ninth time from Keep Britain Tidy. This award recognises the parks managers, staff and volunteers, who through their hard work have created a green space of the very highest quality for people in

Blackpool to enjoy. Stanley Park continues to be a popular attraction for residents and visitors alike; it is a Grade II listed jewel in Blackpool’s crown.’ The Friends of Stanley Park play a fundamental role in the parks success - contributing by running the park visitor centre, helping with fund raising for park improvements, organising music in the park bandstand events and undertaking practical projects. Elaine Smith, Friends of Stanley Park chairman, said ‘We are thrilled to receive the award again. This year the park is the busiest I’ve ever known it which is wonderful to see and I hope it continues. Stanley Park is the heart of Blackpool for residents and visitors – very fitting as the park is the shape of a heart! We still have a number of groups on the bandstand and events coming up throughout the summer for people to enjoy.’ A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities. Stanley Park is among a record-breaking 1,476 parks and green spaces that received a prestigious Green Flag Award.

500,000 reasons why Blackpool is blossoming New businesses are benefitting from more than £500,000 worth of Government start up loans, secured for them by Blackpool Council.
Northern Promenade. Photo: Paul J Martin / Shutterstock.com
The council’s Get Started scheme – part of the Start Up Lancashire service supported by the European Regional Development Fund – plays a key role in supporting new business and helping it to develop. Last year, it helped 100 new businesses get underway and has helped 900 since 2007 by providing business advice and support and access to finance. And they know more than most that securing the finance needed to start up in business can often prove one of the toughest challenges. But with the Government’s Start Up Loans scheme, which was originally for 18-30 year olds to start up a business, opening up to all age groups, the team have been able to take advantage and secure support for more and more Blackpool entrepreneurs. Now the help the council has been able to source from the scheme since September 2012 has reached half a million pounds. Cllr Fred Jackson, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for urban regeneration, said: ‘It’s pleasing that Blackpool Council is leading the way promoting the entrepreneur spirit so evident in our town. The Get Started Scheme was set up seven years ago to break down barriers that prevent businesses from starting up. They assist by providing expert advice and support to any Blackpool resident thinking of starting up a business. It really is a one stop service, facilitating the development of someone’s simple idea and turning it into a comprehensive plan, utilising training courses and one to one planning meetings. At a time when the local economy is starting to grow, it is important we help people become their own bosses and I look forward to hearing some more great success stories. We’ve helped 85 businesses secure a total of £500,000 14
from the Start Up Loans scheme and we hope that level of support can continue.’ New businesses helped by Get Started span a huge range of fields from film production, tradesmen and gardeners to artists and IT experts. Nicola Attwood who set up Axon Communications on Empress Drive with her husband Chris, said: ‘Getting in touch with Get Started was the best decision we have ever made. They not only helped us in the early day but continue to keep in touch and assist in the development of our business. We have now moved into new areas, such as WiFi solutions for hotels and caravan parks as well as other multiple occupancy sites. It makes a huge difference to have the backing of such a dedicated professional service provided by Blackpool Council.’ And Alistair Taylor, runner up in the 2012 Oracle young enterprise challenge, has now been trading one year as a hairdresser in Abingdon Street market. He said ‘Setting up a business doesn’t need to be difficult. With help and support from people that take an interest in you, belief in your ability and some hard work, anything is possible. One year on and I have had nearly 2,000 clients, make a good living and enjoy every day. My advice to anyone thinking of starting a business to contact Get Started and explore the opportunity self-employment can provide.’ To find out more about how you could “Get Started” in business, call Blackpool Council on 01253 477147

Blackpool News
Youngsters praised for Commonwealth success A group of Blackpool youngsters have been praised for their successful participation in the Commonwealth Youth Dance Festival in Glasgow.
The Fylde Coast Youth Dance Company, a group consisting of 19 young dancers between the ages of 12 and 19 from Blackpool and Fylde, were one of only eight youth dance groups from across England, Wales and Northern Ireland to be chosen to take part in the festival, a part of the Commonwealth Games celebrations. They joined more than 400 dancers from 10 countries for three days of workshops and performances celebrating the vibrancy of dance within Commonwealth countries as part of the build up to Glasgow 2014. And now, after a successful trip, they have spoken out about their experiences. One dancer, Lauren Fail, 19, said ‘These past few days in Glasgow have been so ridiculously amazing and I feel so lucky to have spent it with the most incredible people. I’ll never forget all the amazing experiences I’ve had and the people I have met. My favourite part was being able to participate in workshops of different styles with people from all over the world that had very different dance experiences. It was amazing to see how these dancers came together to create work even when their styles were so different. It was also really interesting to learn about their cultures when talking to the other dancers.’ The Saturday night performance which the company starred in was a complete sell out and the youngsters received a standing ovation for their efforts. Cllr Christine Wright, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for culture and heritage, said the company were showing just what Blackpool children can achieve. She said: ‘The Commonwealth Games is a huge event for the UK and we’re all looking forward to the action getting underway. But, like many major
sporting festivals, it has also brought together a host of cultural activities, especially for young people, and this is a prime example. The dancers did Blackpool proud by being selected and it sounds like they have had a magnificent time and learned a lot. This just shows what children from Blackpool can achieve through hard work and with the right support and guidance.’ This selection comes at the end of the company’s successful first year of operation. Formed in July 2013, the company have also performed at the U Dance North West, a regional platform taking place at The Lowry and the Lancashire Youth Dance Festival, run by Ludus Dance in May. They meet every fortnight, led by local dance artist Leanne Kirkham, developing their dance technique and creative practice, learning how to create their own performance work and working with professional choreographers and dance companies to inspire them further. Auditions will be held for the next intake of the company will take place in September 2014. For more details, please visit www.fyldecoastdance. wordpress.com. The company is funded through the Dance Development programme which is managed by Blackpool Council and is supported by National Lottery through Arts Council England, Blackpool Council, Wyre Council and Lancashire County Council.

The isolation unit plays a very crucial part at the animal centre as it keeps new arrivals away from all the current healthy animals that are up for homing. This is in case of any infection which might be brought in by a new arrival and then spread on to healthy animals. Blackpool News Lucy Bicket and PC John Crystal with the winning entry
The poster child for crime! A nine year old school girl is set to become the poster child for crime in Blackpool – but in a good way! Lucy Bicket, who attends Bispham Endowed Primary School, will help crack crime after her poster was chosen as the winning entry in a council competition to warn people to avoid becoming a victim. The youngsters were asked to design a poster to be used in the local area to get across a key message – that 50 per cent of all robberies, burglaries and thefts happen, in part, because vehicles and buildings are left unlocked. Sheds, garages and cars have all been targeted in recent months by opportunist thieves who have found a welcoming easy access, allowing them to steal whatever they wanted. Blackpool Council has been working with Blackpool Police to try to help make the local community in Bispham aware of the problem. Cllr Gillian Campbell, Blackpool Council cabinet member for public safety, said: ‘Lucy has done very well with her poster and can be very proud of her work. It will be used all over the area to try to get across the message. There is a serious point here – the police are concerned that people are making it easy for criminals to carry out crimes of this type – simply by leaving their cars 26
and buildings unlocked. We want to urge people not to get caught out and lock up before they leave!’ Inspector Louise Ainsworth, from Lancashire Police, said ‘This was an ideal opportunity to raise awareness with the children to influence their parents and perhaps grandparents to be more security conscious. As well as designing the poster, the children had a security checklist to take home that highlighted ways to makes sheds more difficult to target. Lucy’s poster gave a very clear message to the Bispham community not to make theft easy for opportunist criminals.’ And Head teacher, Jo Hirst, said: ‘We were very pleased to be involved in the recent poster competition. We encourage all our children to think about safety and security as part of our schools safeguarding procedures. Lucy was delighted to be chosen as the competition winner and we look forward to seeing her posters around the Bispham area.’ If you have any concerns about crime, call the police on 101 or, in an emergency, 999.

Blackpool News
Don’t Stop The Music! Blackpool Music Academy, helping everyone get a chance to learn to play Blackpool Music Academy was formed in 2006 by John Shaw & Jim Lomas. Its purpose is to offer the community of Blackpool and the Fylde, the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument at a minimal cost. All the tutors are highly qualified music professionals. They have different teaching styles but all are delivered in a very friendly way, making it the perfect place to learn an instrument. Offering group sessions and one-one sessions at the academy, as well as one-one sessions in your own home if you are disabled and unable to get to them. They offer affordable music tuition for any age from 8 yrs upwards and provide a variety of different musicical instruments including keyboard, saxophone, drums, banjo, singing lessons, music theory, guitar and many more. They endeavor to keep their costs minimal allowing the academy to offer value-for-money tuition, for those on low incomes, disabled, young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, children excluded from full-time education and children who unable to cope with busy classrooms. The friendly calm environments make it perfect for learning in an informal way, allowing students to embrace all the advantages that the therapy of music can give. After having been established at Springfield Methodist Church in 2006, John Shaw decided to relocate the academy to its own premises and with the help of Roy White and the social enterprise loan fund, took possession of a former insurance brokers on Waterloo Rd in South Shore. The premises were derelict and required a lot of work to bring it up to scratch inside and out as well as a total refit. It also needed work to comply with health & safety and fire regulations. The building costs would be enormous and so with finances stretched to the limit, John decided to make some phone calls to seek some free legal advice about the mortgage. He phoned over twenty solicitors and one after another declined to help or simply return his call until he got a positive response from Banks Carrington Solicitors on Edward St in Blackpool town centre. Not only did they give John the free advice he
was seeking but also helped him set up the mortgage agreement and waived the legal fees. Boosted by this act of generosity, John’s belief in human kindness was restored and he went on a mission to approach local businesses to appeal for any products, materials and labour to help transform his new premises into an academy to be proud of. Undeterred and unfazed, John walked straight into various businesses and respectfully asked for any contribution, small or large, to help his good cause. To his amazement, 45 local businesses generously donated to John’s academy at cost only or completely free of charge to the tune of approximately £45,000! On the back of this overwhelming support from the local business community, the Blackpool Music Academy opened its doors at the Waterloo Rd site in June 2012. Included in the academy is a conference room with projector, stair lift, disabled toilet and Phil’s Coffee Shop dedicated to Phil Roberts, the BMA’s deceased former tutor who helped so much in making the academy the success that it is. Phil died of leukaemia in May 2011. Such was Phil’s dedication to the academy, he was still teaching his students two days up to his death. The Music Academy is holding an open day on Saturday 30th August 2014 at 10pm, with face painting, raffles, bouncy castles, food and of course, instrument try outs. It is located at 420 Waterloo Road, Blackpool. Further information can be found at www. blackpoolmusicacademy.com or by phoning 01253 695398
