Preparation Over a medium heat, place the flour in a pan, add a little of lukewarm stock and mix well. Pour over ½ of the boiling stock and stir well until all the lumps have disappeared. Carry on adding more stock and cooking until the desired thickness is reached. Add the cranberry sauce, nutmeg and a little honey, adjust the seasoning. Add the sauce to the turkey and vegetables and gently mix. At this stage you can add spinach, cabbage and/or watercress. Pour in an ovenproof dish. Season the sweet potatoes with the spices of your choice add the cheese if used and place over your pie. Decorate with the garlic and thyme before cooking in a preheated oven 160°C for 25-30 minutes or until the pie is piping hot and the topping is light golden.

SAVE AS YOU

By Hannah Stephenson

PRESENTS, FOOD, DECORATION, ENTERTAINING - IT ALL ADDS UP. AND WHILE MOST OF US LOVE THE FESTIVITIES OF CHRISTMAS, THE EXTRA COST CAN CAUSE HEADACHES.

moneynet.co.uk advises setting a budget and sticking to it that way you'll have everything you need without the stress of overloaded credit cards once January rolls in. It might sound like a horrible task, but making a budget plan is actually quite easy. Just decide what you're going to buy, make a list and stick to it. Don't be tempted by those goodies on offer, that sale rack you're walking past or the tasty little treats at the checkout. And don't try to keep up with the neighbours, either. You'll only end up spending too much. shopping online, can work wonders for your stress levels, as you'll avoid all the busy, bustling shops and whether or not that musthave toy will actually be in stock or not. It also helps you to avoid temptation so that sale bargain simply can't fall into your basket unless you really want it to!

 Ask yourself how big the turkey really needs to be. You just need enough to feed the family and friends around your Christmas table, with a little left over for sandwiches on Boxing Day.

Don't go mad with luxury range Christmas items such as puds. People won't be that bothered if they don't see the wrapper. It's worth keeping an eye out for special offers and stocking up as and when you see the deals. Go shopping with a friend for things like big tins of chocolates. They're often on 'buy one get one free' offers so you can split the cost and share the savings. It's a good idea to buy wine in bulk as well. Lots of supermarkets offer extra discount if you buy six bottles. You can also print off discount food 16

vouchers at www.myvouchercodes. co.uk to save extra money - and don't  be afraid to ask anyone joining you    for lunch to be in charge of one part  of the meal. They'll enjoy feeling like   they've helped and you'll save some    pennies in the process. 

                      Those with toddlers should explore charity shops for quality second-hand toys in good condition. Clean them up, wrap them in Christmas paper and they'll never notice the difference. Toddlers are often far more interested in the wrapping paper anyway! For older children, splash out on a board game. It'll keep them entertained over the winter and will also occupy the whole family on Christmas Day.

And if that Christmas card list is making you feel guilty, send e-cards instead. It's more eco-friendly and you'll save money on cards and stamps. Or alternatively you could get the kids involved in making some. It's also worth taking advantage of the 'three for two' deals on offer in many shops. Marks & Spencer and Boots have an enormous range suitable for the whole family - you'll be amazed how the savings can add up. Advertise Call 0800 970 7687

Blackpool beats recycling record Blackpool residents are recycling more than ever before, according to new figures. The latest statistics show that 39.6% of the rubbish that is thrown away in Blackpool is now recycled, up 1.4% from last year. That’s the equivalent of 25,000 tonnes of waste, roughly the weight of 6000 elephants and almost ten Blackpool Towers, which is able to be reused, recycled or composted. This increase in recycling continues the upward trend in recycling in Blackpool that has seen the rate increase from 17.8% in 2005 to the figure achieved in 2012/13. On top of this, only 12% of what is being recycled is green garden waste, meaning that the amounts of paper, bottles and cans that are being recycled by the public is an even greater achievement. All in all, it shows that Blackpool is getting greener, says the councillor in charge of waste Cllr Gillian Campbell, Cabinet Member for Housing, Public Protection and Street Scene, said: ‘These new figures make excellent reading We are continuously looking at ways that we can make Blackpool greener and more eco-friendly and I’m delighted that residents are buying in to that message. Rather than just dumping their rubbish, Blackpool locals are taking the time to

look after the environment and separate their waste to make sure that it can be recycled. We all need to do our bit to reduce the waste that goes to landfill and I’m proud that our residents are taking the lead to make Blackpool a greener place.’ Local residents are also being recycling conscious with their bulky waste. Over the last 12 months, the Bulky Matters partnership has refurbished over 100 tonnes worth of large items such as beds and sofas with over 50% being reused in the local community. To order a bulky collection, residents can ring 477477, with prices starting from £18 for the removal of three items. Visit www.blackpool.gov.uk/bulkymatters to find out more.

CHRISTMAS Speak to friends and relatives and agree a limit as to how much you're going to spend on each other and each other's kids. If you have a big family, maybe only buy for the children - adults aren't going to mind when money's tight. You can save even more by making your own presents - and friends and family will love the personal touch. Try knitting a scarf, cook or bake something delicious and tie it up with a beautiful bow, or ask one of the children to paint a masterpiece and have it framed.

  Get the kids involved with making the Christmas decorations this year. Dig out glitter and shiny paper from old craft boxes in the toy cupboard or stock up on tinsel, glue and paper chains from Poundland. Try sewing popcorn on to thread for a rustic mantelpiece decoration or scour your local park for pine cones and use them as decorations at the base of candles or in pot pourri - you can even jazz them up with gold or silver spray.

18

Let the little ones help make your own edible decorations, such as gingerbread Santas or star-shaped biscuits decorated with edible silver beads. They'll look fantastically festive and will keep children happy when they're in need of a sweet treat!  You may have splashed out on festive outdoor lights - but don't leave them on all night! Just a couple of hours in the evening will do, to get everyone in the mood. Inside, replace regular lights with energy saving ones. LED lights use less energy than conventional Christmas ones.

                   

If you want to go out, head for the nearest green space or beach to blow the cobwebs away on Christmas Day. Your library should list local walks and other events to keep the family amused. Try not to let your heating bill blow the budget: Turn your thermostat down by one degree. It may not sound like much but could cut your heating bills by up to 10 per cent. Keep the curtains closed when you go to bed to keep the heat in and use draught excluders by the front door to keep the cold air out.

Look for budget family days out with English Heritage (englishheritage.org.uk) too, where kids can listen to storytellers or take part in Christmas craft making. Alternatively, if you can't stand the thought of cooking, find a half-price restaurant meal deal from toptable.co.uk and let someone else worry about the washing up!

Keep the Grinch at bay this Christmas! CHRISTMAS TREES DECKED WITH BAUBLES AND LADEN WITH PRESENTS ARE A LOVELY SIGHT, ESPECIALLY FOR BURGLARS, SO IT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER TO MAKE SURE YOUR HOME IS SECURE AT THIS TIME OF YEAR.

During the whirlwind of Christmas shopping trips, festive activities and frequent visitors home security can slip and, as a consequence, burglaries increase by up to 20% over the winter months. With this in mind, the security experts at Yale have come up with some seasonal advice to stop the Grinch stealing your Christmas.

WHO’S AT THE DOOR? ‘Tis the season to be jolly and with more frequent visits from family and friends, as well as the odd carol singer, Yale recommends you look through your front door ‘spy hole’ and enable the door chain before swinging it open. Only release the chain if you are satisfied that the person at the door is really who they say they are and have identification to prove the purpose of their visit – if you are unsure, keep them out. For the latest in security technology, Yale’s recording digital door viewer has a built in camera so you can take still pictures of anyone who is at the door if you are unsure of their motives..

RAISE THE ALARM As well as visiting loved ones at Christmas more of us are enjoying winter breaks, so it’s important to make sure your home is protected while you’re away. Home alarms act as the perfect ‘security guard’, watching over your property while you’re not there. Alarms act as visual deterrents to potential burglars and are vital for alerting neighbours in the event of a break-in. Yale’s Easy Fit Alarm kits are quick and easy to install, and offer discreet protection for all types of properties, from flats to large family homes. Make sure all doors and windows are fitted with secure locks in line with British standards. External timber

20

doors should be secured using a mortice lock and/or nightlatch approved to BS3621:2007 and if you have a PVCu or composite door then it is a good idea to upgrade the euro profile cylinder in your multi-point lock to the British Standard TS007 as well (look for the Kitemark on lock packs and on the lock itself). Locks are also available for all types of windows, including wooden, aluminium and PVCu, as well as French doors and patio doors.

To protect yourself, keep your gift receipts in a home safe that’s bolted securely to the floor or wall.

THE WOW FACTOR

Isabel and Mark Spencer explain how Robert Pallant Designs gave their new kitchen the wow factor. Photography: TVPAV.com

A

Poulton couple turned to Robert Pallant Designs for a second time to design and fit their new kitchen. When Isabel and Mark Spencer decided to move to a new home in 2010, their first task was to extend the kitchen area, and as smart shoppers they decided to collect quotes from a selection of different companies. “We’d used Robert Pallant before on a previous kitchen and his work was fantastic, but we thought it wise to shop around to see what else was on the market. When it came down to it, Robert’s

design and quote were far superior. Robert was the only designer who took our ideas and developed them using his expertise. The others simply recreated them,” said Isabel. Working with a monochrome colour palette in black and white high gloss with a large island unit, a white Corian worktop and a stunning floating glass-backed breakfast bar in star galaxy granite, the couple’s kitchen creates a real wow factor, making it the highlight of their beautiful home. But as enjoyable as the design process was, it wasn’t without its complications. Isabel explained: “Mark had his heart set on handleless units, but with high gloss black cupboards, I had concerns about finger marks. Robert presented us with a solution in subtle grip-ledge stainless steel handles, which look great and make maintaining the kitchen’s shine a whole lot easier. “We also had an issue with the placement of the extractor fan due to the fact that a skylight meant

The smart extractor fan is by De Dietrich, with the rest of Isabel and Mark’s new appliances being sourced by Robert from Siemens. Robert Pallant also planned the kitchen’s impressive lighting, which complements the room perfectly. On installing the new units and appliances, Isabel said: “The fitting of the kitchen was the easy bit when it came to the extension as a whole. The twins, who actually fitted our old kitchen, did a perfect job and Robert popped in on

Stand out and stay safe on the roads this winter Wearing the right clothing could help save your life on the roads this winter. That’s the message from road safety experts at Blackpool Council this month after the clocks went back and the nights get longer. Campaigners say the number of people injured on the roads always increases at this time of year. For example, last year collisions went up from by more than 10 per cent (from 61 to 71) in September. In other years, there have been even higher increases. In 2009 collisions almost doubled, rising from 54 to 101. As a result, campaigners have stressed that, particularly for cyclists and pedestrians, wearing an item of bright clothing could help avoid accidents and even save lives.

‘The darker nights can take some getting used to for pedestrians and drivers alike and our road safety team have a few key messages that they want to stress. Firstly, by only wearing black or dark clothing you are putting yourself at risk. Pedestrians and cyclists can help themselves to be seen on the roads by wearing white or reflective clothing at night and bright or fluorescent clothing in the daytime. Drivers should also be aware of the change in conditions; ensuring they look twice for cyclists and are extra cautious around schools or in built up areas where children may be playing. The correct use of lights and not waiting until it is fully dark to turn them on is also vital as the nights draw in.’ The warning comes as Blackpool Council launches their annual winter gritting drive “Operation Snowdrop” gets underway. Officers are now on standby to hit the streets overnight and help keep Blackpool’s roads safe and are monitoring winter weather on an hour-by-hour basis. Posters for this year’s “Be Safe, Be Seen” campaign are now going up around the town to remind all road users about ensuring they stand out. Road safety officers will also be touring primary and secondary schools in the coming weeks to encourage children to get the message.

Talbot Road Car Park

Cllr Fred Jackson, Cllr John Jones and Paolo Pertica

Cllr John Jones and Cllr Fred Jackson cut the ribbon to re-open Talbot Road Multi-Storey car park

Refurbished car park re-opens Blackpool’s refurbished Talbot Road multi-storey car park is now open. Part of Blackpool Council’s Talbot Gateway Central Business District regeneration scheme, the car park had been a tired, outdated-looking building and concerns had been raised about security. But now, following a huge transformation, the building is now a stunning, modern and secure 650 space facility fit for the twenty first century Re-clad in high quality materials to create a glass and stainless steel façade, the interior has been finished to the highest modern standards. A new “pay on foot” payment system has been introduced which, rather than customers buying time for limited periods, will allow people maximum flexibility to shop, explore and have fun. And there will be places for visitors to explore within the building itself with a number of retail units on the ground floor. The largest unit will be occupied by Mr Basrai’s World Buffet and Bar with other tenants set to be named in the coming months. Cllr John Jones, Blackpool Council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: ‘The Talbot Road multi-storey car park has been transformed into a modern and secure facility. It will provide key spaces for visitors to the Talbot Gateway Central Business District and the surrounding area and is a major upgrade.’ Cllr Fred Jackson, Blackpool Council’s cabinet 26

member for urban regeneration, who is responsible for the Talbot Gateway CBD scheme, said: ‘This is the first step of the Talbot Gateway Central Business District development to be completed. While there are further challenges ahead with the opening of the office building and the Sainsbury’s store, which are both progressing well, I’m delighted that we’ve completed the first hurdle successfully.’ While some trimming and snagging work will still be being completed next week, the work will not prevent the car park from being fully operational for the half-term break. The car park, built in partnership with Tolent, will be open between 7am and midnight and costs £1.50 an hour with discounts on a sliding scale for long stay parking. The £220 million Talbot Gateway Central Business District scheme, being created in conjunction with the council’s development partner, Muse Developments, will create new retail, commercial and community space for Blackpool in addition to town centre parking and transport facilities. This also includes a new public square, offices, restaurants, retail units and a new supermarket. It is expected to be completed in full by summer 2014 and further tenants are expected to be confirmed soon by joint letting agents Montagu Evans LLP and Duxburys Commercial. Playground dream moves one step closer A £60,000 grant has been secured towards the cost of an animal-themed upgrade to Stanley Park’s young children’s playground.

The plans, revealed earlier this year, will see the Friends of Stanley Park and Blackpool Council team up to revitalise the area, aimed at 2-8 year olds. And now, thanks to SITA’s Enhancing Communities Funding Programme, the team are one step closer to making the dream a reality. Cllr Graham Cain, Blackpool Council cabinet member for leisure and tourism, said: ‘This is fantastic news which brings us closer to making the work happen. This is a very exciting time for Stanley Park and I’m very hopeful that we will be able to secure more funding to enable us to make a start soon.’

And Marek Gordon CEO and Chairman of SITA Trust added: ‘We are delighted to have been able to support this project through the Landfill Communities Fund. This important source of funding has been available since 1997 and has provided such worthy projects with more than £1.2 billion.’ SITA Trust provides funding through the Landfill Communities Fund. Funding is available for projects that enhance communities and enrich nature. Containing modern versions of playground classics such as rocking horses, see saws, slides, swings and roundabouts, the designs will have a safari theme, including a lion’s head slide. Multiple pieces of equipment will be grouped together so that children can play together, encouraging team work and sharing. Colourful graphics will also be incorporated into the surfacing to include snakes and ladders, hopscotch and caterpillar. A public consultation earlier this year revealed widespread support for the plans. The group now need to raise around £70,000 to complete the project.

Elaine Smith, chairman of the Friends of Stanley Park, said: ‘The old playground is very much in need of some repair and we think this animal-themed design is a fabulous concept to improve it. It’s fantastic that we are one step closer to making it a reality.’

Ramp up the RED The British Heart Foundation is the nation’s heart charity, dedicated to saving lives. As a charity, we rely on collections, donations and fundraising events to continue with our vital work. February is Heart Month and we are asking everyone to take a stand against the UK’s biggest killer by supporting our Ramp Up The Red campaign. On Friday 7 February 2014 we are asking people across the UK to hold a fundraising event, and simply encourage colleagues, pupils or friends to do something red to raise money for our work. This could be a “Red Party”, Wear Red, Red fancy dress, anything red. We’d love you to be involved - visit www.bhf.org.uk/red to order a free pack today! it’s full of fundraising ideas and everything you need to set up your very own “Ramp up the Red” event. If you can’t do it on the 7th Feb then it’s fine to do it on the nearest convenient day.

Last year the BHF invested more than £88m in heart research, the equivalent to £157 a minute. Sadly coronary heart disease is the UK’s single biggest killer, with 2.3 million people living with heart disease today. It’s only with generous donations of time and money that we can save more lives. Together we can take on the enormous challenge of beating heart disease for good.
