NORTH MAGAZINE 20,000 Copies Per Month As the March Hare gets left behind us, and we run with a hop, skip and a jump into April with the Easter Bunny, most of us will either be celebrating for the true reason we mark the Easter holiday – or just for chocolate! Either way, enjoy your break. We had a ‘Good’ Friday before we went to print with another record month over the same period last year. The local economy is getting better, and it’s great to hear that lots of businesses we have spoken to are busy with work. Don’t forget our magazines are also online every month at www. link-mag.co.uk. If you need to check out any events, or local businesses, you can do so even before you receive a copy through your door. We have a new product to advertise your business locally: For a DL size flyer printed, designed and delivered to 10,000 doors on 130gsm quality paper it will cost just £175 plus VAT. Ask us now to book you in for our first discounted flyer! Well done to last month’s winners: Muriel Roberts for the Where Am I? Competition - £50 is on its way and to Lesley Tague 2 Tickets to a Night of Dirty Dancing.

arrangements at short notice during a very difficult time for them - emotionally & financially. With a pre-paid funeral plan, the cost of which is frozen at today’s price, you are protected against inflation and any other price increase, no matter how much they rise in the future.

Established in 1989, they are the only fully qualified, truly independent funeral directors in Thornton, Cleveleys & Fleetwood, and deliver a personal service with both professionalism and dignity.

It reassures you loved ones that your wishes will be recorded and carried out, and allows them to grieve during a most difficult period of time.

Dying is certainty of life, but it still remains a subject which some feel difficult to talk about. It means that, more often than not, funeral arrangements aren’t discussed or made in advance.

It also means that your family doesn’t have to worry about the money for your funeral to be paid for, it has already been taken care of.

For more information on our pre-paid funeral plans, please telephone our office and we will send you more information or alternatively call This can, unfortunately mean wishes aren’t always met, and grieving families need to make in for a chat in person, the kettle is always on.

Historic features uncovered as new bar opens at Winter Gardens Blackpool A stunning art nouveau feature of the Winter Gardens, dating back to 1896, has been uncovered as part of work to re-open a bar within the complex. The Theatre Bar, formerly known as Bar Red, has been closed for five years as part of the extensive refurbishment work taking place to the Winter Gardens building. It re-opened this weekend. And as part of the work to open up that area of the Winter Gardens complex, nine ornate panels which date back to just before the turn of twentieth century have also been revealed. The tiled panels feature a range of ladies in exotic costumes set in groups of two separated by a mirror and are situated in an area of the Empress Buildings which was originally the vaulted entrance hall to the Empress Ballroom from Church Street. The 15 known names of the panels – part of a set of 28 – were those of semi-precious stones, birds or butterflies and were created by Doulton’s (now Royal Doulton) on commission with design by their leading artist W. J. Neatby*. Surrounding the panels were multi-coloured tiles and the vaulted ceiling was said to have featured ‘varied designs in rich and harmonious colours, with mermaids and conventional treatment of seaweed and fishes’. The increased footfall of the present Opera House, built in 1938-39, necessitated the removal of panels at the rear of the hall. Then the vaulted ceiling was removed to create offices on the first floor. Only 12 of the panels survive. For many years, 11 of them could be seen in Brown & Mallalieu’s car showroom, but they were carefully covered over in 1972 when the premises became a shoe shop. In 2010 when Blackpool Council purchased the Winter Gardens the tiles were 20

discovered and have now been renovated and incorporated into the refurbishment of the room. The restoration of the bar and the panels are part of the wider work to put back many of the Winter Gardens’ original features which was set in motion after the building was brought back into public ownership. It has since played host to an incredible array of acts including Bob Dylan and a full summer season of the incredible Mamma Mia! which smashed all box office records. Cllr Christine Wright, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for culture and heritage, said: ‘Safeguarding the heritage and history of the Winter Gardens was our primary aim when we purchased the complex back in 2010. Painstaking, detailed work has been done since then to restore and safeguard many aspects of the building and this is another example of that. The tiles look truly stunning and I must credit all involved for saving a piece of Blackpool’s heritage.’ And Cllr Graham Cain, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for tourism and leisure, said: ‘We always refer to the Winter Gardens as one of the jewels in Blackpool’s crown and this is just another example of why. The incredible architectural quality and detail that was incorporated into the original design is a part of the fabric of what makes the building so special. We absolutely had to safeguard that and we’re incredibly proud of having been able to do so. We hope residents and visitors will recognise and enjoy these fabulous features and really take in the stunning detail of the Winter Gardens building which we’re working so hard to protect.’

Little Marton Windmill Receives Its Blue Plaque Blackpool heritage champion Shirley Mathews saw her dream come true on Sunday when Clifton ward councillors Luke Taylor and Adrian Hutton unveiled a blue heritage plaque on the windmill. Shirley has worked for many years promoting the grade 2 listed building which is also a memorial to her grandfather, local author Allen Clarke. With the help of her Friends group Shirley now opens the building to the public one day a month throughout the summer months. It is also available for visits by schools and scout groups. The interior of the mill houses original nineteenth century machinery. Additional displays have been installed explaining the practicalities of milling and the extent of historic windmills throughout the Fylde. 22

Local Employee Named Finalist At National Mcdonald’s Environment Awards Blackpool employee picks up finalist prize for their contribution to the local environment A local McDonald’s employee from the Amy Johnson Way restaurant in Blackpool has picked up a finalist prize at the company’s UK-wide Planet Champion Awards in recognition of the positive impact they have made on the environment and to their local community. For the third year in a row, Planet Champion, Stacey McLeod organised a large scale ‘Love Where You Live’ event across a four-mile stretch of the Blackpool Sand Dune in last summer. This saw over 40 McDonald’s staff and employees from other restaurants in the local area teaming up to clear the dunes of unsightly litter and encourage the local community to take pride in the area. Stacey has also played a major role in helping improve recycling at the restaurant, reducing the amount of waste to being sent to landfill from the restaurant by providing specialised training and coaching to the restaurant team. Stacey is one of 2,500 McDonald’s Planet Champions from across the UK who help raise awareness of environmental issues and encourage others to become more environmentally friendly at work and in their local area. The annual McDonald’s Planet Champion Awards celebrate the hard work and commitment these employees have made to tackling environmental issues and engaging with their local communities. Commenting on her success, Stacey said: ‘It’s extremely rewarding to be

recognised for my efforts and contribution to my local environment. I’ve always been environmentally conscious and the Planet Champion programme has provided me with the platform and opportunity to make a real difference both at work and in my community, and create a positive impact locally. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the work I’ve done so far and look forward to embarking on further projects in the future.’ McDonald’s franchisees and regional staff nominate Planet Champions for their innovation and creativity within one or more of the four key areas: energy, recycling, litter and community engagement. From there, entries are critiqued and eight candidates chosen to proceed to the finals where two overall winners were selected. Local McDonald’s Operations Consultant Mike Wallace added: ‘I’m extremely proud of Stacey’s success and the work she has done to positively impact our local community and environment. Recognising McDonald’s Planet Champions for their hard work is a brilliant way of encouraging others to work with fellow employees and local community members to find ways to continually evoke positive environmental change.’ For more information about the work of McDonald’s Planet Champions, please visit www.mcdonalds.co.uk/ukhome/ whatmakesmcdonalds/articles/planetchampion.html

Instant join for sports centres

Residents can now make the most of Blackpool’s top class leisure facilities at just the click of a button Blackpool Council’s new ‘Join at Home’ feature now allows any potential gym goers to sign up to a leisure membership online. The move makes it easier than ever for local residents to start getting active. Cllr Graham Cain, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for leisure and tourism said: ‘In today’s world, where everybody wants everything immediately, it seemed old fashioned to expect people to have to come to the leisure centres to sign up to a new membership. The new ‘Join at Home’ system means that people can start their membership at anytime from anywhere, on their computers at home, or even on their phones and tablets. All four of our leisure centres are excellent quality. We’ve just upgraded the facilities at Moor Park and Palatine while the brand new Gateway

Fitness gym in the town centre is state of the art. In addition to them, Blackpool Sports Centre offers a range of activities for everybody.’ To sign up, visit www.sportblackpool. co.uk and click on the membership tab.

New park planned for Central Drive

Work has begun on a new park to brighten up one of Blackpool’s most densely populated areas The new £40,000 playground is being built on the ground outside Ibbison Court. The project is being carried out by Blackpool Council and Groundwork and will include a slide, swings and a climbing wall. Cllr Graham Cain, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for leisure and tourism is also one of the local councillors for Bloomfield ward. He said: ‘Blackpool is a densely populated town at the best of times, and around Central Drive it is probably more enclosed than anywhere else. This park will help to improve the look of Central Drive, making it greener and more colourful and we think that it could help to make it nicer for families and the local businesses too. The investment will cover the installation of the new equipment as well as committing to maintaining the park in the coming years. Part of the reason why we are doing this work is to make that area safer and more enjoyable for everybody who lives nearby and I am looking forward to seeing the finished product.’ Local ward councillor for Bloomfield ward, Cllr John Jones, added: ‘Everybody knows that Central Drive needs a bit of lift – it’s no secret. 24

Cllr John Jones and Cllr Graham Cain at the building of a new playground by Ibbison Court

Whenever I speak to local people they mention the area and ask what we can do to clear it up and make it nicer. Hopefully this will have a really positive impact on the local area and that local families can enjoy. The playground and park tie in nicely with the new community planting garden at the back of Ibbison Court too. All of these things help the community foster a pride in the local area, which will hopefully bring its own benefits and encourage people to continue to look after the area in the future.’ Mike Crowther, Groundwork’s Director of Communities said; ‘We believe it’s really important for everyone to be part of a community where people enjoy living and working together. This project will not only improve the appearance of the local area but also provide a range of opportunities to improve your overall health and wellbeing.’

Local RSPCA News Fundraising Events

There is an Easter event and egg hunt on Saturday 4th April, from 1am to 3pm at the RSPCA Animal Centre, Old Toms Lane, Stalmine, FY6 0JR See our new centre and attend one of our animal awareness workshops. Activities include an Egg Hunt, Pie & Peas, Coffee/ Tea Van, Face Painting, Easter Raffle, Paint an egg, Name the cat tombola, Microchipping, Cake stall, Jewellery stall. Fun for all the family and helping to raise money for the animals in our care. On April 19th there is a sponsored Dog walk in Garstang from 10:30am for two hours roughly, starting at the Millenium Mosaic. Ring or email the centre for a sponsor form or for more information. On April 10th there are free micro chipping sessions at D&J Petshop on Bond Street, Blackpool FY4 1BW We are a self supporting, independently registered charity and are here to provide care for animals which have been rescued or collected by the RSPCA Inspectors. These animals have often been mistreated, abused, neglected or abandoned by their owners. We have continuing costs to support the new rehoming centre. The day to day care of these animals and the increasing veterinary bills incurred before they can go to new homes is a huge cost to the branch. We are hoping that your business will kindly consider supporting us by sponsoring a kennel or cat pen. If you join the scheme you will be given a certificate of thanks, your company name and logo will be displayed at the animal centre and you will receive our two annual newsletters. If you are a UK taxpayer, the RSPCA can now reclaim the tax on your donation, making your gift even more significant. We would be so grateful for your support and if you require any further information about our sponsorship scheme please contact the centre. Can you offer this lady a loving foster home? Raven was rescued by one of the RSPCA Inspectors after she was found

Raven as a stray in a poor condition. She is an independent lady who is on the look out for a quiet home without children and where she will be the only pet. She does need an understanding owner who will take the time to build up a bond with her. Raven does like to be stroked and is becoming much more tolerant since she arrived at the centre in December. As we don’t have any history on her, we are unsure of exactly old she is but are estimating her to be 7 to 10 years old. When Raven was found, she had a skin condition which has since improved but an old injury to one of her back legs means she doesn’t walk like your average although she is not in any pain with it. We do believe that she is quite stressed and unhappy in the cattery so think a permanent foster home would be ideal for her. A permanent foster home means that the branch will cover any medical costs and will ensure that booster vaccinations, flea treatment and wormers are also provided. If you believe you can offer this lady a home or have any questions then please contact the animal centre on 01253 703000. Further info and to donate online at www.rspcablackpool. org.uk. Win tickets to see UB40 announce further UK tour dates for 2015 due to massive demand

Following their sold-out UK tour of 2014, reggae stars UB40 have announced nineteen further dates in May and June. The Brummie legends recently completed the second leg of their ‘Getting Over The Storm’ tour, which has seen UK’s most successful reggae band play over forty UK shows to over 100,000 fans. UB40’s 2015 UK tour dates, which start at Motherwell Concert Hall on Monday 4th and end at Doncaster Racecourse on Saturday 6th June, continues the band’s preference to avoid arena venues in the UK, as founding member and principal songwriter Brian Travers explains: ‘The success of this years tour has confirmed what we already knew, that it’s better to play to 100,000 people across forty intimate venues across the whole of the country rather than playing to the same number of people at six enormous domes in the same cities. It’s a much better experience for both the band and our fans, and we get to play in towns and cities we haven’t visited for many years.’ Fellow UB40 founding member and principal songwriter Jimmy Brown agrees: ‘The atmosphere in the venues on our current tour has been amazing. You can feel it from the stage and it lifts the band to a different level. You rarely get that in an arena. We’re never happier than when we are on stage; we are a working band, it’s what we do.’ To be in with a chance of winning 2 fantastic tickets, simply answer this question correctly: Where does the band name UB40 come from? Answer Name Address Tel No Email Post your Answer to: LINK-Magazine 32 Rowntree Ave, Fleetwood, Lancashire FY7 7HE

Or enter Online at www.link-mag.co.uk

The success of the tour is bound to rankle with UB40’s former lead singer Ali Campbell, who has repeatedly attempted to discredit his former bandmates since he walked out on them in 2008. UB40 founding member Robin Campbell said: ‘Ali has been shamelessly attempting to pass himself off as a “reformed UB40” since the start of 2014, which has confused many of our fans, the media and concert promoters all over the world. We’ve had to issue writs against Ali and two other former members. If they want to be UB40 so badly they should never have chosen to leave UB40 in the first place.’ UB40 formed in 1978, before releasing their debut album ‘Signing Off’ in August 1980, considered by many to be one of the greatest reggae albums ever released by a British band. It was the start of a career that has since seen the band have over forty UK Top 40 hit singles and achieve sales of over 100 million records, making UB40 one of the most successful British groups of all time. The band’s latest Top 30 album ‘Getting Over The Storm’ was awarded BBC Radio 2’s ‘Album Of The Week’ accolade and received 5-star reviews from the UK’s music press on its release in September 2013. UB40 play Blackpool’s Winter Gardens Opera House on Friday 22nd May. Tickets are on sale now and available from www.ub40. co.uk, www.wintergardensblackpool.co.uk or call the booking line on 0844 856 1111

Blackpool’s exciting new high ropes adventure course at Stanley Park is beginning to take shape. Experts from JMA Adventure are currently building the eleven metre high structure on land next to Blackpool Sports Centre. The course, which is set to be fun, physical and perfect for team building exercises, educational trips, birthday parties and even just a fun day out, is due to be completed in late April and will open soon afterwards once testing and training is complete. As well as the challenging eight metre high ropes course, there will also be a four metre high “low ropes” course, for participants with less of a head for heights. Fearless participants will face challenges from flying down a zip wire into a cargo net and scaling a rock climbing wall to traversing swinging tyres, a series of challenging bridges and obstacles and an exciting “leap of faith”. Prices will start from just £8 per person and a range of packages will be available, including: Team building and corporate packages for local businesses, Curricular and extra-curricular

activities for schools and colleges, Skill development and team building packages for youth and community groups and Birthday parties for younger and older people. The facility is suitable for anyone aged 5 years and up.

High ropes adventure course takes shape

Cllr Graham Cain, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for leisure and tourism, who visited the site to check on progress this week, said: ‘The build stage looks to be going extremely well and the construction is now really taking shape. This is an incredibly exciting project and one which will help Stanley Park to compete with the best parks in the country.’ For more information and to register for updates and special offers, people will be able to visit www.blackpoolhighropes.co.uk

Investment to blossom at rock gardens A £25,000 investment is set to help Devonshire Road rock gardens blossom The money, donated by Greenlands’ ward councillors Christine Wright and Chris Ryan, is set to be used for a specialist gardener to look after the gardens for the year ahead. The gardener will carry out maintenance on the grounds, as well as engaging with the local community and working closely with the Friends group to develop the area even further. On top of the gardening role, £3,358.48 has also been donated to the councillors to improve the newly revamped pavilion, namely to provide electricity to the building so that it can be used for more events in the future. An extra £1,531.34 to install and monitor CCTV equipment to prevent vandalism to the restored vista building has also been secured. Local ward councillor Christine Wright, said: ‘The Rock Gardens is a really important part of the local community and I know that residents really appreciate such a clam, relaxing green space right on their doorstep. Making sure that it is maintained properly, kept secure and allowed to thrive is really important and I’m delighted

that this funding will be able to improve this community asset going forwards.’ Fellow ward councillor, Chris Ryan, added: ‘This funding will make sure that the rock gardens, which have been recently restored by the Council, continue to be looked after so that it can be enjoyed by the public for a long time. A lot of people have precious memories of the gardens, either from visiting with their families or being one of the many happy couples who were married there in the past. It’s a unique part of the area and it’s fantastic that we’ve been able to look after it in this way.’

BISPHAM JUNIOR FOOTBALL FEDERATION BJFF are delighted to announce the opening of our new club house which was formerly known as the Whiteholme Community Centre on All Saints Road, Bispham. The “BJFF Community Hub” has undergone an extensive renovation and upgrade over the last couple of months and after a great deal of blood, sweat and tears the doors will finally be opening to our members and the local community this month. A once thriving community base for youth clubs, over 50/60’s organisations and many other community groups, our goal was to regenerate this impressive building in the heart of the Bispham, Norbreck & Anchorsholme communities to not only become the home of BJFF but also provide opportunities for local community groups to utilise the facility to maximum potential. BJFF is a thriving junior football organisation with over 550 male & female playing members across all age groups (ages 3-18). It is a non-profit making organisation and has a dedicated 15 strong Executive Committee, as well as a number of NonExecutive Club Officers. Collectively we undertake to operate BJFF to the best of our ability, all on a voluntary basis, with the children’s interests and wellbeing at the forefront of everything we do. The Club will benefit immeasurably from having a multi-functional facility for club meetings, fundraising & social development events, tournament base, children’s parties, child development / education, not to mention a professionally run club merchandise shop. Our former club house on Kelvin Road has been converted to a dedicated football development centre with an indoor 3G five-a-side pitch complimented by newly refurbished changing facilities. Within the new facility there is a brand new fully functional cafeteria, aptly named the “BJFF

New gym at Moor Park Health and Leisure Centre launched recently. Shelly Woods, Blackpool’s home-grown Paralympic athlete, enjoyed a tour of the new facilities which encompasses an extended brand new 65 station gym. The £414,000 expansion at Moor Park Leisure Centre also includes a large free weights area, Feel Good Factory, meeting space and two new dedicated exercise class and spinning studios. Cllr Graham Cain, cabinet member for tourism and leisure, said: ‘Since the re-launch of Moor Park five years ago, we’ve seen increasing demand following some really good feedback from members. Now with this expansion, we can cater to more members and provide brighter, airy spaces that are welcoming and far from dull. This work is a testament to what we’re trying to achieve with Blackpool’s leisure offer, and we will continue to develop and invest in this area where other authorities can’t. Both new gyms at Moor Park at Palatine are absolutely top quality and include some of the best fitness equipment around, there really is something for everybody. We’ve also opened The Feel Good Factory here,

Shelly Woods and Cllr Graham Cain in the newly refurbished Moor Park gym

a really popular alternative to the regular gym environment. The room is relaxed and social area to aid mobility, strength and weight loss – which has already sold 111 memberships since opening.’

Circus statues for permanent home

An original set of statues by Sir Peter Blake are set to be displayed once again

The two ‘Life as a Circus’ sculptures are set to be put on public display at the main reception of Blackpool Council’s offices on Bickerstaffe Square. ‘Life as a Circus’ celebrates the great entertainment tradition of Blackpool. Named ‘Four Man Up’, and ‘Equestrian Act’, the two columns depict balancing acts of strongmen, horses, and a mermaid, both reaching a height of around ten feet. They were originally commissioned as part of the ‘Great Promenade Show’ for the South Promenade but had to be removed following vandalism. The two statues have now been restored to new and will stand in the reception at the new offices, behind an alarmed glass cabinet. Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for culture and heritage, said: ‘When Sir Peter Blake was originally commissioned to sculpt this piece of artwork, it was a huge coup for Blackpool. He is an internationally acclaimed artist and to have his work in our town was absolutely fantastic. Because of the quality of work, when the originals got damaged, we vowed to do everything we could to make sure that Blackpool locals could still enjoy them in some form. Their new home is alarmed and secure, while still being available for anybody to come and take a look at them. Since their restoration, they look almost as good as new and

Cllr Christine Wright with the Sir Peter Blake statues in their permanent home will fit perfectly into this new and regenerated area of Blackpool. There are a variety of fantastic pieces of culture and art in Blackpool. Of course, we have the Grundy Art Gallery but we also have the Comedy Carpet and the public art pieces along the Promenade. We are proud of every bit of artwork and will continue to make sure that residents can enjoy them too.’ Sir Peter Blake is widely regarded as the father of pop art. He studied at Gravesend School of Art before being accepted into the prestigious Royal Academy of Art in London. His work extends across a diverse range of media including watercolour, drawings, prints, collage, painting, and sculpture. Sir Peter has designed many album covers including The Beatle’s ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ and Paul Weller’s ‘Stanley Road’ album. Sir Peter received his knighthood in 2002.

Under 10s We won our group in the PDPL cup and lost to Thornton in the knockout stages 2-1 on Agg, Thornton eventually went on to win it. We are in the Coulton cup now and have started with a 14-0 Agg win over Warton typhoons. We have done very well in the friendly league losing only a handful of fixtures to the same teams! All in all the manager and coaches are really pleased with the season so far. Under 11s Are currently 5th in the league with a few games in hand on the teams above and matches against a couple of these teams still to come in the season this makes for an exciting finish to the season. In the cup competitions the under 11s were unfortunate to lose on penalties in the first round of the coulton cup but this placed them into the plate competition were they have qualified for the final in May. This will be the under 11s second final appearance in 3 years/. Our website is regularly updated with up-to-date information and contact details – http://www. cliftonrangersjfc.net.
