A Blackpool optician is warning parents about dangers of UV rays on young and undeveloped eyes. Lisa Barrett from Red Bank Opticians Kodak Lens Vision Centre in Bispham is encouraging parents to think of their children this summer when buying sunglasses for themselves. “Everyone knows to protect their children’s skin from the sun, but it is really worrying that so few people are giving their children’s eyes the same protection. Given that children’s eyes are more sensitive and fragile, it is not surprising that they need even more protection against the harmful UV rays than adults.” (Lisa Barrett, Red Bank Opticians Kodak Lens Vision Centre)

Recent research has shown that by the age of 16 more than half a lifetime’s worth of damaging UV light has been absorbed by a child’s eye. Blackpool Air Show 2017 Ready for Take Off

lackpool’s breath-taking Air Show is back for 2017 and looks set to be better than ever!
The spectacular free event will take place on Blackpool Promenade on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 August and will, for the first time, include the Red Arrows on both days. The programme will showcase the very best in British aviation with a whole host of amazing flying machines and some of the country’s most talented pilots. The programme will begin shortly after 1.30pm on both days, with the best viewing points on the promenade between North and Central Piers. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, which features a Spitfire, a Hurricane and a Lancaster Bomber, will take part in a hugely patriotic display. Crowds will also be able to see an RAF Typhoon thunder across the horizon; see spectacular aerobatic displays from Team Twister, the Huey Helicopter and Team Trig as they perform their own versions of aerial ballet with exhilarating sequences of loops and rolls. The RAF Red Arrows will conclude the display each day with their own display of aerial control, speed and synergy. Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said: “This year marks the 108th annual Blackpool Air Show and I have absolutely no doubt it will be as grand as ever. “The line-up looks superb and it’s fantastic that we have the Red Arrows here performing over two consecutive days. It is an event for the family to enjoy and we hope to encourage more people to come along and stay for the two days and enjoy all that the Air Show and Blackpool has to offer.” Visitors are encouraged to arrive in resort early to avoid any queues. To complement the aerial programme, there is also plenty to see and do on the ground before the show starts with a whole range of stalls, stands and concessions including the Red Arrows ground team; the SPAM roadshow; Arnold
Clark; Simulator Supplies; 21 Game Stall; Help for Heroes; Friends of the Red Arrows; Royal British Legion; Blackpool Transport; RAFA; Love My Beach and Blood Bikes. In addition, there will be a fantastic selection of food and drink concessions including The Nag’s Head serving hot and cold beverages; Shake’n’Smooth for delicious smoothies, shakes and waffles, plus lots more to be announced. Blackpool has been wowing the public since 1909 when the town put on the very first official air show in Britain. That was the same year French flyer Louis Bleriot made the first historic crossing of the English Channel. Blackpool campaign urges women to ditch the beds!

here’s no such thing as a safe tan, yet local women are still risking their lives for the sake of a golden glow.
Research carried out by Blackpool Council revealed 60% of sunbed users are still unaware of the cancer risk, despite the increase in public campaigns and bad press surrounding them. Sunbeds give out harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays that damage your skin and can make it look wrinkled, older or leathery. The UV rays from sunbeds can also damage the DNA in your skin cells, and over time this damage can build up to cause skin cancer. Sunbeds can sometimes be marketed as a ‘controlled way’ of getting a ‘safer tan.’ But actually, sunbeds are no safer than exposure to the sun itself, and the amount of UV people receive varies enormously too. Dr Arif Rajpura, Director of Public Health, said: “Sunbeds are incredibly dangerous due to their intense UV rays and, despite the risks, our research shows women are still choosing to use them. “ W h a t ’s particularly alarming is that using a sunbed for the first time before the age of 35 increases your risk of developing melanoma – a deadly f o r m of skin cancer – by nearly 60%.” Cllr Amy Cross, Cabinet Member
for Reducing Health Inequalities, said: “Our campaign aims to send out a strong and emotive message to young women about how dangerous sunbeds are. There are still so many myths about the damage they cause to your skin and we hope to dispel some of these.” From 2010 to 2014, there were on average 43 new cases of malignant melanoma in Blackpool alone, which is significantly higher than England as a whole. Local mum of two, Emma Lyons, 37, was diagnosed with skin cancer after using sunbeds only once a week when she was a teenager. At 21, Emma found a new mole on her body but didn’t think much of it as she had a few already. Within a few months, it grew from a tiny dot to about 5mm. It was also black, but regular shaped and not uneven like a lot of the photos you see in what to look out for. Emma said: “I didn’t use them as much as you’d think you’d need to, to cause skin damage and I stupidly thought a tan looked good, ‘healthy’ even. I wanted to look nice and thought I tanned easily so it wouldn’t be a problem. “I went to see my GP who wasn’t concerned but I asked if I could get it checked by a dermatologist and luckily they referred me to the hospital. A couple of days later they told me it was melanoma. It was such a shock. “I think a lot of people think skin cancer isn’t as ‘serious’ as other cancers but melanoma is lifethreatening. I find it hard to believe people still use sunbeds – I will never use one again.” If you’re looking for a tan, the message is clear – fake it, don’t bake it!
