to your Blackpool North Magazine. O come all ye faithful into the last edition of the year, Christmas is upon us once again! A special time to touch base and spend time with family and friends while enjoying the festive season. There are many events in the what’s on section once again to keep you busy over this period and into the New Year…. We’ve had a fantastic year helping 100’s of local businesses showcase themselves to our readers, as well as supporting as many local events and most of all helping charity events and causes raise £1000’s. LINK-MAG is more than just local directory and free community magazine, it’s an integral part of the local community. Myself and the team here at LINK-MAG would like to wish you a brilliant Christmas and New Year and a special thank you for supporting us over the last 5+years, we’re run by independent local people and give back to the community on many occasions personally. We take a break over Christmas so our next edition will be our combined JAN/FEB issue out from mid January with 12th Dec deadline for all events up to and including Feb 2015 available online as well. Well done to last month’s winner: David Heaney for the Where Am I? Competition. £50 is on its way. Once again have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year, see you in 2015

Daughter invests back into South Shore

Lisa Brownless daughter of Larry & Jeannette Colino, who were licensed victualers in South Shore for many years, has made a return to invest in the area she grew up. She has started up a new family run business with her son Ryan in property development, refurbishing property to a high standard for rental within the Blackpool area. Lisa also saw a niche in the market and decided to open up ‘Heaven An Hell’, a unique and exclusive adult store on Waterloo Road in South Shore. Due to the poor state of the economy you can find products in ‘Heaven An Hell’ up to 50% cheaper and for the same quality product compared to similar stores. With more styles available as well you will find something within Heaven An Hell to suit anybody’s budget. Heaven An Hell opened in August 2014, and has been very successful. They are expanding daily with new ranges of stock, Heaven An Hell Unique parties (unlike any other for any occasion), Birthday’s, Girls Nights In and Hen & Stag Parties.

Get 10% OFF when you call into ‘Heaven An Hell’, everyone is welcome within their relaxed and friendly environment. This is just the beginning for this Family Business, And it won’t be the last you see of them, as expanding ‘Heaven An Hell’ to other locations within Blackpool and other areas is in the pipeline. Blackpool embarks on campaign to become UK’s most welcoming tourist resort

Leading tourism businesses across Blackpool are busy training their staff using the customer service programmes that trained thousands of staff and volunteers at the 2012 Olympic Games, as the resort as a whole seeks to become the first seaside town in the UK to achieve WorldHost Recognised Destination status, renowned for excellent standards of customer service. WorldHost Recognised Destination status is awarded to areas where 25 percent of businesses have reached WorldHost Recognised Business status – that means they have trained 50 percent or more of their front line staff using any of the WorldHost training programmes and signed a commitment to delivering excellent customer service. This project has been partly supported by HM Government with Employer Ownership funding. Blackpool has a target to train at least 2,500 front line workers to achieve destination status. WorldHost is a suite of world-class customer service training programmes that have already been used to train nearly one million people worldwide, including tens of thousands of staff and volunteers for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Programmes include training on the key principles of customer service, serving customers with disabilities, improving sales through customer service, welcoming customers from other cultures and ambassador training. The campaign is being led by the Blackpool Tourism Academy (BTA), a partnership of leading tourism employers including Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Merlin, Blackpool Zoo, Sandcastle Waterpark, Blackpool Transport Services, the Winter Gardens and Cuerden Leisure. Nigel Kilgallon, Director at Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Chair of the BTA Board, said: ‘The Blackpool Tourism Academy has received almost £1m of government support though the Employer Ownership Pilot fund to co-invest in a range of vocational training programmes that will lift the skills set of our workforce and offer opportunities to other tourism and retail businesses in the town. Quality customer service is a key driver of success for any business in Blackpool and we want all businesses large and small to help us become the UK’s first seaside resort with WorldHost destination status.’ Cllr Graham Cain, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for tourism and leisure, said: ‘Millions of people come to enjoy Blackpool every year.

As well as them making the most of our world class attractions, we want them to get a world class level of customer service too. Regardless of which attraction, shop or restaurant that they visit, we want them to feel like a valuable tourist who is welcomed in the town so that they have the best experience possible. We’ve all experienced what excellent customer service feels like, but to actually deliver it day in day out is a different matter. Hopefully, this project will help make more people return to the town, thus bringing more money into local shops and businesses which in turns creates and secures jobs.’ Paula Clark, Blackpool’s WorldHost Training Coordinator, said: ‘The Tourism Academy now has 30 trainers who are licensed to deliver training to the required standard and are rolling this out within their respective businesses. We now want to open up this subsidised training opportunity to other businesses in the town. This a fantastic opportunity to embed world-class customer service skills across the resort - from hotels and guest houses, to taxis and public transport, to shops, cafes and other leisure and hospitality businesses’. Music Sounds Better With Huw Top Radio One DJ heads to Blackpool this December This December the premier venue for new music in Blackpool will play host to the official authority in all things exciting and vibrant in the UK’s thriving new music scene, as top DJ Huw Stephens heads to The Blue Room to play a selection of amazing music, both new and old. Huw Stephens was born in Cardiff, Wales, the son of the author and literary journalist Meic Stephens. He joined Radio 1 at the age of 17 in 1999 as part of the station’s new regional output and became the youngest ever Radio 1 presenter. In 2005, Stephens gained a national slot when he became one of the replacements for the late John Peel as part of Radio 1’s One Music strand. He went on to present the weekend afternoon show and a two hour new music programme on Thursday evenings, as well as being regular daytime cover. Stephens now presents the 22:00-01:00 show, Monday to Wednesday. Stephens also presents a weekly Radio 1 free podcast. He curates the Introducing Stage, which showcases new unsigned and emerging music at the Reading and Leeds, Glastonbury, One Big Weekend and T in the Park festivals. Huw has been nominated twice for a Bafta Cymru award in the Best On Screen Presenter category for S4C music programme ‘Bandit’. 22

He also regularly presents a twice weekly show on BBC Radio Cymru and presents television programmes for BBC Wales. Huw also has his own festival, the ‘Swn festival’ in Cardiff that happens in venues across the city with local promoters and the best new bands playing. This is a real boost for the recently reopened venuein Blackpool as it continues to give upcoming local acts a platform to perform and hone their skills locally before heading further afield. Support will come from Blackpool band ‘The Colours’ who have been making a name for themselves across Lancashire with their (ahem) colourful and danceable indie sound. Your Club, Our Community

We are an FA Charter Standard Development football club, founded in 1977 to coach junior and youth football. The club was awarded an FA Charter Development status on the 6th March, 2010. Player selection: U14 players are selected for Blackpool, Fylde & Wyre Football Team. We are pleased to announce and congratulate Finley Clarkson, Jack Arrowsmith and Henry Eadie for being selected to represent the Blackpool, Fylde & Wyre representative team at U14s! This is a massive achievement for the boys and a proud moment for Clifton Rangers to see our long term serving players be selected! The standard of 16 boys selected is a very good level of ability and includes representatives of pro academy clubs. On behalf of the management teams, parents, grandparents and fellow players at Clifton Rangers we wish them good luck. Junior Rangers: The Junior Rangers is our entry point for the fundamental development of children aged 4 to 7 years through games, football skills and social interaction with a team. A work placement programme delivered by Blackpool Council is celebrating achieving a national award for the quality of its support helping residents on their journey into employment.

The Chance2Shine programme offers out-of-work adults the opportunity to gain up-to-date work experience across a range of Council departments, from both blue and white collar occupational areas. If successful, participants gain a useful reference to add to their CV, and continue to receive support in responding to job vacancies. So far, 111 placements have been organised in the last 12 months with 43 people going onto achieve paid employment with various employers, including the Council. Private and third sector employers have offered additional placements to extend the range of opportunities available. The success of the programme has been recognised following an in-depth assessment by national charity Fair Train, who has awarded the Council its ‘gold award’ for the National Work Experience Quality Standard. The award was presented to Blackpool Council’s Deputy Chief Executive Carmel McKeogh by Fair Train Chief Executive Beth Gardner. Mrs Gardner, said: ‘We rarely award a gold standard at the first attempt but we

were really impressed with the genuine commitment of the Council to help people who face real challenges complete a highly tailored work placement, with excellent supervisory support throughout. Outcomes achieved showed how essential such a scheme can be as part of a package of measures to help people onto the jobs ladder.’ Khristopher MacLeod, who undertook a work placement as a cleaner this year and has since graduated to a permanent job, told of his experience: ‘I went through a long period of being unemployed and hated it. I wanted something new so I did my training with the Chance2Shine programme, learnt new skills and gained a lot of confidence. I was offered two permanent jobs from private companies at the end of my placement and I now enjoy saying to people that I’m working in a full time job again. Without the help support I received, this wouldn’t have been possible, and I thank everyone involved in my journey back to work.’

Cllr Fred Jackson, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for urban regeneration, said: ‘The Chance2Shine initiative is without a doubt one of the best in the country at helping people who are unemployed to gain the experience necessary to get back into paid work. The jobs market is still tough for people, so having that extra bit of recent experience on the CV can get you noticed by employers who want willing candidates hungry to learn new skills. We now have a number of companies approaching us to organise placements for them, in addition to our continuing Council offer.’ If you can offer a quality work placement and need some help - call 0800 073 2007 for more information.

Parking boost over Christmas Blackpool Council and the Blackpool BID have joined forces to launch two festive car parking offers ahead of the Christmas shopping period. The first offer, aimed at helping local firms and encouraging visitors and residents to discover Blackpool’s wide variety of small shops on national ‘Small Business Saturday’, will see free parking offered at all Council car parks on Saturday 6 December. The offer is available throughout the day and evening. The second offer will see shoppers offered parking for a pound in four town centre car parks – West Street, Central, Talbot multi-storey and East Topping Street. This offer will run on the four Thursday late night shopping events on November 27 and December 4, 11 and 18 from 5pm until midnight. Joining in with the Thursday night offer , the Houndshill Shopping Centre car park will also be a pound to park from 5pm - midnight. Sunday November 30 and December 7, 14 and 21 are also included in the Park for a Pound offer in the four Council Town Centre Car Parks. It is hoped the two offers will mean a healthy influx of visitors to Blackpool’s ever improving town centre to take advantage of the range of shops, restaurants and entertainment on offer. Cllr John Jones, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: ‘The Christmas period is the most important time of the year for the retail sector and we want to do all that we can to encourage as many shoppers as possible in Blackpool. These offers are designed to attract people to carry out their Christmas shopping in Blackpool and hopefully also stop for bite to eat or to enjoy a show. For our local businesses to 24

thrive they need support from local people. I hope that residents and visitors take advantage of these parking offers and in turn support our local economy.’ Eileen Ormand, Town Centre and BID Manager said: ‘With the variety of good quality restaurants and cafes, national and independent retailers and our enviable leisure offer with theatres, bars, clubs, and the Winter Gardens, and the Blackpool Tower our town centre really does have something for everyone. These car parking offers jointly funded by Blackpool BID and Blackpool Council will benefit our loyal residents and visitors and are a real thank you to them for their visits but also are a great way to encourage people who perhaps haven’t visited the town centre for some time to “Park for a Pound” and come and see just why Blackpool town centre is so special. I urge everyone to take up these Car Parking offers, support the independent stores on Small Business Saturday, come into the town centre on the Christmas Thursday nights and think how much fun you and your family can have in Blackpool all day (and evening!) for just a pound to park your car on the Christmas Sundays.’ Car parks participating on Small Business Saturday, 7th December; Bolton Street, Bonny Street, Central, Central Beach, Central Coach & Car Park, Chapel Street (surface), Cocker Square, Cocker Street, East Topping Street, Gynn Square, Lonsdale A, Lonsdale B, Lytham Road, Queen Street, South Beach Car Park, South Car Park, South King Street, Talbot Multi Storey, Tower Street, West Street.

Local RSPCA news Can you offer a home to an animal?

Ebony was abandoned at the vets by her previous owner, they left her there to have an operation and never collected her. She is a sweet girl who can sometimes be shy so a quieter home would be better. She is thought to be 3- 5 years old, She is a very pretty cat who likes affection but sometimes just wants to lay in the sun and sleep. She is suitable to live with older children but no other animals. She could possibly live with another cat as long as it is a calm one. Marco was transferred to us from another Centre along with his 2 brothers. He is a young Degu. He is very friendly and likes being handled. He had to have his tail amputated but it doesn’t effect him. He loves his wheel and his treats. It is hoped he would be able to live with other degus but it would need to be another male and they would have to make sure they didn’t fight. Degus are £15.00 each to adopt and like to be active so need big cages. The Amazon Wishlist Christmas Tree Appeal, this year RSPCA are doing something extra special by having a Christmas Tree which has cards attached with wishlist items on. These are items from their Amazon wishlist online. You can choose a card from the tree and on it is the item you may wish to purchase for the Centre. You can then replace the card with a picture of your own pet or in memory of a previous pet if you wish. To view their wishlist online please visit http://tinyurl.com/bplrspcawishlist or pop down to the Centre to view the tree with the items on.

Work to expand a popular Blackpool leisure centre has begun

Moor Park Health & Leisure Centre is currently undergoing expansion work to extend the size of the fitness and exercise studios, as well as to introduce a dedicated room for a Feel Good Factory – a ladies only toning suite facility. The £414,000 investment will extend the fitness studio to include 20 more exercise stations, as well as a large area dedicated to free weights. A new exercise class and spinning studio will also be located on the ground floor, while a meeting space will also be created next to the large activity room. In addition, following the success of the Feel Good Factory toning suite at Palatine Leisure Centre, a similar facility will also be built in to the first floor at Moor Park. Since opening the facility at Palatine in 2012, it has gained 300 regular users and its thought a similar scheme in the north of the town could be beneficial too. Cllr Graham Cain, cabinet member for leisure and tourism, said: ‘Since the re-launch of Moor Park in 2011, it has proved exceptionally popular and we’re getting some really good feedback from people who visit it.

Moor Park Leisure Centre Now we’re investing even more in to the centre to make it better still. People have said that they want more exercise machines and bigger studios so we’ve listened to their feedback and are doing exactly that. The Feel Good Factory at Palatine has proved really popular as an alternative to the regular gym environment. The room is more relaxed and sociable and has been a hit with people who don’t want to join the more serious gym goers in the regular studio. I hope it will be as successful at Moor Park too. All three of our leisure centres provide excellent value for money and are a great way for people to get fit and healthy. If anyone wants to find out more about joining they can go to any of the receptions or visit www.sportblackpool.co.uk for more information’

Expansion for popular leisure centre

The finished expansion will be open to the public from 19 January 2015. During the refurbishment period, some changes have been made to class timetable at the centre with the majority of spinning and exercise classes being relocated to the sports hall, library or community centre. Anybody who uses the classes at the leisure centre should check at reception to see whether their class has been moved.

Local Volunteer Community Health Champions sought A team of volunteer ‘Community Health Champions’ are being sought by NHS Fylde and Wyre Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).

Continuing from the success of the previous recruitment campaign we are now looking for a second intake of volunteer ‘Community Health Champions’ to work on projects with NHS Fylde and Wyre Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). The CHC’s will act as a direct link between local communities and the CCG, helping to shape future services and improve existing ones. These volunteer roles provide an opportunity for local people to gain new knowledge & skills, but more importantly make a real difference within their community. Community Health Champions have the opportunity to make a substantial impact on the future of health care in Fylde and Wyre. Through sharing their own feedback and the experiences of the wider community, the CHC’s have the opportunity to tell the CCG what is working well and what services need to be improved.

Anyone living in the Fylde and Wyre area can apply for one of these roles. People living outside of the area who have a direct link to services delivered in Fylde and Wyre may also be considered. An already existing interest in health services is not necessarily essential. To find out more about this volunteer role then contact Christine Carty on 07460 131188, 01253 344398 or email ccg@rpotential.co.uk

Sensational end to the season

Blackpool’s tourism industry has enjoyed one of its best seasons in years. That was the verdict at VisitBlackpool’s end of season review event at the Winter Gardens as hoteliers, attractions, business owners and those responsible for promoting the town looked back on 2014. The event, attended by more than 50 leading figures from the industry, also saw the launch of two new visitor economy initiatives – a new approved visitor accommodation scheme (1) and the roll out of the WorldHost customer service programme across the resort. The event attendees were told that the challenge was to replicate the success of 2014 next year. Initiatives already in the pipeline for 2015 include: • Bringing back the brilliant events programme that lit up the summer season and helped drive a 30% (2) increase in overnight stays including Showzam!, Armed Forces Week, the Blackpool Air Show, the World Fireworks Championships, the Switch-On Festival Weekend and Ride the Lights. • Bringing another high-profile summer season show to the Winter Gardens to try to match the success of Mamma Mia! which scooped more than £3m at the Box Office (3), making it the highest grossing show in the resort’s history. • Adding new attractions to ‘The Resort Pass’, the Disney style all in one pass to numerous Blackpool attractions which has proved so popular.

• Exploring ways to invest in the Illuminations and find new streams of funding to meet the financial challenges facing the local authority. • Continuing to try to increase business tourism, capitalising on the new direct Blackpool to London rail link, exploring further conferencing and events opportunities. • Marketing the resort nationally with positive publicity such as that achieved by the Blackpool’s Back campaign, Strictly Come Dancing and much more Cllr Graham Cain, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for tourism and leisure, thanked businesses and residents for supporting events and tourism this year and pledged to continue to make bold decisions, like bringing in MAMMA MIA! which was such a success. He said: ‘It has been a truly fantastic season. The success of MAMMA MIA!, the Switch-On Festival Weekend, the World Fireworks Championships, Blackpool Air Show and so much more has been a huge tonic for Blackpool. Add that to the incredible regeneration work that has gone on here from the transformation of the Promenade and the creation of the Comedy Carpet and Festival House to the sparkling new Talbot Gateway Central Business District that now greets visitors who get off the train at Blackpool North Station and we really believe we have a winning formula. As the campaign says Blackpool is back and our job now is to build on that in 2015.’

There are many types of animal pen to sponsor. With the scheme you won’t be helping just one animal, you’ll be sponsoring the lives of all who pass through our animal centre every year.
