ooths has been thanked for its generosity after the well-known family firm has agreed to support the Blackpool Food Partnership all year round. It’s now donating surplus bread, veg and fruit to the award winning Partnership which co-ordinates and delivers food three times a week to charities, hostels, children’s centres, luncheon clubs and community kitchens across Blackpool, enabling thousands more people to receive help and develop community spirit.

Poulton Stores for the Partnership, along with leaflets explaining the type of food needed. “To be able to do something kind and practical with our food waste means a great deal to Booths, and it’s both reassuring to know we’ve been able to help so many people locally,” explained Colin Porter from the company. Nikki is pictured with Sue Oldroyd who runs the Foodbank at Springfield Methodist Church, Bispham.

Nikki Hart, project manager from Methodist Action NW which runs the Partnership said: “The best use of surplus food isn’t a bin, it’s a belly. “Blackpool Food Partnership is now distributing £57,000 a year of surplus food. We currently collect frozen bread, fruit and vegetables, damaged tinned and dried items from Booths and will soon be collecting some dairy products too. “We distribute to Fleetwood Foodbank, and a range of churches and charities across the Fylde coast.” Booths have collection points in its St Anne’s and 22

HOROSCOPES 2016

By Jason Caddy

www.jasoncaddy.co.uk

Your Year Ahead Aries

Your ruler Mars beats a retreat from April to June and this brings a natural hiatus to your year, the fallout from which will last well into July. But you should consider that, although your energy levels might deplete, itmaycome at exactly the right time because you’ll be more inclined to think about where you’re going in life rather than plumping for the first/easiest option. And change course only if necessary after this kind of forced spell of deliberation. The planet that rules luck, Jupiter, makes its annual move in August landing on its feet as usual, this time in your opposite sign. While it’s in Libra, where it’ll remain for 12 months, watch your luck in love improve as you attract someone generous, polished, if not a bit of a know-all, but if his or her heart’s in the right place I’m sure that you can forgive them that. All this adds up to a year when you’ll learn a lot about yourself and the benefits of patience because wisdom comes from not making snap judgements and truly taking people as they are without thinking that you know what’s best for them.

Taurus Mars is a planet that likes to mind its own business and, well, just get on with things really with the minimal amount of fuss, so we rely on it to fire us up when our internal pilot light is in danger of being snuffed out. But from April to June it’ll go backwards in Sagittarius and plough up some sticky emotional areas as far as you’re concerned. This also of course strikes up some of your core sensitivities and may make you a bit more prickly than usual, but this is not a time to go it alone, so please do bear in mind that two heads are better than one whatever life throws at you during this time. The luckiest planet of all, Jupiter, moves into Libra in August, and this is fandabidozi for you, Taurus. It shifts the focus of fortune onto your work and health areas so if you’ve been looking to move up in the world of work or pack a punch at the gym then this is exactly the time of year when you should be concentrating your energies into these areas. And with Saturn in Sagittarius, this is also a great year for either joining forces emotionally, in a business sense, or both.

Gemini You start the year with your ruler Mercury backwards so you might not exactly be firing on all cylinders as you fold away Christmas for another year. All you might manage to do at this point in fact is be misunderstood however much underlining you do, plus travel plans may also be subject to hiccups so make sure that your Kindle is fully charged. It’s a similar story right at the other end of the year, from around mid-December actually, plus two other retrograde spells in the middle making the filling to this sandwich of confusion when you shouldn’t make any big decisions or sign contracts, namely the end of April until around the time the sun enters your sign on 20thMay and for most of September. Saturn continues its construction work in the sign of Sagittarius and this can make certain relationships

feel like a bit of a slog, although you’ll continually surprise yourself with your mature attitude. Finally, lucky Jupiter moves into Libra in August and this is absolutely fabulous for lighting the fuse of new romance, creative ventures or returning to where you were in a LTR if things have went a bit stodgy and boring.

Cancer Being ruled by the moon, you surrender to the ups and downs of its cycles to a greater extend than any other sign so you’re a changeable sign. This all still applies this year of course but as you lose your stabilisers and throw yourself into a relationship you may have to learn to bury your insecurities a bit more and not pin them on your partner. A good place to start is by not continually testing their loyalty. Mars goes backwards from April to your roughly your birthday time, and this will bring a change to your working scenario and could mean that you do a lot more work alone. Alternatively, you may slow down if you’ve been overdoing it by living in the fast lane and running yourself ragged as a result, or spending more time at the gym than is good for you and your personal life. But the cavalry eventually arrives because the move of Jupiter in August is great for your life-work balance, for as well as bringing luck over family announcements, house moves and parents it also makes you feel a lot more centred and sure in yourself.

Leo There could be some mild confusion at work at the beginning of the year that your marvellous creativity will be able to find a workaround for. The only way to avoid criticism is by doing and saying nothing, and how boring is that! Mars, the planet that channels our energy and drive, goes backwards from April until June in the part of the chart that your sign rules. So generally speaking frustration levels are likely to rise, particularly if you again feel like your ideas are being dismissed (don’t let them grind you down), or you might find greater difficulty relating to younger people. But the best is yet t come, and your birthday time is made extra special by the move of the planet of luck, Jupiter, into Libra. This brings you mental clarity and can mean that you patch things up with a sibling or neighbour or close friend that, although you may not have admitted it yourself, has caused you concern that you have closed off at the back of your mind. Travel is also indicated at this time, or maybe even a night class, and you shouldn’t feel embarrassed about wanting to learn something new or improve your lot.

Virgo Mars stirs up lots of memories between April and early July connected to anything from your recent past to your childhood. It’s also likely that the advice of your parents that you perhaps chose to ignore will come back at you. You may also experience hold-ups over a house move or feel like you’re taking a backwards step (like moving back

in with mum and dad maybe?!). You also wave off Jupiter from your sign just after your birthday time as it moves into your money sector. This is fabulous news for landing on your feet financially, whereas others will go to town on spending with no regard for the consequences. Jupiter may be lucky but it doesn’t make you bulletproof so might be best not to think that you should always be the one footing the bill. The only other thing to watch out for is your ruler Mercury retrograde in your sign from roughly mid-August to mid-September throwing more than its fair share of spanners in the works and meaning that you’ll be chasing your tail quite a bit.

Libra What a year it’ll shape up to be for you, Libra. But before we get the bit when you’re flying high, there’s a tiny bit of turbulence to negotiate between April and June when Mars goes backwards. This is the planet that governs our drives and our determination to get things done so this might be a bit of a fallow period for you in terms of you being able to communicate with people effectively. Frustrating. Your ideas may become muddled and you may come to judge people prematurely, especially siblings and neighbours. This is temporary of course, and if proceeded by the biggest lift you get all year when in August King of the Gods Jupiter moves into your sign where it’ll remain for a year. Hallelujah. This amps up your luck and your vision and also makes you prone to think bigger than you have been in a long time and your thirst for knowledge and travel etc. will be increased, plus there’ll also be a legal resolution coming that should turn out in your favour.

Scorpio Now that you’ve been free of Saturn in your sign for a while you should be getting used to having all of that wiggle room in your life, and loving it. There’s a lot going in in the heavens this year, and distilling it down for you, the first thing that you should be aware of is Mars’s backward motion between April and June. It happens in your money sector, so as well as hold-ups with banks, property and mobilising funds in general you may also have to stand up to someone that gets a kick from putting you down or taking unnecessary pot shots at your contributions. Don’t be kept down at heel. In August, the planet that directs fortune moves into a very mysterious part of your chart, and a secret may be blown out of the water or feelings that have been repressed burst out into the open. All of this is ultimately healthy and spiritually cleansing, satisfying etc. even if this isn’t normally the kind of stuff that floats your boat.

Sagittarius With such a lot going on in your piece of sky in 2016 it’s difficult to know where to begin, so we’ll start at the very beginning. Watch for financial mishaps right at the start of the year or misplaced hero worship, and once you get to February, things even out before Mars turns on its heel in your sign in April until June, robbing you of much of your va-va-voom. Putting a positive spin on this as is your wont being such an optimistic sort, you’ll be less likely to put your foot in your mouth or make rash commitments that you really won’t feel like honouring when it comes to the crunch. In August

your ruler Jupiter moves into a fabulous part of the chart for finding a soul connection, or for making new friends or finding luck in a group scenario. The backdrop to all of this of course is Saturn’s first full year in your sign, blessing you with an air of maturity plus the wherewithal to work hard to achieve your goals

Capricorn As you pack up the Christmas decorations for another year, celebrate your birthday or look forward to getting your teeth into another year, you may not be as on the ball as you’d like. This is down to Mercury generally muddying the waters as the year finds its feet, although normalcy returns come the end of January. The next milestone is April through June because this is when the usually dynamic Mars turns a bit floppy and wet. It’ll all be kicking off in a difficult part of your chart and one that makes withdrawing from the world very tempting or, heaven forbid, wallowing in self-pity more likely. Just be aware that the more you chew over things and shut yourself away the worse things seem. The great news is that from August, Jupiter shoots to the top of your chart, spelling success and recognition in your career accompanied by a general rise in your personal profile. So if you’ve been sat in the slow lane watching all manner of people accelerate past you with a pitying yet smug smile, this is your turn to bask in the spotlight.

Aquarius After a shaky start to the year when you might be more wistful and nostalgic than you’d like, by the time your birthday arrives you’ll be high-kicking your way to success. Mars is normally the planet that helps us give ourselves a shake when life gets on top of us, but it takes a very long lunch between April and June in your most sociable zone. This means that your social circle may temporarily contract or people will be difficult to get hold of. Brilliant Jupiter moves into fellow airy Libra in August and so begins an immensely lucky time for you if you’re looking to shake up a humdrum existence by retraining and learning a new skill, travelling more extensively or expanding your social contacts. This can also bring a legal matter to a head. Just watch for thinking that you know what’s best for others and getting all evangelical if something works for you.

Pisces Mars can dent your ambition between April and June, either that or you’ll be sending out a whole heap of mixed messages to the world about what you want and what you don’t want. September could be equally as tricky, this time for a relationship, because communications break down or you just don’t know how to please someone. Maybe you should stop trying and let things take their natural course. The most fabulous news of all is the move of Jupiter in August into Libra, which in your chart is a very intimate place, and this can be your gateway to improving the physical side of a relationship, starting a business or putting your head together with someone to make money. If you’ve been agonising over a property sale that’s been dragging its feet, lucky Jupiterhappily shunts this along too. If you’re blinded to reality in mid-June, November puts you back in touch with reality.

Grundy’s year of programming focusing on its collection

T

he Grundy Art Gallery is to begin a year of programming centered on its collection, with a major new commission by celebrated artist Ben Cain focusing on the permanent works of the gallery. It begins with a new exhibition, ‘Companions’, which runs until 30 January 2016.

it come together.” Richard Parry, Curator of the Grundy Art Gallery, added: “Companions is all about seeing the works in the collection as if they were painted yesterday, as if you were the artist painting the portrait and were thinking through how to shape a vase or a bowl as if from scratch.

For this exhibition, the artist has selected sixteen paintings from the Grundy’s current collection and has worked with local artists and craftspeople to have objects from within the paintings fabricated and introduced into the gallery as new sculptures alongside the original images.

“This is about imagining new lives for the objects and people within each of the paintings. It comes out of thinking about what it means to have a permanent collection, and how we might offer a parallel reality for works that are envisaged to stay the same forever.”

In one of the pieces, a vase sitting on a side-table in a painting is brought to life by a potter, while in another an amber glass necklace worn by the sitter in the original painting is has been created by a glassblower.

The exhibition is inspired by the Grundy collection itself, which is made up of an eclectic mix of items from paintings to jewelry to ornaments and furniture accumulated over the years, frequently with little known provenance.

The artist has constructed a special stage for the new sculptures to be displayed, which collects all the new sculptures into a 3D still life scene. The gallery is keen to encourage visitors to get involved and to draw sketches of the new sculptures – essentially making copies of the copies. Cllr Vikki Singleton, Lead for Arts at Blackpool Council, said: “We have some spectacular pieces of art as part of the Grundy’s collection already and I’m keen that we show those pieces of the public. “However, it is important to keep those pieces fresh and to reinvent them as new sculptures is a very interesting idea. “This exhibition should allow everybody to enjoy our current collection and I am looking forward to seeing

Companions opens a year of programming at the Grundy exploring its collection and improving the collection facilities. Over the next 12 months the Gallery will be commissioning contemporary artists to create new work in response to the Grundy’s collection; upgrading the gallery’s environmental controls and making repairs to the collection store; working with young people across Blackpool to interpret items from our collection in new ways; and developing the collection through new acquisitions.

Tower Heritage Work Wins Award

W

ork to restore The Blackpool Tower’s famous arched frontage has been praised after winning a regional planning award. The project was commended by the North West branch of the Royal Town Planning Institute at an awards ceremony last week for the creative way that council planners secured the highest possible standard of repairs for the Tower through their preapplication process. Last year, Blackpool Council undertook a project to restore nine terracotta arches to the front of the Blackpool Tower building, bringing the façade of the building backs to its original design. Stained glass windows on the façade were also repaired, re-leaded and put on display for the first time in years, with the finished product revealed last summer. The completed works not only restore the look of the

Tower building, but provide it with more protection from the weathering that it can receive on Blackpool’s seafront. The heritage conservation project was part of a wider multi-million pound investment to safeguard Blackpool’s biggest assets such as the Blackpool Tower and the Winter Gardens. Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said: “We are taking a really active role in protecting Blackpool’s rich heritage. “A big part of the Council owning vital assets like the Tower and the Winter Gardens was making sure that they were properly restored and protected, so people could continue to enjoy them for years to come. “Anybody who has seen the work on the Tower front will agree that it looks spectacular and I’m really pleased that work has been recognised with this commendation.”

This ancient town dates back to the 7th century and as know as Wygyan in 1240. Although porcelain manufacture and clock making had been major industries in the town, Wigan subsequently became known as a major mill town and coal mining district. The first coal mine was established at Wigan in 1450 and at its peak there were 1,000 pit shafts within 5 miles (8 km) of the town centre. Mining was so extensive that one town councillor remarked that “a coal mine in the backyard was not uncommon in Wigan”. Coal mining ceased during the latter part of the 20th century. Wigan Pier, a wharf on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal was made

famous by the writer George Orwell. In his book, The Road to Wigan Pier, Orwell highlighted the poor working and living conditions of the local inhabitants during the 1930s.
