Hold audition tiny dancer One of the region’s most popular dance groups is holding an audition for new recruits

he Fylde Coast Youth Dance Company has now been running for two years and has had extraordinary success.
During their first year in existence alone they won places at the ‘Lancashire Youth Dance Festival’, ‘U Dance North West’ and at the first ever ‘Commonwealth Youth Dance Festival’. Giving youngsters from the region an opportunity to showcase their skills on big stages. They then built on that success this year by returning to the ‘Lancashire Youth Dance Festival’ for a second year, working with renowned choreographer Lisi Perry on a performance in Central Library and by taking part in the national tour of ‘Hercules’ by New Art Club, which was performed on 23rd June at Blackpool Grand Theatre. The company is now on the lookout for the top talent of all styles and levels of experience to join them. Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said: ‘Applicants can be aged between 12 and 19. The company are looking for passionate dancers, people who are 20
enthusiastic and those who want a challenge. Whether you’ve been dancing all your life, or are brand new to it; if you’ve got what it takes, then we want to see you! As a member of the company, you will develop your contemporary dance technique, work with professional dancers and choreographers and create high quality performance work to be performed on stages across the North West. BCH supports new Memory Café A project funded through Blackpool Coastal Housing’s Tenants Project Fund, has opened its doors

Friends group for Marton Mere Residents are being asked to join a brand new group to help Marton Mere Nature Reserve

he reserve is currently undergoing a £368,000 makeover, thanks to Heritage Lottery Fund and The Veolia Environmental Trust, to improve the site with habitat works, updated paths and signage, bird hides and a new visitor centre. The new Friends of Marton Mere group will be supporting these improvement works, promoting the site and fundraising to help make a great nature reserve even better. Everyone is welcome to come along to find out how to get involved and be part of the new Friends Group on Wednesday 20 May at 6pm at the new Visitor Centre located on Marton Mere Holiday Park.

Innovative Rover scoops national award Blackpool Council’s innovative idea to boost recycling has scooped a national award
T
he Rover service, which travels to various locations around the town and takes away their unwanted items, has been hailed as the ‘Best Community Recycling Initiative’ in the LetsRecycle. com Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management. The awards were announced at the end of May in London by TV host Eamonn Holmes. Rover, which launched back in October 2013, has collected almost 200 tonnes of waste from 10,000 local residents that otherwise would have gone to landfill. Around 23,000 households in Blackpool do not own a car which would allow them to drive to the tip on Bristol Avenue, Bispham. Difficulty getting to the tip, Blackpool Council believes, is a big factor in fly-tipping problems which can sometimes infuriate local residents. John Blackledge, Blackpool Council’s Director for Community and Environmental Services, said: ‘Rover is a fantastic example of how the Council is thinking of new, creative ideas to help improve the town. Not only does it make it recycling easier for residents but it also makes it more efficient for us too. Electrical items that were being put in the black bins are now being recycled so they can be used again, while other items that are still in a good condition can be sold on at the Re-use store. The service has proved extremely popular over the last 18 months and we are now travelling to around 70 locations across Blackpool every week. Ever since day one we’ve been improving the service and we will continue to do that to make it even more helpful for local people.’ 26

Items that will be accepted by Rover include: Electrical items (TVs, toasters, hair dryers etc), Cans, Glass, Plastic, Spectacles, Phones, Paper/cardboard, Wood, Scrap metals, Batteries - large and domestic, Clothes and textiles and Paint It is operated by third sector provider, Helping Hand, on behalf of Blackpool Council. The scheme is free and runs alongside Blackpool Council’s existing Bulky Matters waste collection scheme which collects large items direct from people’s homes for a small fee (£6 per item with a minimum of three items). All the materials Rover collects are either recycled or sold via the Re-Use Store at the Bristol Avenue tip – another Blackpool Council innovation. he national awards, announced by ‘Keep Britain Tidy’, have rewarded Blackpool South, Blackpool Central, Blackpool North and Bispham for their high standards of beach management, as well as their nearby facilities. It also commends the Council’s beach patrol work to help beach goers stay safe while also advising them on how to protect the local environment and keep it clean. It is the second successive year that all four beaches have been granted the award, which celebrates some of the best beaches in the country.

lackpool Coastal Housing’s Tenant’s Project Fund provides grants to help local projects that improve lives for local BCH tenants, residents and leaseholders. Previous beneficiaries include the new Memory Café for older people at Ibbison Court Community Centre, as well as the Blackpool Life Charity, who received £500 in funding to provide ‘baby bags’ full of essential items such as nappies, baby grow and wipes, to new and expectant mothers. In total, around 26 projects have been supported by the fund to help local residents. This year, Blackpool Coastal Housing is looking for more worthy causes to support. John Donnellon, Chief Executive of Blackpool Coastal Housing, said: ‘We are always keen to support projects which improve the lives of our tenants, residents and leaseholders. Over the years, we have supported some extremely worthy projects, which help build closer communities, promote healthy lifestyles and

improve opportunities for children – to name just a few. It doesn’t matter whether your project is big or small – we will support you throughout the process. The best way to get started is to come to our session on Monday and find out all about the application process.’ Applications for large projects (between £500 and £10,000) need to be submitted by Friday 28 August 2015, while small grants (£500 and under) can be submitted throughout the year. We’re going to have words Blackpool’s popular festival of literature and arts, Wordpool, is back
T
he always popular festival, which runs from the 1st to 4th July, is now in its ninth year and will again feature a host of top authors, poets and speakers as well as a free family fun day known as ‘Story Safari’. A huge hit with families in previous years, the family fun day part of the festival in Stanley Park will feature up to 20 different events, activities and attractions all crammed in to three hours of fun from 1pm on Saturday 4th July. So come and search the park for giant pigeons, encounter our huge bubble breathing dragon or tackle the amazing Tower Menagerie. Children (or those who are children at heart) can become a safari character themselves by making a magical mask to wear during all the exciting activities and you can bring a picnic or join us at the Tiger’s Tea Party. For those with a more grown-up literary focus there are also a range of exciting events. Wordpool launches on Wednesday 1st July at 6pm at the Mazzei Café in Blackpool’s stunning Winter Gardens with an evening of words, music and performance poetry from the brilliant Tony Walsh. It’s then followed up by a packed day of interesting events at Central Library on Thursday 2 July. First on the bill at 11am and 12.30pm respectively are Ali Shaw and Tasha Kavanagh, two new novelists. Lancaster University graduate Ali authored the excellent The Man Who Rained – an atmospheric novel described as ‘like an adult fairy tale’ and will give a talk about his life and work. Tasha, meanwhile, is a former film editor whose credits include Hollywood blockbusters like Twelve Monkeys and The Talented Mr Ripley. She recently released her debut novel ‘Things We Have In Common’ having cut her teeth writing children’s books. At 2.30pm and back by popular demand, is crime writer, Elly Griffiths. Author of the successful Ruth Galloway Series; she will talk about her new novel The Ghost Girl. Husband and wife crime writing duo Bob and Carol Bridgestock, consultants for TV series Happy Valley and Scott and Bailey, follow her at 4pm. The pair draw on their combined 47 years’ experience working for the police in West Yorkshire within their work and their DI Dylan series of works has proven extremely popular. And if that wasn’t enough, Wordpool fans can enjoy a performance from the fantastic ‘Fylde Coast Youth Dance Company’ at 5.30pm before Manchesterbased, Collette Snowden, discusses her debut novel ‘The Secret of Not Drowning’, at 6pm. There is even

a Twitter book club in the evening which looks forward to the visit of historical novelist Elizabeth Fremantle on the Friday and discusses her novel Watch The Lady. The huge list of interesting authors doesn’t end there though, on Friday 3rd July Central Library is again the venue for a range of interesting conversational interviews which will spotlight some of the most interesting authors around. At 11am a pair of exteachers, Dan Worsley and Karen Charlton, are in conversation with poet and Blackpool Museum learning and skills manager, John Simpson Wedge. They hope to give aspiring authors an insight into self-publishing. They’re followed at 12.30pm by Elizabeth Freemantle, who will also chat to John, about her life and works including a three part Tudor trilogy which has achieved national acclaim. Southport born author Carys Bray, publisher of two books and a regular visitor to Blackpool, joins writer Amanda Brooke in conversation at 1.45pm for a conversational that will look at the more emotional side of writing. And finally on Friday, for those with a spirit for the supernatural, Helen Phifer talks to Sandra Mangan about her ghost thriller stories. All library events include drinks and a snack and tickets cost £3 with 50p off for library members.
