Volunteers needed for Stanley Park Volunteers are being sought to help at Stanley Park bandstand
T
he Friends of Stanley Park have issued a plea for more people to help them out during the events that take place through the summer.
The free bandstand events take place every Sunday between May and September, as well as an extra event on the August bank holiday Monday. People are needed to help with marshalling people at the events, as well as with clearing up afterwards. The first bands take to the bandstand this year on 31st May and will carry on until 27 September, the Chair of the Friends of Stanley Park is excited about the upcoming programme. Elaine Smith, said: ‘Yet again this year there are some excellent bands coming to the park for people to enjoy. As well as the regular array of brass and youth bands, we also have the return of the prestigious Stowe Big Band on 21 June. That will be fantastic event that lots of people can enjoy. However, these great events don’t put on themselves. We need volunteers to spare us a just a few hours of their weekend to put these kinds of shows on. In return, they get to spend their Sunday in the glorious Stanley Park listening to some fantastic music.’ 14
The first events listed are; Sunday 7th June: Frayed at the Edges and The Monster Squad, Classic Hard Rock, Funk, Disco and House at the bandstand. 1pm to 5pm Sunday 14th June: Touch the Bandstand with Touch the Pearl and guest DJ Ed Mahon spinning some funky summer tunes to get everyone in the mood. 1pm to 5pm Sunday 21st June: Stowe Big Band 11am to 1pm, Park School Brass Band 1pm to 1.45pm. Preston Concert Band 2pm to 4pm Sunday 28th June: Bob On and Spectral Rebel, Sorted and DJs. 1pm to 5pm Sunday 5th July: Kudos, Dark Blue Suits, Dirty Work, 1pm to 5pm. No need for businesses to panic despite slower growth A positive picture for Lancashire businesses was painted as the results of the latest Quarterly Economic Survey were revealed

tephen Gregson, of Moore and Smalley chartered accountants, gave an inspirational talk on the state of the county’s businesses following detailed responses to questions by companies across the county. The QES is compiled nationally by the British Chambers of Commerce and in Lancashire by the three Chambers, North and Western Lancashire, East Lancashire and Lancaster. Mr Gregson told the event at Preston’s College, attended by about 100 businessmen and women: ‘There has been a significant increase in the manufacturing sector in the recruitment of full-time jobs. This is one example of the ups and downs of the economy. We do not have to get too panicked about it. What comes with this is that we are getting a greater sense of predictability. We have a sense of what the risks are and we can do more planning for that. What it is suggesting with recruitment being down is a little bit of a cause for concern but maybe what we are seeing is that recruitment has gone down because there has been more invested in kit, and that is one way of getting worker productivity up.

NWL Chamber president Norman Tenray said: “While the figures are in a slight decline, I am actually really reassured because we can see a bit of continuity and a little bit of sustainability coming through. ‘The results over the past four years have shown that there is that consistency. Originally, for the first couple of years it was quite flat when we were really in deep recession but now we are coming out of recession we are starting to get some nice peaks and troughs, which is good because obviously if you go through a bit of growth you have got to consolidate and you have got to see those results come in and then you are going to invest. What I would urge any business out there to do is follow the QES, contribute to the QES and actually get along here and discuss the results with other businesses at this event because it is incredibly powerful. I use these results as one of the key indicators to help me make decisions within my business and I have found it incredibly accurate.’
He continued; ‘If anything signifies that people feel confident about the future it must be investment and recruitment. Investment has gone up. If you are thinking that the future might be better you might be thinking about going to the bank and asking for money for investment. Our experience is we are starting to get swamped with transactional work. We are getting more Lancashire Chamber of Commerce and more enquiries about buying and selling. Classic scones with Sweet Eve Strawberries and cream This classic British summertime treat is served with beautiful British strawberries.
Preparation time: 5 minutes Cooking time: 15 minutes Makes 8 scones You’ll need: 225g self-raising flour Pinch of salt 55g butter 25g caster sugar 150ml milk 1 free-range egg, beaten 400g punnet Sweet Eve strawberries Clotted or whipped cream to serve
Method: Preheat the oven to 220C. Lightly grease a baking sheet. Mix together the flour and salt and rub in the butter to form breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar and then add the milk a bit at a time until a soft dough forms. Turn on to a floured surface and knead gently. Roll out to a depth of about 2cm. Using a 5cm cutter, stamp out rounds and place on the prepared baking sheet. Gently knead any remaining dough together, roll out and cut more scones.
Continue until all the dough is used. Using a pastry brush, lightly cover each scone with the beaten egg. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes until well risen and golden. Meanwhile, slice the Sweet Eve strawberries and set aside. When the scones are ready, cool on a wire rack, then split and spread on a thick layer of cream. Top with slices of Sweet Eve strawberries.
