Wildlife bid for cemetery ozens of handmade bird boxes are hoped to bring wildlife back to a Blackpool Council green spot.

grass edges and picking up litter every Wednesday afternoon, as well as helping a decrepit old mortuary building be transformed into a break out kitchen area for the workers.
A group of community volunteers have created 72 wooden bird boxes to be installed onto trees across Layton Cemetery, as part of a second stage to make the area a more pleasant area to visit.
With the new bird boxes now being installed, the group is hoping it will help attract more wildlife back to the area too and has already started work on trying to build a host of bat boxes to be ready in the summer.
The volunteers, who are made up of adults with learning disabilities, built the boxes as part of their woodwork classes at the Blackpool Centre for Independent Living on Whitegate Drive.
Cllr Graham Cain, Cabinet Secretary for Blackpool Council, said: “This is a wonderful project. Not only does it help to improve the cemetery for everybody who visits but it also means that the community volunteers can put their work to good use.
All of the boxes have now been handed over to the cemetery staff to be placed in the tree tops across the 22 acre cemetery which opened back in 1873 on Talbot Road. The work is the second stage of the partnership work which has seen Layton Cemetery become the ‘best it has been for 40 years’ according to one local councillor. Layton ward councillor Martin Mitchell used the terms earlier this year when describing the work that the community volunteers, along with low level offenders from the community payback scheme and council officers, had done to keep the area clean and tidy. The groups carry out grass cutting, trimming of 18

How to COMMIT to a
Healthier Lifestyle
In order to lose weight, we should eat fewer calories and move about more… It seems so simple, if only it was that easy! Some people have more motivation, better willpower and less stress in their lives, while others struggle with shedding the pounds while negotiating the obstacle course called life. With summer round the corner, now is the time to make some lifestyle changes.
How do you make a start when you are feeling overwhelmed by the size of the task? How do you stick to the plan long enough to achieve the desired result? And how do you cope with setbacks?
Set goals...
If you don’t set a destination, how will you know when you get there? Once you know what you want to achieve, break it down to more manageable steps. Your personal trainer, sports coach or weight loss instructor can help you with this, as well as with keeping you on course.
Eat protein...
A sufficient amount of protein is necessary for many aspects of health and it also helps with appetite control by keeping you fuller for longer.

Don’t ban foods, find alternatives...
Don’t ban whole food groups from your diet. Resolutions such as “I am done with wine/ chocolate from tomorrow” will only lead to cravings. Instead, identify the culprits that sabotage your dieting efforts and replace them with a healthier option once a day. It is much easier to replace a cheese topping with a few slices of fresh tomato, than to give up cheese altogether. Keep the wine or chocolate in your eating plan, but learn to exercise control over where and when you have your treats.
Make your portions smaller...
The easiest way to do this is to use smaller plates and fill at least a third of your plate with vegetables.
Start with small steps...
When starting a new healthy eating plan, take small steps first. A radical clear-out of food cupboards is the easy part; sticking to eating vegetables every day can be more daunting. Resolve to eat vegetables with one meal a day to start with, and have a fresh fruit snack when you fancy something sweet. You can always go more radical later.
Find a way to enjoy activity...
Personal trainers despair over clients who force themselves to go for a run when they clearly ‘hate’ running. It really pays in the long term to find the type of exercise you enjoy. Try at least three

Health & Fitness different classes or have a go at a sport before you make a decision. A decade ago it may have raised eyebrows if you were middle-aged and wanted to join a ballet class, try gymnastics or visit a kickboxing club but these days anything goes.
Educate yourself...
If you don’t know what to eat or how to exercise, ask a professional. We can’t all be experts at everything. A professional will be glad to help and will have compassion – they know the pitfalls and have experience in handling the struggles their clients go through.
“I hate gyms...”
This is a common excuse used to avoid doing anything, but gyms are much more than just roomfuls of scary machines. Book a session with a trainer in the gym before you decide whether you like gyms or not. Once you know how to use various kinds of equipment, chances are you will enjoy it. Additionally, being surrounded by other people exercising can be motivating, and you will go home feeling much better than you would if you had just stayed in watching TV. Besides, most gyms now offer a timetable of varied classes, so everyone can find something they like. Remember, it is the gym manager’s job to work out what the customers want in their local gym.
Gardening counts...
If you dislike exercise, just accept it and find an alternative. Whether it is gardening, house chores or walking the dog, it all counts. Taking frequent breaks from sitting at the desk, standing up whenever you are on the phone, or doing press ups during advert breaks are just some of the examples of how to break up the cycle of inactivity.
Get a training buddy...
When you arrange to meet up with someone in the park or in the gym, it is harder to find excuses. Having an exercise buddy will encourage you to stick to your routine.

Remember your health... The more you exercise and the harder your workouts are, the more you need to rest. Good sleep, sufficient recovery time and nourishing food to supply the vitamins and minerals are necessary to keep you going. Learn to spot the signs of overtraining and if you get ill, get better before you resume training. This applies to colds as well as sports injuries. You are likely to pay for it later if you train with a heavy cold or a sore knee.
Train your mind too... Professional athletes train their minds as much as their bodies to manage their negative thinking patterns and counterproductive emotions. Dealing with negative emotions does not mean suppressing how you feel - acknowledging that you feel frustrated or angry can help keep you away from that tub of ice cream or bottle of wine.
When you hit an obstacle, suffer a loss or simply lose motivation, having the mental and emotional skills will help you get back on track rather than give up. Volunteer tours to show secrets behind Blackpool’s historical locations
A
group of Blackpool volunteers are celebrating five years of touring behind the scenes of some of Blackpool’s most interesting buildings. The Blackpool Heritage Guided Tours are made up of community heritage champions who have been trained up to know all the history and trade secrets of Blackpool locations. The volunteers went through a rigorous training session five years ago and now regularly deliver walking tours across the town every summer. This year, the volunteers have announced three separate tour locations, with visits taking place throughout the year. The first tour will teach visitors about the sparkling entertainment history of the Winter Gardens complex, touching on the world famous superstars who have performed their over the years, as well as focusing on the architectural history of the famous Grade II listed building.

The second tour will visit the mixture of landscape design and historical buildings and gardens that make up Blackpool’s Stanley Park. Created by Edwardian architect Thomas Mawson, the tour will explore the history of the park and culminate in a chance to climb the famous Cocker clock tower and take in the views from the top.
All tours are run by the expert, fully trained and knowledgeable guides, costing as little as £8 for adults and £4 for children.
Behind the doors of one of Blackpool’s most famous exports, this year’s tour will also include the chance for visitors to see where the resort’s famous Illuminations are made and maintained.

We have a policy to neuter all cats (when old enough) before rehoming. We carry out home checks of all prospective new owners and foster carers and we ask for an adoption donation of around £35. We have no background history so are unsure of their ages. They are friendly and are fine being handled. The need to be rehomed together and are suitable for older children. Their adoption fee altogether is £21.00 Valentino is an extra special cat looking for an extra special owner. He was found as an injured stray and an owner never came forward for him. He is a very friendly boy who loves a fuss and a cuddle. He came in with high blood pressure but please don’t let this put you off as it’s easily managed by a simple tablet that has to be given daily along with a renal diet which he enjoys as he loves his food! He may be suitable to live with another cat and ideally needs a quieter home. His adoption fee is £65.00 and he is neutered, fully vaccinated, flea’d, wormed and microchipped. Microchipping As of April 2016, the law now states that all dogs are to be microchipped by 8 weeks old. We have done numerous microchipping events out in the community this year and have so far chipped over 350 animals! We offer microchipping at the animal centre in Stalmine for a small donation and are happy to microchip dogs, cats, rabbits and even ferrets. Puppies can be chipped from 8 weeks old and kittens and rabbits can be done from 12 weeks old. Upcoming chipping events will be mentioned in future editions of the Focus. g t
