Clean up for Claremont community
L
ocal residents and councillors in a north shore community have been cleaning up their local area.
The Claremont community and environment group, which is comprised of ward councillors, residents and representatives of various agencies working in the local area held a skip amnesty last week to give the place a spruce up. A household rubbish amnesty took place on the 28th February across Claremont ward. This was a first for the Claremont ward and was very welcomed by the residents. A skip was available for residents to use and residents could also pre book rubbish collection appointments for the 4 hours of the amnesty. A massive total amount of 6.5 tons of rubbish was collected with additionally 1.14 tons of recyclable household items collected by the rover service. The amnesty was funded by contributions from Blackpool Council’s transience project and Great Places Housing Group. Claremont has like other areas of the town been affected by fly tipping, and rubbish dumping in alleys. 26
Cllr Lynn Williams, Chair of the Claremont community and environment group said: “The rubbish amnesty was never by itself going to resolve the rubbish and littering issues across Claremont - but we wanted it to raise awareness and encourage a more responsible attitude to rubbish disposal. “We have a number of other initiatives planned to deal with this problem which has a massive impact upon the area and people’s lives. Most importantly, if people allow rubbish to accumulate and just leave it in the front of their properties or at the back or, dump it in the street or alleys, the council housing enforcement team will take action people will be given notice to remove and failure to do so will result in fines and prosecutions if necessary.” Cllr Williams on behalf of the community group wanted to thank all those who supported, helped and took part, particularly the volunteers from Claremont first steps centre who worked incredibly hard both before and on the day, and also Great Places Housing Group, the transience programme and the Council’s housing enforcement team. The group will be organising another ward rubbish amnesty later in the year.

Free gym memberships for young women in Blackpool
A
re you aged 18-25 years old and female? Would you like to start the journey to a fitter, healthier new you?
Research from Sport England shows that millions of women and girls are afraid to exercise because of fear of judgement. Fewer women than men play sport regularly – two million fewer 14-40 year olds in total.
Sport Blackpool is offering up to 60 young female residents in the town an opportunity to start the New Year with a new approach to fun and fitness.
Cllr Maria Kirkland, Cabinet Member for Leisure Services at Blackpool Council, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for young women to get active, try out a new activity and boost their fitness levels at Blackpool Sports Centre, Moor Park Health and Leisure Centre and Palatine Leisure Centre.
Following a successful bid to secure funding from Sport England, and with support from Lancashire Sport Partnership, young women in Blackpool can apply for a free two month pass to use Sport Blackpool’s gyms, exercise classes and swimming pools.
“The initiative is a positive way to encourage greater participation and help young women to overcome any inhibitions and work out at their own pace.
Paralympian Shelly Woods will be supporting participants along the way, taking an ambassadorial role encouraging all to complete and attend each week.
“They will be able to try any of the exercise classes on offer and access the fitness suites at the three centres, supported by our experienced and supportive staff.
The three-time medallist will be visiting the three leisure centres across Blackpool providing inspiring messages and help to keep them motivated for the full two months.
“Once the two months is up, the participants will be encouraged to continue with their fitness programme through low cost social opportunities such as running groups plus the quality offers provided by the leisure centres.”
The funding from Sport England will bring £4800 investment into the area for the benefit of Blackpool residents. This unique offer forms part of ‘This Girl Can’, a national campaign developed by Sport England to get women and girls moving, regardless of shape, size and ability. 28
