Yeadon Way works update A project to preserve and repair Yeadon Way is now well underway and is progressing well
As this picture from the site shows, the road is barely recognisable from before works began with the surface and barriers having been removed and piling now taking place. A huge amount of work is being carried out by contractors Galliford Try to repair the structure of the road as part of a £3.6m scheme. There are three aspects of the work: Road stabilisation - At a number of weak points the existing road surface has been removed along with the barriers that line the road. Steel sheet piles will be installed up to 18 metres deep to improve the stability of the road. Securing the embankment – Down either side of Yeadon Way is an embankment that has become weaker over time. The sides are very steep and wouldn’t be built at that angle in modern day construction. These must be secured. Land drainage - Work to improve drainage in the area has already begun and is having a positive effect The work comes as a result of a gradual deterioration in the road over time. Many drivers will have noticed that, as you drive along Yeadon Way, there are a number of points where the road surface is bumpy. This is due to the structure underneath the road surface shifting considerably. The council successfully applied for funding from the Government to address those
problems which, if left to deteriorate further, would have led to the road being closed. The road, which connects the M55 with its town centre car and coach parks, carries huge volumes of local and tourism traffic, preventing congestion and is therefore vitally important. Cllr John Jones, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport said: ‘I visited the site along with our highways team and representatives from Galliford Try last week. Work is progressing well and I’m pleased Galliford Try and engaging with local residents, businesses and organisations to keep them informed. We stressed the importance of the work being completed in time for the Easter holidays because of the huge impact the start of the tourism season has on the local economy. Leisure centre expansions now open New gyms at Palatine and Moor Park leisure centres have now opened to the public. An extended 65 station gym at Moor Park Health & Leisure Centre was unveiled on Monday alongside the 45 station gym at Palatine Leisure Centre, which has been refurbished with windows and brand new state of the art fitness equipment being installed. Palatine Leisure Centre now includes state of the art Matrix gym equipment, one of the leading brands in cardio and resistance training machines, which also feature at Gateway Fitness in the Central Business District. The £414,000 expansion at Moor Park Leisure Centre also includes a large free weights area, a women’s only Feel Good Factory and dedicated exercise class and spinning studios. Meanwhile, the expansion at Palatine also has seen a refurbishment to the room to make it more appealing to gym-goers. Cllr Graham Cain, cabinet member for leisure and tourism, said: ‘Since the re-launch of Moor Park in 2011, it has proved exceptionally popular and we’re getting some really good feedback from people who visit it. But we’re not going to stand still. We’ve invested even more in to both centres to make them even better. People told us that they want more exercise machines and bigger studios so we’ve listened to their feedback and have done exactly that. Both new gyms are absolutely top quality and include some of the best fitness equipment around. Whether you want

a short jog on a treadmill or to pump some iron, there is something for everybody. The Feel Good Factory at Palatine has proved really popular as an alternative to the regular gym environment. The room is more relaxed and sociable and has been a hit with people who don’t want to join the more serious gym goers in the regular studio. Now we’ve brought it to Moor Park – I hope it will be just as successful. Blackpool’s 2014 visitor figures released
Blackpool has enjoyed one of its best tourism seasons for many years, a visitor research study has confirmed. After a huge upsurge in visitor numbers and overnight stays during the peak summer season, the latest independent Omnibus research shows that the resort saw further growth in September and October with over 1m adult visits in each of the two months. It means that, for 2014 as a whole, Blackpool experienced an increase of more than 300,000 adult visits – from 9.8m in 2013 to 10.1m in 2014. The latest research covering the September to December period confirms the enduring appeal of the Illuminations - with over half of the 3.5m adult visits directly associated with the annual Lights show. Visitor satisfaction levels in the autumn period rose to a record level of 95% compared to 88% in the same period in 2013.
Cllr Graham Cain, cabinet member for tourism and leisure said: “The latest research confirms that this has been one of the best tourism seasons for many a year. ‘Much of that is due to the investment we have made in a high-quality events programme, the summer-long run of Mamma Mia!, the Illuminations and, of course, the Blackpool’s Back destination marketing campaign which has showcased the resort to thousands of new visitors. To show overall growth of a third of a million visits across the year as well as a big increase in staying visitors during the peak summer season is hugely encouraging and a major endorsement of the investment we have made in the visitor economy.’
Friends Get Started in business Two friends with more than 15 years of combined experience in social care have joined forces to start their own business. Catherine Whitelow and Rachel Brown run ‘Create Care Training Ltd’ a new company which aims to ensure employers and employees working in social care have the skills and qualifications to deliver high quality care and support. The pair, both graduates, met at work and decided to go it alone to share their passion and work ethic with others. They contacted Blackpool Council’s Get Started service - part of the Start Up Lancashire service supported by the European Regional Development Fund – for help and with one-to-one support, mentoring, courses giving them the knowledge to start up their own company and the rest, as they say, is history. Catherine commented, ‘The staff at “Get Started” that provide the one to one support and deliver the courses are friendly, approachable and have a wealth of diverse knowledge and experience which they are willing to share. The service helped us to finalise our business plan, ensure legal requirements were in place and get our marketing campaign underway. Investing time to access the free training and networking events has been invaluable in securing the foundations of our business.’

The Fight Is On To Save Lives As Race For Life 2015 Launches In Blackpool Blackpool women are being urged to get the New Year off to a great start by signing up now to Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life 2015.

very hour, more than four people are diagnosed with cancer in the North West*. And that’s why Cancer Research UK is calling on women in Blackpool to fight back against this devastating disease by entering Race for Life 5k or 10k events at The Prom on Wednesday, July 01. As well as raising funds for life-saving research, taking part in Race for Life is an easy way to be more active – perfect for those setting themselves a fitness goal as their New Year’s resolution. Carrie Murphy, Cancer Research UK’s Blackpool Event Manager, said: ‘We’re urging women of all ages, shapes and sizes to take on Race for Life in their town and sign up now. Race for Life is non-competitive. It’s not about being fit or fast. Most women are able to walk 5k in an hour while chatting and having fun. he new look Harry Ramsden’s restaurant on the Promenade has donated £1000 to help ensure that 2015 is the most glittering year ever when Blackpool is once again lit up. Chris Walter, Head of Operations for Harry Ramsden’s, said: ‘The Blackpool Illuminations are an iconic and historic piece of British culture, which are enjoyed each year by locals as well as the millions of visitors the town attracts annually The team at Blackpool Illuminations work tirelessly on behalf of local businesses, including ourselves, to ensure the town continues to attract tourists each year. We are therefore delighted to be able to play our part in giving something back and pledging our support to Blackpool in this way.’ Although the annual lights season is now at an end after a very successful 2014 which saw millions of visitors flock to the resort to see the show, businesses are still being urged to show their support for the display by contributing financially. It follows donations from a huge range of businesses including official sponsors, BES Utilities, who showed their support for the resort by agreeing to kindly donate the electricity to power the display for 2014 and heavily discounted for 2015. Other key backers include, Beaverbrooks, eviivo, Burbage Holiday Group, KRS, Graham and Brown and McDonalds. The Friends of Blackpool Illuminations meanwhile, a group of volunteer local business people who strive to promote the display, have raised a further £13,000.

Cllr Graham Cain, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for tourism and leisure, said: ‘We welcome all donations and the key message from us is that it’s not too late to donate. It’s no secret that local Government funding is under huge pressure and as we’ve said many times, if businesses want the illuminations to continue to be the tremendous success they have been, we need to bring in bigger contributions. We would urge all companies, big and small, to look at the huge impact the Illuminations have on business in Blackpool and give back what they can to keep the display thriving.’ Last year’s Blackpool Illuminations followed an incredibly successful summer for the resort which included a full 10 week summer season of the world class stage ‘Mamma Mia!’ which grossed more than £3m at the box office, breaking all previous records. The latest Omnibus visitor survey (May-Aug figures) estimated that overnight stays increased by 350,000 compared to 2013 while overall adult visits also increased by around 200,000.
