Blackpool Music Festival 2014 Set across 30 venues across the fylde coast and featuring over 160 acts, this festival now in it’s second year is set to revitalise the local music scene Now in it’s second year of operation The Blackpool Music Festival is the biggest indoor multi-venue celebration of music on the fylde coast. Featuring a whole host of musical styles and genres across the board, there will be something for everyone across the many venues from St Annes through Blackpool and up to Poulton. There are between 25 -30 venues in total with over 160 acts over four days, it is a community led urban festival and all venues will be offering free admission. Festival stewards will be selling programmes and all the money raised will be donated to Streetlife Blackpool, a local charity providing support, shelter and direction to help vulnerable young people find their way. Although it mainly focuses on the wealth of local talent that we have on the Fylde Coast there are acts appearing from all over the Country and iThe Blue Room will even feature a host of acts from across Europe on Sat 11th Oct. Thumbs up for Switch On weekend The 2014 Blackpool Illuminations Switch-On Festival Weekend has been given a resounding thumbs-up. Featuring huge stars like Peter Kay, Little Mix and Pixie Lott, the seafront spectacular earned rave reviews from the vast majority of those in attendance. Businesses too have been reporting positive trends with many hotels being fully booked throughout the three day event. Now an analysis of the coverage of the event and the build up to it shows the coverage – based on buying a similar amount of advertising – was worth an estimated three quarters of a million pounds with this figure still rising. This included daily coverage from media partner Rock FM and the Bauer network, national and regional television coverage, numerous national newspaper reports and a wide range of reports on some of the most viewed websites in the world. The Switch-On Festival Weekend began with Britain’s most popular comedian, Peter Kay, switching on the Lights after a star-studded night of entertainment featuring some of the most popular names in British music. Superstar girl band, Little Mix, headlined the Friday night concert with support coming from Texas, Pixie Lott, Union J, Neon Jungle, George Ezra and Matt Cardle amongst others. Rock FM’s Hywel and Jamie, oversaw the festivities while the first ever Switch-On Food Festival ran throughout the day on Blackpool Promenade. Fireworks launched from the top of The Blackpool Tower as the lights turned on the Golden Mile and along the length of the town’s famous Promenade. The Friday night celebrations were then followed up two top quality nights of family shows on the Saturday and Sunday evenings. Saturday’s West End themed show included
performances from the cast of Thriller Live, Dirty Dancing – The Classic Show on Stage, Chicago, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Jon Lee of S Club 7 fame and friends performing songs from the Jersey Boys and Leanne Jones, star of Hairspray. Each of the acts wowed the crowd with their repertoire of familiar musical tunes. Sunday’s show, meanwhile, featured a number of top nineties acts including Atomic Kitten, Liberty X, 911 and Damage before Rebecca Ferguson headlined the show and brought the three day festival to a close. Councillor Graham Cain, Blackpool Council cabinet member for tourism and leisure said: ‘As always the incredible PR value that switchon generates alone – from the weeks and days of pre-event coverage to the newspaper, radio and TV coverage of the weekend – makes the investment more than worth it. Based on buying equivalent advertising, we estimate that value to be worth around three quarters of a million pounds. That’s an incredible boost for Blackpool’s tourism industry and just what we need.’ He continued ‘When you couple that with bringing a world class show like Mamma Mia! to Blackpool, the new Blackpool’s Back advertising campaign which has been so successful, the arrival of Illuminasia and the quality of our existing attractions, it really has been a very good year for the town on the tourism front. We hope the three day event will become an integral part of Blackpool’s calendar for years to come and the work to plan for another fantastic show for next year will start soon.’ Blackpool Illuminations will shine nightly until Sunday 9 November

Council couch tours town
A novel new way of listening to residents has been happening in Blackpool. In September and October a new ‘Council couch’ has been visiting fourteen spots around the town to listen to residents’ views on issues such as crime, housing, health, education and regeneration with three dates left to go this month. Senior officers from Blackpool Council have been sitting on the couch on different days, to talk to locals about the work that the authority is doing, and the plan to create a better Blackpool. It’s the first time an idea like this has been used in the North West before and follows in the footsteps of Plymouth City Council, who started a similar scheme around the south coast resort last year. The success of the scheme elsewhere has led to the initiative being adopted in Blackpool, as the couch has and will visit popular areas around the town to get people’s opinion on the work that the Council is doing. The portable council couch trailer has visitited different areas every Wednesday, visiting one location in the morning between 9am and 12noon, before moving to a different area between 1pm and 4pm in the afternoon. The idea is to engage with more residents to find out what services local residents prioritise, with all the suggestions contributing towards the new

Council plan for 2015/16. Neil Jack, Chief Executive of Blackpool Council, said ‘The Council couch is all about getting out into the community and finding different ways to talk to the people of Blackpool. It’s a great engagement tool and has been massively popular in Plymouth as a way to get the views of people who might not normally get involved in more formal ways like Area Forums or consultations. Our senior officers and I will be getting out and about and on to the couch - We’re going to be asking people what they think of the Council’s plan for the future, as well as giving them the opportunity to shape what our policies should be in the coming years. It’s going to be a relaxed setting where anybody can just walk over and have a chat with us over a cup of tea for as long or as little as they want and I hope to see lots of people getting involved.’ The remaining dates for the couch this month are. Piece of cake as Kelly gets started Setting up a new business is a piece of cake. That’s the message from local mum Kelly Ellison, who got started as an independent businesswoman by setting up a baking activity shop in the town centre. Her new company, Cake Tin Delights, has been set up with the help from Blackpool Council’s Get Started team, which is part of the Start Up Lancashire project, supported by European Regional Development Fund. The business, based on Topping Street, offer bespoke cakes, as well as holding special activities like cupcake parties, adult baking classes and a children’s summer club. The mum of three has been baking cakes all her life, and thanks to Blackpool Council, is now hoping to cook up a storm with her new business. Kelly said ‘It has been a tough journey, juggling family and setting a business up, however, with help, support and perhaps more importantly belief, from the Get Started Team, it has become a reality. We are doing really well, and have many bookings already’

Cllr Fred Jackson, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for urban regeneration, added ‘It’s always great to see a new business get started We helped to set up 100 businesses last year, and are well on our way to meeting that target again. Roads could go two-way to improve traffic flow A consultation was launched on a proposal to make two Blackpool town centre roads two-way.
Last month Blackpool Council wrote to local residents and businesses to propose changes to Coronation Street between Hornby Road and Adelaide Street and Hornby Road between Park Road and Coronation Street. The measure is designed to help improve traffic flows and could provide the following benefits; Considerably less bus traffic on Coronation Street, Improved access to Hounds Hill car park, Simpler access and reduced journey time to the shopping centre and other town centre businesses, Simpler access to the Hounds Hill car park (access to is currently only possible to traffic coming from Central Drive via an indirect route along Albert Road, South King Street and back along Adelaide Street.) The proposal follows discussions at the Highways Consultative Forum – the new group set up by Blackpool’s cabinet member for highways and transport, Cllr John Jones, to 32
improve communication with businesses and residents on highways issues. The suggestion was widely supported by local residents and businesses at the forum. The proposal also included a further measure which could help businesses – the introduction of a number of new loading and/or parking bays on the west side of Coronation Street with the existing car parking arrangements on the eastern side remaining as they are. Cllr Jones said ‘We believe these measures could have a significant positive impact on traffic flow in the town centre and this has been widely supported within the Highways Consultative Forum. What we want to do is hear what local residents and businesses in the town centre think. We’ve written to a large number of people locally but the consultation is not exclusive to people who receive the letter. I want to hear whether people think this would be of benefit and we’re always happy to hear other constructive suggestions.’

HOW TO MAKE A TRADITIONAL JACK O’LANTERN STEP 1: The traditional scary face is very straightforward to make. Cut a lid in the top of the pumpkin around the stem so that you can scoop out the insides. A good rule of thumb is that the lid should be about two-thirds the diameter of the pumpkin. Take a sharp, long-bladed knife and, holding it at an angle, cut a circular or hexagonal-shaped lid. Holding the knife at an angle when making the cut will help ensure the lid does not fall into the empty pumpkin. Use a large spoon to scoop out the insides - the seeds etc., then gently scrape the walls clean and the base until it is flat.
STEP 2: Put the pumpkin on a table and turn it until you decide which side you want to cut. Using a fine permanent marker, draw on the face, and using a sharp knife with a firm, short blade, carefully follow your guidelines. Once all the cuts have been make, remove the pieces by gently pushing them from the inside out. For more complicated patterns use a stencil pinned to the pumpkin, prick the motif onto the pumpkin’s surface using a thick needle, join the dots with a marker pen and cut.
STEP 3: Onto the flat inside base of the pumpkin place a tea light. White candles will make the lantern glow most effectively, although for a more spooky effect, put the candle in a coloured glass holder.

PICKING YOUR PUMPKIN... Rule one is to buy a pumpkin of good size. A small one will be fiddly to cut and something the size of a handball will look a bit pathetic. A good average size is 30-40 cm tall, with a well rounded shape. When selecting your future lantern, check for damage and bruising, and reject any with injury, for they will not last so long. Also, do not carry a pumpkin by its stem as this will injure it.

New project to help disabled youngsters in to work
A project to help young people with disabilities into full time work has started its first term. Project Search, a programme run by Blackpool Council, The Royal Mencap Society (Mencap), Blackpool and the Fylde College and the town’s three special schools Park, Woodlands and Highfurlong, has opened its doors to ten new pupils this week. The young people will undergo a year of classroom based activities at the heart of Blackpool Council, in its offices on Bickerstaffe Square, as well as gaining work experience within the Council, in order for them to graduate into full time employment in May. The students will take part in two months of learning skills to make them more employable, before going out in to different areas of the Council to gain work experience in their chosen career. The students work with special education teachers from Blackpool and the Fylde College, as well as a support worker from Mencap, to help the pupils achieve their goal of a permanent job. Jake Branson, 19, from Layton, said ‘I hope this will help us get a full time job. I’d like to work in a hotel as a chef so the programme is helping me to learn new skills like handling cutlery, team building and social skills.’ Lisa Marie Kent, 19 from Central Blackpool, added ‘I want to learn skills like hygiene so that I can do in to jobs like cleaning or maybe even catering. If I didn’t try this project then I don’t know what I would do – I hope it will help me find a job.’ Andrew Bradley, 20, from Marton added ‘I want to work in computers and IT so this project will give me opportunities and new skills that will help me work in a new environment and help me in the community.’ Rachel Baldwin, a job coach at Mencap, said: ‘I’ve met all the new interns and their families

and we are excited about the opportunities this project offers. This is a great chance for young adults in Blackpool and ties in with our goal to support young people with a learning disability into paid employment. We are delighted to be working in partnership with Blackpool Council and Blackpool & Fylde College to deliver on this important work.’ Julie Atkinson is one of the specialist practitioners from Blackpool and the Fylde College who is helping the new recruits. ‘This is an exciting project that we all want to work,’ she said. ‘The college is delighted to be working in partnership with Mencap and Blackpool Council with these supported internships to prepare these young people for employment.’ Cllr Kath Rowson, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for adult social care, said: ‘This is a really good project to help get young adults in to work. Having a disability should not be a barrier towards getting in to work and becoming independent so our aim at the end of this year is to make sure that we can help all ten of these students in to permanent and full time jobs.
