Thousands enjoyed Ride the Lights 2015 Thousands of cyclists descended on Blackpool Promenade for the resort’s annual Ride the Lights event
T
he popular free event sees the seafront stretch fully closed to vehicles for one night only between 6pm and 10pm to allow cyclists to get a sneak preview of the Blackpool Illuminations ahead of the annual switch-on. Ride the Lights is attended by thousands of people every year and has become a firm favourite. As well as enjoying the ride, families, visitors and local residents were also well entertained at the Ride the Lights hub located at the Tower Festival Headland opposite The Blackpool Tower. Hundreds of children and families from all over the North West and beyond attended the event and many decorated their bikes with a lights theme with a myriad of colourful and exciting designs on display, including a stunning log flume-themed design and even a dodgem themed bike!
“I went along with my family and it was fantastic to see so many people enjoying themselves and having fun. “It’s the perfect event to get people in the mood for the Illuminations Switch-On on Friday and you can sense the excitement building. “We’re also looking for the best photos from the evening so I would encourage everyone to share their pictures via our Twitter page using the hashtag #ridethelights. Ride the Lights is the latest in a series of events designed to light up Blackpool’s summer and autumn.
Meanwhile bike doctors were on hand from CJ Cycles and Get Cycling who assisted lots of cyclists on the night to help with their cycling needs. The Radio Wave roadshow brought music and entertainment as well as live performances from Chris Atkinson, Hana joy, Amy Jo, Distracted and Matt Fitzgerald. Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said: “Ride the Lights is a fantastic event that yet again proved incredibly popular.

Grundy Light Exhibition 2015: SENSORY SYSTEMS 11 September – 8 November 2015
F
rom 2015 the Grundy Art Gallery begins a major new international programme of exhibitions involving light, to coincide annually with the Blackpool Illuminations. As part of “Lightpool”, this year’s exhibition is titled Sensory Systems and will see the gallery transformed into a series of chambers, each creating an environment and evoking a different sensory experience from the light. Each room will offer visitors a glimpse of how artists have been thinking and imagining with light; drawing, sculpting and painting with it to make their work. Some of the artworks invite visitors to participate. For instance Rafael Lozano Hemmer’s work Voice Array (2011) combines different senses, with visitors speaking into a voice box and watching the sound turn into abstracted patterns around the room. Another work, You and I, Horizontal (2005) by New York based Anthony McCall invites visitors to walk through a giant cone of light, created by smoke and projection. The remaining artists on display are each internationally recognised for their work in the medium: Angela Bulloch, Ann Veronica Janssens, and Conrad Shawcross. Councillor Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said: “The Grundy Art Gallery’s latest exhibition is a new and exciting offer to compliment the amazing Illuminations and Lightpool project. “I hope people do come and visit to truly appreciate this fascinating exhibition and world class artists. It’s interactive and family friendly and visitors can take

advantage of the extended opening hours during the Illuminations and firework events.” Curator Richard Parry said: “Light has been at the heart of how artists compose artworks for hundreds if not thousands of years; whether painting, photography or drawing, light is in many respects the starting point. For Sensory Systems, we’ve switched the focus to be on how artists have been fascinated by the properties of light itself, how they’ve painted, sculpted and drawn with light. “Light is a language that Blackpool speaks very well – everyone here has an understanding of it and how it can move people, so we’re excited to bring these extraordinary artworks here from around the world and exhibit them together for the first time.” Lightpool will revolutionise the Illuminations using new creative content, with the most exciting and noticeable change being the introduction of projection mapping technology, a stunning projection show will decorate The Blackpool Tower buildings. Upstairs in the Rotunda gallery, and running parallel with Sensory Systems, the Grundy also looks back on the history of the Illuminations, exhibiting rare early neon designs from the 1930s, drawn from the historic and unique Illuminations archive. New Las Vegas-style Projection Show Blackpool’s exciting new Las Vegas-style projection show launched last month
T
he show, which runs for around 10 minutes and projects onto the front of The Blackpool Tower building, is set to be one of the most unique and exciting free spectacles available anywhere in the UK. Using the latest in digital mapping projection technology and created by designers who have worked on the World Cup Final and the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, the show brings The Blackpool Tower building to life, gives a nod to Blackpool’s history and incorporates music and iconic imagery. The projection show is part of this year’s Blackpool Illuminations display (Sept 4 – Nov 8) and is funded thanks to a £2m grant from the Coastal Communities Fund along with contributions from Blackpool Council and LeftCoast.

New strategy to protect heritage needs A new strategy is set to protect more of Blackpool’s beloved old buildings
B
lackpool Council’s Built Heritage Strategy will lay out how the authority plans to preserve and promote the town’s historical assets over the next five years. It will also aim to encourage more members of the local community to get involved with the town’s heritage, as well as allowing them to suggest buildings that they think should be classed as valuable to the town’s history. The strategy will bind Blackpool Council to preserving the town’s heritage assets until at least 2020. The strategy outlines three main themes where the Council will work to ensure heritage assets are protected. These include · Protecting and conserving built heritage; this theme deals with the protection, management and enhancement of heritage buildings, whether they are publically or privately owned. · Community Participation; this theme is essentially concerned with the role that the community - taken in its broadest sense - can play in pursuing the objectives of this strategy. · Advocacy & Promotion; this theme seeks to generally increase awareness of the importance of heritage to the community in Blackpool and to visitors. A section of the strategy could also create a nomination system for local listing open to everyone to ensure that the public have a real say in protecting their local historic buildings. It will also commit the Council to enforcing the protection of buildings from inappropriate changes, as well monitoring the condition of heritage assets. The strategy is the latest in a number of techniques that Blackpool Council is using to protect its historical buildings. A quarter of the town’s listed buildings now belong to Blackpool Council, with huge restorations works currently taking place at both The Blackpool Tower and the Winter Gardens. The emphasis on heritage is driven by the Council’s desire not to lose more historical buildings like The Derby Baths and the South Shore Open Air Baths, which were both demolished back in the 1980s. 32

Some of our local landmarks are very important to individual areas and help to connect neighbourhoods today back to where they came from in the past. “I like to think that this strategy encourages investment and promotion of these famous buildings, while at the same time rigorously defending them from being destroyed. “That said, I am looking forward to hearing what the public have to say and would encourage everybody to come to Stanley Park on Saturday and have a look through the plans in full.” Joan Humble, Chair of Blackpool Civic Trust added: “We have worked closely with the Council on this and all the local heritage groups and societies were given the opportunity to have an input into the draft we’re being consulted on. “We made quite a few points about things like incorporating local knowledge and wider consultation in advance on bigger developments which has all been included’.

DO YOU TAKE YOUR DOG FOR A WALK REGULARLY? IF SO, YOUR EYES AND EARS ARE NEEDED! Blackpool dog walkers are being asked to ‘take a lead’ in fighting crime by reporting anything suspicious they see whilst out and about. Already, a number of pet owners have signed up to ‘Dog Watch’ in Blackpool, which has been initiated by the Police People take their dogs out for a walk every day come rain or shine, with many regularly taking the same route multiple times per day. Their eyes and ears could be invaluable in getting information to the Police, who, with the best will in the world, cannot be on the scene at exactly the same time as a crime happens. With hundreds of dog walkers out and about, many of whom have mobile phones, they can report incidents to the Police very quickly, meaning, a crime could be averted, or at least investigated promptly. It is possible that they will see something going on, such as vandalism, anti-social behaviour, or even a burglary, which should be reported to the Police immediately. Many dog walkers, who have witnessed crimes, admitted that they “didn’t know the number to ring for the Police”. With a ‘Dog Watch’ kit, containing a keyring, torch, poop bags and card featuring contact details for the Police, (which you will receive once you sign up to ‘Dog Watch’), dog walkers will have the phone numbers to call the Police which are: 101 for non-emergencies or 999 for emergencies.

You could also try using the Police online email link too, (see below). Via this link, you can instantly report a non-emergency crime or suspicious behaviour, there is also an option to request a Police Officer, PCSO or Police staff member to contact you, plus you may report lost/found property or look at vacancies within the Police. Let’s not forget other information that can also be reported to the Police, such as vulnerable or elderly people living alone who may need help or perhaps someone may be in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, or exhibiting strange behaviour, which will need looking into by professionals. As a Dog Watch member you may notice something out of the ordinary such as, a person’s milk hasn’t been taken in, or their curtains remain drawn all the time, when normally they are open at a certain time, you can report this to the Police. In fact, anything unusual can be reported by dog walkers and the difference they can make to a vulnerable, elderly or unwell person’s life is enormous by making a simple phone call or using the Police’s email link.
