Blackpool campaign urges women to ditch the beds!
T
here’s no such thing as a safe tan, yet local women are still risking their lives for the sake of a golden glow.
Research carried out by Blackpool Council revealed 60% of sunbed users are still unaware of the cancer risk, despite the increase in public campaigns and bad press surrounding them. Sunbeds give out harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays that damage your skin and can make it look wrinkled, older or leathery. The UV rays from sunbeds can also damage the DNA in your skin cells, and over time this damage can build up to cause skin cancer. Sunbeds can sometimes be marketed as a ‘controlled way’ of getting a ‘safer tan.’ But actually, sunbeds are no safer than exposure to the sun itself, and the amount of UV people receive varies enormously too. Dr Arif Rajpura, Director of Public Health, said: “Sunbeds are incredibly dangerous due to their intense UV rays and, despite the risks, our research shows women are still choosing to use them. “ W h a t ’s particularly alarming is that using a sunbed for the first time before the age of 35 increases your risk of developing melanoma – a deadly f o r m of skin cancer – by nearly 60%.” Cllr Amy Cross, Cabinet Member 14
for Reducing Health Inequalities, said: “Our campaign aims to send out a strong and emotive message to young women about how dangerous sunbeds are. There are still so many myths about the damage they cause to your skin and we hope to dispel some of these.” From 2010 to 2014, there were on average 43 new cases of malignant melanoma in Blackpool alone, which is significantly higher than England as a whole. Local mum of two, Emma Lyons, 37, was diagnosed with skin cancer after using sunbeds only once a week when she was a teenager. At 21, Emma found a new mole on her body but didn’t think much of it as she had a few already. Within a few months, it grew from a tiny dot to about 5mm. It was also black, but regular shaped and not uneven like a lot of the photos you see in what to look out for. Emma said: “I didn’t use them as much as you’d think you’d need to, to cause skin damage and I stupidly thought a tan looked good, ‘healthy’ even. I wanted to look nice and thought I tanned easily so it wouldn’t be a problem. “I went to see my GP who wasn’t concerned but I asked if I could get it checked by a dermatologist and luckily they referred me to the hospital. A couple of days later they told me it was melanoma. It was such a shock. “I think a lot of people think skin cancer isn’t as ‘serious’ as other cancers but melanoma is lifethreatening. I find it hard to believe people still use sunbeds – I will never use one again.” If you’re looking for a tan, the message is clear – fake it, don’t bake it! Stars come out for big switch-on party
A
spectacular line-up of musical talent will perform at the 2017 Blackpool Illuminations Switch-On concert, it can be revealed today.
acclaimed as one of the world’s great dance acts, they will be bringing another unique set to the SwitchOn stage.
The biggest night in Blackpool’s events calendar, which is being staged in association with MTV, will feature headline performances by Example and DJ Wire, Conor Maynard, Diversity and Louisa Johnson.
Also returning for a second year, are R3wire and Varski, the Club MTV presenters and record producers, who brought the house down in 2016, making the concert one of the most talked-about in Illuminations SwitchOn history.
The free concert, to be held on the Tower Festival Headland Arena on Friday 1 September, also sees the return of Club MTV DJs R3wire and Varski, who took last year’s event by storm.
Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to confirm such an amazing line-up for this year’s Friday night Switch-On celebration.
International rapper and songwriter Example has performed to sell-out audiences across Europe and worked alongside global stars including Calvin Harris and Chase & Status. He has also acted in numerous movies.
“This year’s show follows on from last year when the collaboration with MTV created one of the best Switch-On concerts in living memory. There’s a really exciting mix in the 2017 line-up and we hope that everyone will enjoy the show, Blackpool looks forward to welcoming these talented artists.”
He will be joined at the Switch-On party by the hugely-talented Louisa Johnson - at 17, the youngest ever winner of The X Factor, who went on to secure major hits with Tears and So Good selling over 1 million singles.
The Friday night celebration will start with a “Blackpool Introduces” showcase featuring the best of talent from across the Fylde Coast, prior to the start of the main show.
