Still rocking on with Tommy A new play written by Bobby Ball is coming to the Marine Hall in Fleetwood later this year, with an all-star cast including Bobby, Tommy Cannon, Stu Francis, Johnny Casson and Linda Nolan.

A

unique comedy play, The Dressing Room gives the audience a sneak preview into life behind the scenes. Set backstage in the dressing room, each act waits their turn to be called to stage. One by one they make their performance before returning to the hub of activity where the gossip and misunderstandings continue. Talking about the show, Bobby Ball commented; ‘I’m really excited to bring this show to Fleetwood. I love to be out on stage and I’m really happy to be working with such a great bunch of performers. The show is a part variety, part play – or “playriety” as I like to call it! The audience gets to watch each star perform their own variety act as well as see the little things you don’t usually get to see that go on back stage – the gossip, what we think of the audience, how we think 9 the show is going … and lots more. It’s a new idea, something that hasn’t been done before and we are all very much looking forward to it.’

Bobby Ball and Tommy Cannon arriving for the British Soap Awards 2013

The Dressing Room is at Marine Hall, Fleetwood on Friday 23 October, at 7.30pm. Tickets are on sale now at £15, with concessions at £13. To book call 01253 887693 or book online at www. marinehall.co.uk

Money Matters

How to haggle for the best deals By Martin Lewis Haggling isn’t just a skill for market stalls, these days where it really pays is at call centres. And if you’re a Sky customer there’s no better time to put your haggling skills to the test, as some Sky TV customers are facing hikes of over £50 a year. Yet this isn’t just for Sky. It works for other TV firms, mobile, TV, broadband, breakdown and more. Last year on my site, I polled over 7,000 people who tried to call-centre haggle, to see how successful they were company by company. The results are staggering, at Sky 86% succeeded in some form of discount, the AA 84%, TalkTalk 83%, Plusnet 82%, Virgin media 80% and RAC 78%. In other words, for every five people who tried, four got a deal. And don’t think the amounts are trivial either, here’s just some of the successes people have tweeted me in Sky’s current round of price hikes… “Just saved £315 a year with a good old haggle with Sky, cheers Martin.” “Phoned up and in 10 mins it’d knocked £134 off my bill. No change to services or terms. Thank you!” “Managed to save almost 50% by calling. Firm but polite with a clear message throughout my call.” 10

So don’t be shy, it’s time to tool up and get a haggle on. Here are my top ten tips (but for you, I’ll do it in 9)...

1. Benchmark the best deal.

It’s important to have the factual arsenal. Research the deals, discounts and codes that are available for new customers, as a basis for negotiation. Here’s a quick rundown for each of the main haggle areas. Digital TV: For example, you can currently get 25% off all Sky TV bundles and £75 bill credit, compare this with what you will be paying. You can use this figure to haggle with Sky or Virgin. See www.mse.me/digitalTV for all the deals. And of course the cheapest digital TV option is Freeview. It’s a one-off cost of around £20 for a box and there’s no monthly subscription. Breakdown cover: If you go via a cashback site, you can effectively sign up for basic AA or RAC cover for under £20. See www.mse.me/ breakdown for full best-buys. Broadband: Here the best deals are all promo offers. A common level is line rent and broadband for £16 a month, plus a £100 high street voucher. Full best-buys in www.mse.me/broadband.

2. Timing is crucial.

Haggling works best when you’re near or beyond the end of your contract as then they have a real risk you’ll leave. There’s no harm in giving it a try when you’re not, if you struggle then diarise when you’re nearing the end (you can give Sky notice of leaving 31 days before the end of your contract) and call back then.

Advertise your business call 0800 970 7687 or email info@link-mag.co.uk

Business & Finance 3. The haggling Holy Grail is the customer retention department.

If you’re coming to the end of your contract, or are out of it, then you’re wielding a powerhouse weapon: customer loyalty. If they don’t offer the deal you want, tell them you’re going to leave. This means you get put through to what they externally call “disconnections”, but internally is called “customer retentions”. There the staff ’s job is to keep you, and they have massively more discretion to offer you deals to do so.

4. Use charm, chutzpah, cheek and a smile.

Aggression or anger will just put their back up. You’re asking for a discount, and they’re just as much within their right not to give it as you are to leave.

Aim for polite, firm and non-combative.

5. Use the phrases that pay. You may find that the customer service rep will only offer a small discount at first, but if you don’t agree with the price use phrases like:

n I’ve worked out my monthly budget, and my absolute max is £[insert price here]/month n [TalkTalk/Virgin/BT] can do it for less... n I need to think about it... n I think my husband / wife will go bonkers if I pay that... 11 a lot of money... n It’s still

n What’s the very best you can do?

6. Don’t panic if it calls your bluff and says it’ll disconnect you.

Some people worry and get nervous to try this in case they’re disconnected. My easy ‘get out of jail free’ card on this is the phrase: “Hold on, I’ll call you back on that. I’d like to check with my wife/ husband/dog/Aunt Fanny first.”

7. Ask if it can throw in extras.

If it won’t slash the price, see if it can include any extras, like free calls or extra channels, bigger download limits, or one level higher breakdown cover

If they don’t offer the deal you want, tell them you’re going to leave. This means you get put through to what they externally call “disconnections”, but internally is called “customer retentions”

8. If you fail? Try, try and try again.

I’ve heard rumours that different staff members have quotas of how many deals they can do. Even if not true, it feels like that to many. You may have called the wrong person at the wrong time. So call back a few days later and speak to someone else. This works for many people.

9. Vote with your feet.

If you don’t get what you want and other firms offer the same for less, then you should seriously consider leaving and go grab one of those deals.

Bargain second hand goods up for grabs Blackpool residents are being reminded that they can pick up a host of bargain buys this summer

R

efurbished washing machines, dishwashers, tumble dryers and even computers are all available to purchase from as little as £65 at Blackpool Council’s Reuse shop. The Re-use store is based on the upper level of the tip at Bristol Avenue and sells a large variety of second hand items at knockdown prices. As well as recycled white goods, sets of golf clubs, books, musical instruments and furniture are all available to buy from the store, which is open six days a week, Friday to Wednesday, between 10am and 3.45pm. Each of the products has been diverted from landfill and repaired, refurbished and tested, ready to sell on. The money raised in the store goes towards improving recycling services across Blackpool, while a large donation is donated to the Mayor’s Charity. Cllr Christine Wright, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for promoting the reuse store, said: ‘It’s no secret that the council’s services are under a lot of pressure due to cuts in our grant from central government. So when residents come and buy products from the reuse store, not only are they getting a fantastic 13they are also helping to improve rebargain but use and recycling in Blackpool. So far the store has proved really popular, however we need

people to continue to visit to keep it open. Not only are the items cheaper to buy but there are some real treasures to be found for those people keen to hunt out a bargain. All the money spent in the shop is reinvested back in to the community, either by keeping our popular recycling initiatives like Rover running or by helping to train and keep local people in work.’ If you want to buy anything from the re-use store or the electrical workshop, visit the tip on Bristol Avenue or call the office on 476317.

Summer Cooking

Beautiful Berries This wonderfully substantial warm salad has a sweet and sharp BerryJewel raspberry dressing that brings it to life. Although it takes a long time to get the lamb meltingly tender it is almost entirely hands off - a great dish to get started in the oven before you go for a weekend walk. Serves 6-8 What you will need For the lamb 1 tbsp olive oil 4 large cloves garlic, crushed 1 tbsp cumin seeds, roughly ground tsp dried thyme 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp smoked paprika salt & freshly ground black pepper 2kg bone-in lamb shoulder 2 x 400g tins chickpeas, drained & rinsed to serve 235g salad spinach, washed & well drained 225g punnet BerryJewel raspberries 150g pecans For the dressing 225g punnet BerryJewel raspberries 100ml water 3 tbsp balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp runny honey Salt & freshly ground black pepper, to taste Method In a small bowl, mix together the olive oil with the garlic, cumin, thyme, cinnamon and smoked paprika and season generously with salt and freshly 14

ground black pepper. Using a sharp knife, pierce 1 centimeter deep holes all over the lamb - this will help the spice flavour to get deep inside the meat. Rub the marinade all over the lamb, pushing inside the holes you have made. Place the lamb in a large baking tray, cover with cling film and set aside to marinate at room temperature for 2 hours, or overnight in the fridge. Preheat the oven to 150ºC/130ºC fan/gas 2. Remove and discard the cling film and pour 200ml cold water into the roasting tin. Cover tightly with foil and cook in the oven for 5 hours it won’t need checking or turning so it’s fine to leave it undisturbed. After the lamb has had its 5 hours

cooking, remove from the oven and discard the foil. Increase the oven temperature to 180ºC/160ºC fan/gas 4. Using a large metal spoon, spoon off and discard as much fat as possible providing you don’t stir the sauce it will be floating on top. Stir the chickpeas through the remaining juices, and return to the oven, uncovered, for a further hour. Whilst the lamb is in the oven for the final hour, make the dressing by placing all the ingredients into a small saucepan. Set over a medium high heat and bring up to the boil. Boil steadily for about 5 minutes until the BerryJewel raspberries have broken right down and you are left with a shiny, deep coloured sauce. Taste to check the seasoning, adding salt and pepper as desired and a little more honey if it is too sharp. Strain through a sieve to remove the pips and set aside to cool. Toast the pecans in a dry frying pan until they are deep golden brown and smell lovely and nutty. Tip onto a board and roughly chop. Set aside. After the final hour in the oven, take the lamb out and transfer to a large plate or board. Using 2 forks, flake the meat into bite sized pieces. To serve, divide the spinach leaves between individual plates and scatter over the BerryJewel raspberries and pecans. Spoon the shredded lamb and some chickpeas over the top and drizzle on a little dressing. Serve the rest of the dressing alongside in a small jug.

Warm salad of Middle Eastern pulled lamb and chickpeas with BerryJewel Raspberries

Persian Jeweled Rice with BerryJewel Raspberries, Walnuts and Parsley Serves 6 as a side dish Based on the classic Persian dish, Javaher Polow, this fruity rice is truly fit for a king. It makes a great side dish for a spicy stew or a succulent roast chicken. The buttery golden crust that develops on the bottom of the pan is absolutely delicious. For the rice 300g basmati rice A generous pinch saffron threads 150g dried cranberries 2 tbsp olive oil 60g unsalted butter 1 large onion, finely chopped 1 cinnamon stick 1 tsp cardamon pods, bruised with the flat of a knife 1 tsp cumin seeds Salt & freshly ground black pepper To serve 100g walnuts, roughly chopped 225g punnet BerryJewel raspberries A generous bunch of parsley, chopped Finely grated zest from 1 orange 1 garlic clove, very finely chopped Method Put the rice in a sieve and rinse under cold running water. Tip into a bowl and cover well with cold water. Set aside to soak for 1 hour. Add the saffron to a small heatproof glass and cover with 2 tablespoons of boiling water, then set aside to soak. Add the cranberries to a small heatproof bowl and cover in boiling water, set aside to soak. Once the rice, saffron and cranberries are halfway through their soaking time, add the oil and half the butter to a deep, preferably nonstick, frying pan and set over a low heat. When the butter has melted, add the onion, cinnamon, cardamon and 15 cumin and fry gently for 30 minutes until the onion is soft and lightly caramelised, then turn off the heat. Drain the rice

and put it in a large saucepan. Pour over boiling water so it comes a generous 3 centimeters above the rice and set over a medium high heat. Boil for 3 minutes, then drain and rinse under cold running water to cool and drain well. The rice will have started to cook but will still have plenty of bite and the grains will not be fluffy. Stir the cooled rice through the onions in the frying pan, along with the saffron and soaking water, and the cranberries and their soaking water. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper, stirring well, then dot the surface of the rice with the remaining butter. Using the handle of a wooden spoon, make 5-6 holes through the rice all the way to the bottom of the pan - this helps it to steam evenly. Tear off a sheet of baking paper, scrunch it up under running water, shaking off the excess, then lay snugly over the surface of the rice. Cover tightly with a layer of foil and set over a very low heat. Cook, undisturbed, for 40 minutes, after which time the rice will be cooked and fluffy and a delicious buttery crust will have developed on the bottom. Whilst the rice is cooking, toast the walnuts in a dry frying pan until golden and smelling nutty. Tip into a bowl and stir through the BerryJewel raspberries, parsley, orange zest and garlic. Set aside. Once the rice is ready, remove and discard the paper. Lightly fork through the walnut, BerryJewel raspberry and parsley mixture and pile the rice onto a warmed serving dish. Scrape the lovely crunchy caramelised rice bits from the base of the pan and sprinkle over the top. Serve immediately.

BerryJewel Raspberry Fool with Almond Toffee Shards and Whole Raspberries Serves 6 This is a classic raspberry fool with a bit of a twist. Shards of crisp almond toffee are a great crunchy contrast to the soft creaminess of fool.

For the almond toffee 375g caster sugar 75g golden syrup 35g butter 50ml cold water 75g blanched whole almonds, roughly chopped ½ tsp vanilla extract ½ tsp fine salt For the fool 2 x 225g punnets BerryJewel raspberries 300ml double cream 300g Greek yoghurt Method Start by making the toffee. Line a baking sheet with a non-stick silicone mat or piece of non-stick baking parchment. Set aside. Add the sugar, syrup, butter and water to a large saucepan (the toffee will bubble up and at least double in volume whilst cooking). Set over a low heat and stir constantly until the sugar has dissolved and the butter has melted. Turn the heat up to medium and bring up to the boil. Boil, uncovered, for 7-10 minutes until a little teaspoon of the mixture turns into a hard ball when dropped in a glass of cold water. Start testing after 7 minutes, and keep on boiling until it is ready - it may take a little less or longer, depending on the depth and width of the pan you choose. If you are using a sugar thermometer it will read 138ºC. Turn off the heat and quickly stir through the almonds, vanilla and salt then pour onto the prepared baking sheet. Set aside to go cold - about 30 minutes. Once hard, break into thin shards using a strong sharp knife. This makes about double what you need for this recipe, but it stores well in an airtight tin for at least a week. To make the fool, add one punnet of BerryJewel raspberries to a bowl and mash up with a fork. Pour the cream into a large mixing bowl and whisk, either by hand or with an electric whisk, until it forms soft billowy peaks. Gently fold the Greek yogurt through using a large metal spoon until well combined. Then pour in the mashed raspberries and lightly fold. Finally fold through half the punnet of whole BerryJewel raspberries and the toffee shards and pour into a serving dish. Decorate the top with the remaining whole raspberries and toffee shards. Serve immediately.

From getting started to business growth Blackpool Council’s Get Started scheme has helped hundreds of Blackpool entrepreneurs make their business ideas a reality

B

ut a new programme of free training courses run is helping to ensure that getting started is just the beginning. The course also has two very special tutors – former Get Started graduates Kevin Donnelly and Mike Brown. With a little help from the Get Started service, which helps entrepreneurs learn how to start up and develop a business, they created XP Web Services. Offering everything from copyrighting to search engine optimisation, the company are now thriving and are keen to spread their message and help others. XP Web Services founder Kevin Donnelly, said: ‘You don’t have to be selling things online to need an online presence. Learning how to make more of your online business – from how you get your website found by Google, to making more of your web pages, blogs and social media – matters. And it matters whether you’re planning to be the next Amazon, or you’re a local plumber, hairdresser, baker or mechanic.’ The courses will give practical tips on implementing simple SEO techniques, analysing results and creating content (including blog posts and newsletters) to increase visitor numbers and drive sales. The first half day session on 29 June was oversubscribed but businesses can apply for a place on the next course at Blackpool Enterprise Centre on 19 November. Established businesses get their own course on 17 September.

Councillor Mark Smith, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for business and economic development, said: ‘Blackpool has long had a reputation for creating entrepreneurs – people with bright ideas who are prepared to turn them into viable businesses. Through initiatives such as Get Stated we’ve ensured there’s expert help available to turn good ideas into sound businesses. Now, by providing ongoing training and development like these online marketing courses, we’re also able to help support businesses for the long term.’ To book your place – or if you’ve got a bright idea for a business – call the Get Started team on 477147.

Council couch returns Blackpool Council’s novel way of listening to its residents returns this summer.

D

uring summer, the ‘Council couch’ has been visiting spots around the town to listen to residents’ views on issues such as crime, housing, health, education and regeneration. Senior officers from Blackpool Council sit on the couch on Tuesdays and Thursdays to talk to locals about the work that the authority is doing, and the plan to create a better Blackpool. The return of the initiative follows a successful start in 2014, which saw around 500 people come and speak about how they think the town could be even better. All the feedback will be compiled to create the Council’s strategic plan for the years 2015-2020. The couch’s first location this year was at the fields on Warren Drive on Tuesday 23 June, before it embarked on a tour across the full breadth of the town. Neil Jack, Blackpool Council’s Chief Executive, said: ‘Last year’s council couch was a real success in terms of getting out into the community and understanding people’s needs and priorities. Over 500 people turned up to tell us what we are doing well and what we could do better and I am hoping for an equally good turnout again this year. We’ve listened to people’s feedback about the couch and have also provided a number of evening events this year, that can be attended by people who still want to speak to us but have work commitments. This is a really innovative way of speaking to local residents and getting opinions on what we

should be doing to make our town better for everybody. I hope to see lots of people turn up.’ The remaining dates of the 2015 council couch are: 30 July, Palatine Library, 2pm – 5pm. 4 August, TAB office, Gorton Street, 2pm – 5pm. 6 August, Stanley Park by the cafe, 2pm – 5pm. 11 August, Moor Park Leisure Centre car park, 10am – 1pm. 13 August, St Martins Road (Western end), 2pm – 5pm. 18 August, St Johns Square, 2pm-5pm Further information can be found at www.blackpool. gov.uk/councilcouch

Hospital fundraiser offers Peace of Mind A hospital Summer Fete has helped to raise money to enhance the care given to people with dementia

C

lifton Hospital’s fete was held on Saturday 4th July, raising a total of £1,900 which will go towards Blue Skies Hospitals Fund’s Peace of Mind dementia appeal. The event was opened by Ian Johnson, Chairman of Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, who said: ‘This fete was another great fundraising event for Clifton Hospital and the care it offers to local patients with dementia. It was pleasing to see so much happening in our hospital, and the people who turned up to make it a success. This event was all about Clifton, and although there may not always be blue skies outside, there will always be Blue Skies inside helping to enhance the care we give to our patients.’ Peace of Mind will pay for a secure and interactive garden at Clifton Hospital and a memory corridor to help patients with dementia recall their earlier years. Linda Broadbent, Ward 1 Manager at Clifton Hospital, said: ‘The day went really well, and we’re so pleased the weather held out for us. We had lots going on, from plant and book stalls and face painting for the children to a top prize raffle which has helped to raise a lot of money for this important campaign. The garden and works we are raising money for will go a long way in enhancing the care we can give to our patients who have dementia. Thanks to everyone who showed up on the day, including Age UK Blackpool and District, which 17Peace of Mind, Blue Skies Hospitals Fund is supporting and to Horwich Farm which provided a holiday in the Peak District for our raffle.’

Peace of Mind was launched at Clifton Hospital’s Christmas Fair in November 2014 by Jimmy Armfield CBE. Since then it has attracted support from staff who have held sponsored walks, cake sales and supermarket bag packs. Amanda Bennett, Head of Fundraising, said: ‘The Peace of Mind appeal is very important to Blue Skies Hospitals Fund, so it’s great to see that staff at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals are really getting behind it to raise as much money as they can. The event at Clifton was thoroughly enjoyable, and it was lovely to see so many families having fun whilst raising money to help enhance care to local dementia patients.’ For more information about Peace of Mind, please visit www.blueskieshospitalsfund.co.uk/ dementiaproject.shtml

The future’s bright, the future’s cloudy No more need for memory sticks and CD’s at Blackpool Libraries with new Cloud Technology

B

lackpool Library users are being urged to ditch their memory sticks and CD’s and embrace new cloud-based technology. Blackpool Council’s library service, which runs Central, Anchorsholme, Boundary, Layton, Mereside, Moor Park, Palatine and Revoe Libraries, have recently taken delivery of more than 100 new Google Chrome-based computers. The clever new machines are perfect for all the usual tasks that library users carry out, from word processing and producing documents to searching the internet, using email, gaming and much more. However, the new computers also make storage much easier using cloud-based ‘virtual’ storage systems, removing the need for portable storage systems like memory sticks or CDs. The key is for members get themselves a Google account. This will not only allow library members to print documents but it will also unlock a huge amount of other advantages, from storing all your documents to completely personalising your web browsing experience, there are a massive range of bonus features. 19

familiarise users with how the new computers work and how to set themselves up to print. Cllr Gillian Campbell, Blackpool Council’s Deputy Leader, said: ‘Our new Google Chrome-based machines are a huge upgrade on our old computers and allow users to do so much more. There are always staff on hand to help out if you’re confused or unfamiliar with the technology and we’re also running courses to help people familiarise themselves with the system. The new equipment will make using the computers a lot easier and hassle-free than before in a way that will benefit absolutely everyone. By installing these new computers, the Council is investing in one of the most important parts of the local community – libraries – which local people always tell us are hugely important to them.’ The new equipment, which does contain USB ports but are without CD drives, has already been trialled at Palatine Library and proved highly successful, with excellent customer feedback.
