BCH supports new Memory Café A project funded through Blackpool Coastal Housing’s Tenants Project Fund, has opened its doors

he fund, which gives money to local causes which benefit BCH residents, donated £350 to the New Revoe Residents Association in March to set up a facility called The Memory Café. The café, at Ibbison Court Community Centre and Garden off Central Drive in Blackpool, was the brainchild of members of the residents association who put in a bid to the fund after the old café at the community centre shut down. ichael Conlin and Hayley Welch-Conlin were enjoying their dream trip of a life time in Hawaii and loved the island’s sunshine, beautiful greenery and golden sands. And while enjoying island life they also discovered their favourite way to cool down and rehydrate on a warm day was with the local favourite, shaved ice, also known as ‘snow cones’. The sweet treats were so popular that shops were always bustling with queues, and it was those queues that set the couple’s minds racing and wondering if they could bring the tropical treat back to Blackpool. Clean sweep of Seaside Awards for Blackpool All of Blackpool’s prestigious beaches have been granted Seaside Awards

he national awards, announced by ‘Keep Britain Tidy’, have rewarded Blackpool South, Blackpool Central, Blackpool North and Bispham for their high standards of beach management, as well as their nearby facilities. It also commends the Council’s beach patrol work to help beach goers stay safe while also advising them on how to protect the local environment and keep it clean. It is the second successive year that all four beaches have been granted the award, which celebrates some of the best beaches in the country.

Friends group for Marton Mere Residents are being asked to join a brand new group to help Marton Mere Nature Reserve

he reserve is currently undergoing a £368,000 makeover, thanks to Heritage Lottery Fund and The Veolia Environmental Trust, to improve the site with habitat works, updated paths and signage, bird hides and a new visitor centre. The new Friends of Marton Mere group will be supporting these improvement works, promoting the site and fundraising to help make a great nature reserve even better. Everyone is welcome to come along to find out how to get involved and be part of the new Friends Group on Wednesday 20 May at 6pm at the new Visitor Centre located on Marton Mere Holiday Park.

Innovative Rover scoops national award Blackpool Council’s innovative idea to boost recycling has scooped a national award
T
he Rover service, which travels to various locations around the town and takes away their unwanted items, has been hailed as the ‘Best Community Recycling Initiative’ in the LetsRecycle. com Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management. The awards were announced at the end of May in London by TV host Eamonn Holmes. Rover, which launched back in October 2013, has collected almost 200 tonnes of waste from 10,000 local residents that otherwise would have gone to landfill. Around 23,000 households in Blackpool do not own a car which would allow them to drive to the tip on Bristol Avenue, Bispham. Difficulty getting to the tip, Blackpool Council believes, is a big factor in fly-tipping problems which can sometimes infuriate local residents. John Blackledge, Blackpool Council’s Director for Community and Environmental Services, said: ‘Rover is a fantastic example of how the Council is thinking of new, creative ideas to help improve the town. Not only does it make it recycling easier for residents but it also makes it more efficient for us too. Electrical items that were being put in the black bins are now being recycled so they can be used again, while other items that are still in a good condition can be sold on at the Re-use store. The service has proved extremely popular over the last 18 months and we are now travelling to around 70 locations across Blackpool every week. Ever since 21 been improving the service and we day one we’ve will continue to do that to make it even more helpful for local people.’

Items that will be accepted by Rover include: Electrical items (TVs, toasters, hair dryers etc), Cans, Glass, Plastic, Spectacles, Phones, Paper/cardboard, Wood, Scrap metals, Batteries - large and domestic, Clothes and textiles and Paint It is operated by third sector provider, Helping Hand, on behalf of Blackpool Council. The scheme is free and runs alongside Blackpool Council’s existing Bulky Matters waste collection scheme which collects large items direct from people’s homes for a small fee (£6 per item with a minimum of three items). All the materials Rover collects are either recycled or sold via the Re-Use Store at the Bristol Avenue tip – another Blackpool Council innovation.
