Line-up announced for popular fireworks events
P
yrotechnic teams from all over the world will go head-to-head in the annual fireworks championships in Blackpool this autumn.
Fireworks team. Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said: “The championships are a huge family favourite.
Top class teams from Australia, Slovakia and the United States will vie to win the coveted title, with displays taking place over four Friday nights starting on September 9.
“They are massively popular and people come from all over the country to watch some of the world’s best give their all in the competition.
It will mean a brand new winner will be crowned this year, after a team from Canada, Feux D’Artifice, put on an incredible display to scoop the prize last year, seeing off competition from China and France.
“Tens of thousands of people came to watch last year’s displays and we’re expecting this year to be just as popular. “It makes for a perfect start to the weekend for those who go along while still being a hotly contested and coveted competition.
The free annual events are among the most popular features in Blackpool’s exciting calendar, featuring jaw-dropping displays – synched to music – from some of the most talented and technically gifted fireworks engineers in the world and attracting tens of thousands of visitors to the Promenade. This year’s events take place every Friday from 9 September with Skylighter Fireworks from Australia kicking things off before the Slovak Privatex Pyro team take to the stage on 16 September and Rozzi’s Famous Fireworks compete for team USA on September 23. The winner will be announced during the exciting finale event on 30 September which features a showcase exhibition from the UK’s very own Titanium 10
“As well as the fireworks displays, the LightPool projection shows on to the Tower will take place every night, and I’d encourage people to stick around after the shows and watch them from the Comedy Carpet.” The winner of this year’s fireworks competition will be chosen by a panel of local judges. The fireworks will, as in previous years, will be fired from North Pier with build up from 7.30pm and shows starting at 8.30pm. Youngsters get gold
T
en Blackpool youngsters have received a special award after completing a twelve month challenge of their volunteering and physical skills.
Cllr Graham Cain, Cabinet Secretary for Blackpool Council, said: “The Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award is a very tough course to complete and all of these young people deserve a lot of praise for sticking with it and seeing it through to end.
The young people have all completed their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award and were presented with their awards earlier in the month.
“The idea behind the award is all about teamwork, resilience and adapting to new skills and challenges. That makes it the perfect foil to help young people get ready for later in their lives and everything that they’ve learnt over the past year or so will stand them in very good stead as they grow up.
All of them will also be invited to St James’s Palace in London to be officially given their certificate by a member of the Royal Family. Completing the award involves undertaking regular volunteering, plus doing physical activity and mastering a skill. The gold award also includes going on a 5 day residential and a 4 day expedition in the wild country. Around 30 young people complete the award every year in Blackpool on average, with the course shaping the young adults to become well rounded members of the community. As part of the 60th anniversary of the DofE Award, a special plaque has also been presented to Blackpool Council to acknowledge the authority’s continued support to the award. 16
“Not only will it help them personally but having the Gold Award will look great on their CVs and applications as they apply for universities and jobs and go on to achieve their potential in life.” The Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award is delivered by three groups across Blackpool: Blackpool Sixth Form, The Windmill Youth Group and The Open Access Group. The celebration on Friday, September 2 will include a fantastic line-up of music, dance and entertainment with special surprises too! Nickelodeon will incorporate their entertainment brand, supported by Club MTV, the biggest music touring brand in the UK. Details of the special guests who will perform on the night will be revealed in coming weeks, including the identity of the Switch-On celebrity.

lackpool Council paid tribute to its army of volunteers at a celebration event held at Dahlia’s Kitchen
The volunteers, who are made up of Blackpool residents, offer their time to help with a whole range of different services, from supporting adults at home to give carers a much needed break, supporting people to get out and about in the local community, providing meet and greet services, supporting people to travel safely on council transport and various other activity based services in local community centres. The impact that Blackpool Social Care Volunteers contribute to local community resilience is far reaching. It provides breaks for carers, support to people who are experiencing difficult times as well as giving the volunteers occupation, motivation and the opportunity to give something back to the community. Blackpool Council Social Care Volunteers are also celebrating their recent accreditation ‘Investing in Volunteering’ where the service’s governance, process and support arrangements for volunteers were inspected over a 12 week period. All of the volunteers received a special thank you from the town’s first citizen, Mayor of Blackpool Cllr Kath Rowson, as well as receiving special certificates to acknowledge those people with one, three, five and ten years of selfless service. Cllr Kath Rowson, Mayor of Blackpool, said: “It was wonderful to meet all of the volunteers who selflessly offer up their own time to help others. 25 “I know first-hand just what a valuable asset to the community they are and am immensely proud to
be representing the entire town in giving them a big thank you.” The celebration event took place as part of a variety of events for National Volunteer Week, which ran from 1-12 June. A host of Blackpool Council run events to celebrate volunteers have taken place over the course of the fortnight, kicking off with a talk by Gerry Wolstenholme about his days in Whitehall, followed by the celebration event before all volunteers are invited to check they are in top shape by undergoing a body health check. Cllr Maria Kirkland, Cabinet Member for Third Sector Engagement and Development at Blackpool Council, added: “All our volunteers do a tremendous job helping out other members of their local community. “Volunteering is such a rewarding thing to do. Not only does it help people to meet likeminded individuals and make new friends and colleagues but it also makes you feel really good about making a valuable difference to people who need it. “Getting involved with volunteering is easy, and you are able to do as much or as little as you are able to commit to.
