The award winning Band of Brothers willow figures outside Chorley Council offices to commemorate the Chorley Pals who lost their lives in the First World War.

Wildflowers and willow figures Help Chorley bloom

Wildflowers and willow figures again took centre stage to help Chorley bloom this summer following the fantastic feedback from last year.

C

horley Council has added to its ‘family’ of willow features on roundabouts and increased the number of wildflower areas, whilst working with the new community-led Chorley in Bloom group to make the borough look spectacular for residents and visitors alike. Councillor Adrian Lowe, who oversees floral displays at Chorley Council, said: ‘We not only received awards from the prestigious Britain in Bloom and North West in Bloom competitions organised by the Royal Horticultural Society for our willow features and wildflowers, we also received wonderful feedback from residents and visitors to the town. So much so, that we’ve put additional willow features on roundabouts, we’re planting more wildflower areas across the borough and we’re putting additional planters in the town centre. All this, coupled with the work that the new ‘Chorley in Bloom’ group is doing in particular encouraging schools, shops and pubs to get involved, should mean that once again Chorley will look blooming marvellous this summer.’

roundabouts on the town centre bypass have been added to for this year. These include: A willow figure looking through a telescope on the roundabout near B&Q to represent Jeremiah Horrocks who was the first to track the Transit of Venus (which is depicted on the neighbouring roundabout at Harpers Lane), Willow butterflies added to the Lyons Lane roundabout which depicts Chorley’s links with the sugar magnate Sir Henry Tate Also, a willow family having a picnic is set to be installed in Astley Park, and to reflect the history of Buckshaw Village, which is built on the site of the former Royal Ordnance Factory, there’s a willow figure of a girl pushing a trolley loaded with munitions been installed on the roundabout near the War Horse pub. Wildflower planting has also been extended to roundabouts in Buckshaw Village and the Gillibrand link road, and extra wildflower areas have been created in Astley Village, Blackburn Road, Whittle-le-Woods, Chorley Cemetery and Carr Brook, Whittle-le-Woods.

The lasting legacy of the wildflowers and willow features which reflect the town’s proud history on the 8

Money Matters

How to haggle for the best deals By Martin Lewis Haggling isn’t just a skill for market stalls, these days where it really pays is at call centres. And if you’re a Sky customer there’s no better time to put your haggling skills to the test, as some Sky TV customers are facing hikes of over £50 a year. Yet this isn’t just for Sky. It works for other TV firms, mobile, TV, broadband, breakdown and more. Last year on my site, I polled over 7,000 people who tried to call-centre haggle, to see how successful they were company by company. The results are staggering, at Sky 86% succeeded in some form of discount, the AA 84%, TalkTalk 83%, Plusnet 82%, Virgin media 80% and RAC 78%. In other words, for every five people who tried, four got a deal. And don’t think the amounts are trivial either, here’s just some of the successes people have tweeted me in Sky’s current round of price hikes… “Just saved £315 a year with a good old haggle with Sky, cheers Martin.” “Phoned up and in 10 mins it’d knocked £134 off my bill. No change to services or terms. Thank you!” “Managed to save almost 50% by calling. Firm but polite with a clear message throughout my call.” 10

So don’t be shy, it’s time to tool up and get a haggle on. Here are my top ten tips (but for you, I’ll do it in 9)...

1. Benchmark the best deal.

It’s important to have the factual arsenal. Research the deals, discounts and codes that are available for new customers, as a basis for negotiation. Here’s a quick rundown for each of the main haggle areas. Digital TV: For example, you can currently get 25% off all Sky TV bundles and £75 bill credit, compare this with what you will be paying. You can use this figure to haggle with Sky or Virgin. See www.mse.me/digitalTV for all the deals. And of course the cheapest digital TV option is Freeview. It’s a one-off cost of around £20 for a box and there’s no monthly subscription. Breakdown cover: If you go via a cashback site, you can effectively sign up for basic AA or RAC cover for under £20. See www.mse.me/ breakdown for full best-buys. Broadband: Here the best deals are all promo offers. A common level is line rent and broadband for £16 a month, plus a £100 high street voucher. Full best-buys in www.mse.me/broadband.

2. Timing is crucial.

Haggling works best when you’re near or beyond the end of your contract as then they have a real risk you’ll leave. There’s no harm in giving it a try when you’re not, if you struggle then diarise when you’re nearing the end (you can give Sky notice of leaving 31 days before the end of your contract) and call back then.

Advertise your business call 0800 970 7687 or email info@link-mag.co.uk

Business & Finance 3. The haggling Holy Grail is the customer retention department.

If you’re coming to the end of your contract, or are out of it, then you’re wielding a powerhouse weapon: customer loyalty. If they don’t offer the deal you want, tell them you’re going to leave. This means you get put through to what they externally call “disconnections”, but internally is called “customer retentions”. There the staff ’s job is to keep you, and they have massively more discretion to offer you deals to do so.

4. Use charm, chutzpah, cheek and a smile.

Aggression or anger will just put their back up. You’re asking for a discount, and they’re just as much within their right not to give it as you are to leave.

Aim for polite, firm and non-combative.

5. Use the phrases that pay. You may find that the customer service rep will only offer a small discount at first, but if you don’t agree with the price use phrases like:

n I’ve worked out my monthly budget, and my absolute max is £[insert price here]/month n [TalkTalk/Virgin/BT] can do it for less... n I need to think about it... n I think my husband / wife will go bonkers if I pay that... n It’s still a lot of money... n What’s the very best you can do?

6. Don’t panic if it calls your bluff and says it’ll disconnect you.

Some people worry and get nervous to try this in case they’re disconnected. My easy ‘get out of jail free’ card on this is the phrase: “Hold on, I’ll call you back on that. I’d like to check with my wife/ husband/dog/Aunt Fanny first.”

7. Ask if it can throw in extras.

If it won’t slash the price, see if it can include any extras, like free calls or extra channels, bigger download limits, or one level higher breakdown cover

If they don’t offer the deal you want, tell them you’re going to leave. This means you get put through to what they externally call “disconnections”, but internally is called “customer retentions”

8. If you fail? Try, try and try again.

I’ve heard rumours that different staff members have quotas of how many deals they can do. Even if not true, it feels like that to many. You may have called the wrong person at the wrong time. So call back a few days later and speak to someone else. This works for many people.

9. Vote with your feet.

If you don’t get what you want and other firms offer the same for less, then you should seriously consider leaving and go grab one of those deals.

Parklife

Thousands enjoy Astley Hall’s ‘Picnic in the Park’

T

housands of people from across Chorley and beyond had a fun-filled afternoon in Astley Park on Sunday (5 July) as Chorley Council hosted its annual picnic in the park. From lunch time Astley Park was full of laughter, singing and dancing as families enjoyed bands, singers and special appearances from the cast of CBeebies favourite The Rhyme Rocket and the Snow Sisters and Olaf. Despite the rain arriving at around 2.45pm, families braved the downpour to see one of this year’s Britain’s Got Talent stars, Henry Gallagher, who wowed the remaining crowd with his energetic performance. Over 8000 people turned out for the annual event with every act on the Rock FM stage delighting the crowd. There was also face painters, balloon modellers, arts and crafts and children and their families had a go at every activity that was on offer in the sports and soft play area down towards the bowling and putting greens. Additionally, thousands of people took on the Explorer orienteering challenge and the Sky Ride Local navigated through the crowds to enjoy their bike ride. Councillor Alistair Bradley, Leader of Chorley Council, said: ‘Picnic in the park gets bigger and better every year and it was fantastic to see so many people enjoying the entertainment and delights of Astley Park with their family and friends. Everywhere you looked, people were enjoying picnics and it was good to hear that a lot of people had travelled to the event from surrounding towns like Wigan, Bolton and Preston. 14

TOP: The cast of the Rhyme Rocket wow the crowds at Chorley Council’s picnic in the park ABOVE: Families take over the lawns in Astley Park to enjoy a picnic and the entertainment The acts and atmosphere were brilliant with everyone clapping and singing along and it was great to see families having fun and trying every activity that was on offer. It was a shame the rain arrived later in the afternoon but we got through most of the schedule and most people continued to enjoy the entertainment.’ There are lots of events to come this summer including the first ever Chorley Flower Show on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 August, playday on Wednesday 5 August, two more theatre in the park events on Sunday 16 August and Saturday 29 August and much more. Pictures worth a thousand words Visitors to the new Chorley Flower Show will get a unique opportunity to see paintings in the historic Astley Hall like they have never seen them before in a specially commissioned exhibition on 1 and 2 August.

T

he ‘Up close and personal: portraits from the Great Hall at eye level’ exhibition will be a ‘oncein-a-lifetime’ opportunity to view the paintings from a different angle before they return to their usual elevation after the conservation work at the Hall has been completed. The pieces are major oil paintings showing historical figures with connections to Astley Hall, including the Charnock, Brooke and Townley-Parker families. The exhibition also includes portraits of King Charles I and Oliver Cromwell who have also had an influence on the Hall’s history. Councillor Alistair Bradley, Leader of Chorley Council, said: ‘We’re starting to see a lot of interest in the flower show and one thing we’re keen to do is make the most of what we’ve got in the park to make it different to the other shows. We’ve got the fantastic grounds of the park, including the Walled Garden, and Astley Hall is one of the most well-known landmarks in the region. As you know it has been closed for conservation work this year but will re-open specially for the show and it will look amazing decked out in floral displays, and there will be a unique opportunity to see paintings that are usually elevated high in the rooms.’ Thousands of people are expected to flock to the inaugural Chorley Flower Show, organised by Chorley Council and sponsored by Botany Bay, which will feature a top line up of gardening and horticultural entertainment. The two-day event, held on 1 and 2 August in Astley Park, will include: The Grand Marquee featuring goldmedal winning entrants from some of the country’s biggest shows, A chance to see Chorley’s awardwinning RHS Chelsea Flower Show exhibit ‘The Evaders’ Garden’, which will be unveiled to the public at the show, Meet celebrity gardeners David Domoney and Bob Flowerdew who will be answering your questions in the gardening theatre, Horticultural trade stands offering the best quality in garden products, An

amateur marquee incorporating flower and pot plant classes and floral art and The chance to enjoy a picnic on the beautiful lawns with plenty of entertainment throughout the day including a Victorian fairground and children’s entertainment stage ‘When we held the Astley Illuminated event last year we attracted over 4,000 visitors because it was an opportunity to see the Hall in a different light,’ said Councillor Bradley. ‘The fact that we’ve got this one-off exhibition and the opportunity to see the Hall decorated in floral displays is a great addition to the show and will be something that you can’t see anywhere else. For those interested in the arts and culture we will also have a special ‘blooming’ display in the Astley Farmhouse gallery. Tickets are now starting to sell so I’d urge people to get theirs in advance so they don’t miss out – as it’s our first show we are keeping the admission fees lower than other shows making it a great opportunity for people in the region to see some of the best exhibitors in the country and the unveiling of our award-winning RHS Chelsea Flower Show garden.’ Tickets are now on sale priced £4 adults, £2 children and £10 for a family ticket – you can buy them online now at chorley.gov.uk and wristbands are available in Chorley Council’s Union Street offices, Malcolm’s Musicland, on Chapel Street, Café Ambio, in Asltey Park, and Botany Bay.

Summer Cooking

Beautiful Berries This wonderfully substantial warm salad has a sweet and sharp BerryJewel raspberry dressing that brings it to life. Although it takes a long time to get the lamb meltingly tender it is almost entirely hands off - a great dish to get started in the oven before you go for a weekend walk. Serves 6-8 What you will need For the lamb 1 tbsp olive oil 4 large cloves garlic, crushed 1 tbsp cumin seeds, roughly ground tsp dried thyme 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp smoked paprika salt & freshly ground black pepper 2kg bone-in lamb shoulder 2 x 400g tins chickpeas, drained & rinsed to serve 235g salad spinach, washed & well drained 225g punnet BerryJewel raspberries 150g pecans For the dressing 225g punnet BerryJewel raspberries 100ml water 3 tbsp balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp runny honey Salt & freshly ground black pepper, to taste Method In a small bowl, mix together the olive oil with the garlic, cumin, thyme, cinnamon and smoked paprika and season generously with salt and freshly 16

ground black pepper. Using a sharp knife, pierce 1 centimeter deep holes all over the lamb - this will help the spice flavour to get deep inside the meat. Rub the marinade all over the lamb, pushing inside the holes you have made. Place the lamb in a large baking tray, cover with cling film and set aside to marinate at room temperature for 2 hours, or overnight in the fridge. Preheat the oven to 150ºC/130ºC fan/gas 2. Remove and discard the cling film and pour 200ml cold water into the roasting tin. Cover tightly with foil and cook in the oven for 5 hours it won’t need checking or turning so it’s fine to leave it undisturbed. After the lamb has had its 5 hours

cooking, remove from the oven and discard the foil. Increase the oven temperature to 180ºC/160ºC fan/gas 4. Using a large metal spoon, spoon off and discard as much fat as possible providing you don’t stir the sauce it will be floating on top. Stir the chickpeas through the remaining juices, and return to the oven, uncovered, for a further hour. Whilst the lamb is in the oven for the final hour, make the dressing by placing all the ingredients into a small saucepan. Set over a medium high heat and bring up to the boil. Boil steadily for about 5 minutes until the BerryJewel raspberries have broken right down and you are left with a shiny, deep coloured sauce. Taste to check the seasoning, adding salt and pepper as desired and a little more honey if it is too sharp. Strain through a sieve to remove the pips and set aside to cool. Toast the pecans in a dry frying pan until they are deep golden brown and smell lovely and nutty. Tip onto a board and roughly chop. Set aside. After the final hour in the oven, take the lamb out and transfer to a large plate or board. Using 2 forks, flake the meat into bite sized pieces. To serve, divide the spinach leaves between individual plates and scatter over the BerryJewel raspberries and pecans. Spoon the shredded lamb and some chickpeas over the top and drizzle on a little dressing. Serve the rest of the dressing alongside in a small jug.

Warm salad of Middle Eastern pulled lamb and chickpeas with BerryJewel Raspberries

Persian Jeweled Rice with BerryJewel Raspberries, Walnuts and Parsley Serves 6 as a side dish Based on the classic Persian dish, Javaher Polow, this fruity rice is truly fit for a king. It makes a great side dish for a spicy stew or a succulent roast chicken. The buttery golden crust that develops on the bottom of the pan is absolutely delicious. For the rice 300g basmati rice A generous pinch saffron threads 150g dried cranberries 2 tbsp olive oil 60g unsalted butter 1 large onion, finely chopped 1 cinnamon stick 1 tsp cardamon pods, bruised with the flat of a knife 1 tsp cumin seeds Salt & freshly ground black pepper To serve 100g walnuts, roughly chopped 225g punnet BerryJewel raspberries A generous bunch of parsley, chopped Finely grated zest from 1 orange 1 garlic clove, very finely chopped Method Put the rice in a sieve and rinse under cold running water. Tip into a bowl and cover well with cold water. Set aside to soak for 1 hour. Add the saffron to a small heatproof glass and cover with 2 tablespoons of boiling water, then set aside to soak. Add the cranberries to a small heatproof bowl and cover in boiling water, set aside to soak. Once the rice, saffron and cranberries are halfway through their soaking time, add the oil and half the butter to a deep, preferably nonstick, frying pan and set over a low heat. When the butter has melted, add the onion, cinnamon, cardamon and cumin and fry gently for 30 minutes until the onion is soft and lightly caramelised, then turn off the heat. Drain the rice

and put it in a large saucepan. Pour over boiling water so it comes a generous 3 centimeters above the rice and set over a medium high heat. Boil for 3 minutes, then drain and rinse under cold running water to cool and drain well. The rice will have started to cook but will still have plenty of bite and the grains will not be fluffy. Stir the cooled rice through the onions in the frying pan, along with the saffron and soaking water, and the cranberries and their soaking water. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper, stirring well, then dot the surface of the rice with the remaining butter. Using the handle of a wooden spoon, make 5-6 holes through the rice all the way to the bottom of the pan - this helps it to steam evenly. Tear off a sheet of baking paper, scrunch it up under running water, shaking off the excess, then lay snugly over the surface of the rice. Cover tightly with a layer of foil and set over a very low heat. Cook, undisturbed, for 40 minutes, after which time the rice will be cooked and fluffy and a delicious buttery crust will have developed on the bottom. Whilst the rice is cooking, toast the walnuts in a dry frying pan until golden and smelling nutty. Tip into a bowl and stir through the BerryJewel raspberries, parsley, orange zest and garlic. Set aside. Once the rice is ready, remove and discard the paper. Lightly fork through the walnut, BerryJewel raspberry and parsley mixture and pile the rice onto a warmed serving dish. Scrape the lovely crunchy caramelised rice bits from the base of the pan and sprinkle over the top. Serve immediately.

BerryJewel Raspberry Fool with Almond Toffee Shards and Whole Raspberries Serves 6 This is a classic raspberry fool with a bit of a twist. Shards of crisp almond toffee are a great crunchy contrast to the soft creaminess of fool.

For the almond toffee 375g caster sugar 75g golden syrup 35g butter 50ml cold water 75g blanched whole almonds, roughly chopped ½ tsp vanilla extract ½ tsp fine salt For the fool 2 x 225g punnets BerryJewel raspberries 300ml double cream 300g Greek yoghurt Method Start by making the toffee. Line a baking sheet with a non-stick silicone mat or piece of non-stick baking parchment. Set aside. Add the sugar, syrup, butter and water to a large saucepan (the toffee will bubble up and at least double in volume whilst cooking). Set over a low heat and stir constantly until the sugar has dissolved and the butter has melted. Turn the heat up to medium and bring up to the boil. Boil, uncovered, for 7-10 minutes until a little teaspoon of the mixture turns into a hard ball when dropped in a glass of cold water. Start testing after 7 minutes, and keep on boiling until it is ready - it may take a little less or longer, depending on the depth and width of the pan you choose. If you are using a sugar thermometer it will read 138ºC. Turn off the heat and quickly stir through the almonds, vanilla and salt then pour onto the prepared baking sheet. Set aside to go cold - about 30 minutes. Once hard, break into thin shards using a strong sharp knife. This makes about double what you need for this recipe, but it stores well in an airtight tin for at least a week. To make the fool, add one punnet of BerryJewel raspberries to a bowl and mash up with a fork. Pour the cream into a large mixing bowl and whisk, either by hand or with an electric whisk, until it forms soft billowy peaks. Gently fold the Greek yogurt through using a large metal spoon until well combined. Then pour in the mashed raspberries and lightly fold. Finally fold through half the punnet of whole BerryJewel raspberries and the toffee shards and pour into a serving dish. Decorate the top with the remaining whole raspberries and toffee shards. Serve immediately.

Caring for your pet

Holiday Havens Plan ahead for stress-free pets while you’re on holiday For those lucky enough to be packing up and travelling to UK beauty spots on holiday this summer, the obligatory packing check list of sun cream and swim wear is a familiar one. But for pet owners, the top priority once they have booked time off work and hotels, is what to do with their four-legged friends while they are away if their pets can’t travel with them. “Rule number one is to plan ahead”, says PDSA Vet Vicki Larkham-Jones: “It can be a very stressful time for pets when their owners go on holiday. Kennels and catteries are unfamiliar places and mean a break in their usual routine, so it’s always good to consider options carefully before choosing by going to visit the kennel owners and discussing how they operate and what they need from you. “For some pets, such as rescue animals or those who have never been in a kennel environment, it might be better to consider the alternative options available. There is a wealth of reputable

18

pet sitters who will either come and stay in the owner’s home, or have the pet live with them. Again, it’s important to visit or meet the sitter first and introduce them to your pets. This way, owners can get a feel for whether the arrangement suits everyone including their pet. Popular pet sitters, kennels and catteries are often booked up months in advance, so making plans and checking dates well before holidays are booked is always a sensible precaution. “Finally, make sure that pets are fully up-todate with their vaccinations, flea and worming treatments, to help ensure they don’t pick up any nasty parasites or illnesses whilst in their temporary accommodation – a reputable kennel or cattery will request this anyway” continues Vicki. “Following these simple measures leaves owners free to enjoy a stressfree holiday without worrying about their precious pets.”

Pet Care Q&A

Your questions answered with PDSA Vet Vicki Larkham-Jones Last month I was walking my Yorkie, Maggie, and a Staffie ran up to us. It was friendly at first, but then it grabbed Maggie round the throat and ran off. We caught up and I rushed her to the vet. Luckily she wasn’t hurt, but now she hates going out of the house and gets very anxious. How can I help her regain her confidence? Amy It will take time and patience for your dog to regain her confidence – don’t rush or force her to go anywhere that she doesn’t want to as this will make her anxiety worse. A useful technique is called ’desensitisation and counterconditioning’. This involves asking someone to walk their friendly dog at the same time as you but at a distance (e.g. on the other side of a field). Gradually walk Maggie a little closer towards your friend’s dog, praising her when she is calm and relaxed, but if she shows signs of anxiety calmly stop, turn around and walk in the opposite direction. Don’t reassure her if she becomes nervous, as this will reinforce her fear. Over a few weeks you should be able to get closer to the other dog until, eventually, Maggie is happy to meet the dog. Your best chance of success is to get expert help with this, so ask your vet for advice or visit the website of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors (www. apbc.org.uk). Our house was recently broken into and our cat, Zebedee, was there at the time. Since then he has gone off his food and won’t sleep in his usual bed, plus he’s had a couple of accidents in the house. What should we do? Craig A break-in can be quite an unsettling experience for a cat as it can make them feel that the home

is no longer their own. Firstly you should take him to your vet for a check up. If there are no underlying medical reasons for this change in his behaviour, then it could well be a result of anxiety. Toileting inappropriately in the house is a sign of stress in cats and you should try to keep your routine as normal as possible. Make sure he has a safe area to rest in and familiar toys, bowls, beds and bedding to ensure that Zebedee realises that this home is still his own. Give Zebedee plenty of loving attention too. Pheromones can also help – these are scents that are reassuring to animals but undetectable to humans. They are available as plug-in diffusers, and should help to reduce his stress and anxiety. Finally, never punish Zebedee for any of his accidents, as this will stress him further and make the problem worse. My fish Boo has been swimming round in circles and is losing scales off the top part of her back. She is not eating as much as before. What should I do? Sammy There are different things that could be causing your fish’s condition. Possible causes of a change in a fish’s swimming behaviour can include bacterial infections, problems affecting the swim bladder (an organ that allows fish to control their position in the water) or the fish’s environment being unsuitable. A fish’s scales should be smooth, lie flat against the body and be unbroken. Scale loss can be the result of physical injury, when a fish bumps into something or rough handling, parasites, a water quality problem or skin infections. If there is an infection there will be additional signs, such as a reddened area. All of these can be linked to the fish’s immune status which in turn can cause swimming changes. I’d recommend that you get Boo checked out by your vet as soon as possible to try and find out what is causing these changes.

We meet every Thursday, from 7:00pm until 11:00pm in the upstairs youth room of St Mary’s Parish Centre. The aims of our club are simple: to play tabletop wargames, of any type, and to give our members somewhere spacious and friendly in which they can do just that, and to promote our hobby in a positive way within the local community. Also, through the forums on our site and through the club itself, to encourage our members to try different game systems and help them with the collecting and painting of miniature armies. We play, most frequently, Warhammer 40k, SAGA, and HORDES/WARMACHINE, but we are by no means limited to just these, there is interest enough within the club for games of any type, from any producer, such as Blitzkrieg Commander, Mordheim, Necromunda, Epic, Warmaster, Hail Ceasar, Pike & Shotte, to name but a few and would welcome the opportunity to play such games with new members. With this in mind, we welcome any and all who may want to come along and meet us at the club, or to contact us for more information. www.cack-wargamesclub.net

We are a group of local folk musicians who are keen to help up and coming local musicians get some experience of playing their instruments in a (semi) public environment. We do this by running a monthly ‘Slow and Steady’ session in a local community hall on a Saturday afternoon. The session is run by an experienced musician who understands the problems and needs of budding players, and makes sure that the music played is suitable for those who are learning. This is held at Eaves Green Community Centre on the first Saturday of every month. The session costs £2 which includes a set of music (if required) and tea and biscuits. We do not charge for your first visit. The main cost is the hire of the hall. The session runs from 2:00 until 5:00. We cater for most of the common folk instruments and specifically have experienced players for Whistle, Fiddle, Melodeon (G/D), Concertina (English and Anglo), Guitar, Banjo and Mandolin. Other instruments can be accommodated as long as they play in the common folk keys (primarily G and D, perhaps A). We have contacts all over the North West, and could certainly find friendly help for most other instruments.

You can grow your own way Lancashire Grown exhibition showcases Lancashire’s agricultural history

A

new exhibition showcasing Lancashire’s agricultural history is on display at Lancaster City Museum. The ‘Lancashire Grown’ exhibition runs until Sunday 4 October. Heather Dowler, Lancashire County Council’s manager at Lancaster City Museum, said: ‘Lancashire has a strong agricultural history. There are a variety of items on display to reflect this, including objects, artwork, photographs and a knitted ‘allotment’ that will grow. They’ve been put together to profile the diversity of crops grown on our fertile land and the tools used to grow them. The important story of the typical life of an agricultural worker will also be featured as well as those people who work the land and grow their own food, usually on an allotment. Hopefully the exhibition will inspire visitors to grow their own at home as well. The exhibition also includes artwork and objects showcasing the Helmshore Great House Experimental Farm Project, when new and different 30

farming techniques were used for the first time as a model for the future.’ The exhibition is supported by a varied events programme including craft activities for the family, an art workshop for adults and a demonstration of a new rural archiving project. It is suitable for everyone and entry to the Lancaster City Museum is free. For more information about the exhibition and the events programme, telephone 01524 64637 or email lancastercitymuseum@lancashire.gov. uk. Alternatively, visit www.lancashire.gov.uk/ museums.
