Chorley wins medal at Chelsea An amazing story of selfless bravery that began in 1943 involving an injured RAF navigator and a courageous group of French people has captured the nation’s attention with Chorley Council winning a silver gilt with its first ever exhibit at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

V

isitors to the world’s most prestigious horticultural show were amazed by the story behind the garden saying, ‘It’s the best thing I’ve seen at Chelsea’, ‘Of all the they exhibits this is the only one that makes you emotional’ and ‘I’ve never seen anything like it’. The garden is putting Chorley on the map with people and media from all over the globe taking interest in the borough’s ambitious plans. Councillor Alistair Bradley, Leader of Chorley Council, said: ‘We’ve been blown away by the reaction to our garden and it is not only a fantastic design but there’s a real tale of sacrifice and bravery behind it. The show is a great opportunity to put Chorley on the map and to have so many people interested in what we’re doing and our plans for the future is great for the borough. After Chelsea we will be bringing the garden back to Chorley and I’m sure it will be something everyone can be proud of and be another attraction for visitors to the borough.’ The authority commissioned awardwinning Chorley designer John Everiss to tell the tale of his father’s amazing story when he beat the odds after being shot down over enemy lines during the Second World War. John’s design, ‘The Evaders Garden’, is formed to illustrate the bond between helper and evader in worn-torn France. His landscape features a unique sculpture of a young flyer, hiding up against the wall of a war-ravaged church. 4

He returned after the war to find it and this is the photo that was developed. The pilot landed the plane between two trees to knock off the fuel tanks so it didn’t explode on landing RIGHT: Stan Everiss

A specially commissioned stained-glass window features two young French people, hands out-stretched to help, and steps leading out from the church suggesting the airman’s eventual escape route. ‘It’s fantastic to have people talking about Chorley and we’ve been speaking to hundreds of people telling them where we are and what we have to offer,’ said Councillor Bradley. ‘We are using the show to meet with business people who we hope will want to come and invest in Chorley and by raising the profile of the borough it will help us to benefit the local economy too. The garden will be unveiled in Astley Park in time for the new Chorley Flower Show on 1 and 2 August and will also be a permanent feature attracting visitors to the town. It is also a poignant reminder of the sacrifices people made during the Second World War and will be a fitting tribute during the 70th anniversary year.’ The garden featured in the Artisan section and is also up for the People’s Choice award at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and anyone wishing to vote for The Evaders Garden by Chorley Council can do so at www.rhs.org.uk/shows-events/rhs-chelsea-flowershow/gardens/Peoples-Choice.

One of many families enjoying a previous Picnic in the Park

Picnic in the Park rockets into Chorley Families are invited to a day of free fun organised by Chorley Council in Astley Park on Sunday 5th July

P

icnic in the Park is back for the seventh year running with lots of free family entertainment including a special appearance by the CBeebies favourite, the Rhyme Rocket. Chorley Council has teamed up with Rock FM to bring a fantastic family stage show to this year’s Picnic in the Park with performances from the cast of the Rhyme Rocket, children’s entertainers, top local bands and singers as well as dance acts, face painters, balloon modellers and more. There will also be opportunities to meet and have your picture taken with the cast of the Rhyme Rocket. The fun starts at 12 noon and will also feature interactive activities for children including sports, games, orienteering challenges, arts and crafts, dressup, meet the animals of Pets Corner and not forgetting the opportunity to explore the new destination play area. Plus, if you and your family like cycling, you can also take part in a seven mile Skyride, which departs from Astley Park at 2pm. Just bring along your bicycle and a helmet, then come back to the park after the ride and enjoy the rest of the festivities. For more details and to book on the Skyride visit goskyride.com/chorley Councillor Peter Wilson, who is responsible for events at Chorley Council, said: ‘Picnic in the Park is always a fantastic event where people can come along with their family and friends to enjoy some brilliant entertainment in the beautiful surroundings of Astley Park. Come rain or shine, there will be lots going on between 12 noon and 5pm to keep the little ones entertained, so pack up your picnic goodies and sing and dance along to Rock FM’s family stage show. We’re excited that another CBeebies favourite will be coming to Chorley

Artist’s impression of how the scheme could look from the Fleet Street frontage.

Plans revealed for Fleet Street development Fleet Street long-stay car park could be transformed into a 65 flat extra care scheme as part of plans to develop that part of town.

S

ince last summer Chorley Council has been pulling together options for the site after the opportunity was highlighted in the town centre masterplan. The flagship £9 million scheme would provide much needed accommodation to allow elderly people to maintain their independence. Councillor Alistair Bradley, Chorley Council leader, said: ‘I’m really pleased with the progress and this development would provide purpose-built accommodation to look after our elderly population to ensure they can maintain their independence and dignity. It would also provide a community hub close to the town centre, supporting the people of Chorley when they need it the most, and providing an income to the council in the future. We’ve bid for funding from the government and I hope it gets the support it deserves, however I am disappointed that Lancashire County Council wasn’t able to support us with a capital contribution as they had promised, and I hope they can re-consider their position particularly as they will be a primary beneficiary of the scheme.’ The scheme would take up the Fleet Street long stay car park and create 47 one-bedroom and 18 twobed apartments with a mixed use of rent and partownership suitable for people who have extra care 14

needs, learning or physical disabilities or dementia. It would also include a multi-purpose community space incorporating a sprung dance floor that could accommodate dance classes. The development would also be available to hire for local community groups with a café bistro that would be open for the general public to use. Councillor Bradley added: ‘It’s a really exciting proposal and fits in line with our strategy of developing the town centre and would generate income that can be spent on providing other services to residents. It would also bring a new community of people together close to the main shopping areas providing a boost to those businesses. We are aware that we will be losing car parking spaces if this does go ahead but this is a relatively under-used car park and we will be providing additional spaces elsewhere as part of other developments in the town centre.’ The scheme is dependent on funding being secured from the Government, with Chorley Council putting forward over £6 million towards the project. If funding is secured in the next few months a report will be brought back to the council for approval with a planning application likely to be submitted in early 2016.

Let the Astley adventures begin Children visiting Chorley’s Astley Park can now create their own outdoor adventure after the area’s first themed destination play area was officially opened.

C

horley Council opened the much-anticipated play area on Friday 29 May after months of work to improve the play facilities in Astley Park.

The destination play area has been built at the side of the Pavilion and the current smaller play area. It has a theme of Royalists and Roundheads, with links to Astley Hall, where it is believed Oliver Cromwell once stayed and has sections for younger and older children. The concept is based on a castle ruin with natural stone to form ‘rooms’, which are linked with footpaths. The play equipment is spaced throughout and includes slides, climbing stacks, zip wires, swings, a hip-hop see-saw, balance trails, a wall tower and much more. Councillor Bev Murray, who has responsibility for the Astley complex at Chorley Council, officially opened the play area with Chorley MP Lindsay Hoyle. Councillor Murray said: ‘The destination play area is absolutely amazing. Everyone was excited to see it finished but it looks better than we could have ever imagined and we hope everyone will enjoy creating their own adventures on it. As soon as you see the destination play area, you will see that it provides a much wider range of play activities and equipment than regular play areas plus the theme has been wonderfully incorporated into all aspects of the site. We hope it will attract lots of local families as well as more users from outside the area. Astley Park is important to the people of Chorley and the council is committed to maintaining

and improving the facilities across the complex.’ Mr Hoyle said: ‘This play area is a very welcome addition to the fabulous facilities that Chorley Council has provided at Astley. There has been a lot of work and investment in the park, the Hall, the Coach House and Farm House to provide a place for families to come along and enjoy and I hope people will make the most of it and have lots of fun here.’ The destination play area will be open all year-round and will be an added attraction at the many events that are planned in Astley Park this summer including: • Picnic in the Park on Sunday 5 July • Animals in the Park on Saturday 18 July • The Chorley Flower Show on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 August • Theatre in the Park presents Robin Hood the musical on Sunday 16 August • Playtime in the Park on Wednesday 27 August • Theatre in the Park presents Mr Stink on Saturday 29 August • The Axel Scheffler exhibition at Astley Hall and a special Gruffalo event from Saturday 19 September For more information on Astley Hall, Coach House and Park, like the Facebook page or visit chorley. gov.uk PHOTO: Councillor Bev Murray and Chorley MP Lindsay Hoyle officially open Astley Park’s Destination Play Area on Friday 29th May 2015

Some 75 people attended the event, at Chorley Town Hall, where there were presentations about the company, information from various managers about the company and their own roles.

increase as we work through the applications. We’d like to thank Chorley Council for its support in arranging and delivering this event, we were extremely happy with the calibre of applicants the event attracted and their varied skill sets and careers levels.’

Fairpoint recruitment advisor, Jo Williams, said: ‘From the event we received 56 expressions of interest and applications and we’ve already arranged 15 interviews, are considering two for an apprenticeship and have made one offer of a temporary assignment and one offer of a permanent role. These numbers will to continue to

Councillor Alistair Bradley, Chorley Council leader, said: ‘We were delighted to work with Fairpoint to organise this event and we’re pleased that so many people were interested in the job opportunities available. Bring HS2 into Preston The chief executive of North and Western Lancashire Chamber of Commerce (NWLCC) has called on the Government to reconsider bringing the planned High Speed Two rail link into Lancashire

T

ransport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin has promised that HS2 will go ahead as planned following the Conservative’s victory in the General Election. In a keynote speech in Leeds, Mr McLoughlin said work on the connection between Birmingham and London would commence in 2017, with the ‘Y network’ – the lines to Leeds and Manchester – following soon after. While welcoming Mr McLoughlin’s comments, NWLCC chief executive Babs Murphy said: ‘I would ask the Government to reconsider its decision to end the line at Manchester and bring it into Lancashire. We have waited a long time for developments on HS2 and while it is good news the Government plans to finally get going on it, it would be even better for Lancashire if the county was to benefit more directly. The North West of England however does not stop at Manchester. Extending the line to Preston would provide a greater connectivity not just to Lancashire but to Cumbria, Scotland and the whole of the North West.’ Mr McLoughlin said: ‘The General Election result was a massive vote of confidence in favour of HS2. So the argument has been won. HS2 will be built, the full “Y” network, from London to Birmingham and Birmingham 20

to Manchester and Leeds, with construction starting in just two years. This is the best opportunity in well over a century to level the playing field between north and south. Not by dragging London down, but by firing up the rest of the country - the East and West Midlands and the new Northern Powerhouse - with transport connections that match the very best in Europe.’ North and Western Lancashire Chamber of Commerce, Tel: 01772 653000, Fax: 01772 655544. www.lancschamber.co.uk North and Western Lancashire Chamber of Commerce is the largest financially and politically independent business support organisation in Lancashire. She said: ‘It is such an honour to be chosen as Chorley’s First Citizen. We do know what the role entails because I was Mayoress when Adrian was Mayor and I’m so looking forward to it. I just want to meet as many people as possible from the various community groups and organisations in the borough.’ Marion was born in Coppull, attended Coppull Primary School and Southlands High School and works for Bailcast in Chorley. CHORLEY TRADITIONAL MUSIC SESSIONS

CHARNOCK RICHARD RAMBLING CLUB

We are a group of local folk musicians who are keen to help up and coming local musicians get some experience of playing their instruments in a (semi) public environment. We do this by running a monthly ‘Slow and Steady’ session in a local community hall on a Saturday afternoon. The session is run by an experienced musician who understands the problems and needs of budding players, and makes sure that the music played is suitable for those who are learning. This is held at Eaves Green Community Centre on the first Saturday of every month. The session costs £2 which includes a set of music (if required) and tea and biscuits. We do not charge for your first visit. The main cost is the hire of the hall. The session runs from 2:00 until 5:00. We cater for most of the common folk instruments and specifically have experienced players for Whistle, Fiddle, Melodeon (G/D), Concertina (English and Anglo), Guitar, Banjo and Mandolin. Other instruments can be accommodated as long as they play in the common folk keys (primarily G and D, perhaps A). We have contacts all over the North West, and could certainly find friendly help for most other instruments.

We encourage those interested to attend our group meetings and events which are a welcoming and social environment for children and their families to discuss diabetes and its effects. Support and companionship are some of the simplest yet most important aspects of living with diabetes - this is why our group exists and we want to help in any way that we can.

The club was formed in Charnock Richard 35 years ago and is still thriving. We have a varied walking programme with venues in Lancashire, the Yorkshire Dales,Wales, Derbyshire and [of course] the Lake District. Travel, on alternate Sundays, is by coach with pick ups between Charnock Richard, Chorley and Bamber Bridge. Fantastic value at £10 per trip ! There are 3/4 walks, led by experienced leaders, on every trip. These range from leisurely to fairly strenuous. During Spring/Summer we offer fortnightly Wednesday evening social walks culminating at a pub. Our footpath secretary ensures that local footpaths are kept open for the public to enjoy. New members are very welcome why not come for a trial walk [or 2] before joining?
