LEFT: The exterior of Astley Hall lit up during Astley Illuminated BELOW: Thousands of happy families enjoy the Picnic in the Park in July 2014
Visitors to Astley Hall soar in 2014 FIGURES revealed recently show that the number of visitors to Chorley’s Astley Hall and Coach House has soared in the past year. Nearly 50,000 people visited Astley Hall and the Coach House between April and December 2014, which is over 6,000 more than the previous year and the most the Chorley Council-owned attraction has ever seen. More activities and events all year round like Picnic in the Park, Astley Illuminated and the opportunity to meet Father Christmas as well as exhibitions including Brainstorm: The Art of Bryan Talbot and Astley Then and Now, have helped to pull in the crowds.
She continued: ‘Over the past year, we have also been building up the Astley complex’s online presence and this is certainly paying off. Astley Hall, Coach House and Park now has a Facebook page, meaning more people get to see behind the scenes and learn about the events and exhibitions that are taking place. Plus in June 2014, Astley Hall was awarded a certificate of excellence from Trip Advisor for consistently gaining top reviews from visitors.’
Additionally, the Chorley Remembers Experience in the Coach House attracted thousands of visitors in the year the country commemorated 100 years since the start of World War I. Councillor Bev Murray who oversees the Astley complex is delighted that more people are taking up the opportunity to appreciate a wonderful historic attraction.
Astley Hall has reopened this March after conservation and restoration work to ensure the historic house remains for future generations to enjoy. Additionally, there will also be further developments in Astley Park this year with a new destination play area due to open in the spring.
She said: ‘Astley Hall’s visitor numbers have been rising steadily for the past few years but 2014 has proven to be an absolutely bumper year for the ‘jewel in Chorley’s crown’. We know many of our visitors are local and we continue to attract school groups who incorporate the history of the Hall into their lessons. This past year we have also seen many visitors from outside the area discovering the hidden treasures of Astley Hall and returning again and we’d like to thank everyone who continues to support the attraction. November was the best month in the year with over 8,000 visitors to Astley Hall alone and it’s events like Astley Illuminated and Derian House’s Winter Sparkle that open it up to a whole new audience. 14
‘Now that more people are visiting the Astley complex we want to build on this and are planning lots of exciting events and exhibitions again this year as well as attracting even more external event organisers who are keen to use Astley Park as a venue.’ added Coun Murray. CHORLEY’S play and recreational facilities are set for a further boost with work due to start on a brand new play area and ball court at Rangletts Recreation Ground in April. Chorley Council has revealed designs for the play area and ball court at the popular recreational ground off Duke Street as part of the redevelopment of Rangletts, which is also set to include a skate and BMX park, allotment space and improvements to footpaths, lighting and green space. The designs for the play area have been done in consultation with children from the Duke Street Primary School Council and focuses on providing lots of different play experiences to challenge the physical, social, educational and creative abilities of each child that uses it. The play area will include timber interactive trails, a cableway, basket swing, spinner roundabout, multi-play unit, toddler multi-play unit, toddler springers and traditional swings. It will also feature three technical pieces of equipment for older children focused on balancing, coordination and agility - The Freeride, Streetboard and Aeroskate.
Councillor Bev Murray, who oversees parks and open spaces at Chorley Council, said: “The play and multi-use games areas are two very important parts of the Rangletts Recreation Ground redevelopment and we are really excited about these concepts.

Work to Start on New Rangletts Play Area
The multi-use games area will provide sports facilities for older children including two closed goal units and basketball hoops. It is hoped that both will be completed in July this year, in time for the school holidays.
“The children from the Duke Street Primary School Council have been extremely helpful telling us what they would like to see included and then voting on the final design. “This will be a dramatic improvement to the play facilities in the area and we hope everyone will use and enjoy the play area and ball court once it is finished. “As part of the redevelopment works, we are also installing new footpaths, which will mean access to the recreation ground will now be from Brindle Street rather than the corner of Duke Street. “There is a lot of work going on across the recreation ground over the next few months and we would like to ask everyone to please bear with us until it is completed.” The £45,000 project is being funded as part of contributions from the nearby Eccleston Park and Duke Street housing developments with a public consultation held with local residents to consider their opinions and ideas of how to improve the space.

Comedian Tiff Stevenson brings her show to Chorley Little Theatre on Saturday 14 March from 8pm to 10pm. Are you a glass half full kind of person? If so, congratulations you are an optimist and this is the show for you. Are you a glass empty kind of person? If so, at least you bought a drink in the first place so you’re still an optimist. Congratulations this is the show for you.

Fresh from the Edinburgh Festival, Tiff Stevenson searches for optimism in a world of Kardashians, guns and Everyday Vodka. A finalist on ITV1’s Show Me the Funny, Tiff Stevenson is a standup comedian, actor and writer, known for her honest material and instantly likeable disposition. In 2006, Tiff first hit the Fringe with a lead role in the Eric Bogosian play, Talk Radio, directed by Stewart Lee. The following year she teamed up with her Talk Radio co-star Phil Nichol & brought their London show Old Rope to Edinburgh for the first of a succession of sell-out festival runs. Old Rope showcases new material from up-andcoming as well as established headline acts and it still plays to capacity crowds every Monday night in London. Her solo Edinburgh stand-up shows, Uncomfortably Numb, Cavewoman, Dictators and Along Came a Spider, have consistently had packed audiences and rave reviews, and in 2012 she won the Mervyn Stutter’s Spirit of the Fringe Award. In 2010 Tiffany starred in Celebrity Autobiography at the Fringe and in the West End alongside David Tennant, Michael Urie, Sally Phillips & Doon Mackichan. Her TV credits include Never Mind The Buzzcocks (BBC Two), The Office (BBC Two), Absolute Power (BBC Two), Balls of Steel (Channel 4), Only Joking (Sky), Celebrity Deal Or No Deal (Channel 4), Live With Gabby (Five) and Show Me The Funny (ITV), performing in the live final at London’s Hammersmith Apollo to millions of viewers. Local Family Wins a Cracking Prize CHRISTMAS may be a distant memory for most but one lucky family from Astley Village received an additional Christmas present this weekend when they were presented with their prize for winning Chorley Council’s Christmas Nutcracker Trail. Eve Wilson and her two children, George, aged 6, and Grace, aged four, were presented with a Kindle Fire HD from TSB, vouchers from Ebb and Flo Bookshop and a copy of the Nutcracker story by the Leader of Chorley Council, Councillor Alistair Bradley. Also joining the presentation were staff from Tesco and the Royal Bank of Scotland who both hosted a Nutcracker soldier.
“We bring these types of attraction to Chorley to encourage people to visit the town centre and to provide our visitors with something extra while they are here. It was great to see so many businesses taking part and we have lots more events and attractions in the pipeline for 2015, starting with the Chorley Grand Prix on Saturday 4 April.”
In the run up to Christmas, the Wilson family successfully hunted down all 15 eight foot tall Nutcracker soldiers, which were hiding in secret locations across Chorley. They were one of hundreds of families to correctly guess the locations and submit their entry to be included in the prize draw.
The locations of the 15 Nutcracker soldiers were:

Chorley to Host Opening National Cycling Race Over 100 top cyclists from across the country will descend on Chorley at Easter on Sat 4th April, as the borough kick starts the British Cycling Elite Road Race Series for 2015. Chorley Council has teamed up with British Cycling and Chorley Building Society to host the event that will see professional riders take on a challenging course around the borough in the first race of the season. The prestigious event will bring thousands of visitors into Chorley and build on the borough’s enthusiasm for cycling. It will also showcase the beautiful borough to a European audience when the event is broadcast on Eurosport. Councillor Alistair Bradley, Leader of Chorley Council, said: ‘People in Chorley have embraced cycling in recent years, particularly since the Manchester Commonwealth Games route was hosted in the borough. This enthusiasm has been reflected in the numbers of people, hundreds of them, who have taken part in our “Sky Rides” which we launched last year with British Cycling. Hosting this elite event will top off what has been a brilliant few years for cycling and will certainly put Chorley on the map. We’re delighted to have the first Elite Series race of the new season and it should provide a boost to the local economy with lots of visitors coming to watch the race.’ British Cycling’s director of cycle sport and membership, Jonny Clay, said: ‘We are all excited to welcome in the new British Cycling Elite Road season and the anticipation is only increased with new location Chorley set to host the opening round. The region has a proud cycle sport history and I’m very hopeful that the Chorley Grand Prix could lead the way to the creation of a Tour of Lancashire in future seasons. However, for now I am simply excited about 2015 and the racing that is going to take place. The appetite for top-level domestic racing has rarely been higher in this country and I’m very confident that the upcoming season will continue to increase competition and conditions for riders, while also entertaining new and existing fans of the sport.’ Chief Executive, Stephen Penlington from Chorley & District Building Society said: ‘We are absolutely delighted to support British Cycling and be a part of this prestigious event. As a local Building Society we are committed to playing our part in the community. Not only is cycling a

great way to keep fit and enjoy the outdoors but it is also good for the environment and can be enjoyed by all the family.’ The race, called the Chorley Grand Prix, is being organised by Chorley Council with sponsorship from Chorley Building Society. It will be held on Saturday 4 April and take in a 100-mile route. The start and finish line will be on Park Road in Chorley town centre with the road race taking in Chorley, Rivington, Belmont, Abbey Village, Withnell, Brinscall, Wheelton, Buckshaw Village and back to Chorley. The riders will complete five laps of the circuit but there will generally be rolling road closures in place, which will mean very minimal disruption to traffic. For further information on the Chorley Grand Prix, people are encouraged to visit chorley. gov.uk like Chorley Council on Facebook or follow @ChorleyCouncil on Twitter.

We meet every Thursday, from 7:00pm until 11:00pm in the upstairs youth room of St Mary’s Parish Centre. The aims of our club are simple: to play tabletop wargames, of any type, and to give our members somewhere spacious and friendly in which they can do just that, and to promote our hobby in a positive way within the local community. Also, through the forums on our site and through the club itself, to encourage our members to try different game systems and help them with the collecting and painting of miniature armies. We play, most frequently, Warhammer 40k, SAGA, and HORDES/WARMACHINE, but we are by no means limited to just these, there is interest enough within the club for games of any type, from any producer, such as Blitzkrieg Commander, Mordheim, Necromunda, Epic, Warmaster, Hail Ceasar, Pike & Shotte, to name but a few and would welcome the opportunity to play such games with new members. With this in mind, we welcome any and all who may want to come along and meet us at the club, or to contact us for more information. www.cack-wargamesclub.net

CHORLEY TRADITIONAL MUSIC SESSIONS
We are a group of local folk musicians who are keen to help up and coming local musicians get some experience of playing their instruments in a (semi) public environment. We do this by running a monthly ‘Slow and Steady’ session in a local community hall on a Saturday afternoon. The session is run by an experienced musician who understands the problems and needs of budding players, and makes sure that the music played is suitable for those who are learning. This is held at Eaves Green Community Centre on the first Saturday of every month. The session costs £2 which includes a set of music (if required) and tea and biscuits. We do not charge for your first visit. The main cost is the hire of the hall. The session runs from 2:00 until 5:00. We cater for most of the common folk instruments and specifically have experienced players for Whistle, Fiddle, Melodeon (G/D), Concertina (English and Anglo), Guitar, Banjo and Mandolin. Other instruments can be accommodated as long as they play in the common folk keys (primarily G and D, perhaps A). We have contacts all over the North West, and could certainly find friendly help for most other instruments.

Why should you install a Resin Drive? That’s simple; our product naturally drains water through the finished surface which means no more puddles. It is also resistant to frost attack, hence giving it all round better traction for tyres and making it better for walking on. Last but not least its up to 10 times more eco friendly than concrete. And don’t forget, we have a great colour range to choose from to give it your personal touch!
