Lancashire women urged to get pretty muddy Lancashire women are being urged to fight dirty when it comes to conquering cancer - by signing up now for an exciting new event from Cancer Research UKโs Race for Life
P
reston has been chosen to host the only Race for Life Pretty Muddy event taking place in the county this summer.
Pretty Muddy is a women-only, non-competitive 5k obstacle course โ with added mud. It will take place for the first time in the city at Prestonโs Moor Park on Saturday, July 18. Cancer Research UKโs Race for Life family of events also includes the 5k and 10k courses, which thousands of women will take on at the same venue on Sunday, May 24 to raise money for life-saving research. Itโs the perfect challenge for those looking to shake off the January blues and commit to get more active in 2015. Every hour, more than four people are diagnosed with cancer in North West. And thatโs why Cancer Research UK is calling on Lancashire women to fight back against this devastating disease by choosing their challenge - Pretty Muddy, 5k or 10k - and signing up now. Laura Taylor, Cancer Research UKโs North West Event Manager, said: โWeโre so excited about launching Race for Life Pretty Muddy in Preston. The event is taking place in the city for the first time and weโre calling on local ladies to sign up now. Weโve no doubt that theyโve got the fighting spirit to get down and dirty in the bid to beat cancer sooner. Pretty Muddy promises all the fun and camaraderie of our much loved 5k and 10k events โ just with an extra serving of mud. Race for Life events are not competitive. They are not about being fit or fast. Women can complete the Pretty Muddy course at their own pace, climbing, jumping, walking and laughing their way around. Itโs about an army of women coming together in the fight against cancer. If youโre looking for an opportunity to get the New Year off to good start, this is the time to commit to Race for Life. With fire in their bellies and trainers at the ready, we know that Preston ladies are up for the challenge.โ Cancer Research UKโs Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of 5k, 10k and Pretty Muddy events which raises millions of pounds every year to help beat 200 different types of cancer. Money raised through Race for Life allows Cancer Research UKโs doctors, nurses and scientists
14
to advance research which is helping to save the lives of men, women and children across the Lancashire. Cancer survival rates have doubled since the 1970s and Cancer Research UKโs work has been at the heart of that progress. But more funds and more supporters are needed to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. Laura continued: โWeโre calling on the brave ladies of Lancashire to pull on their leggings and take on cancer at this yearโs event. Race for Life is to celebrate those who are with us, and also remember those who are not. The atmosphere is electric, our participants are so inspiring and weโre calling on the women of Lancashire to help make 2015 our best year yet.โ To enter Race for Life today go to raceforlife.org or call 0300 123 0770.

Work is underway to replace a foundation beam supporting a wall in the Great Hall
Historic Hall Closed for Vital Repairs Chorleyโs historic hall which was due to reopen to the public on Wednesday (1 April) will remain closed for vital repairs
A
stley Hall has been closed since Christmas whilst conservation work was done to preserve the Grade 1 listed building.
However, this work has revealed the fragility of a main wall in the Great Hall which needs to be dealt with before the Hall can reopen to the public. Jamie Carson, director at Chorley Council, said: โIt is hugely disappointing that the Hall canโt reopen as planned, but it is more important to preserve this magnificent building for future generations. Conservation work started at Christmas and we were hopeful the Hall could reopen in time for Easter, but as the work progressed it unearthed more major issues that have to be dealt with as a matter of urgency. By remaining closed we can get the work done whilst everything is still covered and protected.โ
The closure means that events that were to be held in the Hall will have to be postponed, however, events planned for Astley Park, Coach House, Farmhouse and Walled Garden will be unaffected by the Hallโs closure. The events upcoming affected include: Chorley Photographic Societyโs annual exhibition running from 2nd to 31st May and Museums at Night annual UK festival scheduled for Friday 15 May Jamie added: โI would also just like to reassure those who have booked weddings at Astley Hall between now and July that they will go ahead as planned as they were scheduled to take place in a part of the Hall unaffected by these works. It is disappointing that weโve had to delay the opening but Iโm sure everyone will understand the need for this vital work to be done.โ
The work revealed that a foundation beam which supported a 400-year-old wall in the Hall had rotted and needs to be replaced. Advertise your business call 0800 970 7687 or email info@link-mag.co.uk

Cinema operator signs up to Market Walk Itโs Reel โ residents in Chorley are set to get a new cinema in the town
N
ational chain Reel Cinema has today announced its intention to bring a six-screen complex to the shopping mall as part of extension plans outlined by owners, Chorley Council. The operator is the first business to publicly declare its commitment to the scheme and will enter into a 20-year lease. Gary Hall, Chief Executive of Chorley Council, said: โFeedback from local residents and businesses on the extension plans has proved that people in Chorley are really keen to see a multi-screen cinema in the town centre and we have been working hard to secure it. Getting the first tenant on board is a really important step and weโll be continuing our work to secure lettings on at least 65 per cent of the new units, which is what we want to achieve before any work would start on site.โ 18
Artistโs impression of what the new cinema could look like
KC Suri, Managing Director of Reel Cinema, said: โWeโre really pleased to be signing up to the scheme which is looking to be an exciting development for the town and we look forward to seeing material progress over the next few months. Our operations in this region have recently grown significantly, and as we are looking to continue to expand our business for the foreseeable future, Chorley is an ideal place to do this.โ The proposed ยฃ10 million development will include three large retail units and several branded restaurants alongside the cinema, creating up to 200 jobs and increasing Chorleyโs popularity as a place to visit. If planning permission is given a decision to proceed with the development will be made by full council.

Service offers a lifeline to many
A Meals on Wheels service for older people across Chorley is being extended to offer customers more meals at a cheaper rate
T
he service which was launched last year by Chorley Council has proved a huge success with around 300 hot meals a week being delivered across the borough to people who may find it hard to cook for themselves. Residents who signed up to the scheme can have hot meals delivered seven days a week, however the council has been subsidising up to three a week. Now the council is extending the subsidy to cover up to five meals a week - and new customers who want to see if the scheme will suit them can even get meals delivered at half price for a two week trial. Councillor Peter Wilson, deputy leader of Chorley Council, said: โThe subsidised price means that our older residents can get a hot, nutritious main meal and a dessert up to five days a week for just ยฃ3.65 per day. โWe decided to invest more money into this scheme because the health and wellbeing of our older residents is important to us. More than 100 people are currently benefitting from the meals on wheels service, however we can do more. If you think this might be for you, then why not take advantage of the two week half price trial?โ The nutritious meals are prepared and delivered by Lancashire Fayre and they cater for all dietary requirements. Councillor Hasina Khan spent a morning with Lancashire Fayre proprietor Dave Laithwaite after being impressed with his presentation when he came to speak to the councilโs Equality Forum. She saw where the meals are cooked and how they are packed and put into heated containers in the delivery van before joining him on his rounds. She said: โIt was really touching to see how a lot of the faces of the elderly light up when Dave walks up the drive with their meals. โNot only is just the meal delivered, but Dave will ask how their day was and will make them a cup of tea if they want one with their meal. He also picks up their post from the doormat if needed and checks round the kitchen to ensure any appliances havenโt been left on.

โHowever, the most touching thing about going out delivering the meals was the fact that for a lot of people, Dave is probably the only person they may see or speak to from one day to the next. Itโs a lifeline to many, and it definitely lifts their spirits and therefore impacts positively to improve mental health and wellbeing.โ Mrs Frances Murphy, who is a regular customer, said: โIโm lucky, I have family that call in to see me every day, and I can get out and about with their help. But there are many who donโt see anyone from one day to the next. โThe meals Dave brings are really good, I would urge people who may find it difficult to cook for themselves to give them a try.โ The Meals on Wheels scheme was originally trialled in Mawdesley, Croston, Eccleston and Bretherton and following its success there, it was gradually rolled out across the borough. If you think youโd like to try the Meals on Wheels service, or you know of anyone who you think would benefit from the service, then please contact Chorley Council on 01257 515151.

New Astley Experience opens at Astley Coach House A new pop-up Astley Experience is set to open this weekend while conservation repairs continue at Chorleyโs historic hall
A
stley Hall has been closed since Christmas whilst conservation work was done to preserve the Grade 1 listed building.
Now following the recent announcement that the Hall will have to remain closed until the summer, Chorley Council has created a temporary Astley Experience in the adjacent Coach House building to ensure visitors can continue to see parts of the museum collection and experience the stories and history of Astley Hall. The new experience opened on Saturday 11th April with a display of the Astley Then and Now exhibition that explores the 90th anniversary of the Hall transferring over to Chorley Council. From now until Sunday 24th May, there are Serving Stories workshops from 12 noon until 4pm. Visitors can discover the roles of some of the domestic servants who have lived and worked at Astley, view some of their intriguing tools of the trade and see what life was like in the mid-nineteenth century. From Saturday 30th May until Saturday 27th June, visitors will be able to travel even further back in the Astley timeline to the Tudor period. There will be an opportunity to explore how people dressed, what they ate and visitors can try to work out some of the mystery objects from the late 1570โs. 20
Chorley Councilโs director of public protection, streetscene and community, Jamie Carson, said: โIt was hugely disappointing when we discovered the Hall couldnโt reopen as planned at the beginning of April so we decided to create a temporary Astley Experience to ensure that visitors wonโt miss out on viewing and experiencing an important part of Chorleyโs history. Weโve tried to recreate as much of the Hall and its stories as possible and Iโm sure anyone who visits will be delighted to still be able to journey through history and discover the Hallโs hidden treasures and secrets. People donโt have to book on the experience and it is completely free, plus they can also visit the Chorley Remembers Experience which is open on the top floor of the Coach House. If youโre looking for a great family day out with a history lesson thrown in, the Astley Experience and the delights of Astley Park are perfect for people of all ages.โ The Astley Experience will be open 12 noon until 4pm every weekend and Saturday through to Wednesday during the school holidays. However, due to prior arrangements there will be no activities on Saturday 13th June and Sunday 28th June. For information on the Astley complex and the activities taking place there, like the Astley Hall, Coach House and Park Facebook page.

Boost for play facilities in Chorley
Work in progress: the development of the new destination play area at Astley Park
PLAY areas across the Chorley borough are being dramatically improved to give local children better recreational facilities
A
s part of a five year plan, Chorley Council has set about improving the play equipment in a number of parks and recreation grounds while also building completely new facilities including the much anticipated destination play area in Astley Park. One of the latest play areas to be given an overhaul is Jubilee Recreation Ground in Adlington. New equipment have been installed in the last month which includes a basket swing, two flat seat swings, a hiphop see-saw, a multi-unit climbing frame and slide, a turn fly, supernova, picnic benches, new seating, a skyrail and a titan swing. Funding for this has come from section 106 money from nearby housing developments, Chorley Council and Adlington Town Council. Also set for an upgrade is the play area on Stansted Road in Chorley with new equipment being installed in the next few weeks. The next phase of the redevelopment of Rangletts Recreation Ground is also moving at pace with designs for the new skate and BMX park unveiled this week. The layout includes a mix of street and transition elements with high drop-offs, long fly outs and smooth undulating transitions. Features include bowls, a bowled mini ramp, ledge, flat bank, jump box, quarter-pipe hip, volcano and wall-rides.
new multi-use games area and extended play facilities, which are due to be completed in the summer. Recent visitors to Astley Park will also have noticed that the new Royalists and Roundheads-themed destination play area is also starting to take shape with the majority of play equipment installed and the castle ruins nearly built. The destination play area is still on schedule to open in late spring Councillor Bev Murray, who has responsibility for play and recreational facilities at Chorley Council, said: รข€˜Residents have been telling us that they want better play facilities for local children across the Chorley borough and we have listened to their suggestions. By the time summer arrives, children will have lots of choice on where to play and it will be fantastic to see them enjoying excellent facilities right on their doorstep. We want to ensure that everyone across the borough has the opportunity to access good sport, physical activity and recreational facilities and these recent developments are just the start of a programme of investment in our parks, playing pitches and open spaces.รข€™ The designs for the new play areas have been produced in consultation with local children, skate groups and parents.
Work will start on the new skate and BMX park in July and will follow on from the development of the brand

We meet every Thursday, from 7:00pm until 11:00pm in the upstairs youth room of St Maryโs Parish Centre. The aims of our club are simple: to play tabletop wargames, of any type, and to give our members somewhere spacious and friendly in which they can do just that, and to promote our hobby in a positive way within the local community. Also, through the forums on our site and through the club itself, to encourage our members to try different game systems and help them with the collecting and painting of miniature armies. We play, most frequently, Warhammer 40k, SAGA, and HORDES/WARMACHINE, but we are by no means limited to just these, there is interest enough within the club for games of any type, from any producer, such as Blitzkrieg Commander, Mordheim, Necromunda, Epic, Warmaster, Hail Ceasar, Pike & Shotte, to name but a few and would welcome the opportunity to play such games with new members. With this in mind, we welcome any and all who may want to come along and meet us at the club, or to contact us for more information. www.cack-wargamesclub.net

We do this by running a monthly โSlow and Steadyโ session in a local community hall on a Saturday afternoon. The session is run by an experienced musician who understands the problems and needs of budding players, and makes sure that the music played is suitable for those who are learning. This is held at Eaves Green Community Centre on the first Saturday of every month. The session costs ยฃ2 which includes a set of music (if required) and tea and biscuits. We do not charge for your first visit. The main cost is the hire of the hall. The session runs from 2:00 until 5:00. We cater for most of the common folk instruments and specifically have experienced players for Whistle, Fiddle, Melodeon (G/D), Concertina (English and Anglo), Guitar, Banjo and Mandolin. Other instruments can be accommodated as long as they play in the common folk keys (primarily G and D, perhaps A). We have contacts all over the North West, and could certainly find friendly help for most other instruments.
