WINTER SUN

Winter

By Danielle Lade

T

he days were longer, the evenings were lighter, which is lovely! And then Autumn starts to hit and you can feel the days creeping into their Winter state. With the UK’s weather, one thing we seem to be able to count on is a relatively dreary and gloomy Winter! It’s not quite near enough to the jovialities of the end of the year (a season I won’t mention already in September!) However, a break away in October or November is just the thing to lift the spirits and bridge that gap between Summer and Decembers good cheer! But where is best to find the heat and sunshine in the Autumn/Winter months? With Australia a bit too far away for a quick break away; which options are slightly closer to home, a bit more affordable and more importantly, going to be bright and sunny?!

Southern Cyprus offers

temperatures of a perfect pleasing 24 degrees with minimal rain fall levels so a good beach holiday option. You can expect a good 9 hours of sunshine and a flight of 5 hours from a number of UK airports such as Birmingham, Luton, Gatwick, Leeds and Manchester.

For a real variety, Tenerife offers both busy resorts for party goers, posh luxury hotels, historic ports for sightseers and lush green mountains for avid walkers. With a flight time of 4 and a half hours from most major airports and a real range of budgets to suit most, it’s a great option for Winter sun seekers.

To make the most of your leftover sun screen, check out our list of the best most Summer sun destinations...

Travel Also within 4 hours flying time, is the exotic destination of Marrakesh. During October, there are a number of religious festivals which will provide a celebratory feel to your holiday. The weather can see highs of 27 degrees but on average is about 21 degrees, the one thing to bear in mind is the slightly higher chance of rain that October brings. If you’re a keen golfer, a less than three hour flight will take you to the Algarve, a golfers paradise and temperatures staying a warm 23 degrees well into October with a good seven hours of sunshine. And for any culture vultures, an ideal late Autumn location is Sicily, you’re looking at a perfectly respectable 17 degrees average weather but a lovely nine hours to enjoy the stunning Italian architecture and monasteries that Sicily has on offer. Or another popular Italian island at that time of year is Sardinia, which in the mountainous area of Barbagia, between September and December, celebrate a series of festivals. Streets are transformed with markets and local craftsmen, you’ll likely find a local who will happily open his dining room to you and your family! The weather is likely to be very similar to Sicily.

If you’re looking for a newly emerging holiday maker favourite, Dubrovnik in Croatia is extremely popular in the summer months but as autumn falls, the city takes on a more relaxed demeanour and you can explore without the crowds! Temperatures can often reach 25 degrees so you certainly won’t miss out on the warm weather.

With a slightly longer flight time, you can get to Dubai in seven hours with an average of 29 degree heat and ten hours of sunshine, with a very unlikely chance of rainfall, sun seekers are bound to be rewarded in October, with the humidity much less oppressive than in the height of Dubai’s summer, it’s a great time to explore this modern and ever expanding location. But you don’t have to hop on a plane to find some more reliable weather, a great recommendation for sandy beaches and 100km of cycle tracks, you can hope on a train from London to La Rochelle and regular buses will then take you to Île de Ré, a pretty island just off the West coast of France. With an average high of 23 degrees in October, you’ll think you’re such further afield! Prices for each destination will be slightly less than the peak Summer months and if you keep an eye out on the websites for the more local airports to you, not only can you often find good deals, it gives you a cheaper start to your holiday!

So don’t pack away those shorts and sunglasses just yet, why not escape Travelling in October/November can often the cloud and rain and escape to a work in your favour, as you can avoid the sun trap paradise! Walk into a Healthier lifestyle Find Your Feet health walks, which take in some of Chorley’s best scenery, are held every day of the working week, every week of the year, all are free and there’s no need to book.

ABOVE: Health walkers in Chorley who’ve raised £1300 for the RNLI over the last 12 months.

T

here are walks in Astley Park, along the canal from Tatton, round Adlington, in Croston, through Yarrow Valley Country Park, and in Whittle-leWoods with a new one soon to start in Anderton. Councillor Bev Murray, who looks after leisure activities for Chorley Council, said: “Our health walks continue to be a great success and I would urge people who’ve not yet been on any to come along and find out just how enjoyable they are. “We are also looking for people to train as health walk leaders. Our walks have front and back leaders so that people can walk at their own pace. You don’t need any experience of navigation or map reading as all the routes are planned in advance, we just need people who are friendly, approachable and happy to chat with people. “If anyone has been on one of our walks and would like to train as a leader, they should phone us on 01257 515151 or email contact@chorley.gov.uk. The next training course is planned for 16 September and it’s free.” The walks are: · Monday at Tatton from 1pm to 2.30pm. Meet at Tatton Recreation Ground off Silverdale Road for a walk along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. · Tuesday at Adlington from 10am to 11am. Meet at Jubilee Recreation Ground, Park Road for a walk along the canal and surrounding countryside.

· Wednesday at Croston from 10.45am to 11.45am. Meet on the car park at Out Lane, next to the doctors’ surgery for a walk in this historic village. · Thursday at Yarrow Valley Country Park. Meet outside Treeface Café, off Birkacre Road for a walk through the country park. · Friday at Whittle-le-Woods from 9.30am to 10.30am. Meet at the War Memorial car park, off Preston Road for a walk round this village. Councillor Murray added “Our walks are officially recognised by health professionals as purposeful brisk walks designed specifically to help you improve your fitness and keep you healthy. There are few steps and stiles and they are on gentle gradients, so they are ideal for people who want to increase their levels of physical activity, especially if recommended to do so by their GP. There’s no need to book, just turn up at any or all of the walks in suitable clothing for the weather conditions and wearing sturdy footwear.” · Kind-hearted health walkers in Chorley have recently donated £1,300 to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. They choose a charity each year to support and raise money over 12 months from the sale of cups of tea they enjoyed after the walks. In the past five years, they’ve donated nearly £5000 to charity. The chosen charity for this forthcoming year is Genesis Dementia Day Care (Chorley).

· Wednesday at Astley Park from 10.30am to 11.30am. Meet outside Astley Hall for a walk through the park.

Historic Hall reopens CHORLEY’S historic hall reopened to the public last month following vital repairs needed to preserve the Grade 1 listed building

A

stley Hall reopened its doors to the public on Saturday 29 August having been closed since Christmas for conservation works.

That work revealed that a foundation beam supporting the 400-year-old wall in the Great Hall, owned and managed by Chorley Council, had rotted and needed replacing. Councillor Bev Murray, who oversees Astley Hall for Chorley Council, said: “We had hoped that once this was done, the Hall would reopen. “But whilst the panelling was being taken off the wall to do this work, it was discovered that the timber wall frame was not properly tied to the front wall of the Hall and so we’ve had to have bespoke plates made. “We were lucky enough to able to open the Hall just for the weekend of the Chorley Flower Show to give people a chance to look around and enjoy the spectacular floral displays that adorned the rooms. Then it closed again for some finishing off works to be done.

10

“We are disappointed that the Hall had to close to the public for so long this year, but it was essential to get this urgent repair carried out to preserve it for future generations.” Conservation consultant, Geoff Maybank who has been overseeing the work at the Hall, said the complexity of assessing how the Hall had been constructed had taken a lot of effort and that once work started it turned out there were a lot more repairs needed than expected. He said that the repairs had been carried out using traditional materials and so any replacement parts had to be specially made. He added: “The Hall is 450 years old, it’s bound to have issues, but we are hopeful we’ve cured the problem.” The Hall will be open from 12 noon to 4.30pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Flower power attracts thousands to Chorley Thousands enjoy Astley Hall’s ‘Picnic in the Park’

T

he inaugural show, organised by Chorley Council, attracted 10,000 people to Astley Hall, Coach House and Park to see the very best in horticultural displays with people from all over the country attending and taking part. Visitors were wowed by the variety and quality of displays with some saying it was on a par with some of the country’s other top shows in just its first year. Councillor Peter Wilson, Deputy Leader of Chorley Council, said: “We’ve put a lot of investment into putting Chorley on the map and making it place people want to come whether that’s to live, locate their business here or spend their leisure time. “Judging by the comments we received over the weekend it was a fantastic success and we saw people from all over the North West coming to Chorley and saying how great it is and that makes us feel very proud. “We are putting on these big events to attract people in because it brings people in and that will help boost the local economy, which is one of our main priorities.” The show saw professional exhibitors coming from as far afield as Scotland and Scarborough and residents also got the chance to showcase their own talents by entering the amateur sections.

14

TOP: The Evaders’ Garden was unveiled in its new permanent home ABOVE: Thousands of people passed through the marquees There were plenty of trade stalls, a floral art exhibition, Chorley’s award-winning RHS Chelsea Flower Show exhibit was unveiled in its new permanent home and the magnificent Astley Hall was transformed into a blaze of colour with beautiful floral decorations. “It was a tremendous effort to get a show of this type and scale delivered and now we want to build it for years to come and make it an established attraction in the North West,” said Councillor Wilson. “We’ve already had loads of people saying they want to come back next year and I’d like to thank all the exhibitors who were very encouraging and supportive throughout. “I’d also like to thank all the volunteers who took part and the Chorley and District Gardening Society, who played a huge role in organising the amateur competitions.”

Get online and love the benefits If you think surfing, skype and synch sound like sports activities, then a new campaign being launched by Chorley Council may be for you.

I

t’s aimed at getting more people using the internet on a regular basis so that they benefit from doing things online.

The campaign, targeting people who currently don’t have online access as well as those who do, but don’t really know where to start, kicks off with a Techy Tea Party at Tatton Community Centre on Thursday 30 July. Councillor Peter Wilson, deputy leader of Chorley Council, said: “The internet has been around for years now providing great opportunities for those who have access to it and use it regularly. They can surf the world wide web to book the best holidays, find the best schools, see what’s going on where, find the cheapest deals on their shopping and so much more.

Councillor Graham Dunn, who oversees digital access for Chorley Council, urges people to get online and enjoy the benefits of surfing the web For more information, please contact policy and engagement assistant Vanessa Fitzgerald on 01257 515033.

“But there are still great numbers of people who don’t use the internet for whatever reason, whether they are reluctant to do so, or are perhaps even afraid to use it, and they are missing out both socially and financially and it’s this we want to address.

Eaves Green Community Centre:

“Our aim is to not only offer people the opportunity to learn how to use the internet, so they can come to love it and in turn live with its great benefits, but also to develop a directory listing the free public access points across the borough for those who don’t have access at home.

· Wednesday 16 September, 7pm-9.30pm

“We are committed to making sure the internet is available for everybody to access and showing them it can be at the heart of all activities and opportunities in their neighbourhood - as well as saving them money!” The council also intends to make greater use of digital services to improve efficiency and ultimately save council taxpayers money and to make the most of this people need to know what services they can access online, how they do it and what the benefits are. The training sessions, in partnership with learndirect, are being held at:

· Monday 7 September, 1.30pm-4.30pm · Thursday 10 September, 3pm-6pm

Fairview Community Centre, Adlington: · Tuesday 15 September, 10am-1pm · Tuesday 17 September, 1.30pm-4.30pm · Saturday 19 September, 1.30pm-4.30pm Councillor Wilson added: “So if you’ve always wanted to get on the internet but don’t know where to start, or you know someone who you think could benefit from the opportunities you enjoy by surfing the web, then please get in touch with us by phoning 01257 515151, or if you already have internet access, email us at contact@ chorley.gov.uk”

Councillor Bev Murray, right, with volunteers and supporters at Coronation Recreation Ground with the Green Flag the Rec has won.

Flags fly high over Chorley GREEN flags are flying high over Chorley as its popular parks and recreation grounds have once again won national recognition for their quality and standards.

A

stley Park, Yarrow Valley Country Park, Withnell Local Nature Reserve and Tatton Recreation Ground can all continue to fly the flags after once again meeting the tough standards put in place in the Green Flag Awards for parks and green spaces. And this year for the first time Coronation Recreation Ground can proudly fly a flag having won the award at its first attempt. Councillor Bev Murray, who looks after the parks and open spaces for Chorley Council, said: “I’m absolutely delighted that our parks have won the recognition they deserve for another year running, and that Coronation Rec has received one at the first time of entering. “This is a great achievement and is testament to the hard work and dedication from all our staff and the community groups and volunteers who do so much to help and support us. “We get lots of good feedback from people who use our parks and recreation grounds, but it’s nice to know that we’re recognised nationally for consistently meeting the high standards they demand for these awards.” Yarrow Valley Country Park has won the Green Flag for the 10th consecutive years, Withnell and Tatton for the seventh and Astley Park for the fourth. Now Coronation Rec can proudly fly the flag.

Following consultations with the local community, major improvements are planned for Coronation Rec including works to the toilets, the provision of a café and an astro turf pitch, refurbishment of the tennis courts and improvements to the children’s play area. Councillor Murray added: “There is lots of enthusiasm from people in the area for Coronation Rec and a Friends of Coronation Recreation Ground is being set up. It is this kind of partnership working which helps us to continue to improve and maintain our parks and open spaces as places for local people, and visitors to the area, to relax and enjoy.” If you would like to join the Friends of Coronation Recreation Ground, the next meeting is being held on Wednesday 9 September at 6.30pm in the bar at St Mary’s Club, on Devonshire Road. Please phone 01257 515151 for more information. The Green Flag Awards are judged by an army of more than 700 green space experts, who volunteer their time to visit applicant sites and assess them against eight strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability and community involvement. International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme. All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the thousands of men and women, both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”

The Hall is set within the beautiful surroundings of Astley Park which include historic woodland, a lake, a fully renovated Victorian walled garden alongside clean and modern facilities for visitors to enjoy. The Hall is perhaps best known for its stunning Jacobean plasterwork ceilings and the house is built around an internal Elizabethan courtyard. The four wings of the house were extended by the families who lived here and most of the original features are retained to this day. The walled garden is a dedicated event space and since the Heritage Lottery funded renovation project in 2009 it has built up a varied programme of cultural events throughout the year. The east facing part of the walled garden is home to a community food growing project and includes a small orchard alongside raised beds full of vegetables, fruits, herbs and salads. Much of the produce is used by Café Ambio, the onsite café within the Coach House building. Café Ambio is open 7 days a week. The team are passionate about locally sourced homemade food, freshly baked scones, cakes, quality coffees and refreshments. Phone: 01257 515151

We meet every Thursday, from 7:00pm until 11:00pm in the upstairs youth room of St Mary’s Parish Centre. The aims of our club are simple: to play tabletop wargames, of any type, and to give our members somewhere spacious and friendly in which they can do just that, and to promote our hobby in a positive way within the local community. Also, through the forums on our site and through the club itself, to encourage our members to try different game systems and help them with the collecting and painting of miniature armies. We play, most frequently, Warhammer 40k, SAGA, and HORDES/WARMACHINE, but we are by no means limited to just these, there is interest enough within the club for games of any type, from any producer, such as Blitzkrieg Commander, Mordheim, Necromunda, Epic, Warmaster, Hail Ceasar, Pike & Shotte, to name but a few and would welcome the opportunity to play such games with new members. With this in mind, we welcome any and all who may want to come along and meet us at the club, or to contact us for more information. www.cack-wargamesclub.net

We are a group of local folk musicians who are keen to help up and coming local musicians get some experience of playing their instruments in a (semi) public environment. We do this by running a monthly ‘Slow and Steady’ session in a local community hall on a Saturday afternoon. The session is run by an experienced musician who understands the problems and needs of budding players, and makes sure that the music played is suitable for those who are learning. This is held at Eaves Green Community Centre on the first Saturday of every month. The session costs £2 which includes a set of music (if required) and tea and biscuits. We do not charge for your first visit. The main cost is the hire of the hall. The session runs from 2:00 until 5:00. We cater for most of the common folk instruments and specifically have experienced players for Whistle, Fiddle, Melodeon (G/D), Concertina (English and Anglo), Guitar, Banjo and Mandolin. Other instruments can be accommodated as long as they play in the common folk keys (primarily G and D, perhaps A). We have contacts all over the North West, and could certainly find friendly help for most other instruments.
