Books are back in town

The much-loved literary festival, ‘What’s Your Story, Chorley?‘ returned for a second year in April as families from across the borough flocked to the town centre for a celebration of the written word.

oth children and adults were amazed by exclusive performances from top storytellers who brought the words to life, letting imaginations run wild. The day-long festival, organised by Chorley Council and The Creative Network, took place on Saturday 24th April at a number of different venues across the town centre and featured a variety of workshops including creative writing, meet-the-author sessions and tips on how to get published. Gary Hall, Chief Executive at Chorley Council, said: ‘The power of the written word is extraordinary and this festival is a really great way for people of all ages to have fun with reading, writing and listening. There was a real buzz around the town centre on Saturday and we received a great deal of positive feedback via social media from attendees who really enjoyed the event. “What’s Your Story, Chorley?” has been a renowned success in the two years that we have held it and we hope to continue to grow it, making it bigger and better for future years.’ Over 60 performers entertained people at 10 locations in the town centre ranging from Chorley Library and Goodies Coffee Shop, to Ebb and Flo bookshop, Market Walk and Knitty Nora’s. Grupo SambAfriq treated visitors to a dance and percussion spectacular as they performed as part of the event at Chorley Interchange and in Market Street.

Nigel Stewart, of the Creative Network, who masterminded the idea behind the event, along with 2QT publishing, the library, and Ebb and Flo Bookshop, said: ‘It’s great to put on family events in Chorley that really bring the community together and get minds flowing. The event was a real team effort and I would like to thank everybody who gave up their time to make it possible.’ Visit chorley.gov.uk/whatson to find information on other events taking place in Chorley over the next few months, including Theatre in the Park presents: Love’s Labour’s Lost, a musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic.

uckshaw based digital & events agency, Marvel At Everything Ltd has been shortlisted as a finalist in the 2015 E3 Business Awards which will be held at the Macron Stadium in Bolton on Thursday 11th June. The company, which specialises in marketing communications across various platforms including multi media, events organisation, signage, printing and branding, was selected from amongst hundreds of nominees across the North West to become one of the finalists for the prestigious New Business Start –Up Of The Year category. Speaking on behalf of the company, Managing Director, Wayne Taylor said: ‘Marvel is a full service agency offering our clients everything they need on a daily basis. We specialise in digital, online and motor dealer events, so by combining our experience we developed a clever online booking portal to help customers connect with the dealers more effectively for their events. The effects were so good that we increased the number of appointments for one event by nearly 60%.’ ‘Any finalist this year has already achieved something special,” said Mubarak Chati, managing director of 1 Events Media, which hosts the E3 Awards. “Each year, we notice a marked increase in the number of nominations and, in 2015, we’ve seen a huge leap. Numbers were up more than 30% on 2014, and it’s clear that the standard is rising steadily, too. We’ve had hundreds of nominations from across the whole of the North West. We always get a strong turn-out from the cities - Manchester, Liverpool and so on but this year, I’m delighted that we’re getting a lot more entries from rural areas and smaller towns. There’s also been much more representation on the part of charities, social enterprises, young entrepreneurs and women. The E3 Awards are all about celebrating diversity in business, so this

is wonderful to see. Given the high number and the high calibre of entries, we certainly presented the Nominations Panel with a very difficult challenge. For Marvel At Everything Ltd to have been named as a finalist is an achievement of which it should be very proud.’ More information about Marvel At Everything Ltd can be found on its website www.marvelateverything. co.uk or by calling 01772 457621. Experience the great indoors Experience the British music festival experience without the threat of rain or trips to the portaloos of doom as ‘Glastonferret’ the original indoor turfed festival returns to The Ferret in July

A

rguably one of the finest and most unique venues in the Lancashire, The Ferret in Preston has, and continues, to be an outlet for the finest and most original acts currently slogging their way across the UK live circuit. Whilst the music scene continues to be disregarded by robots glued to ‘Britain’s Got The Clone Factor’ on the moron box every Saturday night, the good folk at The Ferret are giving you access to something real, something you can make your own and love like some kind of wayward child with a potty mouth and disregard for ‘the rules’. Music with feeling and emotion. ‘Glastonferret’ one of the jewels in the venues crown, is back for another year, bigger and better than ever. There is turf on the whole inside of the venue, for that great outdoors feeling, hay-bales to sit on, guest craft ales and an otherwise fully stocked bar, a second bar filled with cider and summery drinks, a BBQ outside featuring world-famous ‘Ferret Burgers’ and hotdogs, DJs and other acts packed into a tent in the beer garden, and, most importantly, three days filled with brilliant and diverse acts on the stages. Events run from Friday night until Sunday night. Friday 8pm - midnight, Saturday 12pm - 2am and 22

Sunday 12pm - midnight, with acts playing and food and drink available all day. The Saturday night sees the venue open until 2am! With DJs and a post show party. From 12pm-3pm Saturday and Sunday, there is a live open stage with free entry, featuring open mic acts all afternoon before the event begins. Line Up: Friday: Shields, Sweet Deals On Surgery, Doppelganger, New York Tourists. Saturday: Then Thickens, Kagoule, Rook & The Ravens, Jordan Allan, Seamus Mcloughlin, Pinstripe Pigeon Band, Go Around Captain, Antelopes, Breaking Waves, Jekyll. Sunday: The Folkestra, Bees Of Burden, Tales Of Two Counties, Billy Bibby, Bear Around Your Neck, Sean Keefe & The Diableros, Mog Stanley, Adam Shaw, The Sweeney Astray, The Porter & May. ‘Glastonferret’ at The Ferret, 55 Fylde Road, PR1 2XQ Preston, Lancashire. Friday 3rd, Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th July. For further information head to www.theferret.info Main photo by Arlen Connelly

The Hall is set within the beautiful surroundings of Astley Park which include historic woodland, a lake, a fully renovated Victorian walled garden alongside clean and modern facilities for visitors to enjoy. The Hall is perhaps best known for its stunning Jacobean plasterwork ceilings and the house is built around an internal Elizabethan courtyard. The east facing part of the walled garden is home to a community food growing project and includes a small orchard alongside raised beds full of vegetables, fruits, herbs and salads. We meet every Thursday, from 7:00pm until 11:00pm in the upstairs youth room of St Mary’s Parish Centre. The aims of our club are simple: to play tabletop wargames, of any type, and to give our members somewhere spacious and friendly in which they can do just that, and to promote our hobby in a positive way within the local community. Also, through the forums on our site and through the club itself, to encourage our members to try different game systems and help them with the collecting and painting of miniature armies. We play, most frequently, Warhammer 40k, SAGA, and HORDES/WARMACHINE, but we are by no means limited to just these, there is interest enough within the club for games of any type, from any producer, such as Blitzkrieg Commander, Mordheim, Necromunda, Epic, Warmaster, Hail Ceasar, Pike & Shotte, to name but a few and would welcome the opportunity to play such games with new members. With this in mind, we welcome any and all who may want to come along and meet us at the club, or to contact us for more information. www.cack-wargamesclub.net

We are a group of local folk musicians who are keen to help up and coming local musicians get some experience of playing their instruments in a (semi) public environment. We do this by running a monthly ‘Slow and Steady’ session in a local community hall on a Saturday afternoon. The session is run by an experienced musician who understands the problems and needs of budding players, and makes sure that the music played is suitable for those who are learning. This is held at Eaves Green Community Centre on the first Saturday of every month. The session costs £2 which includes a set of music (if required) and tea and biscuits. We do not charge for your first visit. The main cost is the hire of the hall. The session runs from 2:00 until 5:00. We cater for most of the common folk instruments and specifically have experienced players for Whistle, Fiddle, Melodeon (G/D), Concertina (English and Anglo), Guitar, Banjo and Mandolin. Other instruments can be accommodated as long as they play in the common folk keys (primarily G and D, perhaps A). We have contacts all over the North West, and could certainly find friendly help for most other instruments.
