Fleetwood Gym Team of the Month -Under 10’ On a wet miserable Thursday night in October a boy in a blue tracksuit made a solitary figure on King George’s playing field. Waiting for his coach and fellow players to arrive for training, it was apparent that this team had fallen apart. With a new coaching team in place, led by Sam Bowker (Team Manager), and some fresh players, only two months later on the 7th December 2013, Fleetwood Gym under 10s recorded their biggest ever win 15-0 and this astonishing transformation was complete. The team continues to go from strength to strength with organised training sessions being held on a Thursday night at 6pm on Fleetwood High School by qualified coaches. They are already preparing for next seasons 9 a-side format and are on the lookout for new players and, with an emphasis on fun, skills and learning, there is now a sunny outlook for the youngsters in yellow and blue.

Ingredients

Preparation

400g linguine or similar 150g clams, cleaned and scrubbed 250g broccoli White wine or fish stock 4 cloves of garlic, finely chopped or crushed 1 small bunch of parsley, roughly chopped 1 small bunch of coriander, roughly chopped 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped 2 tablespoons of olive oil Salt and pepper Parmesan to finish

1. Cut the broccoli into florets and cook for 3 minutes in boiling salted water. Blanch immediately in cold water to stop them from over cooking. 2. Steam the clams in a little water, wine or stock for 5 to 10 minutes or until their shells open. Drain well. 3. Sauté the garlic, coriander, parsley, chilli, broccoli and clams in the olive oil with a little white wine in a frying pan. Add salt and pepper to taste. 4. Meanwhile cook the pasta 'al dente', so it is tender but still has a little bite. Drain but keep behind a little of the pasta water. 5. Add the cooked pasta to the broccoli and clams (add a little pasta water if necessary) and sauté briefly to allow the flavours to mingle. 6. Sprinkle with grated parmesan to taste.



We also welcome sufferers of other neurological conditions. Starting in the New Year, a gentle exercise class will be included in our drop-in sessions, which are held every Wednesday. No special clothing needed, just wear something comfortable. We can also provide counselling if it is required. But mainly, our purpose is to provide a bit of chat and company over a cup of tea and biscuits. You can be sure of a warm welcome. It is amazing what a difference this can make whatever your condition. The saying “A trouble shared is a trouble halved” is very true and you realise that you are not alone and we can all help each other. A Parkinson’s nurse visits us on the first Wednesday of the month and she is proving very helpful to a lot of people. You can just turn up. You don’t need a referral from your G.P. We are very accessible, the trams and buses stop close by, there is no problem parking and the ferry is just over the road for our Over-Wyre friends. We all live or work in Fleetwood and want to kick start an exciting regeneration of our often forgotten and overlooked fine old fishing port. We plan on providing an Arts, Heritage and Community Centre where people can meet, learn, work and be entertained in a creative community space. We hope to build on this further by working with local councils, schools, organisations and venues to provide a wide range of activities, services and events that together will form a new cultural quarter which the people of Fleetwood will help to shape and be proud of. Obviously this won’t happen over night. There are plans to be made, a building to find and funds to be raised and we need your support. Swimarathon Our annual Swimarathon will be held at Fleetwood Swimming Baths on Saturday 15th March 2014. The Principal Charity is for the local branch of the Alzheimer’s. Money raised will be used to train much needed Volunteers. Will any persons or organisations wishing to take part, please contact me for an application form. Swimming times are 10, 11 and 12 with seven teams per hour. Many of you have supported this event for many years, but once again I am seeking your support. Went home happy with an evening to remember.

THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF RACING A Happy and Prosperous New Year

t this time of year it’s always good to take stock and reflect on the past 12 months as well as looking forward to another exciting year at the Mount Racing Club. It certainly has been at times quite a testing year but hopefully now all our injuries and setbacks are behind us and we can kick back on and enjoy some more memorable days out in the winners enclosures up and down the land. January 2013 and it all started so well, fresh from the victories of Valantino Oyster and Lord Lansing in France and Lokis Strike excellent 2nd at a Redcar, we looked forward to the New Year with excitement and high hopes. Loki continued his fine run on the All weather when posting respectable placings 4th and 3rd before suffering a tendon injury that would go on to rule him out of the forthcoming Turf season. This was a cruel blow as he’s a lightly raced horse who was just starting to peak and one which we have high hopes for. More encouraging news was coming from the gallop reports of our unraced 2yo filly Eva Clare who was certainly catching the eye. As her debut loomed and excitement grew we were dealt another blow as she suffered a chip on the knee, basically a small piece of floating bone that would have to be removed by keyhole surgery at Newmarket. Coming on the back of Lokis injury this was another blow and one that would

go on to prevent Eva from running in the Turf season. Luckily with the good connections we have in the racing world we were able to substitute several horses on short term leases and all our owners were treated to plenty of days out and gallops morning through out the year to compensate. The good news is now that both our horses are fine and fully recovered and we can look forward to them making up for lost time in 2014. Eva Clare is one who we are in particular looking forward to seeing as we believe she will be a filly with a very bright future in front of her. We are also looking to bring in a dual purpose horse with top Northern trainer Micky Hammond, one who we can aim at both codes of racing Jumps and Flat. So to reflect all though we’ve had setbacks we are hoping that 2014 can prove to be our best year ever and one that can prove to be very successful for all those involved with the Mount Racing Club. FY7 Community Beat Hello It’s early December and I’m told this article is for the January edition of The Link. Peering into my crystal ball I’m thinking we can report that the Christmas holidays have been quiet regarding crime and anti-social behaviour. I’m hoping noone will have drunk excessively and ended up on the wrong side of the law and that nobody got behind the wheel whilst drunk! You’ll know by now whether the crystal ball was right or wrong, if you follow us on Facebook (Fleetwood Area Police) you will have had the most up to date news from us right through Christmas. (As I type I’ve heard on my radio that somebody has just been arrested for drink driving and that he can barely even walk!) Regarding our Facebook account, this is updated by police officers within the Neighbourhood Team when they’re passing through the station, usually at the same time as they eat their sandwiches on their break! It’s proving to be very popular and we will be holding regular Q&A sessions for those that can’t get to any of our PACT surgeries throughout the month. We’re still pretty new to it; we’re learning and wow, if we read some of the comments posted by our followers you sure like to tell us when we don’t get it quite right! We’ve had some good results with our CCTV identification appeals and hope we can continue to build on that success. I now oversee the page for Thornton Cleveleys too so spread the Facebook word! Different teams within the Police work towards different local priorities, for example, Immediate Response work 24/7 dealing with emergencies and processing detained people, Planned Response deal with appointments, taking crime details and begin

investigations and Neighbourhood Policing (me and my team) deal with antisocial behaviour, nuisance neighbours and persistent offenders aiming for a long term solution working with many other agencies. Sadly, you may have seen in the papers and on television that the children and baby section of the cemetery was subject to criminal damage and theft from the graves in November. This has added to the tremendous grief already suffered by the families and we are doing everything we can to find the person responsible and prosecute. Community Beat Managers, PC Vicky Merrill and Gemma Sandham are also working with a group of enthusiastic volunteers to establish a committee, ‘Friends of Fleetwood Cemetery’ in order to collectively prevent such crimes happening again. We have a PACT drop-in surgery at Fleetwood Police Station on the first Thursday of each month between 1pm3pm. The main PACT surgery will be at Asda on Saturday 18th January between 1pm & 3pm. If you live on Rossall ward, there is a surgery between 2pm-4pm each Monday at Eden Avenue Community Centre. If you can’t make any of these surgeries, simply call us on 101; we will always come out and see you if you prefer at your home address.
