Fleetwood Community Firework Extravaganza is Changing Venue! Due to the impending sea defence works on the sea wall at Rossall, the venue for the Annual Firework celebrations will take place this year at Marine Hall in Fleetwood on the 5th November. This year’s celebrations promise to be bigger than ever with live music from local bands The Jepps and Belvadere and ending with a spectacular Firework Display. Gates will open at 5.30pm, live music will commence from 6pm with the Firework Extravaganza kicking off from 7.30pm. This event is now in its 5th year and has contributed to a significant reduction in anti social behaviour and illegal bonfires throughout the town. Families have been able to enjoy all the festivities associated

with the 5th November in a safe and organised environment. Over the years we have seen crowds of up to five thousand, which shows tremendous support from the Fleetwood Community, and proves an event like this benefits the whole town. There will no charge this year for people attending but donations are appreciated to ensure the people of Fleetwood can continue to celebrate the 5th November safely and enjoy a night of entertainment along with a professional firework display. Please come and join us in celebrating safely and enjoy the music of our talented young people. Great menu, great prices and superb setting. Graham Alexander is full of confidence going into Saturday’s crunch clash against League Two leaders Chesterfield. Town have beaten both Bristol Rovers and League One side Crewe Alexandra in the past week, scoring seven in the process and conceding just once. Four of those came in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy victory over the Alex on Tuesday night, leaving the Town boss set for a big test against the Spireites this weekend. “We go into Saturday’s game feeling confident and we’re looking forward to it,” said Alexander. “We know it’s going to be tough, but we’re different opponents for them. “It’s been a really pleasing couple of games in the last week. Everyone’s played their part, gotten a start and done really well. It’s important we get back to being hard to beat because I thought we had gone away from that a little bit on Tuesday. “We’ve got a very good goalkeeper in Scott Davies but we don’t want to be relying on him because it’s a team effort. We conceded far too many chances for our liking against Crewe.” Chesterfield sit top of Sky Bet League 2 after a blistering start to the new season, although Paul Cook’s side lost their last two league games before knocking Mansfield out of the JPT. One of those defeats came at Morecambe last weekend, despite going three goals up at half-time, but Alexander is taking nothing for granted. “You’re not at the top of the table unless you’re a good team,” he said. “It would have been a blow to any team including ourselves if you’re three goals up and lose it in the end, but each game is different and Saturday is a completely different scenario. “Chesterfield started off exceptionally well and won a lot of games on the bounce. It opened up a little bit of a gap at the top but we’ve come back into the pack.” Alexander also anticipates another exciting atmosphere at Highbury for the match, after the Cod Army’s noisy backing in the midweek JPT match. “I think there will be a great atmosphere,” he said. “Chesterfield will bring their numbers and the Fleetwood fans will respond in kind and get behind us, and that’s what we’re looking forward to seeing. It engenders a great spirit around the whole club. “I thought the crowd really got behind the team on Tuesday, especially when the attendances normally slip at Johnstone’s Paint Trophy matches.” And with young goalkeeper Josh Ollerenshaw joining the Fleetwood ranks, Alexander is looking forward to working with the 23-year-old this season. He added: “Josh is a player we were alerted to by our scouting system. He impressed us in training with his goalkeeping skills and his attitude, which is important. He has a lot of potential and he will get great coaching from David Lucas. We look forward to working with him.” 27

THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF RACING Horses Update Lokis Strike/Eva Clare
I
ts been a long road but were glad to say that both horses have been injury free over the last month now and are both nearing 100% full fitness. They have been doing steady canters up the moor and trainer Karl Burke was pleased that both horses moved well and freely with no stiffness or ill effects afterwards. The vet came in and gave them a final scan at the start of the month and nothing un towards showed up on them and both were given a clean bill of health. This now means that both have been given the green light to step up their training programmes and extra work can now be carried out to get them race fit. As Loki is a year older than Eva he will probably come to hand more quickly as Karl and the team will be able to get stuck into him more. We are hoping that he should be back on track from the first week in November. He’s a big strong powerful looking horse who has really filled out whilst he’s been off. We spoke with the work riders who have been on him and they said he’s been pulling their arms out as he’s been going and certainly is very keen to get back at it. He was a bit babyish as a 2yo but if the penny has now dropped and he’s grown
up mentally as well as he has physically he could be a serious horse to go to war with this winter. There are plenty of positives about Eva Clare as well who is now looking like the finished article. We watched her working up the High Moor and she is so relaxed and travels really well. Because of her size and she has got a big frame, I doubt very much she would of raced by now even if she hadn’t picked up an injury. It was probably a blessing in disguise that she had it now. We’re hoping to see her out this month but whatever she does one thing is for sure she’s a gorgeous filly with a bright future ahead of her and she should make a cracking 3yo. FY7 Community Beat Hello - It’s almost that time of year again when traditionally there’s a rise in incidents of anti-social behaviour (ASB) and much of that rise is related to youths using Bonfire Night and Halloween as an excuse to cause misery for others. For some of the more vulnerable members of our community, it’s the time of year they dread and we’ll be doing all we can to stop them becoming victims of ASB or crime. You may agree that this past year or two has seen a reduction in relation to the irresponsible use of fireworks etc which is mainly down to the tightening up of legislation relating to the sale of fireworks. As your community policing team, we will, as far as possible ensure we utilise our powers, make the necessary checks on premises used for selling fireworks and crack down on those using them irresponsibly. Just because there has been an improvement doesn’t mean our work is done – it isn’t - we aim to be out there visibly patrolling our problem areas and making these areas a better place to live. We need your help to tackle this sort of ASB and we want you to ‘look out’ for your elderly neighbours – are they being targeted, would they appreciate a group of youths calling at their house in the dark with a Halloween mask on, are they being intimidated??? If you’re not sure then call us. Last month saw our Mounted Division patrolling the town centre. This proved popular and was welcomed by locals and colleagues alike. It did come as a bit of a shock to a town centre shop keeper though when a horse turned up at their front door when they reported a shoplifting – fortunately an officer was sat on the back of it to take the details!! Shoplifting continues to be an area of concern. Whilst progress is being made with detecting and prosecuting offenders, we continue to work with local business owners and managers to deter the offenders in the first place.
Our ‘Fleetwood Area Police’ facebook page is going from strength to strength and we regularly receive positive feedback. Please visit us and ‘like’ us – you will be kept in the loop with what’s going on, news alerts, witness appeals and more. We’re now live on twitter too, follow us at Fleetwood Police and be kept up to date. Social Media isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but it’s the best way of getting to find out what’s happening there and then – I wasn’t exactly over the moon when my Inspector ‘asked’ me to sort it, but now having seen the successes first hand I’m well and truly on board with it at work. I remain grateful to The Link for continuing to print this monthly article. Don’t forget we’re always on the lookout for recruiting into the Special Constabulary – could you do it? You would receive all the training to allow you to patrol your community and help keep it safe, you’ll wear exactly the same uniform as a regular officer and have the same powers.
