September Magazine Deadline 12th August 2014

It’s Official! The Summer Break is here (for some) - and one of the biggest events of the holidays is Lytham LIVE on August 22nd and 23rd. Featured acts are Britain’s Got Talent winners Collabro, with Lucy Kay, Jai McDowall, Matt Cardle, Janet Devlin and many others - see inside how to get tickets. LINK-MAG designed the logo for Lytham LIVE, and will be creating a programme and selling advertising/sponsorship for this event - so get in touch if you want to be involved. We’ve several pages of local events inside if you are looking for something to do. We list local events for FREE, so to tell us about yours just drop us an email to events@link-mag.co.uk. This is our biggest ever August issue. Why? Because we offer a service that encourages people to come back again and again - and we deliver results. Well done to last month’s winner: Jean Burgess for the Where Am I? Competition. £50 is on its way. Have a great August, and see you next month!

Enjoy the read and see you next month!

This is a four mile guided walk across the Fleetwood sands at low water. The walk is on fairly flat sand but there is a little wading through gullies so old trainers are ideal. We do not recommend walking bare footed. The walk is organised and escorted by the Fleetwood Lifeboat crew with the help of Her Majesty’s Coastguard, Fleetwood Nautical College and Morecambe Lifeboat. We will be assembling on the beach at the Marine Hall Fleetwood from 15-00 hrs. Checkin will open shortly after and the walk will start following a short safety briefing approx 15-30 hrs The walk is free - and you need to just turn up on the day - but may we please suggest that, as it is in aid of the RNLI, any donations / purchases from the Lifeboat Shop stall could be considered and will be gratefully received. Children supervised by adults and dogs on leads are welcome. We expect to be back by before 18-30 hrs.

Why not really help the RNLI and get a few sponsors for your efforts - sponsor forms are available from our website, Check-in on the day can be speeded up by printing and filling in the registration form and handing it in to the marshals at the check-in desk.

Fleetwood News Rememberance Day at The Memorial Park last year. Photo Alan Turner

Community reflections and hopes to commemorate First World War

4th August marks one hundred years since Britain declared war on Germany and to mark the centenary, Wyre Council wants people to declare their reflections on war and hopes for the future in a special project. 100 Years: 100 Hopes is part of the restoration of Fleetwood’s Memorial Park and aims to honour the contribution and sacrifices of all those involved in the war, celebrate all that is good and compassionate about the present and share future hopes. The council is working with schools and community groups to create declarations of remembrance and peace in a variety of ways including poetry, song and prayer, and aims to collect at least 100 before the anniversary. Residents across Wyre are also encouraged to share their thoughts online at wyre.gov. uk/100hopes Children from Cardinal Allen Catholic High School and Birla High School in Kolkata, India were among the first to declare their reflections and hopes, during a recent visit to Memorial Park. Watch what they had to say and make your own declaration at wyre.gov.uk/100hopes On 4th August, a special event will be held at The Memorial Park, Fleetwood for local families and residents between noon and 4pm. There will be opportunities for live declarations from anyone who wishes to reflect on the past or express hope and peace for the future, and to create a piece of art with a written message. The afternoon will also be fun packed with theatre and music shows, to celebrate the present and enjoy the park as an important community space. 22

All are welcome to attend. The council is also supporting the UK-wide Lights Out campaign to mark the moment war was declared. At that time British Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey famously remarked: “The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our life-time.” Everyone across the UK is invited to turn off their lights from 10pm to 11pm on 4th August, leaving on a single light or candle for a shared moment of reflection. Tealights will be given to local residents at the Memorial Park Fun Day on Saturday 26th July and 100 Years: 100 Hopes on Monday 4th August, for their own personal reflections that evening. Wyre Council has been awarded £2.4m from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery Fund to carry out a comprehensive restoration of the Grade II listed park and create a five year programme of community activities. The Memorial Park is unique in that the entire grounds were created in commemoration of the First World War, unlike most conventional architectural memorials, and it is one of only a few listed war memorial parks and gardens in the country. Ha Ha Hood gallops into Marine Hall

The Ha Ha! Team are back with the funniest farce in the forest as Ha Ha Hood! comes to Marine Hall, Fleetwood this autumn starring Su Pollard and Cannon and Ball.

Ten years after a messy divorce Robin and Marian are forced back together to fight the Sheriff once more. Little John and Friar Tuck, now considerably older and rougher around the edges, join the merry pair to try and save the citizens of Nottingham. Comedy queen Su Pollard and comedy duo Cannon and Ball team up for an all-out outrageous side splitting romp. ‘Ha Ha Hood! and the Prince of Leaves’ is the latest laugh-out-loud production from the Ha Ha! team who had us rolling in the aisles with Ha Ha Holmes!, Ha Ha Hitler! and Ha Ha Hamlet!. Created by Ben Langley, who also takes on the mantle of Robin, The production gallops into action at Marine Hall as part of a national theatre tour on Thursday 16 October. Maid Marian, Nottinghamshire’s feistiest female, who has in the past been brought to life by the likes of screen goddesses Audrey Hepburn, Cate Blanchett and Uma Thurman will now portrayed by Su Pollard, who serves up a world-weary Marian who is definitely more matron than maid! Tommy Cannon takes on the evil Sheriff of Nottingham and Little John while Bobby Ball, currently starring in TV’s Not Going Out with Lee Mack, doubles up as Friar Tuck and Guy of Gisborne. Su Pollard is a comedy icon who needs no introduction. The Nottingham-born lass makes for a perfect menopausal Marian, cutting her comedy chops on hit BBC sitcom Hi-de-Hi as scatty chalet maid Peggy. Su cemented her camp credentials with comedies ‘You Rang, M’lord’ and ‘Oh, Doctor Beeching’ and is a musical theatre and pantomime heroine!

26

Cannon and Ball’s starring role in ‘Ha Ha Hood! Prince of Leaves’ marks forty years since their first television appearance and a whopping fifty years together as a duo. The Cannon and Ball Show ran for 9 hugely successful years and the pair have two sitcoms and numerous theatre and pantomime appearances under their belts, not forgetting their hilarious stint on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here. Ben Langley has worked in London’s Covent Garden as a street performer for the last 18 years, winning The Bristol Harbour Festival Street Performer of the Year award. He is co-founder of the ‘Ha Ha Boys’ comedy team, writing and touring the Ha Ha series of theatre shows since 2007. He comments, ‘For me, what I saw in Ha Ha! was a British version of The Reduced Shakespeare Company which, rather than taking the mickey out of us, was embracing us and very pro-British. It is a tribute to all of the great comedy artists and routines that have made Britain funny over the last 50 to 100 years.’ ‘Ha Ha Hood’ is coming to Marine Hall on Thursday 16 October at 7.30pm. Tickets are £16 each, to book call the box office on 01253 887693 or visit www.marinehall. co.uk

FLEETWOOD TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB Development Squad Announced

Fleetwood Town are delighted to announce that there will be a development squad set up in place for the 2014/15 season. The group will be coached by former Fleetwood Town favourite Barry Nicholson, who makes a return to the Cod Army following a year back in his native Scotland at Kilmarnock. Nicholson so far has seven players under his wing, including Fleetwood born Richard Wright, who has signed a new contract with the Club Also to pen new deals at Highbury are Keano Deacon, Nick Haughton and Max Cartwright, with the trio having impressed the management team with their performances in the youth team or on loan last season. Coming through the entrance door to join the development squad are Tyler Forbes, Joe Taylor and Josh Green. ‘I am delighted to be back at the Club and the manager has given me a great opportunity to take the development squad,” admitted Nicholson. It was a big decision to hang up my boots but as soon as I spoke to the manager and he gave me the plans for the development squad, it was a no brainer for me to go back. The development squad will be in-between the first and youth teams. It is brand new; we have six outfield players signed already and a goalkeeper. We are looking to bring in a few more new faces throughout pre-season and it is a good opportunity for all the lads involved. It is a stepping stone between the youth team and the first team.’ 28

Final Pre-season match

Fleetwood will conclude their pre-season programme on Saturday 2nd August against Partick Thistle at Highbury, 3pm kick-off, this follows their recent bouts of pre-season games in Austria.

Morris signs on loan for Fleetwood Town

Fleetwood Town have re-signed Blackburn Rovers winger Josh Morris on loan until the 3rd January. The 22-year-old played a key role in helping the Club win promotion to League One and started all three Play-Off games including the 1-0 win over Burton Albion in the final. The Preston born midfielder featured 14 times in all for the Cod Army in 2013/14 and scored his first ever professional goal during his time on the Fylde Coast, the winner at Cheltenham Town on Good Friday. Josh has been given permission by his parent club Blackburn Rovers to play for Fleetwood in the Capital One Cup and Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. He linked up with his team mates on Wednesday afternoon and was part of the squad that traveled to Colwyn Bay for the preseason friendly.

THE MOUNT RACING CLUB UPDATE

THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF RACING Fidelma Moon

Eva Clare

ad a very upbeat report from Karl and the team regards Fidelma and its safe to say she’s impressing everyone at home. Kelly Burke rode her in a piece of work where she worked upside 2 older horses over 7f on the grass gallops and Kelly said she was surprised how well she went. She said even though she was a little bit green at first she showed a great attitude and the further they went the better she got. Its fair to say everyone was more than pleased with the manner of her work and the way she is progressing. The plan now is to step her up in her work without rushing her too much but we can definitely say she is on the right track and is exactly where Karl wants her to be. She certainly is starting to fill out a lot now and Kelly said she is tightening up a lot and is looking quite smart. She is a big filly with plenty of scope and a good engine on her (something you would hope for being by Dylan Thomas) and we would probably look to start her off over the 7f races but do think she will come into her own once she’s stepped up to a mile plus. We are hoping she can make her debut on the racecourse some time in August. Like we have said all along though she is not a filly who will be rushed just for the sake of it and is definitely a horse we are involved with with a long term plan in mind. The good news is that with Karl and the team she is certainly in the right hands and we have every confidence she is going to be a filly with a nice future in front of her.

lad to say she is now back in work after having 6 weeks out to grass and the general feeling from Karl and the team is that her little ‘summer break’ has done her the world of good and she was certainly ready for it. She is a lot fresher now and seems a lot happier in herself and after a week or so on the walker she will resume her training . Eva is not a horse who takes a lot of getting ready so she should be ready for running in probably about 3 to 4 weeks time and like Fidelma we are hoping to see her back on a racecourse some time in August. She will have an Autumn campaign where she will run on the Turf up until the end of October and then go straight onto the All Weather which will run throughout the Winter. There had been talk of stepping her up to 6f but Karl thinks she still has enough speed for 5f and providing there’s cut in the ground she should be fine over both. Whatever the trip it will be good to see Eva back on the course and no doubt she can resume her winning ways in the not too distant future.

FY7 Community Beat Hello We’ve had some positive court results these past few weeks in relation to ASBOs being granted by the court. This isn’t a route taken lightly by us; there are lots of interventions with other agencies put in place to support the perpetrators and their families before this. When it is necessary however, we will take action. With strict prohibitions and clear boundaries we continue targeting them until they stop offending. It’s likely you’ve seen this advertised in the local press or on our facebook page and the feedback has been very positive. Such a small group of youths have been responsible for creating havoc across the town, we’re confident these extra powers will enable us to deal as robustly as possible to finally bring some peace to local residents. We’ve also presented a case at court in relation to a Closure Order on Ariel Way. Again, not a decision taken lightly but when all other avenues fail, we must act. Cases like this are never resolved overnight due to the legal process needing to be followed; and we understand the upset this causes day in day out and any delay is frustrating. With the support of all the victims we’ve been able to ensure the problem residents have been moved on. Many will say that this approach is simply moving the problem and I would agree. But when all other approaches have been made and there remains a significant issue, it’s only right that affected residents have some much needed relief from them. The family continue to be monitored as to where they go from here, with information shared with potential social landlords and also ensuring support is offered to prevent a reoccurrence. It’s also a big reality check for them, now effectively homeless, a break from their daily routine is a much needed wake up call for them to behave like responsible residents!

It continues to be a problem in relation to burglaries of some elderly victims. Some local youths are charged with these offences and on bail pending court appearances. It’s vital that if you have any elderly or otherwise vulnerable relatives or neighbours that you look out for them. Ensure they are locking their doors, windows etc. They may be approached by youths to ask about completing gardening work for them, if they are legitimate then they will be happy for you to make checks on them, but remember, whilst they engage you in conversation you need to be minded that your property is secure and no one can sneak in. It takes a matter of seconds for them to steal from you. Be alert, Be secure!! Got an elderly relative that you struggle to get the message through to? Let us help, call us on 01253 604911 to leave a message or emails us at Fleetwood.NPT@ lancashire.pnn.police.uk and we’ll be happy to call round and offer some additional guidance. The main PACT (Police and Communities Together) surgery will be at ASDA on Saturday 16th August between 1pm & 3pm. You may want to call us on 01253 604911 or email Fleetwood.NPT@lancashire.pnn.police.uk; we will always come out and see you by appointment for a neighbourhood policing need if you prefer at your home address. Call 101 for any non-emergency issues. Visit the Lancashire Constabulary website for further ways of contacting us including registering for ‘In The Know’ – a free text messaging Take Care, Sergeant Daniel Whitaker

Fleetwood News Artist’s impression of the completed sea defences at Rossall. Photo Balfour Beatty/Wyre Council

Good financial news as Wyre approves accounts Wyre Council is proving that you can balance the books in these austere times. Members of the Audit Committee, at their meeting 24 June, were asked to approve council’s accounts for the year ended 31 March 2014. And in amongst the 110 pages for consideration by the committee there are some really good news stories. There have been savings against budgets or additional income totalling £652,000 which will be used to meet on-going maintenance requirements. The council has lots of assets including operational buildings, leisure centres, Fleetwood Market, the foreshore/promenade, playground equipment, seats, shelters, paths and car parks, all of which are costly to maintain and it has been recognised that some of them are looking a bit worse for wear and in need of a bit of TLC. Real term savings in employee costs since 2005/06 total £3.6m - a 30% reduction – and staff mileage expenses have reduced by 60% over six years. For the first time ever, the cemeteries service has broken even, generating a small surplus of £7,000. Not too long ago this service cost the council tax payers in excess of £86,000. The Marine Hall has managed to reduce its operating costs by an incredible 58% since 2007/08 with the venue costing the taxpayer only £200,000 to run in 2013/14 - a big thank you to all those who have supported us in achieving this by attending a huge variety of events and concerts. The cost of insurance has reduced by 37% over a six year period due to a robust approach to managing claims and improved intelligence on fraudulent activities. While the council maintains what looks like a healthy level of money in the bank, the latest

financial projections show this money is needed in future years as significant reductions in government funding kick in. The Senior Leadership Team, which has managed to find savings of £786,000 to date, has been asked to find even more to help bridge the gap between income and expenditure. Earmarked reserves also look healthy, but much of this money is already committed to schemes, with examples including the leisure centre improvement works currently under way, Shaping Your Neighbourhood grant funding now in its second year, replacement of council vehicles or simply meeting the cost of the council tax freeze – the money the council receives from tax payers has been frozen at the rate set in 2010/11. Sea defences saw investment of £1.3m as the massive £63.2m Rossall Sea Wall improvement scheme got under way. The next biggest item was disabled facilities grants with just under half of the money going to residents in Fleetwood and a quarter to those living in Thornton and Cleveleys. Encouragingly, almost 70% of the capital investment in 2013/14 was met by grants and contributions meaning that the impact on our taxpayers is minimised. Cllr Balmain, Chairman of the Audit Committee, said ‘Being a Scotsman I have a reputation for being careful with money, but when we’re talking about hard earned money paid by our residents then it is even more important than ever to make sure that we spend it carefully and wisely. I wish to place on record my thanks to all those who have helped secure our financial position including members and officers. We often say at Wyre that we run a tight ship and these accounts prove it.’
