Rotary Club at the Pocket Park by Malcolm Lewis, Press officer of Fleetwood Rotary Club

F

leetwood Rotary Club were out to support our local primary schools at the end of June at the ‘Pocket Park’ opposite Fleetwood Library. The park, inaugurated in 1998, was planted with new bulbs and generally made tidy in preparation for ‘Fleetwood in Bloom’. The children from local primary schools are linked to ‘Rotakids’. Rotakids which is supported by the local Rotary Club is an exciting way for children aged between 7 and 11 years old to lead and engage in important and lively activities that will make a positive difference in their school, their local community and globally. Roatarian Margaret Lund said: ‘Each school has a club which provides an opportunity to be involved in citizenship locally and overseas’. Rotary and each school have a planter on site in the Pocket Park and the children and their teachers were busily engaged in planting. Children from St Mary’s, Charles Saer, Larkholme, Chaucer and Shakespeare schools were able to participate on the day.

Particular thanks needs to be given to Wyre Borough Council for the blooms, their support in preparing the planters, and in the continual maintenance of the area. A big thank you to all the schools and pupils involved.

Information call for ICI war memorial Family members of former ICI workers who lost their lives at war are being sought

W

yre Council has joined forces with community groups and local historians to restore the ICI war memorial in Thornton and would like to hear from family members who may have a relative named on it. Situated at Four Lane Ends, the ICI memorial is separate from the main cenotaph and displays the names of former workers who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars. It was originally located at the firm’s site at Hillhouse Business Park before being moved to Four Lane Ends in 1997. Earlier this year, the council agreed to take over ownership of the memorial from AkzoNobel (who acquired ICI in 2008) and to restore it during the Centenary of the First World War. Now family members of those named on the memorial are being asked to help. Spokesman for the project David Baxter, said: ‘The memorial has been weathered over the years and the names have been eroded, so we are working together to ensure that the correct names are inscribed on the restored memorial. With the help of a local historian we have a list of the names that were originally on the memorial but research has suggested that there may be some inaccuracies. We would like any family members of those men who gave their lives during the First and Second World Wars and were originally on the memorial to come forward if they have evidence that there are inaccuracies to those names.’

The restoration team is particularly interested in talking to relatives of the following First World War servicemen: Jack Brennan or (Brannen), William Brockband or (Brockbank), John Crehan or (Crahan), Edward Keogh or (Kehoe), George Urmston or (Urmson) The team is working towards having the memorial fully restored in time for Remembrance Sunday in November and plans to hold a rededication ceremony involving community members, schools, family members and veterans. All family members are welcome to become involved in the project. For further information please contact Paul Deacon at Wyre Council on 01253 887236 or email paul.deacon@wyre.gov.uk

Summer Cooking

Beautiful Berries This wonderfully substantial warm salad has a sweet and sharp BerryJewel raspberry dressing that brings it to life. Although it takes a long time to get the lamb meltingly tender it is almost entirely hands off - a great dish to get started in the oven before you go for a weekend walk. Serves 6-8 What you will need For the lamb 1 tbsp olive oil 4 large cloves garlic, crushed 1 tbsp cumin seeds, roughly ground tsp dried thyme 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp smoked paprika salt & freshly ground black pepper 2kg bone-in lamb shoulder 2 x 400g tins chickpeas, drained & rinsed to serve 235g salad spinach, washed & well drained 225g punnet BerryJewel raspberries 150g pecans For the dressing 225g punnet BerryJewel raspberries 100ml water 3 tbsp balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp runny honey Salt & freshly ground black pepper, to taste Method In a small bowl, mix together the olive oil with the garlic, cumin, thyme, cinnamon and smoked paprika and season generously with salt and freshly

ground black pepper. Using a sharp knife, pierce 1 centimeter deep holes all over the lamb - this will help the spice flavour to get deep inside the meat. Rub the marinade all over the lamb, pushing inside the holes you have made. Place the lamb in a large baking tray, cover with cling film and set aside to marinate at room temperature for 2 hours, or overnight in the fridge. Preheat the oven to 150ºC/130ºC fan/gas 2. Remove and discard the cling film and pour 200ml cold water into the roasting tin. Cover tightly with foil and cook in the oven for 5 hours it won’t need checking or turning so it’s fine to leave it undisturbed. After the lamb has had its 5 hours

cooking, remove from the oven and discard the foil. Increase the oven temperature to 180ºC/160ºC fan/gas 4. Using a large metal spoon, spoon off and discard as much fat as possible providing you don’t stir the sauce it will be floating on top. Stir the chickpeas through the remaining juices, and return to the oven, uncovered, for a further hour. Whilst the lamb is in the oven for the final hour, make the dressing by placing all the ingredients into a small saucepan. Set over a medium high heat and bring up to the boil. Boil steadily for about 5 minutes until the BerryJewel raspberries have broken right down and you are left with a shiny, deep coloured sauce. Taste to check the seasoning, adding salt and pepper as desired and a little more honey if it is too sharp. Strain through a sieve to remove the pips and set aside to cool. Toast the pecans in a dry frying pan until they are deep golden brown and smell lovely and nutty. Tip onto a board and roughly chop. Set aside. After the final hour in the oven, take the lamb out and transfer to a large plate or board. Using 2 forks, flake the meat into bite sized pieces. To serve, divide the spinach leaves between individual plates and scatter over the BerryJewel raspberries and pecans. Spoon the shredded lamb and some chickpeas over the top and drizzle on a little dressing. Serve the rest of the dressing alongside in a small jug.

Persian Jeweled Rice with BerryJewel Raspberries, Walnuts and Parsley Serves 6 as a side dish Based on the classic Persian dish, Javaher Polow, this fruity rice is truly fit for a king. It makes a great side dish for a spicy stew or a succulent roast chicken. The buttery golden crust that develops on the bottom of the pan is absolutely delicious. For the rice 300g basmati rice A generous pinch saffron threads 150g dried cranberries 2 tbsp olive oil 60g unsalted butter 1 large onion, finely chopped 1 cinnamon stick 1 tsp cardamon pods, bruised with the flat of a knife 1 tsp cumin seeds Salt & freshly ground black pepper To serve 100g walnuts, roughly chopped 225g punnet BerryJewel raspberries A generous bunch of parsley, chopped Finely grated zest from 1 orange 1 garlic clove, very finely chopped Method Put the rice in a sieve and rinse under cold running water. Tip into a bowl and cover well with cold water. Set aside to soak for 1 hour. Add the saffron to a small heatproof glass and cover with 2 tablespoons of boiling water, then set aside to soak. Add the cranberries to a small heatproof bowl and cover in boiling water, set aside to soak. Once the rice, saffron and cranberries are halfway through their soaking time, add the oil and half the butter to a deep, preferably nonstick, frying pan and set over a low heat. When the butter has melted, add the onion, cinnamon, cardamon and cumin and fry gently for 30 minutes until the onion is soft and lightly caramelised, then turn off the heat. Drain the rice

and put it in a large saucepan. Pour over boiling water so it comes a generous 3 centimeters above the rice and set over a medium high heat. Boil for 3 minutes, then drain and rinse under cold running water to cool and drain well. The rice will have started to cook but will still have plenty of bite and the grains will not be fluffy. Stir the cooled rice through the onions in the frying pan, along with the saffron and soaking water, and the cranberries and their soaking water. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper, stirring well, then dot the surface of the rice with the remaining butter. Using the handle of a wooden spoon, make 5-6 holes through the rice all the way to the bottom of the pan - this helps it to steam evenly. Tear off a sheet of baking paper, scrunch it up under running water, shaking off the excess, then lay snugly over the surface of the rice. Cover tightly with a layer of foil and set over a very low heat. Cook, undisturbed, for 40 minutes, after which time the rice will be cooked and fluffy and a delicious buttery crust will have developed on the bottom. Whilst the rice is cooking, toast the walnuts in a dry frying pan until golden and smelling nutty. Tip into a bowl and stir through the BerryJewel raspberries, parsley, orange zest and garlic. Set aside. Once the rice is ready, remove and discard the paper. Lightly fork through the walnut, BerryJewel raspberry and parsley mixture and pile the rice onto a warmed serving dish. Scrape the lovely crunchy caramelised rice bits from the base of the pan and sprinkle over the top. Serve immediately.

BerryJewel Raspberry Fool with Almond Toffee Shards and Whole Raspberries Serves 6 This is a classic raspberry fool with a bit of a twist. Shards of crisp almond toffee are a great crunchy contrast to the soft creaminess of fool.

For the almond toffee 375g caster sugar 75g golden syrup 35g butter 50ml cold water 75g blanched whole almonds, roughly chopped ½ tsp vanilla extract ½ tsp fine salt For the fool 2 x 225g punnets BerryJewel raspberries 300ml double cream 300g Greek yoghurt Method Start by making the toffee. Line a baking sheet with a non-stick silicone mat or piece of non-stick baking parchment. Set aside. Add the sugar, syrup, butter and water to a large saucepan (the toffee will bubble up and at least double in volume whilst cooking). Set over a low heat and stir constantly until the sugar has dissolved and the butter has melted. Turn the heat up to medium and bring up to the boil. Boil, uncovered, for 7-10 minutes until a little teaspoon of the mixture turns into a hard ball when dropped in a glass of cold water. Start testing after 7 minutes, and keep on boiling until it is ready - it may take a little less or longer, depending on the depth and width of the pan you choose. If you are using a sugar thermometer it will read 138ºC. Turn off the heat and quickly stir through the almonds, vanilla and salt then pour onto the prepared baking sheet. Set aside to go cold - about 30 minutes. Once hard, break into thin shards using a strong sharp knife. This makes about double what you need for this recipe, but it stores well in an airtight tin for at least a week. To make the fool, add one punnet of BerryJewel raspberries to a bowl and mash up with a fork. Pour the cream into a large mixing bowl and whisk, either by hand or with an electric whisk, until it forms soft billowy peaks. Gently fold the Greek yogurt through using a large metal spoon until well combined. Then pour in the mashed raspberries and lightly fold. Finally fold through half the punnet of whole BerryJewel raspberries and the toffee shards and pour into a serving dish. Decorate the top with the remaining whole raspberries and toffee shards. Serve immediately.

PARKINSONS DISEASE SUPPORT GROUP Our main aims are to give support to people with Parkinson’s Disease, their families and friends. We are a small independent group and meet on a weekly basis at our hall at the top of Bold Street, right next to the North Euston Hotel. Our meetings are run on a “drop in” basis every Wednesday between 10.a.m. and 3.00 p.m. Tea, coffee and biscuits are served in a very informal, comfortable atmosphere. We also have a session with exercises especially chosen for Parkinson sufferers but helpers and volunteers can join in too. These exercises will not halt the progression of the disease but they do promote a feeling of well being and are mentally stimulating ( as well as being a good laugh in the process!!) The exercise session is at 12.noon. So if you are affected by Parkinson’s Disease in any way whatsoever, why not give us try, you never know, we might be just that extra tonic you need. Also if you feel like volunteering to help out in any way, pop in on any Wednesday and see what you think. We do hold other regular events, initially they were for fund raising but they are becoming more for the social side now. FY7 Community Beat Hello

harm, then dial 999

I’m writing this a week before Tram Sunday – I’m going to hazard a guess and say it was very busy, with scorching weather all day and absolutely no incidents or crimes committed. Brilliant – let’s hope that’s the case and pass our thanks across to the professional organising committee who put this event on for the town and all its visitors.

The Fleetwood PACT event takes place at the ASDA store on Dock Street on the third Saturday of each month between 1pm and 3pm. Thornton Cleveleys event takes place on the last Saturday of every month, at Thornton Precinct Co-op between 5pm and 6pm. We’re usually joined by a local Councillor too so between us we should be able to assist or refer your information to the right person.

A reminder not to write down your PIN and store it with your bank cards in your purses and wallets. There have been a number of thefts these past few weeks which has resulted in the PIN then being used to steal large amounts of money from the bank accounts. Obviously this is distressing enough having to replace the contents of your wallet/purse never mind being several hundred pounds lighter. The likelihood of the banks reimbursing this is slim. Remember, if your allocated PIN is difficult to remember, change it asap at a local ATM!! For those who may have elderly relatives who use a bank card, please make sure you discuss this with them and help them understand the consequences. And a final gentle reminder – warm weather means open windows!! Close them when rooms are unattended or use security catches preventing them being opened further allowing someone to climb through. Be extra vigilant and look out for your neighbours. Report any suspicious circumstances without delay to us on 101 or if you suspect a crime in progress or someone at risk of

For those on t’internet, take a look at our Lancashire Police website – ‘Do It Online’ allows you to report incidents and crimes online direct through to us. You can complain and compliment and most importantly, it eases the process and frustrations sometimes encountered by making it easy to email directly to an officer. From this website you could choose to join the thousands of other people already signed up to our new ‘In The know’ text messaging service. This allows you to tailor what information we send through to you, whether it is crime prevention, news alerts, and crime pattern information or witness appeals. You’ll also find we will use it to advertise job vacancies. All this is in addition to the Fleetwood Area Police and Thornton Cleveleys Area Police facebook pages.

THE MOUNT RACING CLUB UPDATE

THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF RACING Fidelma Moon

W

ent to Ripon and had no luck in running what so ever in what turned out to be a very frustrating day for all. Racing over 1m2f she was quickly away from the gates but refused to settle and Jockey Joey Haynes had a right job on his hands containing her for the first 5f as she pulled and fought for her head before eventually settling. As they turned for home she seemed to be travelling the strongest but found herself caught in a pocket tight up on the rail with nowhere to go. Joey had to sit and wait in vain for a gap that unfortunately never came and finished in 8th. After this run we were very keen to get Fidelma out again quickly and we headed off to Doncaster for a similar race over 1m2f again. Due to some ‘curious’ watering of the course followed by a further 20mm of rain that fell, the ground came up Soft as the off time approached. This proved not to be a problem for Fidelma though however just like her previous race she refused to settle and for the first 5f she pulled quite hard. Eventually she did settle and from 3f out she looked to be travelling strongly and at that point you couldn’t have seen her not being involved at the finish. But those early race exertions had taken there toll again and she weakened in the final furlong finishing 6th. After the race we spoke with the jockey Joey Haynes and he said her refusal to settle was costing her in these races and he suggested we try a different approach. His thoughts were to try dropping her back in trip to 7f or a mile and letting her go and dictate her own pace similar to when she won previous and this is something we will now try.

Summer Storm

C

ertainly proving to be a popular horse after a great turnout of Owners greeted him on a recent stable visit to Rebecca Menzies. On what turned out to be a very enjoyable day we all saw Summer Storm being put through his paces by Jockey Tony Kelly who first did a 2 mile trot on him then followed it up with an impressive 1 mile canter. This is his daily routine now and he certainly has tightened and strengthened up a lot since we last saw him. Becky is really pleased with him and says he is actually ahead of where she thought he would be and if he carries on like this he should be out running towards the backend of August.

There are plenty of share packages available in our horses and if anyone would like to know more or maybe visit them in their stables either at ‘Karl Burkes Spigot Lodge’ or ‘Rebecca Menzies’ you can do so by contacting Geoff 07852 153969 or Andy 07940 202312 or by visiting our website www.themountracingclub.co.uk Advertise your business call 0800 970 7687 or email info@link-mag.co.uk

Money Matters

How to haggle for the best deals By Martin Lewis Haggling isn’t just a skill for market stalls, these days where it really pays is at call centres. And if you’re a Sky customer there’s no better time to put your haggling skills to the test, as some Sky TV customers are facing hikes of over £50 a year. Yet this isn’t just for Sky. It works for other TV firms, mobile, TV, broadband, breakdown and more. Last year on my site, I polled over 7,000 people who tried to call-centre haggle, to see how successful they were company by company. The results are staggering, at Sky 86% succeeded in some form of discount, the AA 84%, TalkTalk 83%, Plusnet 82%, Virgin media 80% and RAC 78%. In other words, for every five people who tried, four got a deal. And don’t think the amounts are trivial either, here’s just some of the successes people have tweeted me in Sky’s current round of price hikes… “Just saved £315 a year with a good old haggle with Sky, cheers Martin.” “Phoned up and in 10 mins it’d knocked £134 off my bill. No change to services or terms. Thank you!” “Managed to save almost 50% by calling. Firm but polite with a clear message throughout my call.” 40

So don’t be shy, it’s time to tool up and get a haggle on. Here are my top ten tips (but for you, I’ll do it in 9)...

1. Benchmark the best deal.

It’s important to have the factual arsenal. Research the deals, discounts and codes that are available for new customers, as a basis for negotiation. Here’s a quick rundown for each of the main haggle areas. Digital TV: For example, you can currently get 25% off all Sky TV bundles and £75 bill credit, compare this with what you will be paying. You can use this figure to haggle with Sky or Virgin. See www.mse.me/digitalTV for all the deals. And of course the cheapest digital TV option is Freeview. It’s a one-off cost of around £20 for a box and there’s no monthly subscription. Breakdown cover: If you go via a cashback site, you can effectively sign up for basic AA or RAC cover for under £20. See www.mse.me/ breakdown for full best-buys. Broadband: Here the best deals are all promo offers. A common level is line rent and broadband for £16 a month, plus a £100 high street voucher. Full best-buys in www.mse.me/broadband.

2. Timing is crucial.

Haggling works best when you’re near or beyond the end of your contract as then they have a real risk you’ll leave. There’s no harm in giving it a try when you’re not, if you struggle then diarise when you’re nearing the end (you can give Sky notice of leaving 31 days before the end of your contract) and call back then.

Business & Finance 3. The haggling Holy Grail is the customer retention department.

If you’re coming to the end of your contract, or are out of it, then you’re wielding a powerhouse weapon: customer loyalty. If they don’t offer the deal you want, tell them you’re going to leave. This means you get put through to what they externally call “disconnections”, but internally is called “customer retentions”. There the staff ’s job is to keep you, and they have massively more discretion to offer you deals to do so.

4. Use charm, chutzpah, cheek and a smile.

Aggression or anger will just put their back up. You’re asking for a discount, and they’re just as much within their right not to give it as you are to leave.

Aim for polite, firm and non-combative.

5. Use the phrases that pay. You may find that the customer service rep will only offer a small discount at first, but if you don’t agree with the price use phrases like:

n I’ve worked out my monthly budget, and my absolute max is £[insert price here]/month n [TalkTalk/Virgin/BT] can do it for less... n I need to think about it... n I think my husband / wife will go bonkers if I pay that... n It’s still a lot of money... n What’s the very best you can do?

6. Don’t panic if it calls your bluff and says it’ll disconnect you.

Some people worry and get nervous to try this in case they’re disconnected. My easy ‘get out of jail free’ card on this is the phrase: “Hold on, I’ll call you back on that. I’d like to check with my wife/ husband/dog/Aunt Fanny first.”

7. Ask if it can throw in extras.

If it won’t slash the price, see if it can include any extras, like free calls or extra channels, bigger download limits, or one level higher breakdown cover

If they don’t offer the deal you want, tell them you’re going to leave. This means you get put through to what they externally call “disconnections”, but internally is called “customer retentions”

8. If you fail? Try, try and try again.

I’ve heard rumours that different staff members have quotas of how many deals they can do. Even if not true, it feels like that to many. You may have called the wrong person at the wrong time. So call back a few days later and speak to someone else. This works for many people.

9. Vote with your feet.

If you don’t get what you want and other firms offer the same for less, then you should seriously consider leaving and go grab one of those deals.
