PUT EYE TESTS ON YOUR HOLIDAY CHECKLIST It is fair to say that for many children the lengthy summer holidays is the highlight of the school year! Who could blame them; it’s a carefree time to spend with loved ones, enjoying the great outdoors with the troubles of homework and exams pushed firmly to the back of their little heads. But for the parents the summer holidays means organising childcare and finding ways to keep their little ones entertained all whilst trying to fit in quality time and join in on the fun themselves. It is also an opportunity to catch up on other activities before the hectic back-to-school runaround takes over. So how about putting eye tests for the children on the ‘to do’ list too? The friendly team at Scrivens in Fleetwood recommends that children get their vision checked every two years, so what better time than the summer holidays to book a sight test. And the best news; eye tests for children are free of charge as are prescription glasses if required.
Many vision problems begin in childhood, but at this age they’re also much easier to correct. The first eight years of a child’s life are critical for eye and vision development, when particular problems can only by corrected if treatment starts at a young age. he tower at Rossall point has sophisticated technology and radar; unfortunately computers cannot spot incidents such as distress flares, fishermen in trouble, an adventurous child drifting out to sea on a rubber ring, or a yachtsman in trouble on an overturned boat.
A recent concern to all the safety organisations based around the Wyre estuary is the increased publicity which has highlighted the island that has grown in size and height, approximately 1.5 miles off the promenade at Rossall point, and requires walking across sands to get there. As the school summer holidays approach more families and children may attempt the crossing. This is fraught with danger as the tides can easily cut off the unsuspecting walkers. We would strongly recommend no crossing is attempted, but if it is we recommend the follows: 1. Check the tide times. 2. Contact the safety organisations prior to attempting. 3. Always carry a fully charged mobile phone, wear 24
light coloured clothing and have something to wave. The coast watch tower is open 7 days a week, in summer 10am - 6pm. Telephone 01253 870618. The tower is also manned by Wyre rangers. We welcome members of the public to visit us, but would recommend a phone call before visiting. As we are a voluntary organization we are totally dependent on donations. We provide the eyes and ears along the coast monitoring radio channels and providing and listening during poor visibility. We are trained to deal with emergencies offering a variety of skills and experience and full training by the NCI ensures high standards are met. We opened in 2008 and have some 40 members and we are actively seeking more members, both men and women. Have a good summer, keep safe, and remember national coast watch are the eyes along the coast.

Care & Support PARKINSONS DISEASE SUPPORT GROUP Our main aims are to give support to people with Parkinson’s Disease, their families and friends. We are a small independent group and meet on a weekly basis at our hall at the top of Bold Street, right next to the North Euston Hotel. Our meetings are run on a “drop in” basis every Wednesday between 10am and 3pm. Tea, coffee and biscuits are served in a very informal, comfortable atmosphere. We also have a session with exercises especially chosen for Parkinson sufferers but helpers and volunteers can join in too. These exercises will not halt the progression of the disease but they do promote a feeling of well being and are mentally stimulating (as well as being a good laugh!) The exercise session is at 12noon. So if you are affected by Parkinson’s Disease in any way whatsoever, why not give us try. Fleetwood Rotary Club and our local primary schools have been busy recently helping the Fleetwood Fielden Charity in re planting flowers in Fleetwood Pocket Park. Just off North Albert street opposite the library, the park contains Benches, planters, and a group of ceramic murals from the area schools. Pupils from Charles Saer, Shakespeare, and Larkholme schools were all busy helping with he planting. Katy Johnson a teacher at Shakespeare school said ‘ It gives children pride in their community and improves their environment, and links into their RotaKids involvement. RotaKids It is sponsored by a local Rotary Club in or near the town in which the school or group is located, and is an exciting way for those 12 and under to lead and engage in activities that will make a positive difference in their school, in their local community and globally. Ashleigh Cooper head girl at Larkholme school said ‘its something different, and you can have fun and learn how you plant the flowers’. Be certain to visit and sit a while when you are out and about in the town and enjoy this wonderful space.

A summer of family fun at Wyre’s theatres
Kicking off the summer is the hilarious adaptation of Goldilocks and the Three Bears at Thornton Little Theatre. Come along on Friday 5 August as Magic Light Productions tell the story of how Goldilocks and the three bears save the future of her Grandma Gertie’s circus. Meanwhile in another part of the town the Evil Ringmaster of a rival circus is planning on kidnapping the bears and making his circus the best in town. There is only one person who can save the day - Goldilocks! However she is not alone, she is accompanied on her adventure by Silly Billy and some of their puppet friends. Will they save Gertie’s circus and defeat the Evil Ringmaster? This new dazzling pantomime style show of this classic story is magically brought to life with amazing sets, stunning costumes, magic, illusion, special effects, song, dance, puppets and an abundance of laughter with a fabulous cast of characters. The show starts at 2pm and tickets are £8 each or £30 for a family of four. Next up on Tuesday 23 August is Marty MacDonald’s Toy Machine at Marine Hall, Fleetwood, featuring the voice of CBeebies’ Justin Fletcher and Nicole Davis as Pongo the Pig and Molly-Moo the Cow. Everyone
at Marty MacDonald’s Farm is delighted with the special delivery that’s arrived – the toy machine that makes all of the toys in the world! But then they realise that Crafty the Crow has been up to mischief and it shouldn’t really be there at all. Worse still, the machine has stopped working, so they need to fix it before the Toymaker comes to get it back. Join Marty, Sally the Scarecrow, Pongo the Pig, Molly-Moo the Cow and Sheena the Sheep in a fun, musical, interactive adventure to save the day, repair the toy machine and give the world back its toys. With a colourful farmyard and host of lovable puppet characters, Marty MacDonald’s Toy Machine is a brand new family show particularly suitable for 2 – 7 year olds, from the team who brought you last year’s sell-out hit show Marty MacDonald’s Farm. The show starts at 2pm and tickets are £9 each. As well as two great shows, this year for the first time ever, Marine Hall is looking for children to appear in their Christmas pantomime! Children aged between 7 and 16, boys and girls, who are all singing and dancing with lots of personality are invited to audition to join the chorus. The auditions will take place on Thursday 18 August at Marine Hall and the panto is on 8 – 11 December.
