to your Fleetwood Town Magazine. O come all ye faithful into the last edition of the year, Christmas is upon us once again! A special time to touch base and spend time with family and friends while enjoying the festive season. There are many events in the what’s on section once again to keep you busy over this period and into the New Year…. We’ve had a fantastic year helping 100’s of local businesses showcase themselves to our readers, as well as supporting as many local events and most of all helping charity events and causes raise £1000’s. LINK-MAG is more than just local directory and free community magazine, it’s an integral part of the local community. Myself and the team here at LINK-MAG would like to wish you a brilliant Christmas and New Year and a special thank you for supporting us over the last 5+years, we’re run by independent local people and give back to the community on many occasions personally. We take a break over Christmas so our next edition will be our combined JAN/FEB issue out from mid January with 12th Dec deadline for all events up to and including Feb 2015 available online as well. Well done to last month’s winner: David Heaney for the Where Am I? Competition. £50 is on its way. Once again have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year, see you in 2015!

Local Volunteer Community Health Champions sought A team of volunteer ‘Community Health Champions’ are being sought by NHS Fylde and Wyre Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).

Continuing from the success of the previous recruitment campaign we are now looking for a second intake of volunteer ‘Community Health Champions’ to work on projects with NHS Fylde and Wyre Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). The CHC’s will act as a direct link between local communities and the CCG, helping to shape future services and improve existing ones. These volunteer roles provide an opportunity for local people to gain new knowledge & skills, but more importantly make a real difference within their community. Community Health Champions have the opportunity to make a substantial impact on the future of health care in Fylde and Wyre. Through sharing their own feedback and the experiences of the wider community, the CHC’s have the opportunity to tell the CCG what is working well and what services need to be improved.

Anyone living in the Fylde and Wyre area can apply for one of these roles. People living outside of the area who have a direct link to services delivered in Fylde and Wyre may also be considered. An already existing interest in health services is not necessarily essential. To find out more about this volunteer role then contact Christine Carty on 07460 131188, 01253 344398 or email ccg@rpotential.co.uk

Parading through the town centre

Parade enters the park

Community parade commemorates First World War Centenary Thousands of people supported a community parade in Fleetwood today to commemorate the First World War Centenary and celebrate the restoration of Memorial Park. The Homecoming saw around 1,000 school children, community members and a variety of characters from the home front parade from Marine Hall Gardens, through the town to Memorial Park, with many more lining the route. People were dressed in the uniform and clothing of the time and shops and homes were decorated with murals, bunting and flags reflective of the many homecomings that occurred during the war.

participation in the event. She said: ‘All the schools in Fleetwood took part today because The Homecoming was a real community event that we all wanted to be part of. The children have learned so much about the history of the First World War - we’ve had workshops in the run up to the event with a soldier and a nurse who taught them about their roles. Both the educational element and the experience have been fantastic one offs.’

Councillor Terry Rogers, Wyre’s Armed Forces Champion, said: ‘The turn out today was absolutely fantastic and I’m proud that Wyre has paid tribute in this way. The community really came together and it was a great way to show off our wonderful park. I was delighted to see so many children taking part because the younger generation are the future custodians of remembrance and the park, so it’s vital that they understand the true meaning.’

Memorial Park continued the theme after the parade by hosting the 16th Lancers Cavalry Display Troop, mezzo-soprano Patricia Hammond, music wagon, feed stations, first aid post and other authentic features. The Homecoming is part of a programme of events to celebrate Memorial Park, which is currently undergoing a complete restoration thanks to a £2.4m grant from the Heritage Lottery and Big Lottery Funds.

Children from every school in Fleetwood took part and community groups including Fleetwood WI, Fleetwood Sea Cadets Old Boys Band, Fleetwood Museum and HM Coastguard Fleetwood plus Lt Col Beatson, Deputy Lieutenant of Lancashire and the Mayor of Wyre, Councillor Ron Shewan.

The Grade II listed park is unique in that the entire grounds were created in commemoration of the First World War, unlike most conventional architectural memorials, and it is one of only a few listed war memorial parks and gardens in the country.

Music Sounds Better With Huw Top Radio One DJ heads to Blackpool this December

This December the premier venue for new music in Blackpool will play host to the official authority in all things exciting and vibrant in the UK’s thriving new music scene, as top DJ Huw Stephens heads to The Blue Room to play a selection of amazing music, both new and old. Huw Stephens was born in Cardiff, Wales, the son of the author and literary journalist Meic Stephens. He joined Radio 1 at the age of 17 in 1999 as part of the station’s new regional output and became the youngest ever Radio 1 presenter. He curates the Introducing Stage, which showcases new unsigned and emerging music at the Reading and Leeds, Glastonbury, One Big Weekend and T in the Park festivals. This is a real boost for the recently reopened venue in Blackpool as it continues to give upcoming local acts a platform to perform and hone their skills locally before heading further

afield. Support will come from Blackpool band ‘The Colours’ who have been making a name for themselves across Lancashire with their (ahem) colourful and danceable indie sound. Huw Stephens: www.musicsoundsbetterwithhuw.com The Colours: www.facebook.com/thecoloursmusic The Blue Room: www.facebook.com/theblueroombpl Friday 5th December, The Blue Room, 139 Church Street, Blackpool, FY1 3NX. 9pm. Tickets £5.50 (Available through SEEtickets. com and Skiddle.com) E-Tickets + Pay On Door available.

Wyre wins technology innovation award Wyre Council has fought off international competition to win Technology Innovator of the Year in the KANA Customer Awards 2014 KANA provides customer service technology which is used by the council to manage contact from residents, recording all phone calls, emails, online forms and face-to-face visits and subsequent actions. A judging panel of industry experts was impressed with the council’s website, which allows residents to report issues such as fly tipping and dog fouling online and plot the location on a map. Officers are then able to pick these reports up on mobile devices in the field and respond immediately, and Wyre is one of only a handful of local authorities in the country that maps them all online, showing where incidents are already being dealt with. The council was also praised for increasing the use of online services, shifting customers from expensive face-to-face and telephone channels. Councillor Peter Gibson, Leader of Wyre Council, said: ‘This award demonstrates that we are continually striving to improve services for residents. There are now more ways than ever to contact Wyre and getting in touch via the 28

website is increasingly popular, as it is quick and easy to do. Although online contact is the most cost effective way to operate, development of the website is not at the expense of traditional channels - it just means residents have more choice.’ Wyre took the Technology Innovator of the Year title with Elkjop Nordic, the largest consumer electronics retailer in the Nordic countries, highly commended. The prize includes $2000 worth of training and Wyre’s story will be showcased as best practice. Other award winners include BSkyB, Oxford City Council and Vistaprint. Residents can report everything from missed bins to benefits cheats, pay council tax and comment on planning applications plus much more at wyre.gov.uk

Poulton and Wyre Railway Society work to restore railway line

Reopening a railway line is a difficult project, the main ingredient being rail and sleepers. Much of the line is usable however, they do need to replace a number of wooden sleepers and with this in mind the Society is launching its ‘Sponsor a sleeper to Fleetwood appeal’. They have a permanent way team in place and are now asking everyone to help by Sponsoring a sleeper. Four area’s require work, Thornton Station – 60, Hillylaid – 125, Burn Naze Loop – 25, Cala Gran – Jameson Rd – 150 The line beyond Jameson Rd Bridge requires completely rebuilding and will be the subject of a future appeal. This appeal will however ensure that the line reaches Fleetwood at the earliest opportunity and that there is a presence in the

town (albeit the outskirts) from day one. They need to replace all the rotting sleepers to get from where the photo on this page is taken to Poulton and Fleetwood. If you or your company have £20.00 to spare (cost of a sleeper) then get in touch with the Poulton and Wyre Railway Society. Your name or company name will be stamped onto the sleepers you buy.

We are a small independent group and meet on a weekly basis at our hall at the top of Bold Street, right next to the North Euston Hotel. Our meetings are run on a “drop in” basis every Wednesday between 10.a.m. and 3.00 p.m. Tea, coffee and biscuits are served in a very informal, comfortable atmosphere. We also have a session with exercises especially chosen for Parkinson sufferers but helpers and volunteers can join in too. These exercises will not halt the progression of the disease but they do promote a feeling of well being and are mentally stimulating ( as well as being a good laugh in the process!!) The exercise session is at 12.noon. So if you are affected by Parkinson’s Disease in any way whatsoever, why not give us try, you never know, we might be just that extra tonic you need. Also if you feel like volunteering to help out in any way, pop in on any Wednesday and see what you think. We do hold other regular events, initially they were for fund raising but they are becoming more for the social side now. Sue on 0755 4623 231 e mail: parkinsonsprestonandfleetwood@gmail.com

FY7 Community Beat Christmas is around the corner, the usual addresses have already lit up their houses with tree lights to pile the pressure on the rest of us!! It seems two minutes ago I was typing up an article regarding plans for Tram Sunday, Fleetwood Carnival and the many other successful events that have taken place throughout the summer. Even Halloween and Bonfire night have been and gone, a time of year that traditionally sees a significant increase in Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB). Over the years there has been a steady decrease in the number of incidents being reported relating to ASB and the misuse of fireworks. The legislation was tightened up surrounding the sale and use of fireworks and the over-arching success for Fleetwood has been the Fireworks Extravaganza event. The event gets more impressive each year; the roads are very busy with ‘out of towners’ travelling in, and the numbers packing the prom is a credit to Fleetwood Rotary and other agencies/groups involved. There were ZERO reports of ASB incidents associated with fireworks on 5th November; no unauthorised bonfires built and no deliberate fire setting resulting in a response from the Fire Brigade. This week sees us focussing on delivering key messages regarding Child Sexual Exploitation. We’ve been visiting schools and youth clubs to help deliver safety messages – do you know what the signs to look for are? And, while there is no stereotypical victim of exploitation, there are warning signs in children’s behaviour that may indicate something is wrong – and if you know what you’re looking for, you can take steps to help them. • Has the young person received unexplained gifts or money? • Do they use their mobile phone secretively? • Do they have significantly older friends? • Have they been picked up from home or school by someone you don’t know? • Are they associating with other young people who are already known to be vulnerable or involved in exploitation? • Have they started playing truant from school or regularly going

missing from home? • Have they suffered from a sexually-transmitted infection? • Are they self-harming? • Has their appearance changed? All the above points are indicators, and if you have any concerns you should raise them immediately. Christmas now brings its own challenges. I’d like to take this time to provide some seasonal crime prevention advice without teaching you to suck eggs. When your house is empty, try making it appear there is somebody in, use timers on lamps, close curtains and switch on any external lights. Set any alarms you have and whilst your tree may look magical to you with presents underneath, it does to the burglar too that’s about to help themselves to it for free!! Make every effort to secure your house, sheds and garden, and don’t leave presents/shopping in your car. Always report suspicious activity to us, and if you think a crime is in progress, call us on 999 – don’t wait till it’s too late. Let’s all look out for each other. The main PACT (Police and Communities Together) surgery will be at Asda on the third Saturday of every month between 1pm & 3pm. You can call our voicemail facility on 01253 604911 to leave a message and the right person will call you back over the next few days. We’ll always come out and see you if you prefer at your home address by mutual appointment for a policing need or visit the Lancashire Constabulary website for further ways of contacting us including registering for ‘In The Know’ – a free text messaging service that allows you to be in control about what information you want from us. And don’t forget, we have our own facebook page – Fleetwood Area Police, follow us and ‘like’ us.

THE MOUNT RACING CLUB UPDATE

THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF RACING A Day out at HQ with Fidelma

F

idelma Moon treated her Owners to a memorable day out at the home of British Flat Horse Racing when she lined up in a ÂŁ60,000 Fillies only Nursery on Dubai Future Champions Day at Newmarket. As usual there was a great turn out from the Mount Racing Club with 17 loyal members making the long trip down on a Friday to the Suffolk course and they really had to pinch themselves when they lined up in the Parade Ring along side the likes of Richard Hannon, Sheik Mohammed and Sir Michael Stoute as well as chatting to Willie Carson and co afterwards. The race itself was run as a proper 7f with plenty of speed early on and this was something that was never going to suit Fidelma as she is more a stamina type of horse, but saying that she was far from disgraced and gave her Owners a good run for their money before eventually finishing midfield in a high quality race against some proper 7f specialists. The main thing was that she came back safe from it, which she did, and that everyone enjoyed a fantastic what was a fantastic experience down at HQ. When you look at the big powerful stables and Owners that were represented down there it was a great honour and achievement for the Mount Racing Club to be a part of it and one we all thoroughly enjoyed.

has now been put away for the Winter to allow her to fill out and grow both physically and mentally. She will resume her career for us next year when she will be campaigned over middle distances 1m2f and upwards where she will definitely come into her own and with a bit of luck pick up one or two nice prizes for us.

Eva Clare back on Track

Our 3yo filly returned to action at Musselburgh under stable apprentice Pete Sword and ran a creditable race and one which she will come on a lot for. Eva has been off the track over the Summer months due to the drying ground everywhere and now that this run has blown away the cobwebs she will resume with an Autumn/Winter campaign. She will now go straight to the All Weather where she is proven on both types of surface but she particularly likes the Fibresand at Southwell and we can see her turning into a bit of a course specialist there and hopefully pick up a few nice prizes for her loyal band of Owners

We now have a very limited amount of shares and lease packages available in both horses and anyone who would like to know more can do so by contacting Geoff 07852 153969 or Andy 07940 202312 or by visiting our website www. This was Fidelma Moons last run this year and she themountracingclub.co.uk

Anyone who would like to get involved with us or would like to know any more details about us can do so by contacting Geoff Holden 07852 153969 or Andy Eaton 07940 202312 or by visiting our new website www.themountracingclub.co.uk Advertise your business call 0800 970 7687 or email info@link-mag.co.uk
