Funeral Planner of the year J T Byrne Funeral Directors named regional Funeral Planner of the Year and received a nomination within the top 3 in the country.

T

hornton-Cleveleys and Fleetwood funeral director J T Byrne Funeral Directors has been named the best mid-sized funeral planner in the West Lancashire & Merseyside area and also named within the top 3 in the country at 2015’s Funeral Planner of the Year awards. The win came during a competitive year. Run by market leading funeral plan provider Golden Charter, the awards are the biggest gathering of independent funeral directors in the UK, with this year’s event the largest ever held. The funeral director’s John Byrne said: “We are delighted to have won this prestigious award for the fourth year running. This reflects upon the support we receive from the local community. We are proud to be at the forefront of helping families at their time of need and providing Golden Charter funeral plans.

J T Byrne are a family business supporting families. Ronnie Wayte, Golden Charter’s Chief Executive, said: “In their 22nd year the awards are more competitive than ever before, with funeral plans continuing to grow in popularity. This award is well earned proof that J T Byrne Funeral Directors has reached a remarkable standard.” The Funeral Planner of the Year Awards focus on the funeral planning achievements of independent funeral directors, who make up a growing majority of the funeral industry. With recent Mintel figures showing that the average price of funerals has increased 88% in the past ten years to £3,609, more people are choosing to use pre-paid funeral plans to freeze the cost of the funeral director’s services at today’s prices.

Take a fresh look at Fleetwood Market

W

hat’s on the menu these days as Fleetwood Market Cafe opens its doors for business?

New cafe operator Colin Hind boasts almost 30 years in the food industry, during that time he has acquired a wealth of knowledge and experience which he will now bring to his most recent business venture, Fleetwood Market Cafe.

very well; I enjoy working with the public and meeting people and I am now keen to expand my career in a busier environment and I can’t wait to become a part of the Fleetwood Market family. We offer a varied menu of breakfasts, toasties, salads and main meals with vegetarian options also provided. Customers can also enjoy a varied selection of fresh cream cakes too. Our first week of trading has exceeded my expectations – we’ve been rushed off our feet and long may it continue.”

Colin says; “It’s quite simply named Fleetwood Market Cafe – as that’s exactly what it is!”

The Mayor of Wyre, Councillor Terry Lees officially opened the café on Tuesday 15 November.

Fleetwood resident Colin added: “I have been working in the family-run business for 27 years, 17 of them I have been owner of Capricorn Cafe in the seaside town. I’ve worked in the food industry one way or another since leaving school. Starting my career at the North Euston Hotel in Fleetwood as a kitchen porter I then moved onto a supervisory role within a major supermarket. It was at this time that the opportunity arose to buy Capricorn Cafe.

Councillor Pete Murphy, Cabinet member with responsibility for planning and economic development at Wyre Council, said: “The market café is a fundamental part of our retail offer here at Fleetwood Market and we are very pleased to have Colin and his team on-board. We continue to invest in this valued seaside town attraction and are keen to see it go from strength to strength. Fleetwood Market is home to many businesses; those established here for many years and new ones such as Colin’s. We look forward to seeing them all thrive today and in the future.

When I found out the market cafe was up for lease I couldn’t let the chance go by. I know the industry 14

An Orchid Is Not Just For Christmas By Hannah Stephenson

M

any people are put off by the cost, but I’ve seen large, exotic-looking moth orchids (Phalaenopsis) in shades of pink and cream reduced from £9.99 to under a fiver in my local Marks & Spencer.

Perhaps orchids are not traditionally the plant associated with Christmas, but their long, arching stems bearing sprays of beautifully marked, delicatelooking flowers look great in both modern and traditional settings. Moth orchids are widely grown and well-suited to life indoors, requiring a minimum temperature of 16C. I bought one in Ikea and kept it on an airy kitchen windowsill, where it flowered for four months until it finally needed a rest in November. These plants don’t have a yearly cycle of producing flowers, and can develop flower spikes at any time. Cool nights are important, so allow a dip of a few degrees. Once they’ve finished blooming, cut the flowered stems back to just above a joint, two up from the base, using a pair of sharp secateurs. It should draw up another spike within a few weeks, although mine didn’t show any signs of life for several months until a new branch appeared, producing a string of beautiful blooms. Their rambling roots spread across the surface of the pot and out, searching for nutrients. The roots contain chlorophyll and therefore produce energy from light, so grow the plants in clear pots - it’s also a good way to see if the roots are wet or dry. Trends are changing as people start to shy away from the big, showy flowers to the more dainty, subtle and smaller-flowered types. Slipper orchids (Paphiopedilums), trendy in Victorian times with their waxy leaves and lip-shaped pouch at the front of the flower, are again becoming popular. The flowers are usually long-lasting and can remain in bloom for months. Some people have veered away from orchids in the past, fearing they may need a lot of maintenance. But these elegant plants, which originate from South-East Asia, are actually tough old birds which don’t like too much fuss. It’s generally overwatering that kills them, and they are becoming easier to grow as nurseries bring out new varieties. Most hybrids come from hot, humid forests and like a warm, tropical climate. 18

It’s a myth that they must be shaded, because they do well on windowsills and flower more freely if given some sun. However, it’s best to keep them out of direct sunshine in the summer - and don’t make the mistake of moving them from somewhere very shaded into direct sunlight, or they will suffer leaf scorch. Some orchid-lovers mist the plants regularly, but they really don’t need to. Orchids should just be watered once a week by immersing the pot into a bowl of tepid water until it’s moist all through. Then lift the pot out and sit it on a draining board for a few minutes before putting it back into its permanent pot. The plant should be allowed to dry out between watering. Use a half-strength liquid feed for orchids. Add it each time you water the plant, which you need to do more frequently in summer. Moth orchids should be repotted about once a year - you can buy specific compost for orchids from garden centres. It’s expensive, but worth it as it has the right mix of nutrients. If you grow a cymbidium orchid indoors, be warned that it does not like being repotted and may not flower for several years afterwards if you do so. These orchids, which come in a wide colour range with spikes bearing up to 20 long-lasting flowers, normally flower from early winter to late spring. They are also good specimens for putting outside in the summer to brighten up your patio.

Best of the bunch - Witch hazel (Hamamelis) The scented, spidery blooms and spectacular autumn colour make these medium-sized and large deciduous shrubs a must for the winter gardens. The flowers, which have twisting, ribbon-like petals,

Good enough to eat - Prune blackcurrants December is a good time to prune blackcurrants as the absence of foliage makes it easier to see old stems that need to be removed. Blackcurrants fruit on both new and old wood and are grown with the branches growing in a clump from, or just under, ground level. To prune successfully, you need to maintain a balance between new and old wood, removing around a third of the bush each year to keep the plant healthy and leave a more open bush which will fruit more readily. Where possible, cut older stems to the ground, leaving younger wood to fruit in summer, although realistically you will likely cut out some young growth at the same time. When you have finished pruning, the bush should seem fairly open and there should be a balance between old and new branches. Mulch with well-rotted organic matter after pruning, but don’t let it touch the stems. Three ways to...Succeed with holly 1. If you want berries you will need to plant a male and a female plant close to each other to ensure berry production. If you only have room for one

bush, go for a self-fertile type such as Ilex aquifolium ‘Pyramidalis’ or JC van Tol’, which will produce berries without a partner. 2. In autumn net the branches you will want to cut for berries so the birds don’t strip them. 3. If you want to move a young seedling holly, do it in late winter or early spring to give it the best chance of survival.

THINGS TO DO THIS MONTH • Put up a protective screen to shield newly planted evergreens from wind scorch. • Cover holly berry bunches with netting to ensure they are still there at Christmas. • Check that newly planted trees and shrubs have not been loosened by frost and carefully re-firm their rootballs into the soil with your heel. • Check that stakes and ties are in good condition and in the right position. • Plant any remaining spring-flowering bulbs if soil conditions are suitable. If not, use containers. • Clear any remaining fallen leaves from alpine or rock garden plants, which often react badly to moisture around their crowns. • Look out for apple canker in the bark of trees and prune out infected areas completely. • Leaf through seed catalogues and order vegetable seeds, onion sets, garlic bulbs and seed potatoes you will need in the next few months. • Sow a few pots of radishes or lettuce in a heated propagator until they are ready to be planted out. • If the lawn is not frozen, brush worm casts over the surface on a dry day using a besom or broom. • Bring bay trees grown in pots under cover if cold weather is forecast, as their leaves are susceptible to cold winds and need protection.

cluster thickly on bare stems from autumn to early spring and won’t be damaged by frost, while the broad, oval leaves turn yellow in autumn. Witch hazels can be grown as specimen plants in borders or in groups, depending on the variety. Grow H. x intermedia ‘Pallida’ as a standalone specimen, with its vase-shaped habit and golden autumn leaves, while H. x intermedia ‘Diane’, which grows to 4m (12ft), flowers in mid to late winter and produces bright green leaves which turn orange, yellow or red in autumn. Witch hazels like reasonably fertile, moist but welldrained soil and prefer neutral to acid soil. Place them in sun or partial shade in an open but not exposed spot. Prune any crossing shoots in late winter or early spring to keep a good shape.

Memorial Park earns green heritage accolade

F

leetwood’s Grade II listed Memorial Park has been awarded a prestigious Green Heritage Site accreditation, in recognition of its historical importance and high standards of care and upkeep.

Green Heritage Site status is awarded by Keep Britain Tidy and Historic England to historical sites that are at least 30 years old and demonstrate excellence in heritage conservation. They must also have received a Green Flag Award, marking them as one of the best parks and green spaces in the country. Wyre Council recently restored Memorial Park to its original 1920s landscape thanks to a £2.4m grant from the Heritage and Big Lottery Funds. It is unique in that the entire grounds were created in commemoration of the First World War, unlike most conventional architectural memorials, and it is one of only a handful of listed war memorial parks and gardens in the country. Councillor David Henderson, Cabinet member with responsibility for parks at Wyre Council, said: “The transformation of Memorial Park over the last few years has been a joy to witness. The physical improvements alongside the developing community support and involvement have brought the park back to life for the enjoyment of generations of families. “Achieving our first Green Flag Award was a tremendous moment and Green Heritage Site 20

status is the icing on the cake, and testament to the dedicated work of the parks team, Friends group and volunteers.” Wyre Council was judged on how well it conserves, enhances and helps people enjoy the park’s heritage. Michele Walde, from the Green Flag Award team at Keep Britain Tidy, said: “The achievements at Memorial Park are very encouraging, allowing people to enjoy and appreciate a unique site that is now managed to an international standard.” Memorial Park was designed and built in 1925 by renowned town planner Sir Patrick Abercrombie, and is located on Warrenhurst Road in Fleetwood. Join a Petrifying Pumpkin Carve at the park on Saturday 29 October, 11am until 1.30pm. Free pumpkin carving (first come first served) plus Creepy Crawly Road Show, face painting and balloon crafting. On Halloween, youngsters can explore the park using a simple map to find hidden markers and complete an Xplorer navigational challenge. Simply drop into the pavilion between 1pm and 3pm on Monday 31 October. A small charge of 50p per Xplorer applies. Follow the Friends of Memorial Park on Facebook for more details of upcoming events and activities.

Volunteers plant up the Mount

W

lyre Council received a fantastic response to its appeal for volunteers to help with planting at The Mount in Fleetwood.? The seaward side of the Grade II registered gardens is being restored to its original Victorian design, and the final stage of landscaping provided an opportunity for local residents to get involved. 26 people have so far helped plant 2,000 shrubs such as lavender and eucalyptus, 65 trees and 4,300 flowering bulbs including a variety of daffodils, along the length of the esplanade boundary wall. Local residents Anne Carlos and Norma Banville volunteered because they both wanted to give something back to a community they love. Norma said: “I got involved because I moved here about five years ago and I absolutely love the place and just wanted to give something back.”

Organiser Michelle Southworth said: “It was a good opportunity to do some team work and to come along and help out. It’s been great to get involved.” Councillor David Henderson, Cabinet member with responsibility for parks, said: “I want to say thank you to all the volunteers for coming along and helping Wyre’s staff at The Mount. This shows that the local community likes to get involved in joined up working with the council to continually improve our parks, open spaces and historic landmarks.” The next task for the green fingered volunteers is to plant a new rockery in the east of the garden using reclaimed limestone and a range of plants including smaller shrubs and perennials. Many of the chosen plants are adapted to growing in coastal conditions by having tough, leathery or hairy leaves which protect the plant from salt damage and reduce moisture loss. Find out more at wyre.gov.uk/themount

Anne added: “It’s lovely at The Mount with everything that’s been done so far and it’s nice to think that we’ve played a small part in making it look even more beautiful. We’re both excited to come back next summer and see the daffodils and say that we planted some of those!” A group of Lancashire employees from construction firm Tarmac Readymix, which encourages volunteer work within the company, joined the gardening sessions. 22

Presented by Trio Entertainment, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is about to embark on a theatre tour around the UK and will come to Fleetwood on Thursday 8 December to Sunday 11 December. The successful school children will appear in Saturday’s 2pm and 7pm shows.

Lucia Mae Valentine is one of the lucky children cast in the panto and comments, “I’m very excited and can’t wait to see what it will be like on stage! I have been to watch lots of pantomimes with my family but this is the first ever pantomime I have been in. I think it is going to be so much fun!”

Former EastEnders star Joshua Pascoe, famous for playing Ben Mitchell in the nation’s much loved soap, will be starring in the panto as the hilarious Muddles alongside Blackpool cabaret star Victoria Roberts who plays the terrifying Wicked Queen, and singing
