March Magazine Deadline 12th February 2015

Time for a Fresh Start in 2015, so let me first wish you a Happy New Year – and may it be a great one! We hope it brings success and happiness, and that you carry the experience of the past into a brighter future. We’ve had a great start to the year with our biggest month in business, which means we are helping more businesses than ever before in providing a cost effective solution to reaching the local market. By dedicating our magazines to specific areas we can support local shopping more than any other local media. Two new magazines are soon to be launched, both at 20,000 copies per month: One will be in the Ribble Valley, covering east Preston through to Clitheroe, while we are also producing a new Chorley edition for this growth area, expanding into the surrounding villages. Recent Testimonial just in: “The Link Magazine has continued to be a reliable and solid advertising source whilst providing both good quality print and cost effectiveness on distribution. At one point we had to stop advertising as we were inundated with work! Customer service and the whole process of booking advertising is smooth and flawless.” – LazyLawn Lancashire. Well done to last month’s winner: Joan Andrews for the Where Am I? Competition. £50 is on its way. Once again, have a Great New Year!

Work starts at Fleetwood lakes

Phase one of Fleetwood’s £1.5m seafront facelift gets under way with improvements to the marine lakes. The overall aim is to achieve consistent levels of water, so that a better range of sports and activities can be provided in the future. Work started on 8 December when the main boating lake was dredged and drained. Once empty, any necessary repairs can be carried out to the lining, the aprons will be re-concreted and some of the access pathways improved. The lake will then be refilled with water early next year and focus will shift to the model yacht lake and paddling pool. As the area is a popular route for walkers, the surrounding pathways will remain open as often as possible. Councillor Peter Murphy, Cabinet member with responsibility for the seafront refurbishments, said: ‘Once all the repairs are complete and improved access is created for our engineers

18

to maintain water quality, the potential for these lakes is endless. They are already a stunning asset to Fleetwood, but just think how much better they’ll look if we can turn them into a recognised destination for water sports.’ During the 16-weeks of work around 5,000 tonnes of wind-blown sand is expected to be removed from the water and stored on site. Although black in colour, there is no need for concern. Wyre Council has been working closely with the Environment Agency to reassure the public that the material is perfectly safe. It has simply changed colour after being under water for so long and will gradually turn back to a more familiar state once it has been allowed to dry out. The mounds of sand will be litter picked and transported to Rossall to be used on another Five For Fleetwood project - a new ecology park which will take shape as part of the new sea defences construction. The Five For Fleetwood scheme has been made possible thanks to funding from the Coastal Communities Fund. Other projects include a refurbishment of Euston Gardens, an outdoor splash pad and decked cafe outside Fleetwood leisure centre and a skate park near the Mount pub. All of these should be completed by late spring.

Gaultheria

Use pots in contemporary design

(Winter green)

You may see a lot of these small shrubs in garden centres bearing their colourful red or purple berries at the moment, and they can be easily grown in pots of ericaceous compost or in a garden with lime-free soil in partial shade. Gaultheria is most commonly seen as ground cover under rhododendrons or camellias, but if you want a taller variety you can choose G shallon, which grows to 1.5m, producing dark purple berries. Others, such as G mucronata, are more suitable to add low-growing interest to containers or borders, with their large porcelain-like berries in shades of dark pink, red and white appearing in November.

1

If you want the pot to make an impact, select the pot for its architectural shape rather than plant-holding abilities. Sometimes the pot will provide more of a wow factor without a plant in it.

Male and female flowers are nearly always borne by different varieties, so you need to plant more than one type to be sure you will have berries. Female varieties include ‘Cherry Ripe’ and ‘Lilian’, while male types include ‘Thymifolia’ or ‘Male’.

Horseradish If you’ve loved horseradish with your roast beef this winter, why not try growing your own for an eye-poppingly hot accompaniment?

Buy plants from specialist herb nurseries, or some seed companies offer roots in their autumn catalogues for planting up in late winter or early spring.

Be warned, though, it’s an invasive perennial with deep roots that regrow when they’re broken off and, once established, can be as difficult to get rid of as ground elder.

Make a hole in the soil with a dibber and push a single root into it, thickest end uppermost, leaving the tip at ground level. Plant three roots about 60cm apart for a good clump. Let the plants grow for two years before harvesting.

Grow it in a bottomless bucket sunk into the ground with its rim about an inch above the surface Dig up one plant in September so that the roots don’t spread or October, using the biggest up there and to keep clumps in roots for the kitchen and cutting check. off one of the thinner roots to Only the root of horseradish replant. (Armoracia rusticana) is used. Advertise your business call 0800 970 7687 or email info@link-mag.co.uk

2

Buy identical pots for a strong statement - a row of three tall containers, for instance, will look more impressive than a group of pots of different shapes, sizes and colours.

3

If you want a burst of colour in a space, consider using a pot rather than a plant for that purpose.

Things to do this month… n Make sure that tender and half-hardy fuchsias, remaining dormant in their pots, do not become completely dry. Spray any early growth with tepid water in the light to soften the wood, but do this sparingly. n When watering plants (sparingly) in the greenhouse, water them as early in the day as possible, so that surfaces are dry before nightfall. n Order new summerflowering bulbs and tubers from a reputable supplier. Store them in shallow boxes or trays and keep in a dry, frostfree place until ready to plant. 23

Eric Ollerenshaw’s Column Eric Ollerenshaw OBE MP. Member of Parliament for Lancaster & Fleetwood ‘The last month for me has been the usual busy one. The build up to the festive season has given me an extra opportunity to get out and about what with visiting the Christmas Fayres and Markets. In Parliament I was able to take part in the Annual Fishing Debate. This was an ideal time for me to raise the problems that our local under 10 metre size fishing boats are having with the fishing quotas, especially in regards to Skate. As some of you may know our under 10’s are allocated just 4% of the total UK quota and last year even though hardly any Skate had been ‘landed’ locally, a stop was put on fishing them as the National Quota had been reached. I was delighted that as a result of debate the Minister agreed to look at ways of increasing the under 10’s share of this quota and I am also hoping that we can look at means to have regional quota’s as well, as sometimes while fish stocks may be low ‘down south’ they are still plentiful up here!

Just before Christmas, as Chairman of the All Party group on Pancreatic Cancer, along with Pancreatic Cancer UK and colleagues I handed a national petition into Number 10 calling on the drug Abraxane to remain available through the Cancer Drugs Fund. While this drug, unfortunately isn’t a cure, it has been the first new drug for 20 years to offer a possible extra 2 months of life to some sufferers from this terrible disease – so there is my New Year’s wish. Finally although a little late in the day I would like to wish everyone a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year.’

FY7 Community Beat Hello I’m writing this article mid-December for print in January. I sure you’re well on your way to full recovery from the Christmas indulgence, with many of us now ‘pretending’ to do the whole keep fit thing for 2015!! Anyway, if you are – good luck with it, you’re a better person than me! So far in December, our drink drive campaign has had a massive impact throughout the division. There have already been 6 arrests for a positive breath test plus hundreds of negative breath tests. Remember, it’s the morning after that catches so many people out – if you’re out for a drinking session make sure you have the plans in place for the next day so you don’t need to drive to work/kids to school etc. 6 arrests is purely a statistic, but behind that figure is 6 lives possibly damaged through a conviction at court, disqualification, loss of employment, financial strain and stress on the family. Simple - don’t do it. For those on the t’internet, take a look at our Lancs Police website – ‘Do It Online’ allows you to report incidents and crimes online direct through to us. You can complain and compliment and most importantly, it eases

the process and frustrations sometimes encountered by making it easy to email directly to an officer. From this website you could choose to join the thousands of other people already signed up to our new ‘In The know’ text messaging service. This allows you to tailor what information we send through to you, whether it is crime prevention, news alerts, crime pattern information or witness appeals. You’ll also find we will use it to advertise job vacancies. All this is in addition to the Fleetwood Area Police facebook and twitter pages. On the more traditional front, a real life PC/ PCSO will be in the ASDA store on Dock Street on the third Saturday of each month between 1pm and 3pm. We’re always joined by a Fleetwood Town Councillor too so between us we should be able to assist or refer on your information. This being my first article of the new year, it would be right to wish you all a Happy 2015!! And don’t forget, we have our own facebook page – Fleetwood Area Police, follow us and ‘like’ us.

SWEET DEALS ON SURGERY, THE FRANCEENS, DINOSAURS ARE SH*T DRAGONS Saturday 7th March, 8pm The Ferret, 55 Fylde Road, Preston, Lancashire, PR1 2XQ. Sweet Deals On Surgery are a band of three men from the north of England who play catchy/shouty/indie/ punk rock and drink too much. Alex-Bass/Voice RobGuitar/Voice Tim-Drums have just released their debut E.P ‘Total Reek Hole’, with song titles such as ‘Elvis Costello is a w****r’ and ‘Desk from the waist down’ it’s safe to say SDOS don’t take themselves too seriously. Make no mistake though, the songs contained within these titles are well crafted, melodic, instantly catchy noise pop, with structures that veer a little from the norm. The Franceens are a 3 piece rock and roll band from York UK. They have been described by many as being a ‘real band’. They are known for their ferocious live shows, constant gigging, and their high-energy version of garage/rock and roll style music. They started in February 2013 and have been going strong ever since. Dinosaurs Are Sh*t Dragons: while most bands try to be something they’re not this Blackpool 4 piece are trying hard to not be something they are: socially-inept, culturally-handicapped genre cuckoos: pinching the best bits of a mixed bag of influences and inciting big dumb sing alongs across the North West with a barely contained energy that makes onlookers wonder if they’re trying to kill each other. Sure, it’s not big or clever or cool, but maybe that’s the Music Industry’s problem, maybe it should take a little break from its fancy haircuts and status updates and just have a bit of a laugh. Free Entrance. http://theferret.info

GOONIES NEVER SAY DIE, CONSTANT WAVES + TRIBAL FIGHTERS Saturday 28th March, 8pm The Ferret, 55 Fylde Road, Preston, Lancashire, PR1 2XQ. Goonies Never Say Die are a five piece instrumental/ post-rock band from Blackpool. They have released two albums on Deep Elm Records with a third to follow in 2015. Free Entrance. http://theferret.info

THE MOUNT RACING CLUB UPDATE

THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF RACING Looking Back at 2014

2

014 started for us with two very nice horses both returning from injury and with high hopes for both. Eva Clare was an unraced 3yo filly who had had an operation last year to remove a floating bone on her knee but was now ready to go and she impressed us with a nice debut run at the start of February when she finished 2nd at Wolverhampton. Three weeks later she confirmed the promise of that run when she bolted up in a Maiden at Southwell winning nicely under a confident ride from Ben Curtis. She then returned to Southwell in March and despite being hampered in the closing stages did well to finish 3rd on her first step into handicap company. Eva then made her Turf debut at Yarmouth in a Class 4 handicap and despite the firm ground not being to her liking plugged on gamely to finish 3rd. She then had a break over the summer months and returned to action at Musselburgh in October where she ran a nice little race that will have blown away the cobwebs ahead of an All Weather Winter campaign where we hope she can regain the winning thread. Our other horse Loki’s Strike in the mean time was only weeks away from an eagerly anticipated comeback in March when disaster struck on the gallops as the injury we had so patiently been nursing him through flared up again and this time it was to spell the end of his racing career. This was a great

shame for Loki who was lightly raced 4yo but at the end of the day the horses well being came first and he was successfully re homed to enjoy the rest of his life naturally. The departure of Loki meant the arrival of a new horse and we broke all records to bring in a very taking 2yo filly by multiple Group1 winner Dylan Thomas. She was named Fidelma Moon and in early August made her eagerly anticipated debut in a 7f Maiden at Great Yarmouth where despite showing greenness early on she battled on gamely to finish 2nd, beaten only by a short head in a photo finish. Four weeks later she reappeared again in a what looked like a very classy little Conditions race at Wolverhampton and despite fluffing her lines at the start she powered home to victory in impressive style beating some decent horses in doing so. Her next port of call was a trip down to HQ Newmarket where she lined up in a valuable 2yo race on Future Champions Day and provided all her connections with with a memorable day out at the home of Flat Racing. Finishing midfield in a high quality race was no disgrace for Fidelma and a positive way to end the year for The Mount Racing Club, she has now been put away for the Winter so she can strengthen up both physically and mentally and will return next season to give her Owners plenty more magical days out with her.
