Classic scones with Sweet Eve Strawberries and cream This classic British summertime treat is served with beautiful British strawberries.
Preparation time: 5 minutes Cooking time: 15 minutes Makes 8 scones You’ll need: 225g self-raising flour Pinch of salt 55g butter 25g caster sugar 150ml milk 1 free-range egg, beaten 400g punnet Sweet Eve strawberries Clotted or whipped cream to serve 20
Method: Preheat the oven to 220C. Lightly grease a baking sheet. Mix together the flour and salt and rub in the butter to form breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar and then add the milk a bit at a time until a soft dough forms. Turn on to a floured surface and knead gently. Roll out to a depth of about 2cm. Using a 5cm cutter, stamp out rounds and place on the prepared baking sheet. Gently knead any remaining dough together, roll out and cut more scones.
Continue until all the dough is used. Using a pastry brush, lightly cover each scone with the beaten egg. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes until well risen and golden. Meanwhile, slice the Sweet Eve strawberries and set aside. When the scones are ready, cool on a wire rack, then split and spread on a thick layer of cream. Feedback wanted on Mount plans Views are being sought on the future use of Fleetwood’s Mount Pavilion and its gardens
H
aving targeted specific groups about plans to restore and raise the profile of this iconic landmark, Wyre Council now wants the wider public to share their thoughts. An unmanned display will tour various Fleetwood venues in May, June and July with opportunities for people to complete questionnaires and make general comments. The council has been given £1m to restore the seaward side of the grounds and a bid is being submitted to the Heritage Lottery Fund in September for more money to transform the Pavilion, rose garden and outbuildings. For interest and inspiration, the display will include a collection of Mount related objects crafted entirely out of cardboard for a recent storytelling event. Catch it at the following venues: Fleetwood Library, week commencing 26 May Kemp Street Children’s Centre, week commencing 1 June Fleetwood Museum, week commencing 13 July

Rotary Dementia Cafe goes from Strength to Strength Writes Malcom Lewis
I
n August 2013 the Rotary Club of Fleetwood started what we then called ‘The Dementia Café’ in ‘Café 3one6’ on Lord Street. After a few months of minimal success, we got the opportunity to move venue, in May 2014 we moved into the former Methodist Church on Mount Road. We have steadily grown over the months and we particularly want to contact more Fleetwood people. There is a great atmosphere among all present, and we have activities, and speakers coming at most meetings varying from ‘How to make your own flower displays’ to ‘The history of the trawler Jacinta presently in Fleetwood docks’. We meet every third Thursday morning between 10.00 and noon with drinks available at a small fee and ‘free biscuits’. Whilst we have close ties with the Alzheimer’s Society we can direct people to the right sources or agencies for their particular needs. The aim of the group is simply to give those with 26

We are a small independent group and meet on a weekly basis at our hall at the top of Bold Street, right next to the North Euston Hotel. Our meetings are run on a “drop in” basis every Wednesday between 10.a.m. and 3.00 p.m. Tea, coffee and biscuits are served in a very informal, comfortable atmosphere. We also have a session with exercises especially chosen for Parkinson sufferers but helpers and volunteers can join in too. These exercises will not halt the progression of the disease but they do promote a feeling of well being and are mentally stimulating ( as well as being a good laugh in the process!!) The exercise session is at 12.noon. So if you are affected by Parkinson’s Disease in any way whatsoever, why not give us try, you never know, we might be just that extra tonic you need. Also if you feel like volunteering to help out in any way, pop in on any Wednesday and see what you think. leased to say both our horses have made satisfactory starts to the 2015 Flat season and hopefully it shouldn’t be too long before they’re winning again. Eva Clare has run in two decent handicaps at Southwell and has finished a creditable 5th and 4th in them. She has also made her first trip and indeed ours as well down to the newly opened Chelmsford City Racecourse in Essex. The course is a deep All Weather one that rides on the slow side and is likened to the going of Good to Soft on the Turf so it suits Eva quite well. Cheered on by her loyal Owners who made the long trip down south she was partnered on this occasion by the highly talented stable apprentice jockey Joey Haynes who was quickly away from the gates and positive on her throughout. As the furlong pole loomed it looked like she had beaten off her fellow pacesetters but off such a strong early gallop the race was set up for the well handicapped Favourite who came with a well timed run to swoop and win the race with Eva finishing a very creditable 2nd. The handicapper has left Eva alone after these runs and she remains on what looks like a winnable mark of 64, one we hope we can capitalise on now. Fidelma Moon started her campaign off over a slightly shorter than ideal trip of 7f at Wolverhampton and despite running well for the first half of the race she was soon outpaced but plugged on gamely to finish 5th. After this we stepped her up in distance to a new trip of 1m2f in a hot little race at Doncaster where the game plan was to get her some cover and let her settle into the race. This unfortunately didn’t happen as the race was first decimated with non runners and then Fidelma
breaking from the gates a bit too good and finding herself out in front with no cover. With no early pace Fidelma was way too keen out in front and jockey Joey Haynes despite his best efforts of trying to restrain her had to admit defeat and let her stride on. This resulted in her tiring towards the end of the race and she eventually finished 6th. Fidelma is a young horse who is still learning and where as the trip wasn’t a problem, she does now need to learn to settle in her races and this is something that Karl and the team will work on. The handicapper has now dropped her to a lenient mark of 70 which is a big help and we’re sure it won’t be long before she’s back gracing the Winners enclosure again.

he first two weeks in June provides the last opportunity to see our Great War exhibition – Somewhere in France. In connection with that exhibition we have two family WWI themed days on Saturdays June 6th and 13th from 12 noon to 15.00. There is a chance to meet and talk to a Tommy back from the trenches and to meet his sister Alice, doing her bit at home whilst her brother has been fighting overseas. Normal admission charges apply on these days. Fleetwood Museum will be hosting events for Fleetwood Maritime Day on Saturday June 6th. Other events will be on Jacinta, in the Steamer at teatime and in the North Euston Hotel Ballroom for a final concert at 7.00. The Museum will host a presentation of Fish and Ships, A History of Sea Songs with Derek Gifford and sessions with shanty group Nine Tenths Below in the Harriet hall and another in the Museum with female duo Scolds Bridle – celebrating 40 years of performing together in festivals and clubs all over the UK. Tickets and info are available from the North Euston Hotel. On Friday June 12th at 18.30, the museum will be holding its popular Seaside Special Night. This is a real family occasion with games and refreshments and of course the ever popular Punch and Judy show ! Adult admission is just £2 with free admission for children – a fun night for the family ! On Wednesday 17th June at 14.00 our guest speaker will be retired army officer Andy Stevens talking about

West Fleetwood Computer Clinic goes to the dogs... ...and cats, budgies and hamsters

n 17th April the West Fleetwood Computer Clinic team supplied and installed three computers for the local RSPCA branch at their Fleetwood HQ. ‘It all started with a phone call for help from Liz, the local manager’, said Steve Berger from the Clinic. ‘She needed computers for administration and volunteer training at their Fleetwood offices, which are currently undergoing refurbishment.’ The Clinic team were able to help and just four days later were installing three complete machines, donated by an anonymous Blackpool company. All the machines were thoroughly cleaned, digitally and physically, and were supplied with all the software and cabling that that Charity required. The machines were refurbished and supplied completely free of charge, all parts and time donated by Clinic members. This donation brings the total number of computers supplied by the Clinic this year to 37. ‘We can only donate as many machines as we are given by local companies and individuals,’ said Steve. ‘Stocks of

machines are quite low at the moment so more old computers are currently required.
