Special event marks contribution of volunteers at The Mount
T
he Mount Pavilion and Gardens in Fleetwood has hosted a special event to thank all those involved in the transformation of the gardens to-date and mark the start of plans to restore the remainder.
The seaward side of the Grade II registered gardens was restored to its original Victorian landscape last year, thanks to a £1m personal donation from Mrs Doreen Lofthouse and local volunteers who gave 50 hours of time to help plant the gardens. Wyre Council has since received initial funding of £142,000 from the Heritage and Big Lottery Funds to develop a proposal to restore the landward side, including pavilion, rose garden and gate lodge. Volunteers and community members were treated to a special screening of footage from the North West Film Archive, narrated by local historian Dick Gillingham, including a visit to the town by George VI and Queen Elizabeth and Fleetwood during the coronation year of Queen Elizabeth II. Thanking those involved Councillor David Henderson, Cabinet member with responsibility for parks and open spaces at Wyre Council, said: “The Mount couldn’t have been revived without the help of volunteers – thank you very much. Thank you also 26
to Mrs Lofthouse who listened to our ideas for the gardens and helped make them a reality. Her £1m donation allowed us to restore half of the grounds and we’re now able to bid for funding to complete the other half. “The Mount is the fourth historical site Wyre Council has set out to bring back to former splendour in Fleetwood, following extensive work at Marine Hall Gardens and the restoration of Euston Gardens and Memorial Park, and our intention is to make it a focal point in the town once again.” Wyre Council will begin developing proposals in May and will consult with the public as to the fine detail of the restoration. In particular, how the pavilion might be used as a space for events, exhibitions and teaching, how the lodge could accommodate a mess facility for volunteers and how the rose garden (Mary Hope Garden) might be restored. A series of public events and activities will take place later in the year before a second application to the Heritage Lottery Fund for the full project, totalling around £2.4m, is submitted in 2018. All for FREE!” The current problem is that the Clinic has more potential new owners that it has kit to rehouse! We need help to assist Nicola our Fun Day Secretary to oversee the Fun Day in the Marine Gardens, we also need help in dealing with Road Closures, booking bands, getting all Schools and Youth Organisations interested in entering Floats and the Fancy Dress sections. As well as the new Retinue Team, we also have other long standing members who work hard staging the Carnival each year, but we need more help. If we do not get more help 2017 Carnival will be cancelled, so come on Fleetwood Folk help us out, make it you New Year resolution, get involved. Keep saying this, but new members bring new ideas which we need also more hands make less hard work for all concerned. Therefore if you want Fleetwood Annual Traditional Carnival to carry on, please come forward and help. Come January we meet only once a month, perhaps a little more near the time.
