Local Rotary Samartians Meeting To talk about the vital work Samaritans do

Malcolm Lewis, Press officer of Fleetwood Rotary Club says; ‘Fleetwood Rotary Club was pleased to welcome Mr Jim Dickinson from the Samaritans to their recent club meeting. Jim is the local Samaritans recruitment officer, and he gave an interesting talk about the vital work Samaritans do in supporting individuals in crisis. Jim talked about the origins of Samaritans which now has some 201 branches throughout the country; with the Blackpool branch being founded in 1959.’ He continued; ‘Their service is totally confidential, and as well as the usual phone calls members utilise e mail, texting, as well as correspondence to help people in need. There is a constant requirement for individuals who are both non judgemental and have good listening skills to volunteer their services, where they will both receive training and be fully supported.’

FY7 Community Beat Hello We have increased our ability to undertake Community Roadwatch, targeting speeding motorists on a number of roads throughout Fleetwood where the 20mph limit is in force. We know this is a topic of concern to many local residents. Last month saw our Chief Constable and the Police & Crime Commissioner visit Fleetwood where they took part in a live question and answer session on Radio Lancashire. This seemed to go down very well and addressed some local issues as well as those affecting Lancashire as a whole, particularly the reduction in the Police budget. Some local residents attended the event and posed questions direct to them. Following on from this, we will be holding another of our popular Q&A sessions on facebook specifically looking at local issues. This seems to be well received each time it’s done – watch out for this! You may have seen in the local press about a dog bite incident that occurred in Fleetwood. A man was bitten on the face by a dog tied up outside the shop. The owner has been interviewed and summonsed for the relevant offence. We would urge all dog owners not to leave their dogs unattended tied up outside a shop; likewise, people should not approach dogs unknown to them without the owner being present. We’re aware from comments on facebook that there’re concerns of dogs being stolen from Fleetwood. We do not have

any recorded crimes of dogs being stolen recently, nor is there a pattern of us being called to express concern about possible attempts to steal dogs. Unfortunately this type of rumour quickly picks up followers. With that said though, your dog is likely to be seen as a family member, and leaving your dog unattended in public may mean that it could get stolen. For those on the t’internet, take a look at our Lancs Police website – ‘Do It Online’ allows you to report incidents and crimes online direct through to us. You can complain and compliment and most importantly, it eases the process and frustrations sometimes encountered by making it easy to email directly to an officer. From this website you could choose to join the thousands of other people already signed up to our new ‘In The know’ text messaging service. This allows you to tailor what information we send through to you, whether it is crime prevention, news alerts, crime pattern information or witness appeals. You’ll also find we will use it to advertise job vacancies. All this is in addition to the Fleetwood Area Police facebook and twitter pages. On the more traditional front, a real life PC/PCSO will be in the ASDA store on Dock Street on the third Saturday of each month between 1pm and 3pm. We’re always joined by a Fleetwood Town Councillor too so between us we should be able to assist or refer on your information.

Local Scouts Head to Scout Jamboree in Japan 3 young people have been selected from Wyre District Scouts to attend the 23rd World Scout Jamboree in Japan in 2015. The Jamboree is a global gathering of Scouts and Guides from over 150 countries from around the world. They have had a fantastic boost with their fund raising efforts from JT Byrne Funeral Directors. The young people have to raise £3000 each to attend. John donated on behalf of the company £1000 to help them attend this incredible camp at Kirara-hama, Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan.

These exercises will not halt the progression of the disease but they do promote a feeling of well being and are mentally stimulating ( as well as being a good laugh in the process!!) The exercise session is at 12.noon. So if you are affected by Parkinson’s Disease in any way whatsoever, why not give us try, you never know, we might be just that extra tonic you need. Prime Minister announces funding for Fleetwood Fish Park

Prime Minister David Cameron has today announced that £2.5m from the Regional Growth Fund has been allocated to Fleetwood Fish Park.

bid was made by Reform Energy with a plan to develop land in Fleetwood into a fish park and create an innovative energy recovery plant adjacent to the park. The announcement follows a visit to the area by Communities and Local Government Minister Penny Mordaunt MP last week at the request of Eric Ollerenshaw, MP for Lancaster and Fleetwood. During the visit, she acknowledged the potential of the project and praised the passion of local people to make it work. Councillor Peter Gibson, Leader of Wyre Council, said: ‘I would like to thank Eric for all his hard work in making this come about and the Minister for coming to Fleetwood and recognising the potential that can be released with a fish park. I would also like to thank the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership for their support in this bid.’ Councillor Pete Murphy, Cabinet member with responsibility for economic development at Wyre Council, added: ‘This is fantastic news, not just for Fleetwood but the whole borough. It’s not just about a fish park though. There will be jobs created at the energy plant, in construction and possibly new retail and housing. It will have a massive positive impact with long term benefits.’ Eric Ollerenshaw MP said: ‘I am absolutely delighted that the Fleetwood Fish Park project has been allocated £2.5m. My thanks to the Prime Minister and to Penny Mordaunt MP who visited Fleetwood to see the site last week. The idea of regenerating Fleetwood and the fish processing industry with a fish park has been

around for a while. I am really proud to have played my part in getting this money on the table to finally get this project started and my thanks to Reform Energy and Wyre Council for their work in supporting and designing this successful bid. This is another vote of confidence in the future of our town.’ The Regional Growth Fund supports projects that also raise private sector investment to create economic growth and employment. The funding will be used to create a fish park on land at the docks, creating new accommodation for existing fish processing businesses and expanding the industry. Plastic film manufacturing firm Victrex, based at Hillhouse International Business Park in Thornton, was also successful in a £2.5m bid for a world class research and development high performance polymer innovation centre. It will undertake industrial and experimental research of new products and markets, triggering the next phase of business growth and creating 64 high quality new jobs. Main activities will be the construction of the innovation centre (approx 18 months) followed by the execution of a portfolio of research projects, scaling up new products to full production and commercialisation.

THE MOUNT RACING CLUB UPDATE

THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF RACING Both Horses back in and ready to roll

Pleased to report that both our horses are back in from their Winter breaks and are cantering away and looking well on the gallops. Our 4yo filly Eva Clare has fully recovered from the injury she suffered to her leg and is 100% sound on it again. She is now doing her final pieces of work before she is set to run in the first week of March on the All Weather at Southwell. Eva has a fine record at the track having won and been placed there and we are hoping for a good run from her on her return. Fidelma Moon is also in good order at home and has strengthened up nicely over the Winter months. We have pencilled in a couple of races on the All Weather for her in March, one at Wolverhampton and one at Kempton. At this stage though these are only precautionary entries and if we feel she is not quite ready then she will not run. But if Fidelma is ready she will line up in one before going on to a Turf campaign which will be her main target for the year.

Middleham Open Day 2015

The annual event takes place on Good Friday which this year falls on April 3rd and is a must for all horse racing fans. There are 14 stables situated around the village of Middleham with over 500 horses housed in them and on this day the yards throw open there doors and invite everyone to come along and see first hand what goes on behind them. As well as Karl Burkes yard there are other high profile ones to see including Mark Johnston and Ann and George Duffields to name two. It’s a great day out and we will be in attendance up at Spigot Lodge stables so why not pop along and say hello.

Happy Retirement

Nine years ago our very first horse Ever Special won a Selling Hurdle at Leicester and was ridden by the Champion Jockey AP McCoy. It was such a momentous day for us having our first winner and even more so by having the services of the great man on board. The one thing that struck us most was the professionalism of AP who insisted we followed the protocol of the Owner/Jockey relationship on the day and allow him to call us ‘Sir’ at all times, even though we were in complete awe of him. Tony McCoy rode his first winner at the age of 17 in 1992 and over an illustrious 23 year career has ridden over 4,300 winners including every major race there is and has been crowned Champion Jockey for the last 19 years. He is a truly incredible Sportsman, the likes of which I doubt we will see again, and his decision to call it a day at the end of April will be a great loss to the sport. But we can all be thankful for his achievements and wish him all the best in his retirement, he certainly has earned it.
