ADVERTISE YOUR BUSINESS

to your Fleetwood Town Magazine. The Awesome Autumn is upon us! It’s a fantastic time with exciting events as the nights grow shorter: We have Halloween to look forward to, followed closely by Bonfire Night, so why not find out how to make Jack-o’-Lanterns inside? If you have any events planned over the next few months, make sure they get listed FREE in LINK-MAG monthly magazine, now covering 20,000 homes in Lancaster. We’ve had a fantastic September dealing with more new businesses and enquiries, and we’re looking forward to continued growth over the coming months with even more new areas. We’ve supported Stanah School with Hi Vis vests for their pupils on trips out, so that they will be safe and visible. If you have any sponsoring options around Lancaster, please let us know. Well done to last month’s winner: Lesley Tague for the Where Am I? Competition. £50 is on its way. Have a great Halloween, and see you next month!

The most thoughtful decision you could make At J T Byrne, two generations of the family work together to make funeral arrangements that little bit easier to handle at a time when you need help most.

With a pre-paid funeral plan, the cost of which is frozen at today’s price, you are protected against inflation and any other price increase, no matter how much they rise in the future.

Established in 1989, they are the only fully qualified, truly independent funeral directors in Thornton, It reassures you loved ones that your wishes will be Cleveleys & Fleetwood, and deliver a personal service recorded and carried out, and allows them to grieve with both professionalism and dignity. during a most difficult period of time. Dying is certainty of life, but it still remains a subject which some feel difficult to talk about. It means that, more often than not, funeral arrangements aren’t discussed or made in advance. This can, unfortunately mean wishes aren’t always met, and grieving families need to make arrangements at short notice during a very difficult time for them - emotionally & financially.

It also means that your family doesn’t have to worry about the money for your funeral to be paid for, it has already been taken care of. For more information on our pre-paid funeral plans, please telephone our office and we will send you more information or alternatively call in for a chat in person, the kettle is always on.

A funeral plan from your local independent funeral director makes perfect sense

With a Golden Charter funeral plan you’ll benefit from: • Protection against rising funeral costs • Reassurance for your family – no uncertainty or difficult decisions • Complete flexibility to choose the funeral you want • Guaranteed acceptance

gardens with the added benefit of a safer community and reduced emergency call outs.’

This is being organised by a multi agency team with representatives from Fleetwood Town Council, Fleetwood Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, Fleetwood Police, Wyre Borough Council, Regenda Group, and Fleetwood Rotary.

Sgt. Danny Whittaker of Fleetwood Police said ‘One of the objectives of this event is to reduce incidents of anti social behaviour associated with November the fifth and to provide a safe environment for families to enjoy great entertainment and a spectacular firework display. We fully support this event.’

Chair of the organising committee Richard Newson said ‘Funding has been received from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service Community Fund generated by a community partnership and. Regenda Group. HALLOWEEN

HOW TO MAKE A TRADITIONAL JACK O’LANTERN STEP 1: The traditional scary face is very straightforward to make. Cut a lid in the top of the pumpkin around the stem so that you can scoop out the insides. A good rule of thumb is that the lid should be about two-thirds the diameter of the pumpkin. Take a sharp, long-bladed knife and, holding it at an angle, cut a circular or hexagonal-shaped lid. Holding the knife at an angle when making the cut will help ensure the lid does not fall into the empty pumpkin. Use a large spoon to scoop out the insides - the seeds etc., then gently scrape the walls clean and the base until it is flat.

STEP 2: Put the pumpkin on a table and turn it until you decide which side you want to cut. Using a fine permanent marker, draw on the face, and using a sharp knife with a firm, short blade, carefully follow your guidelines. Once all the cuts have been make, remove the pieces by gently pushing them from the inside out. For more complicated patterns use a stencil pinned to the pumpkin, prick the motif onto the pumpkin’s surface using a thick needle, join the dots with a marker pen and cut.

STEP 3: Onto the flat inside base of the pumpkin place a tea light. White candles will make the lantern glow most effectively, although for a more spooky effect, put the candle in a coloured glass holder.

...And once the festivities are over, do remember that the pumpkin can be added to the compost heap. Advertise your business call 0800 970 7687 or email info@link-mag.co.uk

PICKING YOUR PUMPKIN... Rule one is to buy a pumpkin of good size. A small one will be fiddly to cut and something the size of a handball will look a bit pathetic. A good average size is 30-40 cm tall, with a well rounded shape. When selecting your future lantern, check for damage and bruising, and reject any with injury, for they will not last so long. Also, do not carry a pumpkin by its stem as this will injure it.

Laptops, Phones and Tablets sorted – FREE! Whatever the technology, this local community group will try to help!

The West Fleetwood Community Computer Clinic, an initiative of Emmanuel Church West, has handled all kinds of technologies in its first six months of operation. Some clients now make it a regular date! Whether it’s a virus riddled Laptop, a Tablet which has lost its programs and music or a phone which won’t connect to the internet, they try to help and it’s all FREE! ‘Not only can we sort out many technical issues, we also re-cycle older, donated, equipment for community use,’ said Dave Carlos who leads the team. ‘We never know what kind of issues will walk through the door but we try to help everyone, sometimes it takes several days to find an answer, but we haven’t had a failure yet! We also offer training for those who need a little help. One client wanted to save videos from YouTube

for talks he was giving to community groups. Others wanted to know how to get their music onto their tablets. We don’t know everything but we usually know where to look to find an answer.’ Hosted at the Rossall Tavern by kind permission of the landlords, Ash and Pam, the Clinic is completely free to everyone. ‘We have been offered payment but we have asked folk to make a donation to a charity instead’ said Dave. ‘We do this to support the local community and as “The church which meets in the Pub”, the Tavern is the ideal location.’ The Clinic meets regularly on Monday nights starting at 7:30pm. The next dates are: Oct 13 & 27, Nov 10 & 24, Dec 8. More details from Dave on 01253 424675.

Rotary Club Dementia drop in centre The Fleetwood Rotary Drop-in Memory Centre at The old Mount Methodist Church continues to go from strength to strength

It is providing excellent facilities for those with dementia and their carers. It provides an opportunity to drop in for a chat and meet others; talk with the volunteer helpers available and get professional advice. Maurice Dowsing Chair of The Rotary’s Community Service Committee said, ‘We have now been in the new premises at the former Mount Methodist Church for four months and it would appear that we are beginning to get a regular clientele. Even over the summer months when people are away on holidays we managed to attract new people to the centre. We are hoping that in the latter months of the year all those who have visited so far will return.’ 28

The former Mount Methodist Church

The centre is open every third Thursday in the month, and all will be made very welcome. For further details please contact Maurice Dowsing on 07920422324

PARKINSONS DISEASE SUPPORT GROUP Our main aims are to give support to people with Parkinson’s Disease, their families and friends. We are a small independent group and meet on a weekly basis at our hall at the top of Bold Street, right next to the North Euston Hotel. Our meetings are run on a “drop in” basis every Wednesday between 10.a.m. and 3.00 p.m. Tea, coffee and biscuits are served in a very informal, comfortable atmosphere. We also have a session with exercises especially chosen for Parkinson sufferers but helpers and volunteers can join in too. These exercises will not halt the progression of the disease but they do promote a feeling of well being and are mentally stimulating ( as well as being a good laugh in the process!!) The exercise session is at 12.noon. So if you are affected by Parkinson’s Disease in any way whatsoever, why not give us try, you never know, we might be just that extra tonic you need. Also if you feel like volunteering to help out in any way, pop in on any Wednesday and see what you think. We do hold other regular events, initially they were for fund raising but they are becoming more for the social side now. Sue on 0755 4623 231 e mail: parkinsonsprestonandfleetwood@gmail.com

FY7 Community Beat Hello October and November are fast approaching; I’m making plans to deal with the expected issues these months bring. Different seasons bring different ‘challenges’ that need to be tackled; and with Halloween and Bonfire Night being just around the corner we have our work cut out! To repeat the massive success of recent years, the organising committee of the Fleetwood Fireworks Extravaganza are well under way with the final touches now being made. We know that this single event has significantly reduced most of the anti-social behaviour across Fleetwood on 5th November, but we must not forget about the vulnerable or elderly members of the community who usually fear this period of the year as the darker nights close in. Please come to the station if you want a ‘no trick or treaters/no carol singers’ sign. Although this sounds a bit harsh, we have found these signs to work well and if you don’t want to be called at, then display one of these signs at your door and most people report to us that they work.` There have been a number of successful prosecutions at court recently against a number of youths responsible for burglaries on elderly residents across the town. This sickens pretty much everyone and it’s good to see the numbers of people coming forward to provide evidence. We’re glad to say that these types of offences have significantly reduced,

but please stay on the look-out for your neighbours. Should you notice something suspicious at a neighbouring property please call the police. We’re well aware that there have been issues with the speed our 101 number is answered and senior officers are making changes to vastly improve that. If you suspect a crime is in progress then the advice is always to use 999. Remember, if your gut feeling says something is wrong, it probably is – call us! The main PACT (Police and Communities Together) surgery will be at Asda on the third Saturday of every month between 1pm & 3pm. You can call our voicemail facility on 01253 604911 to leave a message and the right person will call you back over the next few days. We’ll always come out and see you if you prefer at your home address by mutual appointment for a policing need or visit the Lancashire Constabulary website for further ways of contacting us including registering for ‘In The Know’ – a free text messaging service that allows you to be in control about what information you want from us. And don’t forget, we have our own facebook page – Fleetwood Area Police, follow us and ‘like’ us. Take Care, Sergeant Daniel Whitaker

THE MOUNT RACING CLUB UPDATE

THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF RACING Trophy Presentation for winning owners

Fidelma Moon Wins at Wolvers

O

ur new 2yo filly Fidelma Moon confirmed the promise of her debut 2nd placing by scoring in a 7f Novice Stakes at Wolverhampton in what could turn out to be a very hot little race. In a small but very select field of 5 she lined up against a previous winner from the Ann Duffield yard and 2 well regarded types from the big Newmarket stables, one which had previously ran in a Listed race. There was still signs of ‘greenness’ from Fidelma as at first she was a bit reluctant to enter the stalls and then when they opened she missed the break completely giving away 4 or 5 lengths to the others. Regular Jockey Joey Haynes soon got her organised though and after 2 furlongs she rounded the field and settled nicely at the head of affairs. Joey managed to get a breather into her down the back straight and then as they turned for home 2f out he kicked on again. This soon had the others in trouble and Fidelma lengthened away quite nicely and went onto to win a shade cosily in the end eased down at the line, much to the delight of her happy band of Owners who were cheering her on from the Stands. This was a very impressive win from Fidelma when you consider the opposition she has beaten

and one that had all the Racing ‘Hacks’ purring over afterwards. She was especially singled out as ‘A very nice prospect’ by Simon Mapletoft who hosts the racing channel ‘At the Races’ and would definitely go in his ‘Horses to Follow’ list. All this is made more exciting when you consider her breeding. She’s the daughter of multiple Group1 winner Dylan Thomas and the majority of his offspring improve considerably with age and when they are stepped up in distance. We knew this when we bought her from the sales and feeling was that if she achieves anything as a 2yo it would be a bonus, but with this performance she’s certainly done more than that. We may now consider giving her one more run before the season ends but after that she will be put away for the winter and let her grow up and mature both physically and mentally and then we can all look forward to a very smart prospect for the future. We have plenty of share packages available in our horses and if anyone would like to know more or discuss them they can do so by contacting Geoff 07852 153969 or Andy 07940 202312 or by visiting our website www.themountracingclub.co.uk
