TOWN MAGAZINE 12,000 Copies Per Month Is it really September? The kids are back to school, and there’s still hope for an Indian Summer! While you may have some time back for yourself (and the fine weather is helping) then its time to get those jobs done around the house. We have plenty of quality local trades people featured inside this month’s edition: there are handymen, cleaners, gardeners, decorators, and many more to help bring your property back to life. We also have pages of local community events in our What’s On section. Too many to mention here – but there’s something for everyone, I’m sure. If you have an open or community event coming up, you can advertise it for free in our next edition.

New facility makes a big splash in Fleetwood

A

n exciting new water play area and café kept children entertained this summer on the site of Fleetwood Leisure Centre.

Marine Splash provides youngsters with the opportunity to splash through fountains, water jets and water tunnels with a paddling area also included. A new café also overlooks the splash pad offering an outside decked area whilst watching the little ones as they play. You’ll also find picnic areas and toilet facilities within the new development too. An inclusive children’s play area with equipment suitable for disabled children has recently been completed on the former site of the old paddling pool.

These exciting developments are part of the Five for Fleetwood scheme. Find more information at: http:// wyre.gov.uk/fiveforfleetwood

Five Wyre parks among the best in Britain Green Flags are flying proudly at five of Wyre’s parks, as Keep Britain Tidy unveils this year’s recipients of their prestigious awards.

K

epple Lane in Garstang, Poulton’s Vicarage Park, Hawthorne Park in Thornton and the Wyre Estuary Country Park in Stanah are all on the list along with Fleetwood’s Memorial Park, which has received the award for the first time. Green Flag Awards recognise and reward the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities. Councillor David Henderson, Cabinet member with responsibility for parks at Wyre Council, said. “I’m absolutely delighted to receive five Green Flag Awards and official recognition that our parks are among the best in the country.

“We take great care of our green spaces in Wyre because we know how important they are to communities. It’s particularly great news that Memorial Park has earned a flag at the first time of applying, following comprehensive restoration work funded by the Heritage and Big Lottery Funds. “I’d like to thank our parks and open spaces staff and all the volunteers, fundraisers and Friends groups for their invaluable help looking after them.”

£10,000 regeneration boost for Fleetwood

Team Fleetwood will comprise representatives of Wyre Council, Fleetwood Town Council, Fleetwood Civic Society, Fylde Coast YMCA, Fleetwood Town Football Club, Fleetwood Chamber of Trade, Blackpool and the Fylde College, Lancashire County Council, NW Training Group, Freeport Shopping Village, ASDA, Regenda Housing Association, The Princes Trust, LeftCoast, National Citizen Service and schools.

T

There will also be involvement from community groups including Fleetwood In Bloom, Fleetwood Rotary Club, Friends of Memorial Park, Mount Heritage Group and many other companies, retail traders and town activists.

Fleetwood is to receive £10,000 to help develop an economic plan for the area and kick start economic growth.

he Department for Communities and Local Government has announced the award following a successful bid by Wyre Council.

A new Fleetwood Coastal Community Team is being established bringing together local business, councils and people to coordinate regeneration and manage the project. ‘Team Fleetwood’ wants a make over for the town centre and will use the community’s self-help culture to make it happen. This team of activists will also prepare an action plan which will set the direction for the town’s future development. Councillor Peter Murphy, Cabinet member with responsibility for economic development at Wyre Council, said: “This funding will kick start plans to rejuvenate the town centre and complement all the other developments underway on the seafront and throughout Fleetwood. “Although Fleetwood is below the regional average for empty shops, we want to see them filled and its image improved. It’s a real team approach bringing together partners from local business, community and charity groups, and we want to inspire shopkeepers to join with us in making over the town.” Chairman of Fleetwood Town Council, Councillor Terry Rogers, said: “I’m over the moon about this funding and looking forward to working with Wyre Council and our partners to improve how the town centre looks. I also hope to attract further investment as the project develops.”

26

Coastal Communities Minister Mark Francois said: “Coastal Community Teams will help decide where investment goes because local people know best what is needed to grow their local economy.” Along with being awarded £10,000 to kick start work, the team will also be able to bid for up to a £50,000 share of a new £3 million Coastal Revival Fund to support or restore local heritage and facilities which benefit the wider community and the surrounding economy.

We are a small independent group and meet on a weekly basis at our hall at the top of Bold Street, right next to the North Euston Hotel. Our meetings are run on a “drop in” basis every Wednesday between 10.a.m. and 3.00 p.m. Tea, coffee and biscuits are served in a very informal, comfortable atmosphere. We also have a session with exercises especially chosen for Parkinson sufferers but helpers and volunteers can join in too. These exercises will not halt the progression of the disease but they do promote a feeling of well being and are mentally stimulating ( as well as being a good laugh in the process!!) The exercise session is at 12.noon. So if you are affected by Parkinson’s Disease in any way whatsoever, why not give us try, you never know, we might be just that extra tonic you need. Also if you feel like volunteering to help out in any way, pop in on any Wednesday and see what you think. We do hold other regular events, initially they were for fund raising but they are becoming more for the social side now. Sue on 0755 4623 231 e mail: parkinsonsprestonandfleetwood@gmail.com

FY7 Community Beat Hello So, Tram Sunday has been and gone and it was as predicted, good weather, really busy and with no incidents to report on. Fortunately long gone are the days of drunken fights from late afternoon until early morning and the event continues to be truly family friendly. This is testament as to how the organisers, the police, the licensee’s and all other partners have worked together to make this happen over several years. Counting down to 2016’s now…. but in the meantime (and while the weather is still burning down on us) my planning looks towards Halloween and Bonfire Night events and what traditionally gets referred to as ‘Mischief Week!’ For those out there that are having work carried out on your properties, please make sure you are using reputable companies and that you take time to research them; understanding that you’re paying a fair and reasonable price for the agreed works. We all know of horror stories where the elderly or vulnerable have been charged stupid sums of money for minimal work. If you have elderly neighbours or relatives, please keep an eye on them and report your concerns to either us on 101 or Lancashire Trading Standards. Trading Standards will advise not to agree to any works done as a result of cold calling. Again, a reminder to know where your kids are, what they’re doing and who with. A number of recent incidents causing anti-social behaviour that have resulted in minor crimes being committed. More importantly, a youth was trapped in waist deep mud on the banks of Jubilee Quay resulting in a response across all emergency services that fortunately freed him within 15 minutes of the area being flooded by

the incoming tide! We understand that kids will be kids but want to go as far as we reasonably can, (and expect parents to do the same!), to make sure they stay safe and out of trouble with the law! The Fleetwood PACT event takes place at the ASDA store on Dock Street on the third Saturday of each month between 1pm and 3pm. Thornton Cleveleys event takes place on the last Saturday of every month, at Thornton Precinct Co-op between 5pm and 6pm. We’re usually joined by a local Councillor too so between us we should be able to assist or refer your information to the right person. For those on t’internet, take a look at our Lancashire Police website – ‘Do It Online’ allows you to report incidents and crimes online direct through to us. You can complain and compliment and most importantly, it eases the process and frustrations sometimes encountered by making it easy to email directly to an officer. From this website you could choose to join the thousands of other people already signed up to our new ‘In The know’ text messaging service. This allows you to tailor what information we send through to you, whether it is crime prevention, news alerts, and crime pattern information or witness appeals. You’ll also find we will use it to advertise job vacancies. All this is in addition to the Fleetwood Area Police and Thornton Cleveleys Area Police facebook pages.

THE MOUNT RACING CLUB UPDATE

FIDELMA MOON IN FINE FORM

T

he Mount Racing Clubs promising 3yo filly Fidelma Moon travelled to Carlisle on Thursday 9th July and scored an emphatic victory in the 0-75 rated Handicap over 1mile. With Jordan Vaughan deputising in the saddle for the suspended Joey Haynes, Fidelma was smartly away from the gates and after a furlong was soon at the head of affairs. From this point on she never saw another rival as she basically galloped them all into submission under a well judged ride from Jordan and she was cheered all the way to the line by her large band of loyal Owners who had made the trip to the Cumbrian track. Fidelma returned to Carlisle 2 weeks later and ran another solid race in a higher grade and despite the rain soaked ground going against her she battled on well to finish 4th beaten 4L. Her next outing came on August the 6th when her Owners were treated to a day out at our local track Haydock Park. Again upped in grade and racing over a mile she battled on gamely and ran another creditable and honest race to finish 3rd beaten only 3L by a couple of smart horses. These 3 runs have all been very encouraging and have seen Fidelma make a welcome and deserved return to the Winners Enclosure. The drop back in trip to a mile and the more positive riding of her certainly have made a difference and are something we will stick to for the foreseeable future. She remains in good heart and with the prospect of her improving with age, her Owners can now look forward to plenty more good days ahead with her.

S

ummer Storm remains in good order and on course to debut for for us at the beginning of September. He has been stepped up in work now and we saw him being put through his paces at Mick Easterbys where he did two 7f pieces of work in good style. The gallops at Micks are ideal for Jumps horses as they are on a stiff incline and are quite deep underfoot, with the emphasis definitely being on stamina for the horses that work them. This should suit Summer Storm who’s pedigree is stamina laden and looks the type of horse who will relish 3 miles on the track.

There are plenty of share packages available in our horses and if anyone would like to know more or maybe visit them in their stables either at ‘Karl Burkes Spigot Lodge’ or ‘Rebecca Menzies’ you can do so by contacting Geoff 07852 153969 or Andy 07940 202312 or by visiting our website www.themountracingclub.co.uk Advertise your business call 0800 970 7687 or email info@link-mag.co.uk

Money Matters

Mortgage advice By Martin Lewis

T

his is a crucial warning for anyone with a mortgage. Mortgage rates are at historic lows, but the window to take advantage looks to be slamming shut. The Bank of England Governor has said he believes UK interest rates will rise from their six-year slumber at 0.5% before the end of this year. If that happens, today’s rates will look cheap as chips. So everyone with an outstanding home loan should be checking now to see if they can do better – and possibly lock in at a dirt-cheap rate ahead of possible rises. The potential savings here are huge here’s a tweet I got from Christopher on the back of warning about this. “Sorted - my monthly repayments fell from £785 to £533.” So let me run you through the 8 things you need to know.

1. Check your current deal.

A mortgage is the biggest expenditure most people have, so I’m always slightly surprised that when asked, not everyone knows their rate and details. Check now that you know… a. The current rate: And monthly repayment and amount outstanding. b. Type: Is it a fix, tracker, discount or SVR (standard variable rate, ie, bog standard bank rate)? c. Deal deadline: If it’s a short-term deal, such as a two-year fix, when does it end? d. Term: How long is it, for example, 25 years, and when it must be fully repaid by. e. Penalties: Are there any penalties if you repay or leave early? f. Your loan-to-value (LTV): The proportion of your home’s current value you are borrowing. As an example, £80,000 on a 40

£100,000 property means an 80% LTV. The lower the LTV, the better deal you can get, so if your home’s increased in value you may gain, even without other changes (both Nationwide.co.uk and Halifax.co.uk have tools showing the rough change in prices in your area). If this is all gooblydegook, my free printed www.mse.me/remortgageguide booklet can take you through it in detail.

2. Benchmark your cheapest deal at speed.

Recently we’ve seen two-year fixed deals (for those with low LTVs) plummet to almost one per cent - that’s unthinkably cheap and longer fixes and variable deals are at or near historic lows too. Yet a host of factors affect what your cheapest deal is, the easy route’s using a comparison site. Just plug in your home’s value, the amount you want to borrow and other details and it should list what’s likely to be available to you. Some sites only list deals available to brokers, missing out some lenders, including HSBC, Tesco Bank and First Direct. So it’s worth checking a comparison site that includes direct-only deals. These include my own mse. me/mortgagebestbuys, and totallymoney. com’s mortgage tool.

3. Fees can be £1,000s - factor them in. The smaller your mortgage, the bigger the impact fees have, especially for mortgages under £100,000. This can skew which is cheapest for you. So you should always incorporate the fees – do this by spreading them over the fixed or

Business & Finance tracker period (as after you may shift again to another deal). Eg, £1,000 of fees over two years is £1,000 / 24 = £42 a month. To help, the comparison at www.mse.me/ mortgagebestbuys does this for you, so you can see the real cost of different mortgages side by side.

4. How much can you save?

Now you know your rate and what’s out there, work out the potential savings. I’ve eight tools to home in on the right answer for you at mse. me/mortgagecalc, including help comparing two mortgages and estimating if you should ditch your fix.

5. Can you afford a cheaper mortgage?

15 months ago mortgage affordability checks were introduced to stop people borrowing beyond their means – I believe that’s definitely the right move for those getting new borrowing or extending existing debts. Yet, perversely, most lenders (and from March all lenders) are forced to apply these rules to those trying to switch deal too, leading to some being told “you can’t afford to get a cheaper rate”. This is something I’m lobbying to try and get changed. Yet you need to be aware. Lenders will check you can afford your mortgage if rates hit 6-7%. They also want evidence of income, big bills and expenses, even eating out, so be frugal in the months before applying to make your situation look as good as it can.

6. Should I get a fix or tracker/discount?

With a fixed mortgage, the amount you repay is, er, fixed, so it’s like buying an insurance policy against possible rate rises. Variable deals move with UK interest rates – sometimes at the provider’s whim. Currently you only pay a touch more to fix. Predicting future interest rate moves is difficult – though pundits think the general direction’s up, the question’s just how quickly. So instead focus on your finances. The more

crucial the security of knowing exactly what you’ll pay, the more you should edge towards fixing - and fixing longer. If a rock-bottom deal’s your driver, edge to short-term trackers if cheaper.

7. Mortgage brokers can help boost acceptance.

You can, and often should, use a broker to help you find the right deal. They have info unavailable to consumers, eg, lenders’ credit and affordability criteria. A good broker can ease acceptance by matching you to the right deal - and the mortgage interview’s quicker too. But ask the broker how much using them will cost and if they check all deals available to them, not just a panel of lenders. Some phone only brokers like lcplc.co.uk are fee-free, just getting commission from lenders - others charge fees like Which.co.uk (£499), but can cover a wider range of products. If you want face-to-face help, then ask friends for local recommendations or use unbiased.co.uk or vouchedfor.co.uk.

8. Is your credit score good enough?

These days it isn’t just about getting the best mortgage, but the best that’ll accept you. Credit scoring plays a huge part of that, and managing your credit worthiness months in advance is part of the task. I’ve 36 tips in my www.mse.me/creditrating guide, but some key ones include a) Ensure your’re on the electoral role, via gov. uk/register-to-vote b) Never withdraw cash on credit cards. c) Never miss a repayment on anything – even late payments hurt d) Check your credit files at Equifax.co.uk, Experian.co.uk and Callcredit for errors – you have a statutory right to do this for £2 e) Avoid payday loans like the plague (both for your credit score and your financial health). f) Avoid other applications, such as credit cards and contract mobiles, just before applying.

Despite the cancellation of the main Fylde Folk and Roots Festival in Fleetwood, Fleetwood Museum has decided to go ahead with its planned programme of music for Fri 4th and Sat. 5th September. On Friday 4th at 12.45 Red Duster will play a programme of maritime themed songs and at 14.15 former Spinners frontman Hughie Jones will appear in the Harriet Boathall. During many years of TV series with the Spinners, Liverpool based Hughie, developed a huge repertoire of maritime songs. He is playing the Museum before flying to America the next day. On Saturday 5th Sept. Dave Pearce and Dick Gillingham will present their Fish and Ships show at 11.00, with female duo Scolds Bridle following them at 12.30. The duo are celebrating 40 years together and play this date before a tour of Southern England. The Saturday programme finishes with the ever popular Alan Bell and his band at 14.15. The former director of the Fylde Folk Festival is still a hugely popular performer and writer. Admission to all the weekend’s events will be by £2 payment on the door at each session.

The Museum will have free door admission for the 4 Heritage Open Days from September 10th to 13th. We will also be heading a heritage walk’ Fleetwood’s Seaside Heyday ‘on Tues 8th September, leaving the Museum at 13.30. The Museum in conjunction with Wyre Council will lead a Memorial Park Heritage Walk leaving the main gates at 14.0 on Fri. Sept.11th. The monthly speaker for September will be Derek Gifford with a show entitled’ Songs of the Sea’ at 14.00 on Weds. Sept. 16th. Derek is a well known performer at festivals throughout the country. After the monthly Coffee Morning on Weds 30th September at 10.30, we continue that day, Decimus Burton’s birthday, with a talk and short walk about Fleetwood’s founding architect’s work starting at 13.00. As for our monthly talks, admission is free but donations are welcomed. Dick Gillingham ( Museum Trustee)
