Cyclists raise funds for Trinity

A

group of cyclists have helped to raise £10,000 for Trinity Hospice by taking part in a sponsored bike ride from Manchester to Blackpool. On Sun 8th July nearly 40 riders supporting the Bispham based hospice completed the 60 mile cycle on Sunday in extremely hot and humid conditions, with the first Trinity rider back after just three hours and 50 minutes. Among the cyclists was Trinity’s HR Manager David Warburton who is training for the charity’s London to Paris Bike Ride which sets off in September. David said ‘It was a tough ride in such heat, but the atmosphere was amazing and really kept you going. It was wonderful to see so many people taking part just for Trinity, knowing how much of a

difference they were making for our patients and their loved ones. There is still a long way to go in my training before the cycle from London to Paris later in the year, but if Sunday is anything to go by it’s going to be a very challenging but fulfilling experience.’ Cyclists taking part at the weekend raised sponsorship which will go towards providing Trinity care at the hospice, the hospital and in the community. Trinity’s Events Assistant Antonia Hawkins said ‘We know this year was a tough ride for our cyclists in such warm conditions. They all did so well to complete the route, and to raise so much in sponsorship. Every penny raised will go directly to proving outstanding palliative care to all who need it on the Fylde coast. www.trinityhospice.co.uk

Businesses beach friendly list

T

here are over 25 dedicated beach clean groups spread across the North West coast volunteering their time to help reduce litter on the beach and in the sea. Although volunteering their time to help on a beach clean may be a stretch for many people, much can be done within the community to prevent pollution reaching the natural environment in the first place. That’s why LOVEmyBEACH have developed a beach friendly checklist for business owners, offering advice on how improvements can be made to prevent pollution. Simple steps such as disposing of kitchen fats in the bin rather than down the sink, putting stickers on your toilets asking people to put disposable products in the bin 14

and not the toilet, or becoming a ReFILL station to cut back on the requirement for single-use water bottles, can all help make a difference. Kate Shane, Head of Merlin Entertainments’ Blackpool Cluster has recently signed up to be a LOVEmyBEACH business and as a result is promoting the ‘3Ps’ initiative in all of their venues toilet facilities in order to avoid environmentally-damaging items ending up in marine waters or washed up on the beach.

The checklist is a simple A4 sheet which a business owner or manager could complete in less than half an hour. It also includes an employee pledge sheet; encouraging businesses to speak to their teams about the actions which individuals can take at work and at home to Kate said ‘This is an incredibly protect our coastline. important campaign. When people flush the wrong things The business checklist can be found down the toilet it significantly on the LOVEmyBEACH website. Caring for your pet

V

eterinary charity PDSA is urging owners to keep their pets safe in the sun, to protect them from dangerous conditions such as heatstroke and cancer. PDSA vet, Olivia Anderson-Nathan, said ‘Although we might be aware of the risks of the sun to ourselves, many owners are unaware that our pets face the same dangers of sunburn, heatstroke and even skin cancer. Heatstroke, for example, can have devastating consequences. Bear in mind on a hot day that dogs can’t control their body temperature the way we can. They are wearing a fur coat, and as they only have sweat glands in their paws they mainly cool down through panting, which isn’t very effective.’ Olivia continued ‘One of the most dangerous causes of heatstroke or hyperthermia is leaving pets inside a vehicle during warm or hot weather. But leaving them in the garden for too long without shade, or taking them for a walk during the hottest part of the day, can also be very dangerous. Any dog can get heatstroke, but this is especially important for owners of flat-faced, overweight or chronically ill dogs to consider, as they will be at even greater risk.’ The temperature inside cars during warm weather can rapidly soar, leaving pets inside at risk of suffering fatal heatstroke. The charity warns that common measures like parking in the shade or keeping the windows open are not effective, as temperatures inside the car can still sky-rocket in these circumstances. Exposure to heat and direct sunlight can cause serious cases of heatstroke and excessive sun exposure can even cause skin cancer in some unlucky pets with light-coloured fur, which affords even less protection from the UV rays. PDSA vets are urging owners to take extra care to keep their beloved four-legged friends safe.

Sun Awareness

PDSA’s advice on keeping pets safe in the sun PDSA tips for pet safety in the sun • Limit your pet’s exposure

to direct sunlight, especially during the hottest part of the day.

minutes, which can cause fatal heatstroke. ‘Not long’ is too long.

• Avoid exercising pets during the hottest hours of the day. Instead, go out early in the morning or in the evening. Keep strenuous exercise to a minimum and give them constant access to cool, indoor areas.

• Use a pet-safe sun cream

recommended by your vet, especially on pets with white or thin fur, focusing on the nose and ears.

• If you see unexplained sores

or ulcers on your pets’ skin, see a vet urgently. Early diagnosis and treatment may save your pet’s life.

• Never leave pets in cars,

conservatories or caravans, even for a short time. Even on a cloudy day with the windows open, the temperature can soar dangerously high in just a few

• Make sure your pets always have access to fresh water.

We Carer Lot

A

new course aimed at giving unpaid carers all the support and information they need to look after a loved one at home has been launched at an afternoon tea event. The CARE (Carers and Relative Experience) Group has been created by Trinity Hospice in partnership with Blackpool Carers Centre to offer handson experience and advice about how to care for someone who is ill, while remaining in their own home. It was launched during a special event at Beaverbrooks House in June. The programme is the brainchild of Trinity nurse Claire Frith, who wrote a research paper on how services could be improved for unpaid carers.

this type of information being available to everyone who might find themselves in a caring position. Something that would give them the knowledge they need and to empower them to take more control.’

Claire, who was one of the first nurses for Trinity’s ‘Hospice at Home’ service, said she felt there had been a gap for unpaid carers and a lack of information in the more practical aspects of caring for someone at home. Claire came to know some of those struggles as her own family went through them as they looked after her granddad at home.

The CARE Group will be a rolling programme for Blackpool residents, consisting of six sessions over a three month period. Each session will talk about different topics as well as give practical demonstrations.

She said ‘As a qualified nurse, I was pretty much the first port of call for my family. They were turning to me for advice and help. At one point my Nanna had spent an hour trying to change granddad’s bedsheets, frightened she was going to hurt him. When I got there and did it in 10 minutes it made me realise that the little things we do in day to day nursing may be more difficult for less experienced carers. That’s when it came to me about

Amanda Madden, an Adult Carers Support Worker at Blackpool Carers Centre said ‘We’re delighted to partner with Trinity on this exciting venture and proud that our service will be at the hub of this programme. From the point of referral, we can support carers into and through our Adult Carer service, cancer and dementia specific services and also now throughout the course, providing additional aftercare support as required.’

Claire added ‘I don’t think people are often aware of how difficult it can be to look after someone at home, and this course will talk about those difficulties. It will help to prepare them and educate them while providing practical skills.’

Carers can self-refer through Blackpool Carers Centre or speak to a health care professional, with the first sessions taking place in September. www.blackpoolcarers.org

Something in the air

B

lackpool’s two-day Air Show is back this summer with a fantastic programme of aerial entertainment.

The spectacular free event will take place on Blackpool Promenade on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th August and will include a breathtaking finale by the world-famous Red Arrows. The event, which is being sponsored by Northern, will showcase the very best in British aviation with a whole host of amazing flying machines and some of the country’s most talented pilots. The programme will begin shortly after 1.30pm on both days, with the best viewing points on the promenade between North and Central Piers. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, which features a Spitfire, a Hurricane and a Lancaster Bomber, will take part in a hugely patriotic display. Crowds will also be able to see an RAF Typhoon thunder across the horizon; see spectacular aerobatic displays from the Turbulent Team, Wing Walkers and The Blades; and view some of the world’s best aircraft flying over the iconic Blackpool seafront including a Strikemaster, Chipmunk and Swordfish. The RAF Red Arrows team will bring the show to an unforgettable finale on the second day with another awesome display of speed, agility and precision. Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said ‘The Blackpool Air Show is always one of the highlights of Blackpool’s summer. The line-up of planes and stunt teams looks brilliant and it promises to deliver a fantastic two days of free entertainment for all the family. I would encourage people to stay over for the whole weekend and take the opportunity to enjoy everything that Blackpool has to offer.’

Craig Harrop, Interim Regional Director at Northern said ‘We’re delighted to be the main sponsors of the upcoming Blackpool Air Show. Northern play an integral part in the tourism sector, with Blackpool being one of our busiest destinations. We look forward to supporting the event in our role as the main transport provider, and also as headline sponsor and are excited to welcome people from all over the UK into Blackpool on our services.’ Visitors are encouraged to arrive into the resort early to avoid any traffic congestion. To complement the aerial programme, there will be plenty to see and do on the ground before the show starts with a whole range of stalls, stands and concessions in front of The Blackpool Tower including the Red Arrows ground team. In addition, there will be a fantastic selection of food and drink concessions. The official Blackpool Air Show programme will be available to purchase on the day from the VisitBlackpool stand in the main Air Show village or from the VisitBlackpool Tourist Information Centre located at Festival House opposite Blackpool Tower. For full programme timings and regular updates, go to www. visitblackpool.com/ airshow. There will be further details nearer the event on special park-and-ride facilities, so keep checking updates. Please note that the programme is potentially subject to change due to both aircraft availability and weather conditions.

ooking to create some unforgettable memories for the summer of 2018? Then why not head to Blackpool and you can see for yourself why this is the UK’s favourite beach resort with the ‘Bucket and Spade’ guide list. Not only have we got sand and sea, more shows, attractions and entertainment than you can shake a stick at, we have also got a collection of unique experiences that will simply blow your mind! 1. Dare To Ride It is fast. Very fast. The question is: Are you brave enough to ride ICON, the UK’s first double launch rollercoaster? The new £16m ride at Blackpool Pleasure Beach will take you on an exhilarating journey where you will experience the same acceleration as a Formula 1 driver before twisting and turning at high speed across the park. Prepare to be wowed! 2. Marvel At The Super-Heroes It’s time to come face-to-face with the Marvel super-heroes at Blackpool’s Madame Tussauds. Enter an ice cave and get up close and personal with the God of Thunder himself, before attempting to lift Thor’s legendary hammer. Surrounded by debris and destruction, confront the Hulk in a New York street and see if you are strong enough to lift a taxi! Or if all that’s too much, settle for a selfie with the likes of Groot, Rocket Raccoon, Nick Fury or Spiderman. 3. Bop Along To Britney Spears The world’s biggest pop star has performed on every major stage in the world. But she’s never performed on the iconic seafront in the shadow of The Blackpool Tower – until now! Britney will be bringing her huge Vegas-style production to the Tower Festival Headland on the night of Saturday 1 September. You do not want to miss this. 4. Try The Ultimate Escape Head into the eerie world of The Blackpool Dungeon and see if you can escape the noose before time runs out. This spine-tingling Escape Room adventure with a twist will determine whether you lose your head under pressure and find yourself locked in the murky depths of a castle to meet your fate. Be afraid – the clock is already ticking. 5. Tickle A Tapir Accompanied by a keeper at the brilliant Blackpool Zoo, you will head inside the tapir enclosure to meet these most gentle of creatures. As you handfeed them some of their favourite foods, you can get a close-up view of their strange looking snouts. And then it’s time get down to business – it’s tickle time! This is just one of many unforgettable animal experiences at the Blackpool Zoo. 6. Brave The Cave Twist and climb your way through a network of tunnels at the North West’s first indoor caving system. The attraction at Ascent Trampoline Park in Blackpool is a fully immersive experience with a series of special effects and hidden tunnels.

Ascent will provide the torch and hard hat, you just need to bring along the bravado. 7. Take A Leap Of Faith Dare you take a walk of faith at the top of Blackpool Tower? Step out of the lift 380 feet up and the thrilling SkyWalk awaits you. It’s a five centimetre-thick glass platform where you can look out over the Irish Sea and look down on the famous Golden Mile below you. It’s a viewing experience you will never forget! 8. Snorkel With Sharks It’s a big step up from swimming with the fishes. This is a unique, exhilarating experience where you will come face to face with more than 20 sharks and other spectacular marine life in Blackpool’s SEA LIFE Centre. It’s your very own 15-minute Jaws adventure which will be followed by a behind-the-scenes tour to learn about shark breeding, conservation and food preparation (don’t panic you are not the food!). 9. Take The Plunge Picture the scene: You are on the roof of the Sandcastle Waterpark building on South Promenade. Just one thing stands between you and the tropical waters below. Well two things actually: The colossal Montazooma mat slide with 360 degree loops and back-to-back turns, or the Aztec Falls, an electrifying pitch-black descent into a giant bowl. The choice is yours….. 10. Ride The Lights Get ready for an electrifying and magical cycle ride under Blackpool’s world-famous Illuminations. Head for the seafront on Tuesday 28 August and you can join thousands of riders as they travel along the Promenade for a sneak preview of the 2018 Lights in a totally traffic-free environment. This is bike riding – but not as you know it! 11. Walk The Big One You might be brave enough to ride The Big One at Blackpool Pleasure Beach – but dare you walk to the summit of its famous slope? Join an escorted climb to the top of the 235ft hill for an experience you will never ever forget! Selected dates until October. 12. Tango In The Tower Ballroom Your chance to follow in the footsteps of the multitude of celebrities who have taken to the ballroom floor in Strictly. Nothing will quite prepare you for the magnificence of the Blackpool Tower Ballroom or the joy of dancing in one of the most famous dance venues on the planet. Keep checking www.visitblackpool.com for updates and to find out what else is happening.

ehearsals are under way for ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ on at the Lowther Pavilion October 16th - 20th. Marton Operatic are proud to be helping to support the RNLI. A swashbuckling comedy for children and adults alike. Come along – dressed as a pirate if you wish – and join them on the rocky Cornwall seashore to meet the famous Pirates of Penzance. The Story follows Frederic, who has served his apprenticeship with the Pirates and his duty is done – for he is the Slave of Duty. Now free from the Pirates (it seems) he will live a blameless life and atone for his Piracy by turning the Pirates over to the police. Thanks to Gilbert’s crazy plot, it all turns out quite differently with the help of a modern Major-General, his incredibly large bevy of daughters and a police force who are even more hopeless at their task than the Pirates. Needless to say, the story ends happily. Memorable songs for rollicking Pirates and plodding Police, soaring love ballads

and catchy choruses all play us through this classic Gilbert & Sullivan mixture of absurdity and beauty. It’s delightful entertainment for all ages. The show runs from Tue 16th to Sat 20th October at Lowther Pavillion, Lytham St Annes. Admission £14, children and students £5. Box office 01253 794221 or visit www.lowtherpavillion.co.uk Visit www.martonoperatic.co.uk for more information on the company
